My computer is slow after upgrading to mavericks
I just did the free upgrade to mavericks and now my laptop is running slow...ugh!!
ran sophos for any threads and it was all clear. any suggestions???
I am having the same issue with a year old iMac with an i7 and 12 gig of mem. The system is incredibly slow and is virtually unusable. Activity monitor shows most of the applications are not taking large percentages of processor loads.. But I get unresponsive applications and beach ball just doing simple things. Even clicks on button and such can have anywhere form a half second t a five second delay from time to time and it lasts for a few minutes. Disutility running repair permissions has no effect. Extreemly frustrating.

Why is my computer running slower after upgrading to Maverick?
So my computer seems to be running slower, doing anything at all after I installed the newest OS, Maverick. Anyone have an idea as to why that might be? What can I do to make it better?
Thanks,

Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read.
Etrecheck – System Information
Unless you've added RAM since you bought the computer, you could probably increase the performance by adding RAM. The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.

OS X Mavericks: If your Mac runs slowly
The above link is not very useful, so if it doesn't help read on.
There are many potential reasons that a Mac may be running slower than expected, but more information is required to begin troubleshooting, much more.
Back up your documents and everything else important to you before proceeding. It is premature to conclude your hard disk is failing, but the symptoms you describe may presage an impending disk failure, and you should have backups anyway.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting:
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
System performance problems for reasons that cannot be isolated to any other cause justify an SMC reset. Be sure to read the procedure carefully and follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem inapplicable or trivial. -
Late 2007 15" MBP Very slow after upgrading to Mavericks
Hi guys,
this is my first post here. I look forward to learn and help others.
The reason of this post is, as outlined in the title, slow paerformance of my computer after upgrading to Mavericks. It was kinda slow from before but this time it's almost unbearable to use it. I used to be able to run VMWare with 2 XP and 1 windows server machines WITH JUST 2 GB OF RAM! Now I have 4 GB and can barely run a single virtual machine with XP and the cooling fans come on just by watching a video on youtube, which also makes performance take a dump.

I understand it says my RAM is way too low, but hve no idea what's killing it. So far I've disabled and uninstalled all DynDNS items. I just read about Chrome's slow performance for MBP's and plan to switch back to Safari (Firefox made my computer even slower).
Thanks in advance for any light shed on this.

I was reading about GeekBench in the discusions and decided to give it a go, although I was able to only perform the 32-bit tests, I got 1268 on the single-core score and 2187 for the multi-core score; I don't know how good or bad those numbers are. Wish I had a before and after reading but I read about it too late, when I had already erased several items.
I will appreciate any further input BEFORE I decide to reinstall the OS from scratch.

MacBook slow after upgrading to mavericks--still slow after reverting with time machine
After upgrading to Mavericks OS my 2012 MacBook became slower than ever before. My MacBook was freezing and the beach ball kept appearing. This seemed to be something a lot of people were experiencing with Mavericks, so after other suggested didn't work, I decided to just revert to Mountain Lion using Time Machine. But my mac is still slow--I now avoid using it because it's such a huge hassle. I have 8 gb of RAM, 5.5 gb of which is free. ~98 % of the CPU is idle. Have no idea how to get my computer back to how it used to be. Any suggestions?
Resetting SMC could solve the problem, if you didn't yet.

Or clean install of Mavericks could solve the problem.

Internet browsing ludicrously slow after upgrading to Mavericks
Hi All,
I wonder if someone could possibly offer some suggestions please.
Everything was fine and running sweetly on ML.
After upgrading to Mavericks, Internet browsing has become ridiculously slow.
Safari, Chrome and Firefox all exhibit the same problems.
Spotlight isn't indexing, and nothing else is 'hogging' any resources.
There are no issues with my routher or modem ad my WindozePC works just fine.
I have seen posts by people recommending clearing the Cache and Preferences files.
Within these folders though, are settings I don't want to lose. (reg info for software etc.)
Due to geographical restrictions, a trip to the Genuis Bar isn't an option.
Could someone please offer some advice?
Many thanks in advance.Hold down the Option key while emptying the Trash.
As for your Mac running slower... make sure there's enough free disk space.
Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space. -
IMac became very slow after upgrading to Mavericks
after upgrading to Mavericks my mac became very slow, i can´t do anything on it without waiting at least15 min. Does someone know what i can do to make it better?
Mine too, I am really frustrated, since I read all reviews and asked some friends and co-workers about mavericks, they are all happy, but my macbook is almost useless now.
I tried using Mackeeper, but then apple says it´s a malware, so there´s my solution....
Anyone with a good answer for this problem ???
Is there a way to download Snow Leopard and do a clean install ?? -
Macbook slower after upgrading to Mavericks
Hello, I'm owner of a Macbook Pro MD322LL/A and I haven't had any issues with Lion (the OS that came with) but after upgrading to Mavericks it changed a lot:
Lower performance.
Transitions in the launchpad are laggy (and also buggy).
Start up time increased.
Anyway, that's why I want to make a clean install of Mavericks. Because I think that all these things happens because of making an upgrade rather than a fresh install (same thing occured with my iPhone and iOS 7, but that's another story )
And my question is:
Is it risky to format the Hard Drive and install the OS again? And do I need to do some things before doing it?(in order to keep the license and else)
Assuming that I need just to format the hardrive and install the OS X, isn't it a "simple" of doing it? (like Cmd+R but making a clean install)
Thanks!This is the report:

As you can see, there's a couple of things that are "bad" so instead of correcting every single problem (that would take me much longer) I just want to do a clean install and thats it.
arthur wrote:
I suppose you could do that with Internet Recovery as well. You should not have an issue in terms of losing your OS license, as long as you use the same Apple ID that you have been using with your Mac.
I didn't understand the license thing, but if I erase the disk and perform a clean install from a bootable USB that license won't lost am I right?
I made a bootable USB of Mavericks just using this simple command:
sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/SINTITULO --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction
What do I need to do now? go to disk utility select erase, and then install using the USB?

