My computer freezes with applications open

Whenever I have skype open and i'm video chatting, with safari pages open and microsoft word after a time, my computer freezes. it starts with the skype page (the video part of my friend) going dark and then all the other windows not being responsive. The audio is working still, as well as my video since they can see me well. This happened a few times alrready. Also, my computer just shut down twice already like this without warning. In order to unfreeze it, i need to force shut it down and turn it on again.

Open the Activity Monitor utility, go to the System Memory tab.
Towards the top of the window, click on "Real Mem," so it will sort the processes by how much memory are using.
Also refer to the pie chart below the list of processes - you want to see a fair amount of green. Just keep it under close observation when you have all of the said applications open.

    Hi All
My computer crashed with lightroom open, since restart I get a msg 'LR encounted an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit'
    I'd appreciate any suggestions

Many thanks for your help, at lease the LR is working now. How do I rebuild previews and smart previews or will this happen automatically?
    Many thanks

  • 13 in macbook pro (early to mid 2011) : after the update, computer freezes with spinning wheel every 30 seconds first with safari and now with all the applications. I don't have any programs installed and still had good enough memory on the RAM.

After the update of my 13 in mac book pro (early to mid 2011) , it freezes every 30 seconds with the spinning wheel and now it just freezes. Ive never had this problem until I recently updated. Also, I just checked now for available update ( which there was one), the update would process till the last step and it shows it cannot be expanded? Now my computer wont even restart (just have a grey screen with a cursor). Can someone please tell me what the heck is going on with my computer?
I also checked the memory and it showed available memory was over 1.5 GB. I dont have any programms installed and do not have backup yet ( dont really need it anyways)
Problems: first with spinning wheel every 30 seconds and now whole computer just freezes when I restart, it only shows grey screen after the starting sound or it takes about 8 to 10 minutes to restart.
This ALL happened right after the update with google chrome crashing. I know my apple care plan expired so I cant even go to genius bar. Do you guys know how much it would cost to get it fixed ? Or any recommendations I can do to fix this?

    Try a smc reset:

  • System freezes with Safari open; what does this mean...?

    Hi:
Once in a while I have Safari open, and then my whole system freezes, even when I have Safari open in the background. The only thing I know for sure is that Safari is open when I get a system freeze.
In the system.log file I found the following warning:
'Sep 17 17:08:12 localhost /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/MacOS/Safari: * Warning: ATSUSetFontFallbacks has been deprecated. Use ATSUFontFallbacks objects instead. *'
Interestingly, I always see this line in the system.log as the last line before my system freezes. Any thoughts?
    Kind regards,
    Bas

    Hi Edwin:
Thank you for your reply. When my Powerbook is physically plugged with an ethernet cable, I will try that. However, at home I connect to the Internet wirelessly, through Airport.

  • System freeze with Messages open

My 27" iMac (mid-2011) is freezing on wake from sleep at least once or twice a day. This began after a Mountain Lion install and seems to be related to Messages being open and logged in when the computer sleeps. This is the only changed behavior/set up from Lion to Mt Lion. The freezes have not yet ocurred when Messages is closed. The computer is on an internal network and some files stored on the network are locked and inaccessible following a reboot. Repairing permissions has no effect. The files become available again the next day.
Thoughts? I know Messages is new and a bit buggy. Am I missing something?

  • Computer freezing with spinning wheel -- Heroku??

    Hi,
I'm having a couple of issues with my Mac desktop.
After it sits idle for more than an hour, it freezes.  At first the mouse doesn't respond.  Then, if I can get it moving, I get the spinning wheel that won't go away.  I have to end up turning it off, then back on for it to work.  I've had the computer for over 3 years and this just started happening about 2 weeks ago.
Yesterday I got an error message when using Safari -- "Heroku -- No app found".  I have no idea what this means.  Has something hijacked my computer? Strangely, I've been getting the same error message on my iPad lately!  Could it have something to do with iCloud sharing information on both??  Sorry for the broad questions, but I'm pretty clueless when it comes to Mac's.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

This forum category is for Older iPods, so I'm not sure how your post ended up here.  You may want to post another question, by going here first
    https://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa
and selecting the appropriate forun category, such as your Mac model or Mac OS X version.
I would do two tests.  Start up the Mac in Safe Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
Although some things will not work in Safe Mode, you can use Safari.  Does this problem happen in Safe Mode?  If it does not, there may be some system extension or background process running when you start up nornally, that is causing this problem.
To further narrow down the cause, start up normally and create a new user account in System Preferences Users & Groups pane.  The new user account can be Admin or Standard.  Log out and log in to the new user account (do not use Fast User Switching).  In the new user account, does this problem occur?  If it does, the cause is likely to be at the system level.  If does not, the cause is likely to be something that runs in the background, when you log in to your usual user account.
Doing these test will allow additional troubleshooting to be more focused.

