My computer looks alone on the local network
Hello,
Since a few days, I can't see any computer in the "Shared" section of the Finder's side bar.
Digging into that problem, I noticed I can no more connect to any of the local network computers using their name (i.e.: afp://mycomputer.local) but can well using the IP address (i.e.: afp://192.18.1.10).
Access to outside world causes no problem.
Any idea on how to solve this is welcome !
Regards,
Lionel
1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Why does the local network and computer name keep changing?
After upgrading to Yosemit the local network name and computername on my iMAC keep changes link:
Mycomputer-1
Mycomputer-2
Mycomputer-3
Why?
I have tried to change it back in sharing and network locations.
Is this also the reason the my iPhone cannot find my iPhone often cannot find my iMac when I will sync it? Then I have to restart the iPhone and iTunes on the computer. This happens very very often.
Maybe it also linked to these errors which the log is full of - many every minute:
19/10/14 12.11.09,522 discoveryd[53]: Basic DNSResolver dropping message because it doesn't match the one sent Port:0 MsgID:256

I think the is some bug/clash between bonjour and other network protocols. That is only a guess. After resetting the computer name and local host name to the correct name without the number I also shotdown my iMac, my AppleTV, my iPhone, my iPad and then rebooted my Airport/Time capsule it seemed to work at least for several days. But yesterday I discovered that my Apple TV now also has changed name to Apple TV (2).
I logged into iCloud.com to see my devices and here it was really wired. My Apple TV was called Apple TV (2) and my iMac also had (2) after the name. Then I checked it on the iMac but here it was correct! Why can it have one name on the iCloud and another on the computer.
I restarted both the iMac, Apple TV and Airport Time capsule then everything was correct also on iCloud.com.
But today the iMac was called the name (2) again on the iMac. And now the local host name also had -2 after the name. It has not always been both names that has changed. That is really wired. And today Wifi was not working on the iMac after wake from sleep. I changed the name back and rebooted again also the Airport Time capsule. Now it is working again.

The name is not the only problem. Often itunes will not find my iPhone and iPad. Then i need to close iTunes and restart the iPhone and iPad then it works for some time.
And the iPhone and AppleTV will not always wake the iMac from sleep. I am wondering if the is linked to the changing of name.
I have seen by googling that it can be related to a sleep proxy problem so it seems like that here is two devices on the net with the same name that is why name is changing, but to know this do not help me to solve the problem. I have also seen all the suggestion to turn almost every services off on the computer, but again I it is not a solution and I have the iMac and devises to use the functionality not to shot everything down. So I do not really understand people saying turn off itunes, turn off blueboth, and turn off this and that.
Apple must soon come with a real solution. We are really many people have these problem since we upgraded to Yosemite and iOS 8.
I have also listed some of the iTunes errors from the log below:

Unable to share files over the local network, OS X Lion
About two weeks ago, my coworker and I realized that we were no longer able to share files over the local network. We have not made any changes to our preference settings. We are able to access FileMaker Pro databases files located on another computer in our office via the network, but we are unable to access any other files by trying to login to the computer remotely. We also have internet access. I am able to login to each of our work computers form home, but not from the office. I'm am not sure what has changed, but it is important that we have the ability to share files at work. Can you give me directions on how to fix our problem. Thanks!
Debbie Roberts
Univesrity of Texas at AustinI had this problem when I first setup my Mac. One thing I know is that File Sharing in System Preferences doesn't necessarily need to be on, because iTunes does all of the networking itself.
I know that you've checked and checked again on the firewall, but what I did was turn the firewall on. In the list of ALLOW, there should be a line that is labeled iTunes Music Sharing. Check it. It was the magic link, and all of my iTunes libraries on the three computers in the house (two Windows, one my Mac) could "see" each other.
Turning on the firewall might seem strange, but it worked for me.
I hope this helps.

How to send a file to a certain printer at the local network?
Hello,
Is there any Java API (standard or free packages) that allows to send a certain file from the filesystem to a certain printer at the local network, not necessarily the default one that the machine the code is running on is using? In case there is one, a code example could be nice...Hi Roy,
There is a library part of the standard java for printing and searching printers. Have a look at the package
javax.print
A google search with the package name will lead to tutorials and code samples I guess.

Iphoto does not allow to share events on the local network
Hello,
I was trying to share the iphoto library on the local network and it seems to be that I only can share albums, but not events.
The help on sharing says:
"Select the “Share my photos” checkbox, and then choose your entire library or only the Events,
folders, albums, slideshows, books, calendars, or cards that you want to share."
According to this I should be able to share events, but I'm not. Events don't even appear in the list of possible shares. The list itself says "Share selected albums".
So is there a way to share events?
If not then it looks like a bug to me. Basically to share the events I would need to create an album for each event.
ThanksIt's a bug or an optimistic writer of Help files...
It's very easy to make an album from an Event: Simply drag the Event to the Albums section of the Source Pane - result an Album of the same name. As Albums simply reference files on the HD (unlike Events) you use no extra disk space, plus the options for sorting and arranging the photos are enhanced.

