My Computer goes to sleep on its own, then just gets mad and shuts down?

I have a problem i hope some of you wonderful people can help me with. I have no idea why but when i am in the middle of something, doesn't matter what i am doing. my computer fan speeds up, then my computer goes into what appears to be sleep mode ( you know blank screen little light coming on then off in a rhythmic way). if i hit a key it seems to come alive and then same thing happens until it just shuts down completely. I had this happen once before and went to apple online and saw that they had a service extension. i guess my computer wasnt the only one having the problem.. I had it fixed by an authorized apple repair dealer listed on apple.com in my hometown. Its acting up again and i am wondering if it could be anything else....... any one got any ideas?

  • My Macbook Pro started freezing all the time & going to sleep on its own for no reason

I've been having trouble for a few weeks with my computer freezing way too often for seemingly no reason - I'm using it exactly the same way I always have with no problems, and even actively trying to have less applications open (which seems to have no effect). I can't always load simple webpages without it freezing and giving me the color wheel and it's just MUCH slower in general. It is seriously making it difficult to use my computer for work  or for fun...
It has also started going to sleep on its own - the screen will just go black (or sometimes BLUE) and the keyboard lights turn off, and the only way to get it to wake back up is to close the computer, wait, open it again and click or press a key. It doesn't respond to any keys/clicks until it has been closed and reopened.
It seems to overheat really easily lately as well - but it does not always overheat when it freezes.
SMC reset did not seem to have an effect. Activity Monitor doesn't show anything crazy, everything is pretty much 0% except Firefox around 7-12% as I'm typing this. 246 GB available on my hard drive so that doesn't seem to be the problem either. Right after restarting my computer it seems better but the problems quickly resurface...
I googled for help before posting this and someone had suggested running the command
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|find tok|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
in Terminal, which they said "Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty." But mine gave this:

Eric - I dont understand how I'd use caffeinate.  I am not running any code or particular script.  My system goes to sleep if surfing the web, or running Word or Excel, etc.
Or..  Are you saying I should go through and type 'caffeinate X' for all of my applications?

  • Daul 2.0GHZ g5 goes to sleep on its own without warning???

    Hi,
I've posted this before about 6mo ago I had this problem and the problem went away until now. I repaired all permissions, have processor perform. set to auto, and have no new hardware or software.
When I go to process anything (render something in AE, launch a radio station in iTunes, upload to my FTP, open word and use word, and untold other processes)the computer goes to sleep. I don't see any errors in any of the log files.
    What should I do???
    Joel

So it's definitely sleeping, and can be woken in the usual way with a mouse click, etc.? Does it wake straight away - or does it have to be left a while?
And there's nothing about "overtemp" in system.log - may look something like this

There are other suggestions in that thread - including a link to

  • Goes to sleep on its own!

My brand new MacBook has started to go to sleep randomly, and then if you wake it up, after 1-5 seconds it goes back to sleep again! I brought it to the Genius Bar, and they reset the power on it, and it worked for that night, but in the morning it started acting up again. I thought it was a hardware issue at first, but I am beginning to wonder because it won't go to sleep on Apple Hardware Tests and Target Disc Modes, where I was able to back-up everything. Sometimes when I start it up, it will go to sleep when it reaches the blue screen after the Apple Logo appears for sometime. I tried to do a clean install of Leopard, and appeared to be working until I came back and the screen was black, and the white light was on, but not dimming and I couldn't wake it up at all. I could really use some help on this!

My computer is about 1.5 years old. It just started randomly going to sleep while I am in the middle of typing/safari/etc. It is not a sleep setting because the computer is active. It is not a battery issue because I went to the genius bar and had the laptop tested (of course it did not perform the mysterious sleep mode for them!) Also the LED in the front of the computer is not on...but when I shut the computer the light comes on and pulses????
No one seems to know what is going on and it is frustrating working on projects and then the computer screen just blacks out on you!!!! I can usually wait one minute and it comes back on with this optical drive sound. I think it could have something to do with the screen connection to the base?

  • Mbp goes to sleep on its own. must be very sleepy. but why?

I just bought my macbook a month ago. It's a 13-inch mbp. Somehow my mbp keeps sleeping off on its own, even when I am using it.
    What is happening?

Assuming it's a new MacBook Pro, it comes with 90 days of Apple phone support, which you should consider using. The phone numbers are here.

