My computer keeps losing its wireless connection

I have a second gen Airport Express connected to a DSL modem; my main computer is a Mini, late 2012 model, running Mountain Lion on 8 gb ram. On this network, I normally also connect a MacBook running Leopard, and iPad and an iPhone.
The Apple Airport Express model is not the newest, it is A1264 54 Mbps Wireless N Router (MB321LL/A). I've been using it about 2 ½ years without problems.
Just recently, however, my Mini has stopped holding on to the connection. At first, I figured it was a network issue, but I've done' some trouble shooting and find that is not the case. The network is fine when I plug ethernet direct from the modem into my computer, and I have even gone so far as to set my computer up as the wireless point of connection for the other devices, and the connection speed makes me think that the wireless card in the computer is operating just fine.
When the Airport is the wireless connection point, all the other devices have no problems, but the Mini is just awful; I have found after considerable frustration that when a page fails to load or another call to the network fails to execute, I can mouse-click the wireless symbol on the menu bar and see that the Wi-Fi is "looking for Networks," and after a brief pause with the spinning wheel animation, it finds my network in the list and turns itself on.
Forgive me, but WTH? I suspect this is something fairly simple, a setting, but what? I was all set to buy a new Airport Express, but I really don't want to if this is something fixable.
Does anyone know what's going on here?
I can tell you that the modem is set to "bridge" mode. After 10 years, the modem was replaced about a year ago, but I've had this setup for about 11 years, DSL in to a DSL modem to wireless router (always the original Apple Airport Base Station or an Airport Express, I've cooked a couple over the years).

Thanks, that may put me closer to a fix, but I'm not there yet.
I'm not sure I made it clear, what's happening is the WiFi grip on the internet hangs and then drops. I have learned that when the browser progress bar halts or a podcast download slows to a crawl, I can click the WiFi icon on the top menu and it will sometimes goose the network back to a secure connection and the task will complete; other times it drops entirely, forcing me to restart everything.
I have now ordered a new Airport Express, but won't have it until the week-end. I will then have 3 months of phone support. I was shocked to find Apple has raised the price for phone support, and while I did get a little free help yesterday, all the woman really did was get me to buy new stuff. I can't afford this. And I will bet that the new router will not solve the problem.
I am trying to use the Wireless Diagnostics app to get some idea of what is causing the connection to hang and fail. The Apple support person did not suggest this, but I am using the utilities feature to actually watch the connection struggle and then drop; I then generate a WiFi report and try to see what was happening when the failure occurred.
Sometimes these drops are temporary, and sometimes they require a modem and router re-start.
The problem is, I have no idea what these reports mean. I have tried to read the instructions, and I'm not doing very well at that. AFAICT, there is no problem with any of my settings. Other devices on the network do not lose connection the way the mini does. I don't use any location settings. so that's not applicable. I have gone over the "best practices" list and think I'm in compliance with all the recommendations. It seems odd to me that the Apple page [About Wireless Diagnostics - Apple Support] tells the user what's in the diagnostics report, but does not mention what to do with the information, how to understand it or use it.   I have been watching the performance graph, and sure enough, when the connection fails, the graph reflects the failure. It operates in the excellent range most of the time, or slips into the "good" range, but I have not seen it in the poor range, it just drops. Then the Airport Untility shows the router with a yellow triangle sign with an exclamation point in the middle.
I can post the WiFi logs if anyone can understand them.

  • Satelite C660 keeps losing its wireless connection

    Hi
We have bought the above laptop for our son for christmas and it keeps losing its wireless connection, we also have a Satelite L450 which is running fine (not losing internet connection) we have been onto our broadband supplier they have told us that as the wireless connection on our other laptop is fine, it is something to do with the C660, one of the drivers needs an update, unfortuneately I have forgotten the driver name but it is something to do with the modem, Our son is desperate to use his laptop.
    Can anyone help?

Had the same problem but with a different Satellite model - the signal was fine on another laptop in the room - the problem was the power management option / power plan - the link below says it all but in short if it is on balanced the default option the default means that it tells the router to go into a power save mode that it might not support.

Have a read, hope it helps as it worked for me and is a very simple solution!

Sorry just realised it was covered in post above, I just expanded on it a little.

