how do i empty it?
First, you may want to save files or groups of files to an external drive, for archiving. Using Finder windows, you will simply drag and drop files and folders to the external drive you wish to use. What you will be left with is files you want to keep, and those you want to delete.
The Next thing you want to do is evaluate the drive. The evaluation will indicate two things of importance. What files are taking up space, and how much is each one taking up. From this, you will simply prioritize and implement removal.
There is Onyx, Daisy Disk, and Grand Perspective to evaluate disk usage and find files suitable for deletion.
I personally like Grand Perspective. From the interface, you can san your hard drive, then click on files, represented by boxes of varying size (indicating relative file size and name), and then hit a button titled "delete", to move them to the trash.
Lastly, you empty your trash.

<Edited by Host>If yours is the mid 2011 model, then no, it does not come with a USB system disk. The computer has a Recovery Partition, and Internet Recovery mode to provide all you need to restore the system. All you really need is a reliable internet connection.
Yes, I know, for some people it is a tad disconcerting, as they may not have a fast internet connection in the event that a restore is required. The best workaround is to create a clone of the system onto an external disk (using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper apps). Potentially, if you do it early, you can fit everything onto a 16 GB flash drive. -

It would appear Apple does not intend for you to do it.
It might be possible, if expensive.

My disk will not install adobe onto my air as they say apple do not support microdot?
It may be worth saying, though you have probably figured it out now, that Mac don't run Windows apps and Windows doesn't run Mac apps. So if you go between them there is every chance that you will have to buy all of your apps again - if they are available on the new computer. This is a big deal and the cost of this should be budgeted in.

Lion will not install on a disk with 3rd-party encryption. -
Start Up Disk is Full and Computer is Slow
I downloaded a bunch of photos but took them off right away but I keep getting the message my Disk is Full. Now my Air is acting slow.
iPhoto maintains its own trash bin. Try emptying the trash in iPhoto and restarting.

Imovie won't let me save my movie as a file, and it says ''startup disk'' is full!
I made a movie on Imovie and it won't let me download or convert, I don't know what else I can do, and also it says my disk is full, and my macbook is 64 and its impossible, i dont have that much. please help me. HELP!.I have the same problem and then some. I movie won't share this particular project, but it also won't save any changes made to it or any other project. At least that's what it started doing, now when I go to even try to make any changes it wigs out and things get scrambled in the Project window and it plays video from another project.
When I create a new project, the Share menu is available, but it won't save changes to that project either. And by that I mean I can put stuff in the project and do whatever, but as soon as I quit and relaunch the application, the project is empty. I did figure out that if I make changes in a new project and immediately share it to the media browser that it will save the changes, but then it messes up my other project even more somehow!
Tried archive and install, deleting plists, reinstalling iMovie and iLife support stuff (twice), repairing permissions, and changing permissions in the project package. Any other ideas? -

How to fix airplay to my apple tv. Home airplay is "on" on the apple tv and the computer. Movie plays on the macbook air but when airplay is activated a checkboard screen covers the computer and tv. They are on the same wi-fi. Blue tooth on the computer is off.
You have mirroring enabled. If you are trying to play iTunes content just use home sharing or airplay.

