without it connected to my computer i start up my ipod,it makes a kindof clock like ticking noise and goes to the folder and ! icon. i try pressing buttons and it goes to disc mode, doesnt work. when i hook it up with or without itunes, it doesnt read it. someone help me with this, it wont matter if i lose all my songs.

See another post about this called "Folder & Exclamation point!"
If the solution there doesn't work, send your iPod in for repair.
It will be repaired or replaced for free if it is less than a year old (i.e. still under warranty).
You can request a service by post, and UPS will send you a prepaid box which you then send off to Apple.
    good luck!

If you get a message that says Ipod_control is corrupt you should put you Ipod into Disk mode by 1st holding pressing the MENU AND SELECT buttons at the same time util the apple logo appears. Then press the SELECT button and PLAY/Pause buttons at the same time until it goes into disk mode. Once that happens connect it to your computer and you will see your Ipod as an external drive. Right click on the IPOD drive Icon and select properties, then slect tools, then select error checking, then select fix file system errors, then slect OK. Once the system files are fixed, this will take a while, your Ipod will be recognized by Itunes like it use too. I know this is a pain, but its the only thing I could figure out and it worked. Good luck!

  • My computer is reading my ipod as a storage drive

    How can I fix this

    Per kbase 93499:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93499
"Windows confuses iPod with network drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear"
f the drive letter after iPod ("E" in most cases) is mapped to a network drive, both Windows Explorer and iTunes may exhibit strange behavior in relation to the iPod.
    Symptom
One or more of the following occurs:
iPod does not show up in iTunes or as disk in Windows Explorer.
iPod does not show up as disk in Windows Explorer (even though disk mode is enabled on the iPod).
iTunes and Windows Explorer report the wrong amount of available space on iPod.
No songs appear on the iPod after an apparently successful update from iTunes.
Music copied to mapped network drive instead of iPod.
The iPod setup assistant appears in iTunes every time the iPod is connected.
    Products affected
    iTunes for Windows
    iPod (all models)
    Microsoft Windows 2000
    Microsoft Windows XP
    Solution
This issue is documented in Microsoft Knowledge Base document 297694, "New Drive or Mapped Network Drive Not Available in Windows Explorer":
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;297694
Changing the drive letter of your network volume should resolve the issue. If you are unable to change the drive letter of the network volume because your programs depend on a specific drive letter, then you can use the following steps to change the drive letter of your iPod instead.
Important: Changing the iPod drive letter may not affect what letter the iPod uses on subsequent connections, so it is not the best long-term solution. If you are unable to change the drive letter of your mapped network drives, contact your system administrator.
    Open the Control Panel.
Double click on Administrative Tools. Note: If you don't see Administrative Tools, look at the left column in Control Panel for a link that says, "Switch to Classic View," and click it.
    Double click on Computer Management.
In the left column, click on Disk Management.
Locate the iPod and right click on it, then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.
    Click the Change button.
Use the drop-down menu to select a new drive letter. Note: Make sure to choose a new drive letter that is not already assigned to a network drive. The drop-down menu will display all available letters that are not assigned to a physical drive. Drive letters that are assigned to a network volume will still be listed here. It is also a good idea to assign a drive letter other than a, b, c, or d, as these letters are usually reserved for other system drives.
Click OK. Click Yes on the confirmation dialog.
    Close the Computer Management window.

  • My computer doesnt reconize my iPod - please help!!

My iPod was working normally until it suddenly shut down and rebooted (as if I had done a soft reset with the Menu and Center button), then an icon of the charger and the words "Plug in to Restore" came up.
I now have it plugged into my computer but iTunes doesnt even know its there, my computer does reconize that a device is plugged in but asks me to "format the device"
I am currently updating my iTunes to see if that makes a difference, but I'm really stressed out about this!! What do I do?!

I assume you have tried everything here?
    iPod: Cannot restore or update in iTunes with error 1415, 1417, 1418, 1428, 1429, 1430, 1436, or 1439
It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

  • My Computer only reads my Ipod as a DATA1 storage and not the songs

All of a sudden the Ipod I have owned for many years is not showing it's library of songs on ITunes and is only showing up as a data storage hard drive. How do I get it to show the songs list again?

This can be caused by drive letter confusion on your computer.

  • DOWNLOADED ITUNES 5.0 NOW IT DOESNT READ/UPDATE IPOD

I just upgraded to Itunes 5.0 today ( 9/7 ) and now gives me this error when I go to update my Ipod " Attempting to copy disk "Griffins Ipod" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to. " Then I updated another Ipod and its works fine with that one ....Some one help !!!!

even though my purchased music folder is now empty, the one song that I actually downloaded from iTunes Music store is now in my library only. do a search of your music to see if this happend with your purchased music too.
Also about deleting the iPodDriver.kext I've had problems with doing this. If you are having problems to since deleting then there is a program called pacifier that you can use to extract the iPoddriver.kext file from either your OS install disk, or iTunes 5 install or iPodUpdater install. Not sure about the link, but I think there is one under the "solution to many iTunes problems"

  • My computer doesnt recognoize my ipod

my computer broke down then i tried to put my ipod in my other computers but they dont recognoize my ipod nano plese somebody help me

First of all, try another port on your computer. Some ports are not connected direct to the motherboard and do not recognize the iPod as well as those that are. Reset the iPod each time you connect it to another port.
Then try with the iPod in forced disk mode.

  • **Looked at Other Posts... Nothing Helps** Computer won't accept iPod.

It's weird. The other day I was syncing my iTouch and iPod, when suddenly my computer. Normally it never crashes okay? I thought maybe it was because I was IMing, playing music on iTunes, and syncing, so it was overloaded. When it restarted my iTouch was perfectly okay, while my iPod was apparently "Corrupted". I pressed restore and waited for what, 8 hours? I restored at least 10 times before, and it always takes only like 4 minutes! I took out the cord and tried listening to a few songs, everyone of them in tact. Later I synced my iPod to my brother's Windows Vista, and his iTunes showed my iPod perfectly fine. I then restored my iPod on my brother's computer... taking only 2 minutes. Then I tried reinstalling my iTunes over my computer, wondering if it has a defectioncy... When I started iTunes, I hadn't plugged in my iPod yet, and yet, it showed a white corrupted iPod on my sidebar... I plugged in my iPod then, and nothing changed... Anyone have a solution to this problem? I need my computer to read my iPod properly because it's what I use to back up my songs so whenever I get a new comp I can just tranfer my songs using my iPod (since my iTouch can't do this) My iPod's a 30gb 5th Gen and my iTouch's a 16gb 1st Gen.

Just an update, after I posted this I put my husbands shuffle on the charger to see what it would do.  Before putting it on the charger I turned it on and no light came on!  It seems something is disabling the shuffles.  Could it be a virus?  I have virus software on my computer and it isn't detecting anything.  Also, my husbands shuffle didn't work on the netbook even when the indicator light was coming on.
