My computer keeps freezing.

It mostly does it when I move it however it also just randomly does it.
I've tried testing each application individually to make sure its none of my applications.
It completely freezes. The mouse doesn't move at all. I can also hear the computer still running for about a minute after it freezes but then it stops. I have to hold down the power button to get it to turn off. I let it sit for a couple of minutes and then hit the power button again. Sometimes it gets to the log in screen, sometimes it freezes again at the apple logo, sometimes it freezes at the blue screen right before the login screen comes up and sometimes it gets to the login screen and I put my password in and it freezes again, or sometimes I get halfway through my password and it freezes. I then shut it down again. Wait, again..and start it back up. It continues the same process 2-3 times. Sometimes upwards of 10 if I'm in a willing mood to deal with it.
I've gone to an apple store 3 times(I believe) to see what the problem is..and obviously those times haven't worked. However now I have started college and the closest Apple store is an hour and a half drive and I only have Sundays off, and thats if I dont have to do homework. In other words I dont have 3+ hours time to continue to take it to a store that the first 3 times didn't know what was wrong with it. Not to mention, its a lot of gas.
The first time I went the guy said that it might be my machd drive..so he plugged an external harddrive to my computer and ran some sort of update. Said that it found a couple of problems with my computer and that it fixed them...
The next guy said that it might be my harddrive. So he did a disk scan. Went block by block on my entire harddrive and it came up that nothing was wrong with it. So then he said that it might be my OS messing up..so he re-installed my entire OS.
The next guy did pretty much the same thing that the first guy did..only he then said that it was probably corrupt fonts. So we checked all my fonts. Came up that two should be deleted..he was pretty sure that was my problem..and told me that if I kept having problems that I should delete all my fonts that have "problems" or show up as something to caution.
Well I got home, and my computer continued to freeze. So I deleted those fonts..and it didn't work.
So I need a genius(hah pun) to tell me either 1) what in the **** is wrong with my computer and 2) if it can be fixed and if so how the **** to fix it.
Thanks,
Rochelle

I have a HP photosmart 3180 and recently upgraded to 10.5.8 "still leopard". I recently looked to install this printer again on network, so I went to hp site and downloaded latest driver (marked 10.4, 10.5) downloaded and installed. Hooked printer up and everything seemed to work fine, until I tried to restart. Upon restart the MOUSE FREEZES and the Apple bluetooth app launched looking for my mouse?? The mouse freezes in upper screen. I tried a different usb connection, nothing? I tried to restart again, zapping pram, nothing? starting to get anxious (computer is less than year old & printer is only three years old) unplugged all usb devices and restarted again.....ok everything works again...plugged in printer ok....restart same problem. So now I have narrowed it down to the printer which for all intent and purpose is still brand new, maybe printed about 50 pages in all.
Since I narrowed it down to be an HP issue, I called HP support. First they wanted $35 because my printer is TOO old for phone support, out of warranty. Was given an option to use chat support by operator. I tried Chat support and was told they do not offer chat support for Apple? (I was sent there by their operator that knew I was running Mac OSX) I was then offered email support, still waiting. During my conversation with HP representative I was basically told that they no longer support that model (because it's 3 YEARS OLD!) I could pay and upgrade to another printer. When asked about the HP policy and driver/hardware support for printers more than 3 years old, I was told " since they release so many new printers, they do not offer full support for hardware more than 3 years out."
Have I lost my faith in Apple? NO it just reaffirmed that non-apple products and support are crap.
They will not help you unless you pay another $35....in which case I was told again this is only "best we can do" help and will not guarantee that they can get things to work. Way to stand by your product, HP !!
So, I will never by another HP product again as they refuse to stand by their own hardware past 3 years!, by their own admission. I can use the printer as long as I unplug it when not in use. lol

  • I upgraded to Mountain Lion and now my computer keeps freezing.  How to fix?

I upgraded to Mountain Lion and nowmy computer keeps freezing.  How do I fix this?

I know you have 10.8.4. I'm asking you to download and install a Combo updater. This is not the same updater used through the App Store when you simply upgraded from 10.8.3. And, before you do that I suggest you do this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

This forum is for people to discuss issues with other users. Apple aren't here. No one here can give you your money back. So, contact the the App Store support, if that's where you bought it. There's a link on the right hand side of the App Store window.