  • My iMac G5 keeps losing its WiFi Connection

I have 3 macs working off my wireless router.  Two out of three are still working fine, but the third (an iMac G5) keeps losing its network connection and either won't find the network or, if it does, will not allow me to rejoin it, even after entering the relevant key/password. It has been in the same location in my house and has worked fine for the last five years.  But oddly, if I move the G5 to within a few feet of the router it starts working again (though sometimes seems unable to find the network, although when it does it will let me join it, hassle free).
Have spoken to some Apple guys and, following their advice, have gone into SYSTEM PREFERENCES, NETWORK, LOCATION but having got that far a pop-up appears telling me that an application has changed my network settings.  Zapping OK, this dialog box just keeps re-appearing and the only way I can get out of this corner is by 'force quit'.
    Can you help?
    Thanks
    Dave

Because of a "feature" in the Security Update 2008-006 for OS X 10.4.11, sometimes 10.4 systems repeatedly display the message "Your network settings have been changed by another application." This message is sometimes accompanied by dropous in wireless connectivity. This issue went away with 10.5 or later.
The potential fix is as follows:
Delete the following files from Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    NetworkInterfaces.plist
    preferences.plist
    com.apple.nat.plist
then restart. Before doing this and deleting these files, be sure to write down the names and passwords required to log in to your router as all these settings will be lost and will have to be re-entered.

I bought a new MacBook Pro several months ago.  I keep losing my wireless connection (my wife, sitting several feet from me has no problem with her iPad2).  I find the quickest fix ix to turn Airport off and back on.  Very annoying.   Suggestions please?

What kind of wireless router are you using? more importantly which protocol are you connecting with? Are you and wife connecting using the 2.4Ghz band? or do you have a dual band router that offers the 5GHZ band?  Are you both connecting vie 802.11 a/b/g or n?
The best thing to do is to go into SYSTEM PREFERENCES and select NETWORK, then select AIRPORT and click on the ADVANCED button.
Under the AirPort tab you should delete all the preferred networks and only add back in your network with the proper security settings and passwords.
If you hold down the option key on your keyboard while clicking on the airport icon at the top on your macbook pro. you'll seesome data that will tell you what band and mode you're connecting at, as well as in an indication of signal strength (RSSI) if you write down and post back that information it'll tell us what's going on.

  • I have a brand new iMac (late 2012) that keeps losing its internet connection

I have a brand new iMac (late 2012) that keeps losing its internet connection - like every five minutes. I have had it for three weeks. During the first two weeks, it worked flawlessly. However, just as the refund period ended - it became desktop dead weight. Suggestions?

did u ever get a solution to this?  I have the same 2012 mines 27". It drops after sleep sometimes and can't find anything. Wifi. Connection to the Internet. I pull up network assistant it just gives me blank stares and restart everything. It doesn't even see the time machines and they are still there. I have it right now in full error and my iphones allowing me to see everything as connected and I'm posting here in the forum while my iMac cannot. Doesn't happen all the time. Not sure why it happens or what's goinng on with It. Works great and then sudden wifi failure to recognize.

  • IPad keeps losing its internet connection since updating to OS 8.1?

Since updating to the latest OS my iPad keeps dropping its internet connection. It has to be shut down and restarted then its back on line, but a while later will drop out again. What is wrong, and what can I do to correct it?

Try freeing up some memory by clearing open apps running in the background. Most people don't know this, but if you have a ton of apps running it can cause a few to crash. Double tap the home button to bring up the bottom. Every app down below is running in the background. Hold your finger down on one till they wiggle. Hit the minus button on all of them. It's good to clear this out of stuff your done using.

  • My iPad keeps losing its network connection.  All of the other wireless devices in my house are fine.  Any ideas as to what may be causing this?

I have an IPad 1 with 16 G of memory and wiFi only.  For the last 2 days it has been dropping off of the wireless network repeatedly.  I have a wireless laptop next to it that is fine.  I am working where I normally do and have had no problems until the last couple of days.  My other IPad works just fine and my macbook pro is also having no problems.  Does any one have any idea where to begin troubleshooting?

Just a follow up with a successful ending, I think.
Got the replacement iPad2. Synced it on itunes, put in my old SIM card, and tried it out. I was heartbroken when it had exactly the same problem with wifi connectivity! Dropped my home wifi connection every few minutes or seconds. Had to be prompted to find home network.
Then I tried turning OFF "Ask to Join Networks" as suggested by another poster on Apple Support. Suddenly, I had steady wifi connectivity. I left it that way overnight and even when I woke it from hibernating, it was still connected to wifi!!
Thinking I found the answer, I decided to go back to my original iPad2. I had previously used "Erase All Content and Settings" when I received the replacement iPad2 and so, had to Restore from my iTunes. After doing that, my original iPad2 now holds a wifi connection!! (And I did NOT turn off "Ask to Join Networks".)
So was it fixed by my erasing all content and settings and then restoring it back? Maybe. I called Apple Support again and they did not have any answers or suggestions. They did say that turning off "Ask to Join Networks" would have no effect on connectivity but it did stop the iPad to keep prompting me to choose a network to join!
I would be interested if this "fix" works for anyone else because I see it is a fairly common complaint.

