My computer kicks out blank DVD-R's

My computer is not reading blank DVD-R - kicks it out. However, it will read a blank CD and DVD's that have content on them. Is this something I can fix or do I need to bring it into Apple?

Hard to say. It could be the brand of DVD media you are using. Verbatim is first choice around here.
Or it could be a matter of cleaning the Superdrive, using a standard CD/DVD lens cleaner disk that uses tiny brushes.
Or it may indeed be a failing Superdrive (not unknown), in which you can either get it replaced or get an external DVD burner.

  • PowerMac G5 spits out blank DVD R?

I own a Dual 2.5GHz Power Mac G5 with a problem of rejecting all blank DVD+R discs but it accepts a retail DVD and a Mac OSX 10.4 DVD-DL. It sometimes rejects even a DL disc once in a while.

Old drive + old firmware + new or cheap media = incompatibility
    What is your drive?
What media are you trying to use?
Also, OS X doesn't equally support DL media.
With DL media, OS X 10.4x supports burning to DVD+R DL, but not DVD-R DL.
OS X 10.5x Leopard supports burning to DVD-R DL, but doesn't support DVD+R DL.

  • CD player kicking out CD/DVD

I am trying to get my DVD player to work... everytime I put in a DVD, it tries to read it and then kicks it out. The odd thing is that it accepts some CDs/DVDs, and not others. I desperately need to reinstall my Final Cut Pro, and the player isn't working.
    Anyone have any ideas?

even running the disk cleaner thru stopped the mechanism. It spins and spins and makes the sound like it's trying to start up... then freezes iTunes. after a very long time i can finally retrieve the disk.
    ideas?

  • Pioneer CD/DVD 103 Superdrive - spits out blank DVD

I am using Toast 7 to burn CD's and DVD's. I have no trouble burning CD's. DVD's are another story. I was only able to burn the DVD that came with the machine. The Sony DVD+R disks that I purchased will not burn - the tray opens up after 20 seconds or so.
Any suggestions? Am I purchasing the wrong type of recordable DVD?

    Hi
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
That drive (DVR-103) was only designed to burn 2X DVD media (-R format only).
You may find 4X media that the drive will still accept (it will only burn @ 1X, if at all).
Some new 16X media is rated 1-16X; check the packaging, if it does not specifically state this, then it most likely won't work. Sony (Made In Japan, not Made In Taiwan which is poor quality) 16X media is rated as such, so it may work.
You may find that it is cheaper to replace the drive for a DVR-111D or ND-3550A (under $40 online, try newegg.com as one resource), so that you can make use of most quality brands of currently available -/+R media (nd burn much faster).
If you choose to do this, you need to look at the "OEM PC" drives listed above, they ship as a bare drive, with no PC software/retail packaging; this is all you need.
There are a couple of additional things to do when installing any 3rd party drive in a Mac . You can search discussions for either model # for much more info...

  • My machine is spitting out blank dvd's?

Any idea why this would happen?

So more information might be helpful to further identify the issue(s).
1.) Are you able to read any optical media that's inserted?
2.) When did this start happening?
3.) Have you tried different media?
4.) What sort of media/manufacturer is it?
I once bought a 100 disc (CD-R) spindle of Memorex and 44 of the discs were not readable by my machine. Ironically of those 44, 29 were readable by my other Mac and 11 were only readable by my PC. The remainder were not readable on anything I tried.

  • Superdrive no longer recognises blank DVDs

Mac and Disk Utility accept MOST CDs (blank, self-burned or commercial), and accept commercial DVDs, but spins then spits out blank DVDs, and claims some CDS (burned on the same Superdrive) have zero content, though it successfully burned a cheapo CD yesterday and opens it fine today
This has come on suddenly, as everything was fine until about a fortnight ago. I've tried DVD blanks for four or five different manufacturers (including DVDs from a bargain-basement spindle which it happily burned to until this - all brands now spun then ejected.
Tried cleaning laser, repairing permissions, logouts & restarts etc. Can't find anything in these or MacFixit forums that helped.
    Any suggestions?
    TIA,
    Bill

You could try posting this in the hardware forums but I'd say your drive is ready for replacement. Is this the original drive? With the low cost (in most cases) of replacement drives these days it sometimes isn't worth a huge amount of effort working with the drive, especially since there really isn't all that much you can do. The variable nature of the issue suggests something is going in the hardware, rather than a software issue. Burned media is usually the hardest for a drive to read and that's what you're seeing.
Pioneer drives are usually compatible with Macs and have replaced many a Superdrive in the G4 forums.

  • I was writing to -R dvds fine from blank dvds purchased last year.  Inserted newer purchase -R dvds and MacPro spits out dvd.  Why won't my computer now accept -R blank dvds?

Likely either the batch of media is defective, or the drive itself is not working.
Swap for different media; for a different batch from a different vendor, and also try +R media.
The slot-loading drives on various Mac systems can and variously do fail.  If different media doesn't work, then you probably have a failed drive.
If your Mac is of same the vintage as OS X v10.4 that's listed in your footer and you're not in a position to replace or repair the optical drive in your Mac, then you might consider using an external USB CD/DVD device.  If you don't have another Mac around to perform the recording on, that is.

You may have a scratched or dirty DVD.
If it's dirty, you can clean it by wiping it radially (never circumferentially) with a soft damp cloth. Be sure it's dry before inserting.
Even a fingerprint can prevent an optical reader from accepting a DVD.
If it's scratched, there is not much you can do except get a replacement.
One possibility is to copy the DVD on a machine that does accept it. It's a Dual-Layer. You are allowed one backup.
Sometimes the copy works when the original is slightly damaged, but in your case, if your system actually ejects the DVD, it may be beyond repair.

  • Hi! I have been experiencing trouble my mac computer, it spits out CD/DVD's and there is no camera connection

Hi! I have been experiencing trouble my mac computer, it spits out CD/DVD's and there is no camera connection

My mid-2007 iMac's internal optical drive went on the fritz a few weeks ago. Symptoms were a little different (it recognized every disk, CD or DVD, as blank whether they were blank or not). Reason and solution are the same: It's a hardware problem and your choices are to get the internal replaced or repaired, or get an external FireWire or USB drive.
If you're still covered by AppleCare, your internal drive will be repaired/replaced for you at no cost. Just bring it in to your nearest Apple Store after calling for a repair appointment.
If you're not still covered by AppleCare, an internal replacement is more expensive than it's worth. I got a very inexpensive USB CD/DVD reader - less than $20, since I don't need the ability to burn very often and when I do there are plenty of other Macs around here to do the burning. If you feel confident in your ability to muck about with the cramped insides of your Mini, a replacement internal can be had for under $100.

  • My Imac G5 spits blank DVD's out...does not let me burn.

Is there an update I can perform for the DVD drive or something I can do to make this work? The computer accepts blank CD-R's and audio CD's and DVD's but I can get blank DVD's to work. The batch of DVD's is one that I have used in the past and have burned many DVD's from so I can't understand why it stops accepting these.
I also tried a different brand of DVD and it does not accept those as well. Please help. Thank you!

Your drive may need cleaning. Cleaning kits can be purchased from any store that sells CD/DVDs.
Make sure the DVDs are not dirty, scratched and/or smudged. Also make sure they are high quality.

  • Why am i kicked out of my wireless network everytime my computer sleeps or shuts down?

why am i kicked out of my wireless network every time there the machine goes to sleep or when i shut the computer off. is there a setting where i can stay logged-in to my wireless network without having to select it every time?
    Running Lion 10.7.5
    very frustrating.
i hope the solution is not to buy Mountain Lion. that would make me angry.
    thanks for your support.

Since it's a new machine, contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine. That also might apply to newly bought ones inside the first 90 days.
FWIW, IMO, the AppleCare extended plan's the cheapest insurance you can get for your new desktop machine.

  • My computer is running loudly and then kicks out when i insert a disk.

There is something wrong with my computer. It cannot run the disk. Each time when i insert a disk, it is running loudly but 45 seconds later, it kicks out. I am sure the disk has no problem. http://www.bidanswer.com/Questions/QuestionInfo_10434.html

This is not remotely a photography question.
You need to search for the site of your computer's manufacturer.

Another update to my burning problem...in my movies folder there is an img file (states it is a classic disk image-2.82GB) after I have tried burning a DVD unsuccessfully and when I open the img file I see 1) AUDIO_TS AND 2) VIDEO_TS files. I 'control' clicked the file and tried burning this folder onto a disc. Result it seemed to burn both files onto DVD but still couldn't view video.