  • Installed new Ram & 10 minutes after startup the computer keeps freezing.

I have mac book pro from 2006 (1.83ghz)  I recently installed 2 new 1G ram chips from crucial for a total ram of 2G. I am running osx 10.6. and 10 minutes after startup the computer keeps freezing.  Could it be that 10.6 is too much for the processor?

10.6 is not "too much for" your MBP. You may have gotten a faulty RAM module — it happens.
Start your machine up while holding down the D key, and when Apple Hardware Test appears, select the Extended Test. Run the extended test at least once all the way through, if you can, and post back with the exact text of any error message it reports.
If the test can't be completed, you definitely have a hardware problem, and the first suspect is the new RAM. In that case, reinstall the RAM that originally came in your machine and run the extended test again. If it is completed without errors this time, the Crucial RAM is clearly at fault and should be exchanged.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

my computer keeps freezing and i dont know whats wrong, or why it keeps freezing

It's happening on FIrefox too.  It's not a browser issue!  I have tried all, Chrome, FIrefox and IE and it freezes after about 5 minutes sometimes sooner, sometimes you get a little longer, but not much.

  • HELP PLEASE!  I am working with GH4 4k footage in adobe preimere and the computer keeps freezing... any ideas?

HELP PLEASE!  I am working with GH4 4k footage in adobe preimere and the computer keeps freezing... any ideas?

Thanks for your response.  I'm sorry for the lack of details, but posting a question on this forum is completly new to me, so I guess I am learning how it works.
I have to be honest, I am a novice to video editing, but I am here to learn so I will provide all the info I know and please let me know if it is enough...
I filmed my first feature film on a Panasonic GH4. We filmed in 4k (compressed files).  I am about 900 GB of total files for all the footage.  I am currently editing on a 17' Toshiba Satellite i7 with 750 GB of space and I believe 8 gb of ram.  All of the footage for the film is not on the computer, but stored on a 1 TB external hardrive (Rugged Lacie is the name of the hard drive).  I am using a usb 3.0 from the hard drive to the computer.
I actually was able to get through about 17 mins of edits for the film before I started to experiencing the computer completely freezing up on me.  I tried using a different hard drive, and same issue.  A friend mentioned it might just be the computer is not powerful enough to edit all the footage, but he wasn't for sure considering the computer is less than a year old and is on the higher end for a toshiba.
I am requesting advice on how to continue editing the film without the computer crashing if that is even possible with using the same computer.  If not what would be my options?
    Thank you!

  • My Mac Pro starts up when I turn on the power, BEFORE I switch it on with the button, why? Plus, my computer keeps freezing and blacking out.

My Mac Pro starts up when I turn on the power supply (when I plug it to the outlet), BEFORE I switch on the button on the computer, why is this happening? Plus, my computer keeps freezing and blacking out and I'm forced to restart it, that's when the compter starts on its own when I turn on the power.

    Hello Engender,
I should have followed up with a progress report because I eventually eliminated all the problems I was having with my Mac Pro, now it's behaving like a new computer… beautifully.   I did originally take Grant's advice above, changing the setting that I had in the System Preferences > Energy Saver but that only stopped from rebooting on its own when I shut down my Mac properly.  Otherwise it continued to restart on its own after freezing or crushing when I switched on the power.  I took my machine to the Apple Store and after many tests they couldn't find anything wrong with it.  I was very depressed about the whole business.
It was after going onto many of the other Apple related websites that I discovered that it wasn't a faulty power switch or fan, as as I originally thought, but found out that my problem was related to the Graphic Card and possibly I did not have enough ram (I had the original amount of 2 GB).  The original card that came with the computer: 512 MB ATI Radeon X1900 XT was over heating and forcing my machine to shut down, I think it was because I had upgraded to OSX Lion which on its own requires at least 2 GB of ram to operate well.  I added 4 GB of Ram to the 2GB I had (4GB kit (2GBx2), Apple 240-pin FBDIMM, DDR2 PC2-5300 upgrades for Apple Mac Pro (4-core) 1st Gen. - 2006-2007 Desktop/PC, CT579443 from Crucial.com about $160 for the set) and replaced the Graphic Card with ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB from Apple (around $260), (ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro (Mid 2010) - Apple Store (U.S.))  This card works very well with my original Mac Pro 2008.  I installed it about two weeks ago and no problem with it starting on its own, over heating or freezing.  OSX Lion works well and I'm thinking of upgrading to Mountain Lion once I learn that my Mac Pro 1.1  will work with the new hardware I installed.
Your problem could just be the power cord but I agree with you that doesn't sound right, when I mentioned faulty switch I meant the part where the power cord meets the power button, the unit which houses the power distribution, I thought at first that it could be faulty but changed my mind because of the computer overheating.
I don't know if this is of any help to you but I hope your trouble will be solved with the new cord.