  • Computer Freezes with X

I got my X-Fi Xtrememusic a few days ago. I installed it and it worked wonderfully. Today, my computer started freezing. I would play Battlefield 2 for about 20 minutes and it seemed fine, then all of a sudden it would just freeze and the sound would stop working. It would totally lock up and I would have to reboot. That's one problem. The other is when I reboot it, there's no sound! The only way to get sound again is to reinstall it. I never had any of these problems with the motherboard supplied soundcard. Please help!

BF2 is also my favorite game, and COD2. I've had the same exact problems with my Audigy 2 ZS and the support department hasn't been very helpfull, and nobody on the forums knows whats going on.
I've tried everything, different drivers and stuff. For me, music is great n' all but when I start COD 2, I can play for about 5-20 seconds then a high pitched screeching sound starts and my PC locks up and I have to reboot. I've tried old drivers, beta drivers, everything. I've tried a clean-sweep twice, and I think I'm going to try the solution with deleting a couple win32 files someone suggested. I'll tell you if it works though.

  • Computer freezes with iPod plugged in, songs show exclamation marks, etc...

    HELP!!!
I've restored, re-loaded, re-installed, updated, etc. but nothing helps.
I plug in my 40gig iPod, iTunes finds it and starts uploading all my songs. Then, after a random period of time, the entire computer locks up. Mouse doesn't move, nothing. The only way to make the computer come back to life is to unplug the iPod.
For the indeterminate period of time that the iPod is plugged in and updating, when I check the list of songs already on the iPod, several of the tracks have exclamation marks in a dark circle next to them. These tracks work fine when played through iTunes, but not through the iPod.
I've run 'Chkdsk f: /F' several times, and it finds plenty of problems and errors.
It takes me over a month to reload all the songs onto my my iPod because it can't upload more than 500meg without freezing the computer up.
    PLEASE HELP!

Having the same problem and judging by the other posts i've read so are alot of other ipod classic users. When I sync my ipod it gets up to about a 1000 songs then starts going really slow and i cannot eject so when i unplug it all the songs are gone and i need to restore ipod again.
I'm getting fed up with this problem i've rebooted my ipod over 20 times trying to fix this problem and i want to know what apple are going to do about it because so far it appears that they are sticking their hands in the sand and ignoring the problem.

  • Computer freezes with iPod

Ok, so I know there are a lot of questions like this, but I can't find any that are specifically like my problem. My iPod has been acting weird any way, but when I try to sync the iPod, the computer immediately freezes. But this is where mine is different. The computer doesn't stay frozen after you unplug the iPod. It immediately unfreezes and the cursor is in a different place. (If I moved the mouse.) So I know the computer is still responding, but it won't bring up iTunes or charge. I would like to back up my iPod so I could do a hard reset.... But, I can't sync it with the computer. So what do I do?  Or is there anything I can do? Please, I need suggestions. I've only had it since Christmas, so it's really not that old. Help! But I just thought of another thing. I think have updated iTunes twice before plugging my iPod in last. So I plugged the iPod in a couple of versions ago, but not untill two updates later. Could that be the cause?

    Maybe here:'
iTunes for Windows XP: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues
iTunes for Windows Vista or Windows 7: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues
I would try removing and reinstalling all the apple software
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
ALso try another cable and USB port. Also see if it happens with another computer to help determine if you have a computer or iPod problem.

  • How to fix computer freeze with external USB drive attached

Hi, My computer has frozen a few times lately when my external drive was hooked in, mostly to upload music to Itunes on my MacBook Air.  Anyone know what's happening and how to fix it?
    Thanks
    Peggy ;~)

