My computer refuses to access almost any website with a .gov ending?

I have been trying to access numerous government websites for a research project, and my computer will not load almost any website with a .gov ending. Although it will access things like the NIH, the FBI and the CDC, it refuses to acces some of the other main government sites, like the Department of Justice, the Department of Education or other departmental sites. I just tried to load the site on another computer, and it worked. Any ideas what I could do to fix this?

I need to access a website with a URL ending on .exe - Internet Explorer does not have any issues but with Firefox I only get the "file download" dialog box. Is there a setting where I can prevent this behaviour?

I also have the same problem, however if I use Firefox or Opera sites with ssl connection work fine. Still, I can't use Google Chrome (ssl), Safari (ssl), the Mac app store (generally), or the iTunes store (generally). Both the iTunes store, Safari and the app store won't respond, and Chrome displays this error: (net::ERR_TIMED_OUT). The problem persists regardless of what network I'm using. Also, when trying to access the keychain or iCloud, the process will not start (will hang). I didn't have these problems at all before updating to 10.7.2.
Sometimes rebooting helps, and sometimes not. If the problem disappears by rebooting, then it only lasts a few minutes before it reappears. It is very frustrating, especially since there doesn't seem to be any obvious or consistent way of which to fix it.
I'm also using a Macbook Pro 13-inch mid 2010.

I tried to open Firefox this morning and got a message saying that the installation was malformed (huh?!?!?!?). It opens but refuses to go to any website, it won't open any of my bookmarks, and it won't allow me to refresh or do ANYTHING AT ALL. I am running Mac OS 10.4.11 and I have ordered Snow Leopard but it hasn't arrived. Meanwhile, I'm unable to upgrade Firefox until Snow Leopard arrives...is there ANYTHING I can do to get my Firefox back in the meantime? Help.....!

Not seen that message before, but two standard suggestions that may help.

Sometimes ADE gets its registration/activation confused and in a semi-authorized state.
Uninstalling and reinstalling does not help.
Unfortunately, it often then gives misleading error messages about what is wrong.
A common incorrect message informs you that the ID is already in use on another computer and cannot be reused.
This can often be resolved by completely removing any authorization using ctrl-shift-D to the Library screen on ADE (cmd-shift-D if on Mac).
Restart ADE, and then reauthorize with your (old) Adobe ID.
In extreme cases on the mac, the following extra step has helped some people. Navigate to /Users//Library/Application Support/Adobe/Digital Editions and drag the activation.dat file to the trash. There are lots of bugs in ADE2.0 (and 2.0.1). Try replacing ADE2.0 with the older but more reliable v1.7.2.
(You can have them both installed at once if you like.)
Version 1.7.2, it is a little difficult to find, available on Adobe site for Windows and for Mac.

Some people have found ADE trying to upgrade automatically.
It appears (not 100% sure) that if you install ADE2.0 as a new install (not as an upgrade) that your 1.7.2 will continue to run.
Probably best to say no if 2.0.x installation asks if you want to migrate your library.

Safari crashes when opening almost any website

Safari is being very unstable after the Mac OS X 10.4.9 update. It crashes when I try to open any website that involves logging in (like apple, my cell phone company, facebook, ect.) I tried reinstalling with the combo update this time. No change. I tried repairing disk permissions, with similiar results. Now, iTunes also frequently crashes it's self whenever it starts up, it tries to determine gapless song volume, and will work on a song indefinetly, I've tried removing the song in case it's corrupted, no change, im posting this under safari because I have no clue if these 2 problems are related. For iTunes I deleted the library files and re-imported the library to no avail (as suggested by people with similiar problems with itunes stability. Also, when I try to verify disk (with disk utility) it states that: the underlying task reported failure on exit, and: Volume header needs minor repair. However im not a real techie person so I have no clue if this is relevant to either issue (i've been told that it isn't)

If you are seeing Directory problems, then you'll need to start-up from your Installer DVD, running Disk Utility to repair any minor damage.
To do so, insert the DVD into the computer. When fully loaded, restart the computer. Hold down the "C" key when the screen goes dark. Continue holding it until the grey screen with the Apple Logo appears. Once the Installer is fully loaded, go to the Utilities menu>Disk Utility. Once open, single-click on your HD on the left. On the right select "repair disk". If errors appear, rerun until you get a clean pass. Once completed restart the computer.
If crashes persist, I suggest reapplying the 10.4.9 combo update. Do not use the computer while the update is running. Once the install/restart is complete, log-on to your User Account. Then "repair permissions" using Disk Utiity in your Utilities folder.

The key to what you seem to want to do is to be able to get Apple's Time Capsule router to "join" the network that your Conceptronic router. I believe that works with some third-party routers, but I've never seen a list of those that work in such a configuration and I have no experience with Conceptronic equipment.
You might be better off with a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device instead of a Time Capsule.