  • Macbook Pro (Retina mid 2012) going to sleep on its own

Did some web searches here and elsewhere and saw no list of affected users.
This wasn't happening before Yosemite, and pretty sure it was happening before latest update (10.10.1).
I'll be using my MBP (2.3Ghz i7, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD) and the screen will go black.  Could be in the middle of surfing, typing, etc., doesn't matter.  The only way I can wake it is to wait for it to fully sleep (i.e., no more noise heard), plug in to power, and hitting the power button long enough to wake (a second, not 2 seconds which would reboot).
Anyone else seeing this random sleep behavior?  Any suggestions?

    Hi,
This sounds more like hibernation than sleep - perhaps from a critically low battery condition.
Is there any message when it shuts down?  When you can restart it, does it say "resuming" or something else, or nothing?
What is the battery state of charge shown when you restart?  It might be an actual low battery (perhaps a failing battery) or an incorrect reading of battery state.
Not saying this is the issue, just asking.

I've been having a few problem with my MB pro 17inch (late 2011-2012 2.4 Ghz intel core i7 / 4gb DDR3 - Mountain Lion), it over heats quite often using minimal services and on a few occasions it decided to turn it self to sleep mode, then it boots up iphoto so it can load changing pictures as a screen saver, but the problem is I have never used photos as a screen saver I have all screen savers etc turned off, then I have to relog on any ideas anyone?

  • I installed OS Lion on my late 2009 Macbook and now I am having issues with WiFi.  When my computer goes to sleep my mac won't recognize my WiFi and I need to use the network assistant EVERYTIME to get on the internet.

Very frustrated as my Macbook has been freezing a lot especially when streaming video online or sometimes just by being on a website with a lot of flash.  I've updated all my software and I have 4 gigs of ram.  I do have most of my 250 gig hard drive used up....coud this be an issue?

  • IMac does not go to sleep on its own- HELP!

I have an iMac G4 17", it's about three years old, and I absolutely love it, except now it does not go to sleep on its own. It will go to sleep when you select Sleep from the Apple menu, but not when it has been inactive. In system preferences under the energy saver menu it is set to sleep after being inactive for five minutes (screen sleeps after three), and the screen does power down, but the computer itself never goes to sleep on its own (you can still hear the processor making noise (fans?) and the little white sleepy light doesnt come on) I can't seem to figure out what could be making it stay awake (no applications are running), I'm not sure if it has something to do with my external DSL modem (though i think i had the problem before i got the dsl), I tried turning off the "wake for ethernet network administrator access" and it didnt change anything. Any help?

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
First, read things in Apple doc.#25801 on sleep settings.
Here is Apple doc.#303698 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to recieve faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Recieve Faxes On This Computer box.
If that does'nt work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB cards.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
    Cheers!

  • IMac won't go to sleep on its own

I set my iMac to go to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity. Everything worked as it should until I updated Lion to 10.7.3. Now it seems that iMac never goes to sleep on its own. No new hardware installed whatsoever, every settings are the same as before. I even tried by not running any programs, and it still won't go to sleep unless I force it to. It's a mid-2011 iMac with core i5.
    Any ideas?

I don't have an explaination for a cause.  But in the end, if you don't figure out the cause, try using PleaseSleep which attempts to force the system to obey the energy saver preferences.
FWIW one explaination is that there is some process keeping the machine awake.  Look in the Activity Monitor for possible suspects.

  • Looses network connection when computer goes to sleep... and password ques.

So... I browsed the forum (not too in depth...) and have found anything to help me on this issue.
When my computer goes to sleep I lose my connection. Even when I was testing it out and put it to sleep for five seconds it happened. So every time my computer goes to sleep I have to reconnect to my network and re-mount my external HD. Every time. And on top of that... when I type in my WAP password to connect... I check the option to save the password in my keychain and it never saves it. It saves the password to connect to the external HD, though... just not the network.
    Anyone have an idea?

The keychain is pretty much a central place that stores usernames, passwords, and some kinds of cryptography information (certificates and keys). OS X provides an interface so it's easy for programmers to make their applications use the keychain. That way, all of your passwords are stored in one place. Useful feature, that.
Keychain Access is used to access things in the keychain. So if you have a program that doesn't use keychain, you can use keychain access to display the password for various things you've long since forgotten.
Keychain access is also useful for double-checking that something is in the keychain - or for removing things that are already there that you don't want to have in the keychain.
As for two passwords for your network - that sounds correct. One is for the network, and the other is for the AirPort Base Station. Keychain Access has the "kind" column, and there are two kinds of entries:
AirPort Base Station Password: This is not used to access the network - it's used to configure the base station.
AirPort Network Password: This IS what you use to access the network.
Though your mention of "login" and "system" passwords is making me think you may be talking about the passwords for the "system" and "login" keychains.

