My computer doesnt reconize my iPod - please help!!

My iPod was working normally until it suddenly shut down and rebooted (as if I had done a soft reset with the Menu and Center button), then an icon of the charger and the words "Plug in to Restore" came up.
I now have it plugged into my computer but iTunes doesnt even know its there, my computer does reconize that a device is plugged in but asks me to "format the device"
I am currently updating my iTunes to see if that makes a difference, but I'm really stressed out about this!! What do I do?!

It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive. I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread. He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

Computer restarts when connecting ipod - please help!

Hey, I've recently bought a usb 2.0 card so i can connect my ipod via usb 2.0 as it will be faster than usb 1.1.
There is a slight problem however, almost every time i connect my ipod via the usb cable to this new usb 2.0 port, the computer restarts.
On the odd few occasions the computer hasn't restarted, my ipod has not been recognised in itunes or my computer.
I have tried connecting other things such as my phone and my old mp3 player to the new usb card and they work fine.
Is this a problem with my ipod or just the usb card?
Any help would be much appreciated!

I've had this problem and given the advice to others and it has worked for some. This isn't mentioned in any other advice that I can see but it is a simple check that you should do, not very technical either!
With your iPod plugged in to the computer, first go through the 5R's and other help topics to check the basics (new cable, different computer, different USB port etc.)
If no luck, check to see if your iPod exists in Device Manager as follows: right-click on My Computer, then click on Manage, then Device Manager, then expand the section called Disk Drives on the right hand side and see if the iPod is shown there, if it is, go on to the next stage.
In the same Computer Management box, click on Disk Management on the left hand side, after a few seconds a new box opens on the right and should show all of the disks on your computer including the iPod. Then right-click on the iPod information and it will give you an option to Change the drive letter or path....click on that and then select Change; select a new drive letter which is not already assigned to any other disc (I picked Z down the bottom), save that then exit and see if it works. You can name your iPod whatever you like. If you are connecting a second iPod for your own use, just connect it to your computer and it will update from your existing library. Depending on the size of your library and the type of iPod you choose you can have it update the whole library, selected playlists or you can manage it manually.
When using a small capacity iPod like the Nano with a large library, you can choose the update option "automatically update selected playlists only" (called Sync Music - All songs and Playlists in iTunes 7). This would allow you to create a playlist specifically for your Nano and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPod. Make your playlist a Smart playlist and limit the size to just below the advertised capacity of your iPod Nano (around 3700MB for a 4GB or 1800MB for a 2GB). There's another alternative but I hope you take this as an opportunity to learn an important lesson: Back up your iTunes library as soon as you can because right now you are only one glitch of your iPod away from losing your music entirely.
And it's only a matter of time before that will happen. Many people come to the Discussions having lost their music in such situations and, believe me, it's not a happy time for anyone.
If you place any importance on your playlists and the data they depend on, you will want to include your iTunes Library files in your back-up regimen as well.
Anyways, that's the lecture. What's the other alternative?

if require the new itunes11.1.X
if you already have that and it's windows then uninstall itunes
use regEdit you can type that in run or the likes and search and delete all hits you get on itunes
then reboot windows and install itunes again

Itunes doesnt recognize Ipod, please help, getting frustrated!!

OK today I plugged my ipod into my computer to update it and magically it started updating, i dont know what I did but it updated the stuff that i have added recently. Yesterday it wouldnt update and it hasnt updated for the past 2 weeks. Now after adding a couple of more songs i go to update it again and nothing happens, now what is going on, I have uninstalled and reinstalled both the ipod updater and the itunes updater, the latest software is on my ipod, i reset my ipod because it froze last night, i dont know what to do, I am close to taking it to the apple store but im not sure what they could do about it. Is there something in itunes that I need to click so my ipod will be recognized, this is getting very frustrating, my ipod use to update every single time that I plugged it in, my computer is fairly new but my ipod has worked several times on this computer before, so please anyone HELP ME!!

i am having the same problem and i am going insane. It i had my ipod since christmas and never had a problem till this week. When i plug it in the ipod displays the "Do not Disconnect" but itunes doesnt pop up or show that the ipod is plugged in. When i try to update it the updater also says that the ipod isnt plugged in. Peter. I had the same problem (only after installing 5.0.1). The only solution I found to work was to uninstall 5.0.1 and install the previous version that came on the packaged disk.
Something I noticed, however, is that you can still download and successfully run the most recent iPod updater software. The 9/23/05 iPod updater release works just fine with iTunes 4.7., but it would not recognize the iPod when running 5.0.1 (iPod service error). There is clearly a commong problem with many Windows users with the 5.0.1 release. Don't know if it's a bad iPod service script or what...but it doesn't work for a lot of users (although I, too, had access to the iPod as an external drive in explorer). Haven't seen anything from Apple on it, though.
Would like to see this fixed, soon!

Connect the iOS device to your computer and restore via iTunes. Place the iPod in Recovery Mode if necessary to allow the restore.
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.
