My computer is stuck on loading screen with logo and spiny thing

Hi my dads friend gave me his old iMac it was the computer and mouse no keyboard and it stuck on loading screen with logo and spinny thing he said it could be curruption in the software or chip out a few millimeters or something with the hard drive any help?? Please

I'm having some difficulty in understanding you.   What is mdnsresponder?   How can you edit files if you can't get past the blue screen?   What are you using to post these messages on the forum?
Let me suggest the following and see how you go.
Do you get the ‘Orchestral’ start up tone when you power up?
You might try this.
Shut down the machine.
Disconnect the power cable.
Wait about 15 seconds
Reconnect the power cable.
Wait a few more seconds.
Press the power button to restart.
If there is no change ...
Try to start the system in Safe Mode.   You can do this by restarting the machine and holding down the shift key as soon as your hear the start up tone.

If the system boots in Safe Mode you could have a software issue and may need to reinstall the OS.    Which is why I asked if you have or can get the original DVD.

Backup in case your disk is failing.  (Post back if you need instructions on how to do that w/o booting OS X.)
Start up in Safe Mode;  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14204?viewlocale=en_US
If it boots reliably in Safe Mode then it is probably a software issue.  Post back for more instructions.
    Reset PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
Boot in Recovery Mode.  (Hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys as your computer restarts.)  Run Disk Utility.  Click on the upper left system disk icon.  Does S.M.A.R.T. report “Verified”?  If not the disk is failing and will need to be replaced.  Click on the icon underneath and indented to the right, usually called “Macintosh HD”.  Repair Disk.  It should finish normally with a green OK message.  If it does not try to repair it again.
If it will not finish with the green OK message then use Disk Utility to erase the drive and then reinstall OS X.  (Be sure you have a backup before erasing the disk.  Post back if you need instructions on how to do that.)
If it repaired all errors and is still not booting normally, reinstall OS X.
If it is still sick after all these steps then the disk probably needs to be replaced or it could be a disk cable.  You replace these inexpensively and fairly easily yourself or take it to an Apple store for them to do it for you at a higher cost.  If it is still under warranty or AppleCare have Apple do it for you for free.  You may want to have Apple check the health of the system and disk before repairing it yourself.  Post back if you need instructions on replacing the disk and/or testing the disk cable.

  • Macbook stuck on white screen with folder and question mark

My macbook is stuck at the screen with the folder with a question mark on it. I have tried a few things like the ones I found on google and so far no go. I tried pressing the command + p +r keys and it didn't work. I also tried to eject a cd and nothing. finally i tried pressing the command + option + p + r and nothing. Guys please help me. I really need this laptop.
I even tried just the command + r. I would like to reinstall OS. What are the steps please?

What version of OS X are you running? When you hold down the Command and R keys whilst booting, do you get to the Recovery partition?

  • TS3824 imac g4 (2002) stuck on grey screen with apple and loading sign

my apple imac g4 2002 wont load up it stays on the gray screen with apple on the front with loading sign underneath.  ive tried almost every way ive seen online to try to factory reset it but nothing works. i got it as a gift a few years back and really need it now. can someone help? please, thanks. Mark

    churpchurp22,
You are posting on the wrong forum, this forum is for Intel based iMacs. A 2002 G4 would be a PowerPC machine, please post on the correct forum. My guess though is the HD has packed up and crashed.

  • Gets stuck on grey screen with logo after restore.

I restored my 2008 macbook and reinstalled OS X lion onto it. It downloaded items for lion and automatically restarted. When it restarted it got stuck on a grey screen with the apple logo and a spinning circle. I turned the computer off and attempted to restart again, same outcome. I restarted it again and pressed command option p r (saw it from other posts on here) and it brought me back to the screen where I can reinstall OS X lion, go to utilities, etc. So I clicked reimstall lion and it did its thing and automatically restarted. Then like last time it got stuck on the grey screen with the logo and spinning circle.ugh! What am I doing wrong? Please help.