  • Computer goes to sleep no matter what I set it to do

I've had a problem with the energy saver settings. I've tired setting it at various sleep modes from 2 hrs. to never and yet it always goes to sleep. I've locked when making the changes, shut down and restarted and when going to sytem prefs it's always unlocked showing the last settings. I've wanted to play iTunes for an extended period of time and it always goes to sleep, is this a hardware problem or any clues as to what I should do?
    Tia,
    clueless

Some things to try, mostly for diagnostic (not repair) purposes:
    1. In Terminal enter the following, one line at a time, & press return after each. (Note the spaces; it is important that you include them.) The first will ask for an admin password before it will continue, which you must type blind & hit return:
    sudo plutil -s /Library/preferences/*.plist
    plutil -s ~/Library/preferences/*.plist
The "plutil" command checks property lists (.plist files) for correct syntax, & with the "-s" option only displays those that the command can't parse. Correct syntax doesn't guarantee that a property list is OK, nor is anything necessarily the matter if it can't parse a plist belonging to a third party item, but any plist files the command returns may indicate a problem with that plist.
    2. Try starting up in Safe Mode & seeing if sleep continues to occur in iTunes. If not, it indicates some issue with a non-essential extension, some startup or login item, etc.
    3. Try creating a new, temporary admin user account. Restart & log into this account & repeat setting & locking Energy Saver settings. See if sleep continues to occur in iTunes, & if the lock continues to unlock as before. If not, it indicates some issue with your normal user's home folder's settings, log in items, etc.
Report anything these checks reveal. This should at least help narrow down where to look for possible causes.

  • My iMac will no longer go to sleep on its own!

    Help!
My iMac will no longer go to sleep on its own! No matter what my settings are under 'Energy Saver', the computer will NOT go to sleep. Rather, the monitor will just turn off and the white light on the front of the computer will come on. The white light does not 'throb', so I know it isn't sleeping.
I'm not running any weird applications preventing it from sleeping, I've tried booting in safe mode, and I've tried resetting the SMC.
This is a RECENT problem - I think it started occurring after installing the 1.0.1 firmware OR Mac OS 10.4.6 update. Does anyone else have this problem??
    AHH! Thanks for your help!
    Jonathan

    Hey everyone -
    Thanks for your suggestions.
David.Austin - yes, my power LED does not fluctuate, so I know the computer isn't sleeping, the display is just 'off'. I do have all my disks set to go to sleep. This is a recent problem - everything used to work just fine.
joejoe - I haven't yet tried zapping the PRAM (or NVRAM), but I give that a shot and reset the SMC (SMU) again. If that doesn't work I'm going to have to do a... re-install.
I'll report back with my results. Glad to hear I'm not the only one with this problem.
Agreed - there is something wrong with one of those two updates.

  • Mini display port - vga only works with lid closed - then computer goes to sleep

my problem is simple, but strange.
I have a 2009 unibody macbook pro. I have 42 in lcd tv. I have a minidisplay to vga adapter and a vga cable. When I try to connect the monitor to the mbp when the lid is open nothing is detected. I do not get any options to change to mirror mode or am able to change any settings regarding the monitor. I can change the resolution of the built in display only. Now for the twist.
If I connect everything, do a restart and close the lid, as the computer boots up the external monitor works. Its the grey boot screen with the apple logo. But as soon as the computer begins to load the desktop, the monitor losses the signal. At first I thought it was going into sleep mode, so I hooked up a usb mouse to keep the computer awake. I tried the process again, and as soon as it goes to the desktop it losses the signal. So I don't think it is sleep mode.
I downloaded the minidisplay prot firmware update, but because the screen is not detected when the lid is open I cant run it. When the lid is closed the computer either goes to sleep or doesn't send the desktop signal and I still cant run it.
Nothing happens if I change between the video cards (9400 and 9600gm). Is it a resolution issue? Do the vga cables have a max resolution that is lower than 1900 x 1200?
    What should I do? thanks