the image isnt just 1 big file
its got a bunch of files
som .ini configuration files here and there
the trick is to find which files controls the directory to start loading from
and change the waiting for f:
    to waiting for anything else
external ODD, flash drive, or anything other than the internal ODD cuz its broken
the files on the disc are
    recovery disc+
    .....boot+
    ..............fonts
    ..............bcd
    ..............boot.sdi
    ...................eftsboot.exe
    ......efi+
    .................microsoft+
    ...................................boot+
    ..............................................font s
    .................................................. ......bcd
    .....HDDPREP+
    ............................boot
    ............................sources
    ............................bootmgr
    ......HTMPREP+
    ...........................readme.html
    ...........................toshiba.jpg
    ......sources+
    .......................boot.wmi
    .......tools+
    ..................crtdll.dll
    ...................imagex.exe
    ...................version.txt
    ...................vRecoFastCRC.exe
    ...................XcludeCRC.ini
    ...................zlibwapi.dll
    ....06466XR1.CRC
    ....06466XSP.SWM
    ....06466XSP2.SWM
    ....06466XSP3.SWM
    ....06466XSP4.SWM
    ....06466XSP5.SWM
    ....06466XV1.CRC
    ....bootmgr
    ....Setenv.ini
im know im not super computer expert but as far as my knowledge goes its probably 1 of thos xxx.ini files cuz usually contain settings and stuff like that
they are easy to open with notepad and easy to just change one of them and burn a new disc with the corrected file
i just need someone to help me figure out which one to change and what to change it to the rest is easy

  • Mountain Lion: computer freezes with videos

Just got my new MacBook Pro and updated software to Mountain Lion. Having a problem with videos, YouTube, NBC Olympic videos and the like freezing. Doesn't always occur but after a few minutes, almost everything freezes up the screen and mouse and I have to turn off the computer and re-turn it on. Any idea on how to fix this problem?

The first editions of the Mac Pro (1,1 thru 2,1) were born in 2005 with existsing 32-bit firmware and ML is becoming 64-bit only.
Not that Vista and PCs don't use 32-bit firmware and still have 64-bit kernel. If you ever tried Windows 64-bit you know the trouble we have with that on these models as well.
However, even Windows when it sees EFI and 64-bit OS expects to see Unified EFI aka EFI64 / UEFI 2.x rather than the older EFI 1.x that we have.
You can order Lion 10.7 and use that. Or you can go into the hackintosh route and treat the Mac as a PC almost and dual-boot loader to get there. But you would have to look elsewhere for support and help on other forums.

Not much information of config/settings left there.
Are you using Creative bundled ASIO? Which settings are you using SR/bit -depth?
Have you reinstalled/updated drivers (02.08.0004 is the latest downloadable packsge atm --> see installation instructions).

  • Computer Freezes with dotted pattern and flashing

I came back to my computer after 30 minutes away from it, and it had frozen with no ability to change applications, websites, screens, windows etc. The screen was locked and flashing bright colors, with an odd dot pattern over the screen. I restarted by manually holding the start button on the computer tower.
The seemingly identical thing also happened yesterday, which I also restarted manually. Any ideas on the problem here or potential fixes?

I'm on a MacPro desktop from early 2008.  This is what I found on my screen.  This is taken from an iPhone (the dots may be hard to see but they show up on the right side of the image:
    I'm running 10.7.5
    Procssor - 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory 4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Graphic NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB
    Display 23" DVI
My memory is something I have been working on...  It is nearly full only 46.21 GB free out of 999.35 GB.
    Need any other info?

  • Finder sidebar not updating with applications open/save dialog boxes

    Hi all,
I've searched the threads and can't seem to find an answer to this recurring issue that I'm having.
I save folders to current projects in the Finder sidebar. However, I find that when I try to find those sidebar folders from within the open/save dialog applications that it is often times and old version of the sidebar. In the image linked below note the Finder sidebar on the left and the InDesign CS sidebar on the right. The list of folders is different. The version via InDesign seems to be an older cached version.
    Screen capture: http://www.fabianross.com/forum-images/screen-capture.png
Does anyone know how to update this cached version to see the new list of folders?
    Thanks,
    Jerry

    Try deleting this file: com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. See if that helps...
Seems to me that Adobe is very picky about where the files are kept on the hard drive. You might not want them in the Sidebar. Whenever you do an Adobe software update, the installer needs the path to where those files go. If it's missing in action, it can wreak havoc.
Make sure when you do Adobe updates, if there is a link included or a Read Me file, check that out first before installing anything.
Run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions BEFORE and AFTER any software updates:
Launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.

  • Computer freezes with fan blowing very loud

I got this pc july 2006, in the last 2 months on 3 seperate occasions the computer will freeze and i can't do anything. The fan starts blowing like crazy and the power button won't even turn the pc off. I have to just unplug the pc from the outlet. My pc serial # is not in the ones listed for recall. I don't know whats wrong.

Try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption.
If that doesn't help bring it back to a Mac store and have it repaired under warranty.
Also, you posted in the G5 Tower forum. In the future please post in the G5 iMac forum.
    Cheers!