As above. What can I say-I have tried everything listed on the support forum website. I had no problem accessing this secure website, which is my work email, before I upgraded to Firefox 4.0. I would prefer not have to go back to the previous version if possible. I don't like IE because it is just too slow, but right now I have to use it to access this website. I have windows firewall and have allowed firefox.exe as an exception. Any suggestions as this is very frustrating. Thanks

You should be able to use the OpenVPN Connect app running on your iPad to connect your iPad to the VPN directly. It is an official OpenVPN client for iOS devices.
In what way is it "not compatible"? Have you tried it? Tunnelblick is an OpenVPN client, so your school's VPN is using the OpenVPN protocol. That means any OpenVPN client should be able to access it. (It is possible, but unlikely, that your school uses encryption that is not available on the iPad, but that would be very unusual.)
Otherwise, a remote control app on your iPad would let you control your Mac at home. "Back to My Mac", for example, would allow you to control your Mac remotely. The tricky part of this is that usually a VPN is set up to send all Internet traffic via the VPN server, and I'm not sure how that would work with "Back to My Mac".

On a Mac (10.6.4), Firefox asks to download/save any websites with an .asp extension. How do I get these sites to display properly?

Any website that uses the .asp suffix will not open within the browser. Instead, firefox asks to download the website. If I choose to open the .asp file with firefox in the download prompt, I end up in a loop of asking to download/open. The asp websites work fine in Safari.

Hi, I have a prblem, that I can not login anymore to any websites (such as facebook, apple, yahoo ...) using Safari version 5.1.9, how I could solve this problem, because when you are trying to login it just reloads and asks again to type the username and pasword.

Are you using a third party password manager?
And try this ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type of copy paste the following:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

Any website with anything to do with Facebook is re-directing to Myspace

I've had this issue before and it does go stop eventually, but for a while facebook re-directs to myspace and any site with a facebook link re-directs to a 404-myspace error. Is this something wrong with me or something wrong with firefox?

Websites with # at the end

I've noticed that none of my browsers open any websites which have a "internal" pop up in them, like websites which have a # at the end. I know there is something wrong with the settings on my laptop because when I tried it on my sister's MacBook Pro they work perfectly fine.

if you transferred all of your data from your old MacBook Pro to your current MacBook Pro, and your old MacBook Pro had the same problems, then that could suggest that if there were problems with the browsers’ property list files on your old MacBook Pro, that they were also transferred to your current MacBook Pro.
As an experiment to see if a cloned property file could be the culprit, try this:
1. Exit Safari.
2. Open Terminal (it’s in the Utilities subfolder of the Applications folder) and run the following command:
mv ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist ~/Desktop
Keep Terminal open.
3. Open Safari again, and make sure that the “Block pop-up windows” checkbox in Safari’s preferences is not checked.
4. Go to a site where a pop-up window has appeared in your sister’s browser, but hasn’t appeared in yours. Does a pop-up window appear in your Safari now? If yes, go to Step 5A. If no, go to Step 5B.
5A. If it appears now, delete the old com.apple.Safari.plist file on your desktop, and change the rest of Safari’s preferences to your liking. Skip Step 5B and go to Step 6.
5B. If it still doesn’t appear, exit Safari and then run the following commands in Terminal:
rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
mv ~/Desktop/com.apple.Safari.plist ~/Library/Preferences
6. Exit Terminal.

I do not recommend bookmarking any financial web sites. Manually type the address carefully is the best security practice. Never store passwords on your system unless they are encrypted with a strong password. Or you are telling the "bad guys" way too much if your system becomes compromised.

Check your security software settings, you may be blocking at that level, firewall and FF add-ons.

Can't access secure college website with 3.11 previously OK

I've been logging on as a visitor, once a week, to the Mount Holyoke College website for over a year without problem, but once I upgraded to Safari 3.11, I now receive a new warning, ""Can't detect hardware" which I've never seen before. Once I go through their registration process, I still get the same warning, and can't access anything on the Internet EXCEPT the APPLE.COM website. Is that weird or what? Nothing else has changed recently on my PowerBook except Safari (and other recommended Apple Software Update suggestions.) Last week I brought in a PC laptop/Vista, and logged on just fine. ;>) Their IT people claim it's a Safari/hardware problem.
How can I downgrade to the previous version of Safari, which worked just fine for me?

normal traffic uses http on port 80 by default
encrypted traffic using https is on port 443 by default
there are some sites that use different ports, but if you open 443 it should be ok for most
if you enable "personal web sharing" on the firewall tab it'll open those ports
non-default port numbers can be seen in the url, for instance...

Whenever i open any website with fire fox from my laptop,the website will open without images and graphics.what do i do?

I'm having this issue too. But no matter what I do, it doesnt seem to be fixed. The images aren't showing up on my Facebook, but its only the profile pictures. I can turn off my computer, and load it up again, but they still won't show up. And the images show up on other computers and on my phone but they won't show up on my computer. And I can't figure out how to fix it.
If anyone knows how to fix this, Please help. I wan't to see my friends profile pictures again. Please, Please, Please.... Please!! Help!