  • Computer Keeps freezing up

Hello all, new guy here. My problem (and I have looked at past questions but gave up after page 60 something), is my computer, (PC), keeps freezing up when I am trying to copy a cd onto itunes. Sometimes I can copy 1 or 2 cd's without a problem and then it freezes. Other times I can't make it past 1 song without it freezing up. It is getting very frustrated. I have done all I can think of.
    -deleted itunes and reinstalled
-deleted and reinstalled onto different hard drive
-reformatted computer and did the 2 steps above, again
-looked throught the internet for clues
Now I am at a lost for help. I didn't have this problem for my first month or so, then it started happening. I thought I might have gotten a bug or downloaded something bad, but I wiped the computer clean and it was fine until I downloaded Itunes again.
Please help me, and I don't know a lot about computers, my brother-in-law had to do the reformating for me. So please if you can help "dumb it down" for me.
    Thanks,
    Phishman73

I just did the cd diogn. I am looking into the bios update. I have a gigabyte motherboard. Everything was purchased separtly and built by my brother-in-law (my tech support most of the time). here is my cd diogn.

If you have multiple drives on the same IDE or SCSI bus, these drives may interfere with each other.
Some computers need an update to the ATA or IDE bus driver, or Intel chipset. If iTunes has problems recognizing CDs or hanging or crashing while importing or burning CDs, check the support site for the manufacturer of your computer or motherboard.

    Hi,
That is a question you should ask MSI directly....................
I am update drivers etc....... by me. I know what is being updated and why. If I see an update is not needed, I don't update. (Don't fix/update things if not broken)

I can't seem t find your model in the Toshiba US support site.
However, usually, you tap the F8 key while powering up and it brings you into the Start Up recovery menu.

  • My computer keeps freezing with the rainbow swirly thing.

My computer continually freezes on me with the swirly little rainbow ball....sometimes lasting more than 10 minutes.  I have tried shutting it off and then back on.  But the rainbow is there as soon as it's turned back on.  I don't know why or what to do and it is extremely frustrating.

Try repairing your hard drive with disk utility, also repair your permissions. If that don't work open activity monitor and check your CPU and RAM usage.  A program could be using most of your resources.

  • Ever since downloading your update a few minutes ago, my computer keeps freezing up for a few seconds & then starts going again. Why? Is it the update?

I downloaded your update sent about 10 minutes ago. Ever since I did so, my computer started freezing up for a few seconds, and then it starts going again. This is annoying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do something to fix this. It started happening with your update.

Why start a new and very similar thread to your other one which you have not responded to (have you read the replies?)
I suggest that no response is made to this duplicate thread.

  • My computer keeps freezing when I add a picture to my power point with the small rainbow circle spinning.

My computer keeps freesing when I add a picture to my power point. The small rainbow circle keeps spinning.

    Cheryl,
Can you provide a little more information so we can help you?
What is the configuration of your MBP? Model, version of OSX, RAM, etc.
How are you adding the picture to Powerpoint? Drag and drop, or import via menu.
Which version of Powerpoint are you running?
How big is the picture in Kb or Mb?

  • Why does my computer keep freezing after waking from "sleeping"?

I'm running Lion (10.7.2) and frequently, not everytime, but often, the computer will freeze about 1-2 min after I've woken it from sleep – there are usually 1-2 applications open and then I can work for about a couple minutes and then it freezes and the only way to resolve it is to power it off w/ the power button and then restart.
I've got a late 2008 15" MacBook Pro, 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM – there is very little on the hard drive, but that seems irrelevant here anyway.
    Thanks for any tips/help!