Restarted it again with the p r command option brought me to the installing screen again and then said "there was an error installing please try agian" please any help is aporeciated, I have my files on an external hard drive but I need to be able to access my computer so I can continue applying to jobs/access my resume on the external hard drive and it is my only way to talk to my deployed husband besides email on my phone.
I also clicked repair disk in utilities and it says "the volume Mac os x base system appears to be OK" It will not bring me to the thing where I have the option to reinstall lion. I restarted and its yet again stuck on the grey screen with apple logo and spinning circle.

  • Macbook stuck on gray screen, apple logo, and loading symbol?

I just purchased my Mac a couple of days ago. Working fine for awhile, but now it "chimes", goes to a gray screen with the apple logo and the loading sign. It is stuck there and I am not sure how to proceed. Thanks for any help.

Disk Utility can repair the disk this way:
    -Search your installation DVD's.
-Insert the disc 1 and sthut down your Mac
-Start your Mac again while holding down the C key
-Now your Mac should boot from the CD, this can take some time.
-After a while you will see a installation screen where you can chose a language.
    -Chose English and continue.
-Then click some time's next and agree with the "Software Agreement".
-Open Disk Utility. Top menu bar --> Utilities --> Open Disk Utility.
-Select your hard disk in the list of disks and volumes on the left side
-Go to the First Aid (tab somewhere on the right).
-Click the button to verify the permissions.
-Then Click the button to repair the permissions.
-Click the button to verify the disk.
-Then Click the button to repair the disk.
-Exit the Disk Utility and the installer.
    -Restart your Mac

  • Computer boots to a black screen with prompts and code!?

    hey
    I have a Powerbook G4 15" 1.5GHz Aluminium.
I recently had big issues with the computer where it froze and kept crashing. The computer then completly died and i had to take it into an apple store for repair.
While it was in i had the ram slot failure repaired also (go apple!)
The technician repaired the directory structure on my hard drive but noted a program, which he thinks is XPostFacto has some how come to be installed on the system. I collected it and as soon as i got home backed up all the data i needed.
When booting the computer into OSX the startup would go to the grey screen with an Apple and the spinning gear. Then a black screen would come on and present me with a whole heap of code about the system etc the system would then proceed into OSX as normal. I managed to copy all the data i needed onto an external HDD however in the process the computer crashed multiple times.
I have now come to reformat the entire thing, i have zero'd the drives etc however even after that, when i boot from the install CD i still get this screen of code!!
I tried to install Panther and it won't work due to an error in installation..
    What do i do?!?!?
I'm not too up for the idea of taking it back into the shop cause they will charge me mad prices ($120 an hour!) to fix it for me..
    Any help would be awesome!
    Powerbook 1.5 GHz G4 15" Aluminium   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

Boot from the first of the system discs (by holding down the C key until the welcome screen goes away) and, in Disc Utility, repair privileges. Not just permissions, but privileges. Then reboot at normal. That will probably fix it.

  • Macbook not loading past white screen with logo and spinnning wheel?

ok, so basically i have a macbook 10.6.4 Snow Lepoard that is making me want to literally bash its brains out but, unfortunatly i cant because it is owened by the school...
As mentioned in previous posts, my school It dept are incredibly slow and their idea of fixing something is to wipe everthing and reinstall all the programs once again. if that dosent work their other way of fixing something is to send it off to apple. for obveous reasons i want to avoid that.
it ONLY started today, (last night i was happily doing last minuite homework) when its was lagging so much that i did the inevitable, i quit tetris and restarted my computer...
This led to me sitting infront of a white screen and a spinning wheel for the whole lesson. The next lesson i got fed up with waiting and restarted. nothing. I have also notied that my macbook seems to heat up REALLY FAST toward the bottom of the screen (where is says macbook).
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Favvi

well i went to hand it in today but the fails that we call 'the qualified IT deptarment' (even though they are only two), decided to take the day off. they were supposed to be there recess and lunch but the room was pitch black.
When you say that "you do not need admin rights to perform the different solution", i actually am the admin of the laptop but there is another hidden admin so that they can change any settings in the computer without our passwords.
i have previously tried that whole command letter thing for various other things such as safe mode and starting from the disk and have had no sucess. i dont know if my timing is off or something but it never works. however, i have been able to retrive a disk from the disk drive by pressing the mouse button when it turns on.
this is an exerpt from a previous post:

so im really starting to get annoyed now. I have tried that single user mode start up thing (command + s) after the chime, before the chime, hold it down for a second, hold it down forever BUT IT ALWAYS JUST GOES INTO MY LOGIN SCREEN!!! i cant seem to get around this. I cant get into the 'utilities' from my install disk because it asks for an admin name and password. i am literally tearing my hair out…
    Barney-15E:
That doesn't make any sense. When it boots to the install disk, there is no user to authenticate.
Does it have an Open Firmware password set?
i assumed that this was set. but to be honest i have no freaking idea.
also i was talking to a friend today and she said that she had the same issue and they had to replace the battery. although i have no idead on how the battery could be affecting this?

  • Startup unsucessful stuck on gray screen with spinning gear-type thing

I think it may have been because i tripped over my macs powercord and it shut down that my computer wont start anymore, i tried safe boot etc... but nothing works it's just stuck on the startup screen, if anyone has any clue as to how i can resolve my issue, i'd be extremely greatful

    Shturts,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
How long did you give it to Start Up in Safe Mode? It can take upwards of 20 minutes for an eMac to start in Safe Mode as a faceless version of Repair Disk runs in the background at the gray screen / Apple logo / spinning gear stage.
If Safe Boot isn't finishing after 30 or more minutes, use your OS X install disk to boot the computer and run Repair Disk, as described in Using Disk Utility and fsck. If any errors are reported repaired, repeat Repair Disk until it either reports no erros found or unable to repair, in which case you should consider investing in a copy of DiskWarrior.

  • Ipad 4 updating to ios 8.1 - stuck on black screen with logo no progress bar

So, I downloaded the update for 8.1 on my ipad 4 and trying to install it and I notice it is just the black screen with apple logo. There is no progress bar. Occasionally the ipad screen shuts itself off and then back on. It almost seems like it is working but without a progress bar. Though, I am worried as it has been about an hour or so now and I do not have the slightest clue what is going on.

It appears that the download might be corrupt. But try resetting the iPad and it might resume the download and install of the IOS. Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time until the Apple logo appears on the screen, when the device restarts, maybe the update will resume.
However, if you continue to experience what you are experiencing, try restoring using recovery mode.
If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  • Lightening Strike - restart stuck on white screen (with logo)

Power just went out and now our iMac ('11) wont restart.  When I power on, the start up sound plays and then a white screen with the apple and an spinning circle underneath.  After 10 mins, I shut it down and tried again.  Any ideas?

    ChipandTaz wrote:
dumb question but what I looking for?  I did it and then got a screen of stuff and then a prompt.  When I typed "exit" to boot system, it locked up.
I think it was hanging anyhow wasn't it.  The idea behind the verbose was to see what was going on in the boot proccess just prior to it hanging.  What was it doing?  I assume not a fsck since that would be a disk check (like Disk Utility repair) and that migh take longer.

  • Just the gray screen with logo and spinning wheel

    Hello
my computer acted up funny while typing every 10sec or so i got the spinning wheel. i tried to restart but everything just stopped and just got the spinning wheel so i shut down the computer with the power button and now I am just in the grey screen. I used the installation disc and used disc utility I was able to use disk repair and it did something but i can not do anything on the permission they are grayed out. After the disk repair no change the computer just sits in the gray screen and nothing happens . any idea

You need to reinstall OS X. Do this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If the drive was OK continue with the reinstallation. It's automatic and none of your files will be erased.

  • Mac mini stuck on white screen with logo during startup

    Hi,
For the past couple of days my mac mini has been stuck during startup. It plays the startup chime, loads the white screen then the logo appears and it freezes there.
The RAMs were upgraded a few days ago, but it worked fine for a while after that.
Nothing is connected to the mac mini except the monitor, wireless keyboard and mouse. I have tried removing the power cord from the wall for some time, but it is still refusing to start up. I have also tried cmnd+options+p+r to reset the PRAM but nothing changed, I'm not even sure if this applies when startup isn't complete.
    Please help.

When it says boot using install disk you can, if you have Lion or later, boot using Recovery:
