My computer keeps on shutting down randomly

My computer keeps on shutting down randomly. What can I do?

Welcome to Apple Discussions
Help us help you. The more complete the description of your problem is (what OS you're using, what Application you're using, recent software installs or updates, a full or screen shot or the text of any error messages) the more assistance we can provide, and, the sooner we can provide it.
Under your profile there's no data about the age of your MBA, the OS it's using. This is helpful for us to know because there's a phenomena with machines recently updated to Mavericks that have unusual sleep/wake behavior.  There are other issues particular to certain combinations of machines and software.
Is this happening when the computer is on battery or plugged into the mains (wall outlet)?
How long has it been happening?

  • As of late, my COMPUTER has been shutting down Randomly.....

Ok here is what is happening. I am on the compuer, and all of a sudden the whole screen goes black and the computer sort of shuts down. but not completely. i can't see anything or do anything, but when i hold down the power buttton and push it, after man tries, it eventually shuts all the way down. and then it takes a couple more pushes to turn the computer BACK on. the fan comes on, and it restarts. i am using Tiger, its a 1.2ghz ibok g4. and i'm about to cry.

Hi, Brenda. You have found the G3 Dual USB iBook Forum, but don't cry. The iBook G4 Forum can be found here:

Maybe someone there can help you out.

  • Computer keeps crashing/shutting down while syncing -?USB fail?-

    Hi,
I recently bought a new Ipod Touch 32gb. But there's one small thing that keeps annoying me. Everytime I connect my Ipod to my computer, it shuts down under 5 minutes. (It did manage to stay connected for 30 minutes, once...)
So I went to the computer store to "let it fix the problem". They told me that it was a problem with my USB-drivers and that they had solved the problem. Once I came home the problems began again.
Does anyone know what I have to do to fix this problem without buying a new chipboard or computer if it's my USB-driver? Or do I have a virus or such?
    Thx!

I don't believe this is a driver or a virus issue. My 64gb is a month old and doing the same thing. I wrote to Apple for advice and they responded "try using the forums for information". No joke.
Every time I sync the device it causes my PC to freeze and sometimes crash. Am also running a 2nd gen Touch with no such issues, syncing fine. My 3rd gen also keep "verifying", sometimes for ten minutes at a time. Have already had to restore the iPod once and think I will have to do it again. Touch screen also freezes intermittently and data I've transfered is frequently corrupted.
I'm trying to get a replacement from the retailer but this and several other bugs really need to be addressed directly by Apple for such an expensive item.

  • My computer just shuts down randomly

Does anyone know why my computer would just shut down randomly? I have know idea. I ran Disk Utilities, Tech Tool and Norton and found nothing wrong. Do I need to reinstall my system again? Any help would be great.

Have a look at the logs with the Console app, located in /Applications/Utilities. Look specifically at system.log and see if there are any entries in there around the time that the computer shuts down. Look for entries with "shutdown" in them.
Oh, and what Norton product do you have? They're notorious for causing more problems than they solve.

    HAMitch,
your EtreCheck report will not reveal why your MacBook Pro shuts down randomly. What this report does reveal is that you have out-of-date versions of Java and Silverlight installed. The latest version of Java (7, Update 55) can be downloaded from here, and the latest version of Silverlight (5.1.30317.0) can be downloaded from here.
Without knowing some example situations in which your MacBook Pro randomly shuts down, it will be difficult to diagnose the problem. Would you provide some examples during which it has shut down? That is, which programs are running when it happens? How long has it been booted up when it happens? &c.
In the interim, after updating Java and Silverlight, you can try running your MacBook Pro’s Apple Hardware Test, to see if it can detect any hardware problems.

  • My iphone keeps shutting down randomly. Ever since I installed IO7

My iphone keeps shutting down randomly. 3-7 times a day. Ever since I installed IO7. How do I fix or reinstall IO6?

    Hey Kaylyn07,
Thanks for the question. The following article may help in troubleshooting Kernal Panic’s for OS X:
OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem."
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4636
In most cases, kernel panics are not caused by an issue with the Mac itself. They are usually caused by software that was installed, or a problem with connected hardware.
To help avoid kernel panics, install all available software updates until Software Update reports, "Your software is up to date." OS X updates help your Mac handle the kinds of issues that can cause kernel panics, such as malformed network packets, or third party software issues. For most kernel panics, updating your software is all you have to do.
Diagnosing a recurring kernel panic can be difficult. If you need help with this process, consider bringing your Mac to a Genius at an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for help.  If you plan to visit an Apple Retail store, you can make a reservation (available in some countries only).
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • IPod 4G keeps crashing, freezing and shutting down randomly

I think since the IOS7 update, my Ipod keeps on skipping songs, freezing on apps, crashing on apps and sometimes
shutting down randomly. I have tried deleting from multitask, and shutting down (which only works for like 10 mins).
How can I fix this? And repair is too expensive.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Internet keeps shutting down randomly

Just got my Mac Mini and love it so far, but my internet keeps shutting down randomly and restarting itself. Is there a lack of memory being used for it and is there a way to change it? If so, how much should I allow it to use?

I'm on a LAN line, no router, the School is the ISP... Haven't had this problem on my PC. I did it about 2 times in a row, but hasn't done it since.

  • Macbook keeps shutting down randomly

I've had my Macbook for about 9 months with no problems but it has suddenly started to shut down randomly. I have looked at lots of support advice on this site but nothing has worked. I have the latest firmware and battery update patches. Following advice on this forum, I thought it was down to recently installed widgets that might me using too much CPU so I binned them to no avail. It also isn't the temperature, when it last died that was at 49c, so well below danger level! From what I can ascertain, it isn't kernal panic either, and no panic logs have been stored. I haven't had any error messages. I have looked at the console and system logs, but they don't mean much to me.
    Here's what happens:
Completely randomly, regardless of what applications I have open or with no external decives attached, my mac switches off, or almost. The start up "ching" sounds, then the screen flickers on and off while the light at the front does the same, it also makes the start-up sound a few times as if it's trying to restart. It doesn't close down completely but won't come back up again. When it first started doing this, I could force it to shut down then reboot it, but just now the only way I could get it to do this was to remove all power: take out the battery and remove the power-in cable then replace the cable and reboot. It still does this with the battery removed completely, so it's not the battery causing this. I've also tried holding down the on/off button until it makes that long tone sound just to see if it would start up before removing all power, but it didn't!
Help! I've tried everything I can think of and the apple store is closed in the UK!

Ummm, nope. All due respects, this problem cropped up suddenly, at about the same time, for multiple users, on different laptop types. Probability of all this happening at once due to simultaneous hardware failures is much lower than if it was caused by say a software update not playing well with something (a piece of 3rd party software, etc). I'm having the same exact problem, I have put a new battery in, same thing happens.
This is similar to 3 or so years ago when widgets were first introduced, laptop battey lifes dropped to about 1/3 and the machines heated up. General consensus was it must be hardware, well no it was software, and a software fix took care of it. I'm hoping someone figures this out soon...
    Thanks

  • I have my macbook pro for a while now and all of sudden it just started shutting down randomly when my battery had enough life in it and only works and comes back on when I put it on the charger. Do I need to replace my battery?

    I have a MacBook Pro
Keeps completely shutting down all the time when its fully charged and at random times when it is at 65% for example
Do I need to get a battery replacement? Or do I have a virus?
    PLEASE HELP

Sudden power-down is most often caused by overheating. The fans in a Mac are controlled by software that measures temperatures at several points inside the computer, and increases the fan speeds when temperatures are rising. You should get it checked to be sure the fans  are working as expected. Your appointment for an evaluation at the genius Bar at an Apple Store is free, in warranty or out.
Battery shortage will generally cause your MacBook to warn you, then go to sleep.
Your symptoms do not correspond with any know Viruses.

  • IMac 20" shutting down randomly

    Hey folks,
My iMac has been shutting down randomly a couple of times a day. It's been happening ever since I purchased the machine (April, 2008) and more often when its warmer (I live in Los Angeles). I've taken the computer in for a check up and the Genius Bar said that they couldn't replicate the problem. They had the computer over over a week.
Now that it's getting warmer these days, I'm finding my iMac shutting down more often. Does anyone else have this problem? Any luck with the Genius Bar?
I've seen my hard drive reach 65ºC and the rest of the components in the high 50's, low 60's. As a temporary solution, I'm running smc fan control to try to keep things cool.
    Thanks!

Hi, a couple of questions -> Applecare? Have you contacted Apple Customer Relations?
I would also document everything you do from when you Start Up, times etc., Apps etc.
If you have a digital camera with movie, load it up with a large memory card & set it on a table near your computer & run it until you capture the shut down..After that Apple will take action...
Recently my 2 laptops MBPro 14mths old/MB 7 months old - Both had issues, after a few tests via AppleHelp still no joy - Apple replaced both with the latest models...
If the Genius can't help - Ask for the Manager...

  • 13" MacBook Pro (late 2012) shuts down randomly

Mac book pro 13" retina shuts down randomly and without warning. The screen goes black and it takes several minutes before it will start back up.
I've taken my mac book pro 13" retina to the genius bar, twice. The first time I was told to remove some software, which I did and the computer continues to randomly shut down. The second time I was told to make sure that I have at least 12 GB of storage available, which I made happen and the computer continues to shut down.
What I can tell you, and what I've told genius bar, is:
The shut down happens when it is either plugged in or not. The shut downs happen toward the middle of the day when the computer gets warm. It is not hot, just warm. If I keep a external fan pointed at it all day I do not get any shut downs. I've spend almost a full day at genius bar and I am looking for some help/approach/information that would help us solve this problem.
    Computer Info:
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012)
Yosemtie 10.10.1. Note I was running the latest Mavericks and had the problem too. The upgrade did not help.
    Thank you.

Their tests are superior to the AHT and so I am surprised that they did not pick up on any hardware faults.  The responses that you say they gave you are in my opinion, to be charitable, worthless.  The fact is that the quality of the technicians at a genius bar are not consistent, some being better than others.
If I were in your position, I would firmly but politely demand the the MBP be serviced so that the AHT not produce that error any more.  If need be, send the MBP to a repair facility where more experienced personnel can work on it.  If you have Apple care, there should be no charge.
    Ciao.

  • HP laptop shutting down randomly (8 month old)

HP pavilion g series, purchased new in Canada; one month in, it was constantly freezing; sent back to hp and that was fixed but came back with a new problem, random constant shutdowns; this varies, sometimes only a few times per day but sometimes constantly, every 2 minutes.  Not happy with Hp at all and if they don't fix it I will never purchase another hp product again.  I have in my house another hp laptop with no problems, two hp netbooks, an hp desktop and printer.  This doesn't seem to matter to them that they will be losing a valued customer.  Has been returned to hp for repair 6 times, going out again this week.  Trying to assess it on my own.  Tonight it isn't shutting down while using battery power, just unplugged power cord to see what happens.  It is not hot and I do hear fans and make sure that it is elevated to keep it cool.  You can't talk to anyway at hp, I want a new laptop.  They can keep it, useless to my daughter who is a university student.  She can't be doing papers etc with the computer shutting down randomly.  She will lose her work.  Thanks, so much for any input.

    Okay,
Wefinally got around to calling Costco Concierge service (should be a sticker on your laptop if you bought it there), verified that we already did everything (see first post) he was going to suggest, however,
There was just one more thing to check after all:
Reboot and hit [F2] to get into another HP Utility. There is a battery check there, and that one told us
    Primary - Replace (40)
So he had us hold while he contacted HP to begin a battery order for us - then he patched us thru to HP to complete the call. Of course, it would be free as still covered by warranty. Was painless, quick and best of all, that phone call was YESTERDAY mid-afternoon and guess what? We received the new battery before lunch today shipped from SC to ON. AWESOME!!!!!
I've had to call HP before about a mini and it was horrible foreign outsourced support - claimed to be in Canada but didn't know how to spell Ottawa or where it was...  Going thru Coscto compared to that is night & day.

  • Replaced Logic Board, RAM, and hard drive connecting wire, but Macbook Pro 15' (Mid 2010) now freezes and shuts down randomly

I have a mid 2010, Macbook Pro '15. Summer of 2012, it kept shutting down and making the three beeping noises, so I took it in for repair. I was told that my Logicboard needed to be replaced, so I replaced it, and took my Macbook abroad with me. Halfway through the summer, the three beeping noises resumed, and since I was abroad, I couldn't use my 90 day warranty and take it back for repair. By the time I returned to the US, my warranty ended, and I was told that the RAM actually needed to be replaced. So I replaced that.
In May of this year, my laptop wouldn't start and instead showed a folder with a question mark. I took it to repair and was told it was the hard drive wire that needed to be replaced, so I replaced that. Less than two weeks after, my Mac began freezing whenever I had a YouTube video or song playing- it made short, staticky sounds and then shut down. Now, it shuts down randomly even when I'm not playing videos or songs, and regardless of if it is running on battery or plugged in. Since I got my hard drive wire replaced, I've also noticed that the laptop takes an incredibly slow time to start up.
The last the Genius Bar technicians looked at my computer when replacing the harddrive wire, they hadn't said anything else was wrong with my laptop.
I've spent almost $1000 total fixing my macbook and am quite sick of going through this over and over again. Can anyone help me know what went wrong this time? (I have no apple care) Thank you in advance.

Check to see if you've any panic logs -> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2546.
If so, post the text of the latest.
