My computer is slow, freezes, and often locks-up. What to do?

HP Pavilion Elite HPE
No matter what we do our computer is slow, freezes, and often locks-up.
We use system Mechanic, defraging, and windows security essentials but nothing works.  Please help

DO not  try to use things like "Double my speed. com". First thing is you didn't state how old you PC is. Have you tried clearing/deleting all history and temp files from ALL user accounts? Next, what type of anti virus do you have? Norton, just about every version is known to slow your PC, but  not to the extent of causing major frustration and they do have a start up manager which allows you to run only certain programs at start up, and will only let them run when requested by you. How much memory do you have? This is always a big factor, you may need to install more memory. I think your problem is in the memory capacity, clear out and delete files/folders not in use and you may also want to delete programs that are rarely used or programs that you may not know are installed in your PC by some download you may have performed. You also might want to look at what process are running (you might have high cpu usage) and disable what is not necessary Hope this helps.

  • Hello, I'm pretty sure my fan on my 2009 mac book pro has stopped running. Would this cause the computer to slow down and take for ever to boot up and show the color wheel every time I select an application ?

Hello, I'm pretty sure my fan on my 2009 mac book pro has stopped running. Would this cause the computer to slow down and take for ever to boot up and show the color wheel every time I select an application ? how involved to replace fan ? cost ?
    thanks

Not directly, but if the CPU overheats because of incompatible software, that would cause slowdowns. Do not allow the computer to run if the fan is not working unless you wish to fry your motherboard. Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

my computer keeps freezing and i dont know whats wrong, or why it keeps freezing

It's happening on FIrefox too.  It's not a browser issue!  I have tried all, Chrome, FIrefox and IE and it freezes after about 5 minutes sometimes sooner, sometimes you get a little longer, but not much.

  • My mac is slow, freezing and has horizontal lines.  How do I fix this?

Hi, my mac is freezing, slowing down and horizontal lines appear.  How do I fix this?

Run the Hardware Test in Extended mode.
    Using Apple Hardware Test
    Using Apple Hardware Test
You can use Apple Hardware Test to help determine if there is a problem with your computer’s hardware.
    To use Apple Hardware Test:
Disconnect all external devices from your computer except the keyboard and mouse. If you have an Ethernet cable connected, disconnect it.
Insert the “Additional Software & Apple Hardware Test” disc that came with your computer.
Restart your computer and hold down the “C” key as it starts up. A list of available startup volumes appears. Click Apple Hardware Test and click the right arrow.
When the Apple Hardware Test main screen appears after about 45 seconds, follow the onscreen instructions.
If Apple Hardware Test detects a problem, it displays an error code. Make a note of the error code before pursuing support options. If Apple Hardware Test does not detect a hardware failure, the problem may be software related.
For more information about Apple Hardware Test, see the Apple Hardware Test Read Me file on the “Additional Software & Apple Hardware Test” disc.

  • Track pad freezes and phone locks up

Why does the track pad freeze and then the phone locks up? It takes over 24 hours for it to reset.

That isnot normal. How much free memory do you have?  look in Options and te "memory" in the search bar.  Look for the number next to Application Memory.
Also, do you have any 3rd party applications installed?

  • Pages is clitchy and often locks up

I constantly have to power down to get Pages to work.  It is clitchy.  I have reloaded, and everything.  It is poor program as I have lost documents as well and it locks up at least once a week.  Anyone else having this problem??

I use Pages quite often. Never has locked up for me and I've lost no documents.
I'm just guessing here but do you have plenty of available storage space on your iPad?

  • Freezing and crashing iPhone 5S - What do I need to do before going to Genius Bar

Bought a iPhone 5S in October.  Started crashing, slowing down and freezing up 5 days ago.  Revived it by hard reset (pressing power and home buttons).
Contacted Apple Support online chat, advised to restore from backup, try to use minimal function, and if it still had the same problem, need to go to Genius Bar.
So it continued to crash and freeze, and all the Genius did was to reset my phone and told me to not restore from backup.
My local Apple Store is difficult to get to - middle of town, difficult to get parking, and if this wasn't the holidays season, I would struggle to get to the Store during it's opening hours.  A bit annoyed that I wasted time to go into the Genius Bar today when I could have easily wiped my phone at home!
My question to all of you is, if the phone continues to crash and freeze with the new setup, anything else I need to try before heading back to the Genius Bar?  Don't want to waste anyone's time!
    Thank you.

    PhilipRoy wrote:
crashing and freezing phone is not not NOT related to hardware. It is without dout and with a high level of certainty a SOFTWARE issue which will require restorationg to default settings WITHOUT restoring the backup.
You're still not reading what the OPs are posting.
He has already restored it as new, not from a backup: "all the Genius did was to reset my phone and told me to not restore from backup. "
And, a hardware problem can DEFINITELY cause the symptoms described.
OP, if you have restored the device as new (iOS: How to back up your data and set up your device as a new device - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4137), following those steps exactly,  then you've done everything you can do.  If the device, in that state, is still freezing & crashing, then it is almost definitely a hardware issue.

  • Have backed up my computer. it is freezing and working funky. what should i do

I have sent this computer back to HP while it was under warranty. Have had it back for 7 months and it started doing bad things again. Flickering, freezing. I have Norton Utilities and I've cleaned the registry and drives. Bought a 1TB External drive. Backed it up. Now what should I do.

    mshari_66,
which model MacBook Pro do you have, which version of OS X is installed on it, and what was the exact text of the “running out of application” message?

  • Good day all, I am new to Mac. Just at a time when I am in the middle of something, my Mac will just prompt me to shut down and restart again. The computer will just freeze, and will not respond unless it is shut down and restarted. Is that how it works

    Good day all,
I am new to Mac. Just want to find out if your Macs always prompt you to shut down and restart. Mine happens very often sometimes, and it can be very embarrassing, especially just when you think you are almost done with what you are doing, only for you start all over again. Or, is there anything I am doing wrong, somebody please help, Thanks.
    Francis.

    Hi Francis,
    Are you getting kernel panics?

  • My computer has been freezing and then emitting a consistent beeping until I shut off the power. It has been getting really hot and the fan gets really loud. This has been going on for months. What's going on?

I just had my macbook pro checked out and all of it's systems restarted to solve its beeping and freezing problem. However, it is still shutting itself down when I close the lid and becoming very hot.  When I open the lid again the screen is black and I have to continually hold down the power button in order to turn it back on. Does anyone know why this is happening?