When do I need to do that? after erasing the hard drive with disk utility?

Yes, I don't really care about the things that my mac has, all the "important" things were backed up -
Macbook Pro Mid-2012 slow after upgrading to Mavericks
A few days ago, my macbook started to run very slowly on Mountain Lion. This was the first time that I ever had any issues with it. So I decided to upgrade to Mavericks and see if that would solve it. I did a clean install of the OS and it is still fairly slow (especially chrome). It feels like every time I open a new tab in safari or open a new application, I would get the spinning pinwheel.
I ran disk repair/disk permissions and reset the PRAM and still no luck.
Also, when I close the lid, it will not go to sleep.
Could this be a sign that the hdd is going bad?
Here are my specs:
MBP 13", Mid 2012
8gb 1600 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 4000
OSX 10.9.4
750gb hdd 5400rpmPlease read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. It will be slow, but there should be no beachballing. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2. -
MacBook became slow after upgrading to Mavericks
Since upgrading to Mavericks my MacBook Pro has become very slow. I did several things so far: Repairing permissions and Disk with Disk Utility and running OnyX. Both helped temporarily, but after a while everything becomes very slow again. Do I have junk software on my machine that's draining resources? Is there not enough RAM? Activity Monitor shows 0 bytes Swap Used in Memory. Etrecheck shows some Page-outs in red, don't know how to interpret that.

How do I uninstall Google keystone daemon and Google keystone agent?
They are part of Google software update, so if you uninstall Google software update, they should be removed. You can restart afterwards and run Etrecheck again to confirm that they're gone.
There seems to be some improvement when I use Safari instead of Chrome. I usually have >10 tabs open.
I should have mentioned, another problem might be one or more of your internet plugins. If the slowness is mostly when you are using a browser, then there are a few ways to investigate this:
find your internet plugins folder (/Library/Internet plugins), move it to the desktop, and restart, and see if your browser is faster. (There may also be plugins in ~/Library/Internet Plugins, which is not the same as /Library/Internet plugins. ~/Library is your user Library folder, which is hidden by default). or:
restart in safe mode (hold down shift at restart until you see the apple logo) and retest your browser.
in either case, if your browser performance is better, then you can figure out which plugin is the culprit by trial and error.
Are the 2.11 GB Page-outs a sign of trouble?
Yes, that is high. Mavericks uses memory in different ways than before, so some degree of page-outs is normal (Page-outs means that the HD is being used for RAM, i.e., virtual memory). Activity Monitor has several tabs that can give you a better idea of how memory is being used on your Mac. Memory Pressure is one new concept, as is Swap Used. There is a good article here by Topher: Activity Monitor in OS X Mavericks brings significant changes - CNET
By comparison, my MBP (8,2, with 8GB of RAM, and a SSD) currently shows (while using safari, but I have 11 apps open) 137 MB of page-outs in Etrecheck, but 0 bytes of swap used, the memory pressure is all in the green, and 0 writes out/sec. -
My Macbook pro is very slow after upgrading to Mavericks
I upgraded to Mavericks on October 2013, since then my Mac is very slow, I have followed several suggestions in this forum, but the problem has not been fixed. Is it possible to return to Mountain Lion, my Mac had a good performace before the upgrade to Mavericks.

Thak you in advance -
Macbook very slow after upgrade to Mavericks
I don't think I am the same person with this issue but I have read many other boards and I don't even know where to start. My computer keeps hanging up multiple times after I upgraded to Mavericks. I work from home and need to connect via a RDC to access my work computer and I haven't been able to successfully work for more than an hour at a time without freezing. I thought the issue was with my RDC but I think it is with my harddrive after running Mavericks since I have this issue outside my RDC. I ran a etresoft program and got the following report

Mac slower after upgrade to mavericks
Hi everyone ! After upgrading to osx mavericks my mac is slower ....is it normal ??? thanks !
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select the most recent panic log under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
View ▹ Show Log List from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the panic report — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports. -
Why is my iMac running slow after upgrading to Mavericks
I have an iMac27 that up until I upgraded to Mavericks ran quite fast. Now applications take much longer to open. When the computer comes out of sleep mode it takes from 30 seconds to a minute to open. All I have is a very dim grey screen and the only thing I can see is the mouse cursor. I have checked Memory and disk space and nothing seems to be wrong using the activity monitor. CPU 50 - 70% idle, Memory Physical 4.GB 3.97 GB used 7.07 Virtual, Memory pressure in the green, App Memory 1.47 GB, File cache 272.2 MB, Wired memory 620.5 MB, Compressed 1.63 GB. Disk space 999.35GB capacity, 441.85 available. When I did install Mavericks it did come back with a disk error. Then it loaded fine. I ran the disk utility and it found and repaired the problem. Running it successive times since have shown no issues.
Thanks(A) Reset iPad
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
Note: Data will not be affected.
(B) Reset all settings
Settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings
Note: Data will not be affected but settings will be reset. -
Mac is running slow after upgrading to maverick
My macbook pro is running very slow since I upgraded to 10.9
Here's my suggestion:
Fixing a Mavericks Installation Problem
How to manage a failed OS X Mavericks installation | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews.
1. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC).
2. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
3. Re-download and reinstall Mavericks.
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