  • Why does my Macbook Pro keep dropping its wireless connection?

    Hi everyone,
Last year I purchased a 2013 Macbook Pro 13". Everything had been working well up until yesterday afternoon. My wi-fi connection keeps dropping roughly every 5 minutes for no apparent reason, with an exclamation mark flashing over the signal strength icon. It runs on Mavericks with all software updates etc. up to date. I live in a student house with 7 other people, so the network could be overburdened, though it's been fine until now. I've reset Safari, deleted info regarding the wireless network and reinstalled it, and deleted all the keychain info, but it hasn't really helped.
I would be grateful for any responses, thanks!

    Hello aidenhh,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with Wi-Fi on your MacBook.  I would be concerned about this too.
I recommend following the steps in the section labeled, "Symptom: The network connection drops unexpectedly" in the following article to resolve an issue like the one you described:

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Community.

  • I run Windows Vista 64 bit and just installed Firefox 4. I keep losing my Wireless connection and Firefox lost my Bookmarks, how can I fix it??

I also run Zone Alarm security

I had the exact same error message but it was on an Airport Extreme Base Station. I use a Macbook at my office and there are 2 XP desktops as well and we were using a shared storage hooked into the AEBS in order to share files. One day all of a sudden the XP machines starting displaying the same error message that NetBIOS should be enabled.
After googling every available article I discovered what ultimately solved our issue.
I opened the the Airport Utility app on my Macbook I clicked on "Manual Setup"
    Then "Disks"
    Then "File Sharing"
I discovered that the default name under "Workgroup" was Workgroup, but our network in the office is called "MSHome" so I changed it to match the PCs and instantly both PCs connected to the shared storage.
Also I changed the 2.4Ghz channel to a number other than the default 11.
I changed the name of the base station to a name less than 8 characters with no spaces and no symbols.
I changed the Wireless Security to "WPA/WPA 2 Personal".
I've been trying to add my fix to other Apple Support pages and they're all archived and closed to replies, so if you haven't gotten your TC to work, maybe this might help.

  • I keep losing my wireless connection after periods of inactivity - any solution? I recently installed a new wireless router with improved range.

I recently installed a Netgear Wireless router for improved reception, but now my macbook loses connection through Airport after periods of inactivity.  We have another older Macbook in the house, and it never loses connection.  I never had this problem with the previous Linksys router, just limited range.  Any ideas what is causing this?  It's frustrating to have to frequently shout down and re-boot.  That so far is the only way I can re-connect.

  • How do I keep my Ipad from dropping its wireless connection?

How do I keep my Ipad from dropping its wireless connection?
Most of the time, my iPad does not maintain a connection to the interenet via my wifi router. My PC laptop has continuous connection, so I know it is not the internet connection.
Is there a way to trouble shoot this? Can I purchase a dedicated IP Address for my Ipad? This is beyond aggrevating since internet activity is the main reason I purchased the pad.
    Your help is greatly appreciated.
    Poet Margo

I would suggest that you give Apple Tech Support a call and go over your settings under WI-FI and General Settings as well as your router settings etc.. There are all sorts of things I could tell you to try but this forum is not the best place to go over all the numerous settings that could be the issue. Just call them and they will walk you through the proper trouble shooting steps.

  • ITunes keeps losing its connection with my iPhone 5 - anyone else seeing this?

    Hi
UK iPhone 5 user here - iMac with Mountain Lion.
iTunes sporadically keeps losing its view of my iPhone 5 which I have set to sync over wi-fi (Apple Extreme Base Station)
I know it will redetect it once I lightning connect it back in but isn't the point of wifi sync is so you DON'T have to do that.
Doesn't seem to retain much memory of the connection.
Anyone seeing this? Or know why?
    Cheers

I have this happen to me all the time. I have an iPhone 4, iPhone 5, and iPad 2 all set to sync through wifi to my iMac. At any given time, one or more of them will drop from the list of devices.
The easiest and most reliable way for me to get around it is to turn wifi off on my iMac, wait a second, and then turn it back on. The missing device suddenly reappears 99% of the time. For the other 1%, I also have to quit and restart iTunes. This is much faster than rebooting the device, which is what I was doing until I learned of the Mac wifi toggle tip.
