My computer doesn't recognize a disk to upgrade to snow leopard

Hi
I have macbook version 10.5.8 (model identifiner: MacBookPro5,3, i bought it in 2009) and bought a install DVD to upgrade to Mac OS X Snow Leopard (version 10.6.3). Before I bought the disk from apple store, I chatted with the costomer servise and they said it's the right disk to buy. But my computer doesn't read the disk and keep rejecting. Does anyone know why this happens or How I can solve this problem?

If it's the white Snow Leopard disc, then it's the correct one and any MacBook Pro can be upgraded to Snow Leopard.
Will your drive read other discs? It may be that your drive lens just needs a good cleaning - you can try one of the commerical CD/DVD lens cleaning kits sold at most electronics store and give that a try. If that doesn't work then I would take the disc back to the Apple Store along with your computer and let them have a go. If there's a mechanical problem with your SuperDrive they'll be able to diagnose that as well.
Good luck,
Clinton

  • ITunes 10 doesn't recognize my iPhone after upgrading to Snow Leopard

    Hi guys,
I recently upgraded my Macbook to Snow Leopard. I still have all of my software, my files, etc. on my laptop, but when I plug in my iPhone 4, only iPhoto shoes up. I am able to transfer photos but the phone doesn't show up in iTunes at all. Before my Snow Leopard upgrade, my phone worked fine with iTunes.
I've tried swapping the cable, rebooting both devices (many times). Nothing works. Help!

Have you run Software Update since installing Snow Leopard?
If so and all available updates have been installed, try re-downloading the current iTunes version and re-install it over the existing. No need to delete iTunes first.

    Hi ..
Try a reset >  Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system
If a reset doesn't help, visit the website for your printer manufacture then search for v10.10 Yosemite drivers to download and install.

  • My new 24in imac doesn't recognize my usb external hard drive- snow leopard

i was attempting to do a new time machine back up on my new mac but it won't recognize the usb external hard drive (kaser 250gb). i used it frequently on my old g5 imac, no problems. i plugged the hard drive into my g4 ibook and it recognized it right away. i followed the apple tip of pulling the power plug out of the wall power socket and pulled all the usb cables out as well (i have the wireless keyboard). i let it rest for over 5 minutes and only plugged in my wacom stylus and usb external hard drive. still nothing. and it doesn't show either in disk utility. i also downloaded as per another thread the 3g ntfs system preference but to no avail. the only thing i can of doing is erase and reformat my external on my ibook, but i don't want to risk loosing the data without a back up.
anything else i can try? (before i buy time capsule) thanks

i just checked again by plugging the external into my ibook g4 and checked how it was formatted - mac os extended (journaled).
Then the 3GFS software is not required at all.
i have an idea, not sure if it will work and it will have to wait a couple days until i get my firewire back from a friend, but this is what i'm thinking: my intel imac has a 1tb hard drive. could i use target mode between my imac and ibook? with my ibook i'd attach the external hard drive, then using the firewire and target mode start it up. hoping that the ibook hard drive and the attached external hard drive would show on my intel mac for which i could copy over the external back ups onto my imac. once completed, i could erase and reformat the external on my ibook and then try again on my imac to see if it appears on my desktop. do you think this might work (even though it is correctly formatted already?)
I use Target mode on a regular basis for mounting the internal drive on a Mac to transfer or salvage data. I don't know if you will be able to connect to an external drive on the Target computer. There's not usually any reason for this and I don't know if the Target Mode will enable the Logic board to deal with the USB ports and transfer data. I kinda doubt it, but other more experienced users can jump in here.
I don't think the problem with your external drive is the format, since you've already checked it and it is already formatted for a Mac. Intel Mac's will mount drives formatted by a PPC Mac with no problems, unless your OS doesn't support the chipset in the USB case that connects to the drive. There are some USB drives that are known to not work well with SL but worked fine with Leopard.
You can buy a cheap USB case (about $30) and move the drive from the old case to the new case, or buy a USB to IDE adaptor cable (about $20), or you can buy a larger external drive that will work on the iMac and use the G4 to transfer the date from the old drive to a new one. Or you can take both drives to a friend with a Mac and use Disk Utility to restore the USB drive to a partition on the Firewire drive. That doesn't fix the USB drive to work with your new Mac, but unless the vendor comes out with a firmware fix, I think that's a lost cause anyway.
other than the above, i may just go buy a 1tb time capsule,
I would not be getting a Time Capsule to back up a single computer. Wireless backups are a lot slower than FireWire or USB (of course, it's the initial backup that takes so much time). If you do have several Mac's that need a TM backup volume, then the Capsule can help you out. It is supported by Apple (and there are a lot of users here in the forums). I'm using a ReadyNAS device for network backups, but it is not supported by Apple, and I have to rely on NetGear for fixes if an OS update breaks my backup system.
BTW, it's a good chance that a TC device will be able to see and mount your USB drive. The incompatible chipset problem with some drives seems to be limited to the USB drivers in SL which the TC is not running. That's why I said that a USB hub may also let you see your drive, the problem is there's no guarantee's...

