My computer is slower after Mavericks install
I realize that other people are posting about this very problem in these forums, but I am having trouble following the jargon when folks give advice, so I'm starting my own thread here.
I am running a 15 inch MacBook Pro and I just installed Mavericks over the weekend. Now everything seems to have a lag time of a few seconds and some programs are taking ages to start up. I'd really love to figure out how to get this to stop. I don't know if it is possible to go back to my old operating system now, either. It would be great to fix this and get it to work if possible. Does anyone have any ideas for me?
Here's some info on my computer:
2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Memory
Thanks!
Yes. Some of the instructions in this community can be rather detailed. The URLs below point to such instructions. If you are not comfortable going though these instructions you can make an appointment to go to the Genius bar at an Apple store. They will diagnose and update your software issues for free. Be sure to have a current backup before you make any major software changes, including taking it in to Apple for software repairs.

My Macbook pro (early 2011)become very slow after maverick install
Hi,
My Macbook Pro (early 2011) has become very slow after installing Maverick.
System is struggling to open any web pages, apps etc.. Even booting time is more than 5 mins. My macbook has 8 GB Ram and 750GM memory and also got 200GB of free space memory..
Could you please advice me on this. Thanksetresoft a long time contributer to Apple Support Communities wrote a very useful app he called etrecheck which helps in diagnosing many problems caused by third party installs etc.. Go to his website, read his information and from there download and run the program according to his instructions

Extremely slow after Maverick install; will this improve?
My late-2008 Macbook is running extremely slowly after installing Mavericks this morning. Will this improve as the computer sorts out the new software internally? Or would I be better off going back to Mountain Lion via last night's TimeMachine backup? Thanks.
Spotlight indexing after a new installation can take between half an hour and several hours. The computer will be slow during this time, tagged files may not show in Finder and Time Machine backups may miss files. Also, it will index all partions, internal and attached externally, unless excluded in Spotlight>Privacy. This can increase the time factor considerably. Look for processes mdworker, mds and mds_store etc, in Activity Monitor.
There may be other things slowing the computer initially, such as Dropbox re-populating, apps updating, virus definitions etc. -
Macbook Pro slow after Mavericks Install
Hi all, new here . I have a problem with my 2012 Macbook Pro (2.5 Ghz Intel Core i5, 4 GB 1600 Mhz DDR3, OSX 10.9.5). I originally had Lion installed on it... never bothered to upgrade to Mountain Lion, but about 2 months back I upgraded to Mavericks.
I don't use heavy programs like Photoshop or iMovie; mostly just browsing, email, videos etc. but I may have multiple programs open at the same time. I've never had a problem with Lion.
Now after upgrading to Mavericks, I noticed a distinct slow down. Not super slow... but slow enough that programs would take 5-8 seconds to open. Like Microsoft word, or a second window of Chrome, or Activity Monitor. Never had this lag on Lion.
I've researched upgrading RAM, but I wanted to get your fine folks opinion first on what it could be. Any ideas?Hi PacNorWest,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
If your Mac is running slowly in Mavericks, I would recommend using the information in the attached article to help alleviate the issue.

Having all of these apps launching at startup/login is probably slowing down your Mac's startup time AND having all of these apps running in the background is both eating yo CPU cycles and RAM.
Add or remove automatic items
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
Select your user account, then click Login Items.
Do one of the following:
Click Add below the list on the right, select an app, document, folder, or disk, then click Add.If you don’t want an item’s windows to be visible after login, select Hide. (Hide does not apply to servers, which always appear in the Finder after login.)
Select the name of the item you want to prevent from opening automatically, then click Delete below the list on the right.
Google apps like Chrome and Drive may still not be playing well and are NOT 100% compatible/compliant with OS X Mavericks.
Until Google releases a proper fix or official update for OS X Mavericks, completely uninstall these Google apps.
If you do not like Apple's Safari Web browser, as an alternative, try using Mozilla FireFox.
Mozilla constantly updates FireFox and just released a new update recently and is ,usually, more stable on OS X Mavericks. -
Super slow after Mavericks Install and Re-install
The Hardware:
Late 2011 Macbook Pro.
2.5Ghz Core i5
320GB used of 500GB HD space.
16GB 1600MHz DDR3
Running OS X 10.9 Mavericks
The Problem:
I installed Mavericks and all of a sudden, beach balls all of the place, with every single click. Transfering files into my external hard drive took 8 hours. Activity Monitor (takes about a million years to open that up), shows no major processes or rougue processes running. My CPU usage is below 3%.
What I've Done Thus Far:
- Safe Boot, Still running the same issue.
- Hardware Tests - All passed
- Reinstalled Mavericks
- Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
Took it to the Apple Store, and got the, re-install Mavericks suggestion.
I'm out of things to do. I find it hard to believe that this computer is failing as it's in mint condition and is only used once or twice a week for a couple of hours, if that.
Any suggestions on what do to?Step by Step to fix your Mac

My 6 year old iMac is painfully slow after I installed Mavericks, despite upgrading to 4 GB of Ram. Everything stops and I see the spinning beachball way too frequently. Any suggestions or solutions?
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -
My computer is running slow after Yosemite install -but in the Mail program, when I open an email and then open the attachment -all is good -when I close the attachment the Mail program goes away, and I have to reopen it in my Dock -every time.
I tried this, but no luck. I went to Previous System>Users. There is nothing inside the "Users" folder, so I hit a dead end.
I can find my new e-mails -- those that came in since I re-installed the system -- in my NEW system (which I did to see if I was correctly understanding the advice), by going to Users>Home>Library>Mail>POP account name>Inbox.
Let me add a new question: I am running PhotoShop C3. It opens OK, and I can use it, but when it opens I get this message: "One or more files for Adobe Application Support folder are missing. Please re-run the PhotoShop installer."
I don't like re-installing working programs if I can avoid it, because it always seems to lead to other issues. Any idea what files are missing, and where it/they might be in the Previous System folder?
thanks

Macbook Pro slow after Maverick's install
My Macbook Pro is painfully slow after Maverick update last week. HELP
gramacindy,
yes, thank you. Insufficient disk space is not the cause of the slowdown. Depending upon which apps you typically run, you might benefit from upgrading its RAM from 4 GB to 8 GB — but whether that upgrade would help depends upon other factors.
If you boot into Safe mode, log in, and immediately restart into normal mode, is your MacBook Pro still painfully slow? If it is, download and install EtreCheck, and please include in your reply a copy of the output generated by a run of EtreCheck. -
Lost document files after Mavericks install
After Mavericks install from App Store, document folders located in Dock are replaced with question mark icon; unable to locate files in Trash, iCloud, or Finder.
While I appreciate feedback on backups, never have had issues losing files before when installing apps from App Store. Please advise.I have the same problem. It just accured today, and i updated to Mavericks several weeks ago. I cant open several folders in Finder but when i right click on them it say that they contain eg. 5 Gbit... But i still cant see/open anything in some folders.
Also yesterday (right before i realised the Finder problem) my computer was slow and acting weird so I tried restaring it, and after it sayed that my start-up-drive (or somting like that) was nearly full. It wouldnt start propoly after that, but then after a few goes I got it to work... I have no clue whats going on really.. -

Time machine won't back up after Maverick install
Installed Maverick today on macbook pro, then have been unable to back up to Time Machine to my Western Digital 3TB drive. Last back up was successful just before install earlier today.
Time Machine Error "Files can’t be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be read-only.
and a second message
Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “My Book”. Files can’t be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be read-only. You may need to repair or reformat the disk using Disk Utility. If the disk can’t be repaired, you must use a different disk for backups. Open Time Machine preferences to select a different backup disk.
First restarting after Maverick install I received an error message that the disk "my book" could not be repaired.
When I go to get info on the external drive, under sharing and permissions it sayes I can read only, and I cant figure out how to change this everything to try is grey'd out.
Any help in fixing the problem and understanding the issue.I'm also having this issue. I havn't had it before.
Any help would be appreciated. -