Hi All , after a long night and day strugle I managed to recover my MacBook Air. I decided to post this for anyone who encounter this problem in the future , hope this helps.
Situation: After trying to solve an Airport Problem , I decided to boot in safe mode. The laptop got stuck in grey screen ; after a while I force a shutdown pressing the power button ; when I powerup again ; it never came back. The grey apple screen appeared and after 10 seconds the computer turned off.
I booted in Single user mode ( cmd+S). Running the fsck command , showed a corrupted disk ( Invalid Key lenght ). An ls command showed my document files were there.
The Problem: How do I reinstall OS without loosing my data ( Remember , this is a macbook air ) . Running Disk utility from OSx Install Disk forced to erase the disk before continue. Well, I figured out a solution
Solution:
You will need another Macbook
Using an external USB drive ( in my case a 640 Gb Samsung Hard drive).
Using Disk Utility I made 3 partitions on Samsung disk ( All partitions , GUID , and Mac OSx Plus , journaled)
Partition 1 : 250 Gb named OS_HOST
Partition 2 : the size is not relevant here ; named OS_ INST. Then you copy an Image of OS Install Disk 1 using the restore option to this partition. Insert OS Install disk 1 , drag into source , then drag into destination field the OS_INST partition already created.
Partition 3 : the same with Partition 2 but with the OS Install Disk 2
Once ready , plug the hard disk in USB port of MACBook Air and power on. When you hear the chime ; pres option-alt key and keep it pressed until you see the option of booting with the USB partition ( Orange icon ). The installation utility will start up ; choose to install in OS_HOST external Disk Partition.
After installation is finished ; the macbook wiill reboot with full operating system in external disk, and the installation procces will help you to migrate all the files in internal hard drive. Otherwise , the internal hard drive will be accesible from FInder , from wich you can copy your files to OS_HOST in external disk
From there and with your files save and sound ; you can clean reinstall your OS in you Macbook Air internal disk.Great post/tips Luis!

MacBook Air w/o DVD drive = No Digital Copy Downloads?!
I have a Mar/12 11" Macbook Air.
I recently decided that I would transfer all of my movies to digital and download the digital copies to my hard drive. Even though I have the proper (and unused) code, the instructions say I have to insert a disk first.
This is kind of a problem since MacBook Airs do not have a DVD/CD drive.
How am I supposed to download/unlock my purchsed movies from iTunes without a DVD drive? Suggestions? Or am I screwed? I really don't want to fork over $80 or so to get a DVD drive.

PS I would like to add that I have zero problems downloading movies straight from iTunes. I am only having problems with transfering the authorized digital copies that are included with the DVD/Blu-Ray purchase.It depends on the method the movie distributor uses for the digital copy. If they provide just a code, you redeem that code in the iTunes Store and the movie will download. If the copy is on a disk in the package and you use the code just to validate, then you will need a DVD drive. If you have another computer with a DVD drive, Remote Disk may work, though I haven't tried it. Or you can redeem the copy on another computer and copy it to your MacBook Air. Otherwise you will need to purchase a DVD drive, either from Apple or another manufacturer.

When I put a musical CD into the reader (no matter if it is the internal Matshita or an external drive) the system write a message like :" this computer cannot read the disk" (in italian "il disco inserito non è leggibile da questo computer").
I have also a macbook air : no problem at all with the same CD and the same external reader.
Please help me.....Followup: on a business trip. Booked ahead for Genius Bar appointment. Fixed in half an hour. His hardware test found nothing wrong with the MacBook. He flashed Mountain Lion onto the laptop with no hiccups. Right there in the store the MB connected to iCloud and I had all my personal information back. Back in the hotel room it only took me 3 hours to fully reinstall all my purchased software over the hotel's wired LAN from the App Store and third party sites, without needing a single DVD like in the bad old days. Even re-installing MS Office was painless. I just searched with Google, then the MS page I clicked on served up a form with my information on it automatically and sent me an email with the product key when I clicked download. Obviously their server recognized this device. I cloned the MB to a small PassPort backup portable external hard drive and then used the MacBook normally in meetings next day. Very impressive service. We've come a long way from portable computing two decades ago.
Still a mystery why the installation would not complete at home, but problem resolved. -
Transferring files off dead Macbook Air
So I'm currently working on this persons' Macbook Air, and as far as I can see, the HDD s totally dead (DiskWarrior can't even do anything), but aside from the fact that it's practivally dead, I can't seem to find a way to get the files off of the HDD, though I can clearly see that they are still intact in Single User Mode.
Does anybody have any advice for getting the files off of this computer? It's a ~2009 Macbook Air with a ZIF HDD, so a SATA dock is out of the question >.>