  • Computer doesn't recognize that ipod is plugged in

So I've had this ipod for at least a year now and have been using the same computer for the past 7 months and it's always worked fine. Now all of the sudden my computer doesn't recognize that it is plugged in. It's not even that it doesn't recognize the USB device it's not there period. I tried manually putting it into disk mode but it still didn't recognize it. Please help!!

  • Tecra M4 - DVD drive doesn't recognize any disk under Vista

    Hi,
after the installation of Vista my dvd drive doesn't recognize any disks !
No upgrade from XP! It was a clean Vista installation.
I found several links about the registry entries upper and lower filter this entries doesn't exist in my registry under the class CDROM.
I tested the drive under XP it works fine and recognizes everything.
Drivers are correctly installed no problems in the device manager is prompted.
So i have no idea how to get it working, seems to be a Vista problem
Could any one help me ? I'm really frustrated about this
    Thanks for your help

    Maybe this helps:
    - Remove the CD/DVD drive from the device manager.
    - Then access the registry and remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    - Then reboot the notebook
But what happens exactly? What disks are not recognized?

My Windows 8.1 computer doesn't recognize my iPod nano 7th generation. Why?
When I connect my iPod to my computer, nothing happens. I've read the tips in the section "support" and I noticed that maybe Windows 8 is not one of the operating systems that are compatible with an iPod nano 7th generation. If I'm right, what can I do if my only device is a Windows 8?

    Hi, Grafiti.
Thank you for the question.  Below, I have attached a couple troubleshooting articles that will help resolve the device not being recognized by iTunes.

  • Dvd/cd drive works but won't allow me to install new programs from disk, doesn't recognize the disk,

dvd/cd drive works but won't allow me to install new programs from disk, doesn't recognize the disk, what can I do?

Well I was able to obtain a work around download of Flash and it installed fine but Firefox tells me it needs updating so I go out, thinking I'm "IN" finally to update it and I get that issue of not being able to get the update for it.  It's a regular laptop, not a touch screen or one of those new fangled ones for todays world.  In fact it's a refurb so it's probably origin date was a year or so ago before all this MS stuff took off fully.  So not understanding why I'm feeling like I'm being BLOCKED from getting the updated Flash I need and desire.  If I click on the little "X" and tell it to ignore the warning the vid will play just fine but don't want to have to do that every time.  Must be a better way.
Again, I'm sorry for posting in the wrong forum, getting this posted in the Flash forum was my desire but the way Adobe has this set up I just couldn't figure it out.  I belong to ALLOT of forums and most are pretty straight forward but this one is confusing!

Thanks for the useful feedback, Knucklesmac. I agree. I must have blown something on the logic board -- because I had a faulty old KVM switch that would not switch between computers without some nasty hot-plugging/unplugging the VGA video cables. (wince!). It's like when Dizzy Dean ruined his arm because a line drive hit him in the foot and he readjusted his mechanics around the injury. I take the blame because this has been a great computer, and does not deserve any blame.
If it will help anyone else reading this thread, C2G (née Cables to Go) has some interesting ideas for still getting external video out of this computer:
    -USB-to-VGA
    http://www.cablestogo.com/product/30545
-Convert s-video or composite video signals to high resolution VGA
    http://www.cablestogo.com/product/40971
The price range is $75-$85, which doesn't make horse sense to me for such an old computer -- which has a lot of life in it anyway, because its own 15" monitor is not chopped liver.

You cannot override but you can chage it, the approach depends on the Mac OS X you are using.

  • My computer doesn't recognize my Zen Creative Vision:M (30 GB) anymore

? I still use XP and I have this mp3-player for a year now and it has been working fine until yesterday. I ripped Stefani's first album and tried to drag one of her songs on my mp3-player, but the player couldn't handle the file it seemed. So it fell out, on, out, on and I just unplugged it. Then I plugged it back in, but ever since my computer doesn't recognize it (in the media explorer it also says it's not plugged in). The videos in my library also seemed to be missing all of the sudden (only the maps remained).. and?I re-installed every programm, including windows media player, and the only outcome of it is that my computer now labels it as a MTP Media Player. So now it does connect, but i still can't transfer files or get into the player's system.
It's strange, because many people have encountered this problem and the solutions seem to vary; one even solved it by simply re-installing WMP, which didn't work for me.
    Help would be awesome, guys!

From the recovery screen do a Clean-up,reboot. If you have copies of all your music you may need to Format the player (do not choose reload firmware or anything like that)? http://forums.creative.com/creativel...scending&page=