How do i go beyond the local network?
hey, i'm making a mini chatserver thing, and i've gotten it to work on the local network, but i was wondering if i could extend it to beyond the local network. is it possible to do this with j2se?
Hey, i looked online at stuff, and i saw that because
computers that i use use a private ip, i need to mess
with some NAT and subnet mask thing to get it to
work. can someone point me on someway i can do the
whole private to public ip thing with the NAT stuff?
(maybe i have it backwards).I already told you, you MUST have a public IP.
What you read above is referring when YOU control the routers and network. Then your network cloud HAS a public IP. So you can set up forwarding so that it works.
Do you control the network at your school? Does your school even have a public IP?
Do you have a public IP at home on the router that connects to your broadband ISP? -
Access to the local network of my company.
Dear Mac users,
I was wanted to access to the local network and drives of my office, on Windows it was easy for me, plug the cable, press run on start menu then tape the name of the drive (ex: \\dc4). But now on my brand new Mac I can't find how to do that. If anyone can help me please.
Thanks & regards.

Can you access the Internet from your Mac? If not, that's the first thing you need to make work.
If you can, in the Finder pull down the "Go" menu and select "Network". Do you see anything familiar in the resulting window?
There's also a chance that your office network servers haven't installed or activated "services for Macintosh" or whatever it's called these days. (I've been away from Windows networking for a while.) -
I live in Saudi Arabia and intend to buy an iPhone 5 (unlocked version) from U.K. I want to know, would it be possible to claim warranty from the local network operator which is the official Apple iPhone seller i.e. Mobily. Would they repair/replace my iPhone 5 ?
You would need to return to U.K. for warranty service. The iPhone warranty is not international.

Dear all,
If my server is enabled for the remote desktop connection, then the users on the local network can access my server IIS services by entering the IP address of my server in the IE (http/https) on the local network only.
I went to control panel>>system>>Allow Remote desktop Connection>>with network level authentication.
Now If my team wants to access this server not by opening the Remote Desktop Connection, rather by entering the IP address of my server on the IE and access the resources offered.
Is it possible by this way,
Or is there any other method to do so.
Regards,
Ahmed3. My web Developer is installing an application on the server for our department team. To test this application running, he wants to access this application through the local machine from browser (rather than logging in through the remote desktop connection).
4. He wants this application to run on the local network only.
5. He wants me to do some setup, that he must be able to enter the IP address of the server in the browsers address bar on his local machine and test the functionality of his application on the local network.
If this is the requirements of the developer, I guess he wants you to configure IIS.
You can do a test, whether IIS is working properly.
Log on to server, enter https://localhost or http://IP_address_of_the_server don't know whether some ports are configured in order for your IIS to work.

Help me to Access a File in the Local Network
Hi everybody,
I'm new to this field.
I want to access a file in a machine on the local network from other machines.
can anybody please give me a simple code for this.
(actually I'm very little aware of this field)
Thank You.Duminda_Dharmakeerthi wrote:

If you want to access a file on another machine, there are many different ways to do it. All of them require that the other machine be running some kind of service, and that your client machine knows what that service is and how to use it, and most also require your client to authenticate itself.
You could mount a remote drive with Samba or NFS or Windows' file sharing.
You could use FTP.
You could use SCP.
You could use HTTP.
You could develop your own custom file sharing protocol.
You could use some other option not mentioned here. -

I would like to create my own Wi-Fi standalone network at an upcoming tradeshow where there will be NO internet access.
Currently, I run and develop sites on my iMac use MAMP to manage my sites locally. Using MAMP, I run my sites as though they are on the internet although everything is local.
I purchased an Airport Express hoping I could create a standalone network so that the iMac would broadcast its website to whatever device connects to it such as my iPhone, iPad and MacBookPro.
However, after setting up the network successfully (I have a green light on the Airport Express, and there is NO internet going through it), I am not able to go any further by logging into the iMac's websites from the other machines. Form my MacBookPro Finder, I can look at files and folders using afp://10.0.1.2, from the Find/Go/Connect to Server utility, but I can't browse the website that is running on the iMac via the Safari browser.
Can anyone help me configure my MacBookPro (or iPad, or iPhone) to run the website on the iMac when they are all on the same network?
Thanks so much!!1) connecting the TC using a ethernet cable from one of the two modem's LAN ports to the TC's WAN port
2) create a new Wi-Fi network using the TC ?
Does someone already create a new Wi-Fi network using its TC connected by Ethernet on a modem/router device ? How do you set up the DHCP (and NAT) ? Which range did you use ?
This is easy enough to do..
Plug the TC directly into a computer.. without other connections to do the setup.
Using the newly installed 5.6 utility.
Bridge the TC.
Create a wireless network.
This is an older screen shot and I would set security to WPA2 Personal only not WPA/WPA2 Personal as shown above.
I do recommend you use wireless names that are short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
Update the TC..
Now plug it into the modem router.. it will be a part of the network without doing NAT and DHCP itself.. which you do not want.. that leads to double NAT issues.. but it is a WAP that provides access to devices on both 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands directly to the main router. -
Accessing public folders in the local network
I work with 8 other mac users and we all share files using our Public folders via local network. This is how we typically would access each other's Public folder: open a Finder window, choose Network, then choose the name of the mac that we want to connect to. Then, connect as "Guest". We are all on OS X Tiger.
Recently, one of us upgraded to the OS X Snow Leopard, and we couldn't access her Public folder since the switch. We believe she is on the network, because she has been printing to the network printer and can connect to all of our Public folders. I tried to follow this instruction from Apple Support page to set up file-sharing on her iMac (with Snow Leopard):
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/17131.html
I hit a snag at #4 (bullet #2), because I couldn't find "network users" to add to the users list. When the rest of us try to connect to her computer, this is the message that we got:
The alias "Stacey's computer (3)" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found."
Can someone help me with this problem? I have browsed the Discussions and Forums and didn't see anything that was helpful. Thanks!HI,
The Snow Leopard user... have her repair disk permissions and see if that helps...
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
Carolyn
