My computer is running slow, what can I do to fix it? I keep seeing a color wheel as a cursor...

Have a look here...

Basically...
1)  Make sure you have enough Free Hard Drive space for your Mac to Perform as expected...
Rule of thumb is about 15 to 20 GB
2)  And adding more RAM is always a prudent move...
You can use these Links to check which RAM is suitable for your Mac...

Go to http://www.crucial.com
It is Important to get the Correct and Matching RAM
Those sites also have videos on how to Install RAM should you need it...

My MacBook Pro just started to run very slow, what can I do to fix it?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Just loaded lion software.  Now java scripts will not run.  What can I do to fix this

Just loaded my MacBook Pro with Lion 10.7.1 software.  Trying to add printer and the script does not work for loading the drivers and software for that printer.  It goes through the script then says it successfully loaded but asked me no questions about the load during the process.  It appears that the Java script passes right through.  Is there anything I can load to fix this problem.  I also tried to use my internet stick which loads software to select and use this stick.  It does not work either.  What can I do to fix this???

  • HT1379 My macbook pro 2013 is running to slow even when I am using the keyboard, it running with a delay. I upgraded the memories to 8gb but still slow what can i do to fix it.

Good morning I am confronting serious problems with my Macbook pro 2013, that is runing to slow,  even when I am writing this email is running with some kind of delay. I upgraded the memories to 8gb but still running slow . Please let me know what I can do to solve the problem. Thanks in advance. Fernando

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a couple of minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin; clear; Fb='%s\n\t(%s)\n'; Fm='\n%s\n\n%s\n'; Fr='\nRAM details\n%s\n'; Fs='\n%s: %s\n'; Fu='user %s%%, system %s%%'; PB="/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c Print"; A () { [[ a -eq 0 ]]; }; M () { find -L "$d" -type f | while read f; do file -b "$f" | egrep -lq XML\|exec && echo $f; done; }; Pc () { o=`grep -v '^ *#' "$2"`; Pm "$1"; }; Pm () { [[ "$o" ]] && o=`sed '/^ *$/d; s/^ */   /' <<< "$o"` && printf "$Fm" "$1" "$o"; }; Pp () { o=`$PB "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'`; Pm "$1"; }; Ps () { o=`echo $o`; [[ !     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter
    exec bash
in the window and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know your password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
    8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If it happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Running slow, what can we do?

Hi and thanks in advance for your help!
Please read specifications below. My iMacG5 (not intel) is running slow, particularly during start-up, which can take up to 4min. Internet is also slow. I have both Techtool pro and disk warrior (if they would help). I also have a ext HD if it would help to release things from HD. Thanks!
    - i have no login items
    - dashboard: weather, calculator, clock, calendar
    - Internet: DSL
    - Memory: 2Gb RAM
    - Vram: 128Mb
    - Processor: 2GHz
    - OS: 10.5.6
    - HD: Used: 98Gb Available: 134Gb
    - Not using idisk (noted, slower if i do)

    Rod, Miriam, thanks.
I tend to believe that Disk warrior or Techtool pro would not fix the problem, simply because I have both of them and had used them every now and then and have not seen a significant improvement.
By the way, why disk warrior and not the performance tool on tech too?
So the software to clean cache suggested by Miriam and especially the hogging the CPU (i don't understand what that means) sounds like something to try.
Rod, I connect via ethernet using a comcast modem.
So I will run disk warrior first, then run the application suggested by miriam, then will address the hogging the cpu issue and go frm there...
Miriam, I have a full back up on an ext HD.

  • My macbook pro has become agonizingly slow, what can i do to fix this problem?

    I have a macbook pro, ( os x 10.9.3, Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core i7  Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB )
that has become agonizingly slow and unresponsive. there is always a several second response time after every mouse click and it can take several minutes for any and all websites to open. Even when I open my home page it can take a minute. Is there something I an do to fix this problem. I do have Bitdefender running but it did not seem to affect operations when I installed it several months ago. This is a relatively recent development and getting worse. Help!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. It will be slow, but should not be as slow as what you describe. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Made a bad change to login options under user preferences, changed from "List of users" to "Name and password". I shut the computer down, now I can't login in when I turn the computer back on.  What can I do to fix this problem?

Have Migrated data from IMAC to Macbook twice.  Because I had too many admin ids under user and accounts preferences, I was trying not to delete the extras but that they wouldn't all show at login time.  Under Login Options, I clicked out  "List of Users" and clicked in "Name and password".  Can't remember whether I did anything else.  I shut down the computer and turned it back on to test the change.  I get a dark grey screen with all my admin ids in circled pictures plus one for guest, but doesn't let me do anything with any of the admin ids.  I clicked on any one and nothing happens.  IF i click on the guest circle, it gives me a message that the computer will restart with only Safari allowed.
Since I haven't been able to connect my macbook to my IMac so I can login to the macbook through the Imac, I can't get to my macbook.  There must be a way to fix this problem.  I expected to see places to enter name and password but nothing is allowed to enter.  Please help!

First thing I would do would be to boot in to Lion Recovery (Command+R on boot) and run Disk Utility, both disk and permissions repair.

  • I plug in my iPhone 5C into my computer, and it charges, but when I go onto iTunes it isn't appearing there so I can't sync it or copy music from my computer onto it. What can I do to fix this?

Well, I will explain. I got a new iPhone 5C last week, and since then I have not had time to plug it into iTunes on my computer as I was checking out all the new stuff (as it is my first iPhone). I also have an iPod touch 4th gen, which I was using before on which I had purchased lots of music and apps on. I was browsing my iTunes account today to find that a Katy Perry album I had bought was not appearing as "purchased" and available to download, it was instead coming up with the price of £7.99. Since I only have less than that on my account and have not credit card connected to my account, I thought I could at least try to see what would happen if I tapped to purchase it, knowing it couldn't charge me. Instead, I got a message saying that it had already been purchased or something like that. This got me quite confused, as I was sill not able to download it.
Knowing this, I was sure that the songs were on my account, so I got iTunes downloaded on laptop (latest version) in order to get them onto my iPhone. I plugged in my iPhone 5C, it was charging, but iTunes did not automatically open like it did before with my iPod Touch 4g. I then opened iTunes by clicking on the icon. iTunes opened but my phone wasn't showing up as a device. It is turned on and fully connected and charging, so I am really not sure why this is happening. If anyone could help it would be really good! Thanks!
