  • Macbook pro fan making loud noises and going really fast. Now the fan doesn't work at all and my computer gets extremely hot almost instantly. Is there a way to fix it without having to pay a ton of money to have someone fix it for me?

I've had my Macbook pro for about 3 1/2 years now. It has worked great until recently. A few months ago I noticed that the fan would always run really fast when I was doing simple tasks. After a few weeks/months, the fan was still really fast but it also started to make these loud noises. Now, it only occasionally makes the loud noise if I move my computer after its been stationary for a while. The fan no longer works at all and my computer gets exceptionally hot almost instantly when I turn it on. Is there a way to fix this problem without having to pay a ton of money to have someone fix it for me?

You can try a SMC reset:

I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. the same thing happens when just trying to save my pictures from iphoto to a flash drive. suggestions to complete backup please?

Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first.

  • Equium P200-1ED - Fan making considerable noise

I have had laptop approx 17 months with no issues but last week noticed what I think was the fan making considerable noise - as if the bearings have gone or the fan has been damaged and is now clipping something? A bit like a car - I know the noise was not therebefore and this worries me.
This noise is intermittent, more often at start-up and far less frequent when laptop is in power saving mode (which makes me confident it is the fan??).
Is this a common fault? Should I be too concerned -i .e. can ignoring it lead to something more serious? And how do I resolve?
The fan appears completely unobstructed and the vents are clear as far as I can tell but I have not taken the laptop apart. If it is the bearings, one would suspect this is a known problem??
    Thanks,
    Mathew

    Hello
I think its not easy so say what the reason is for this but in my opinion something is blocking the fan.
In your case I would try to clean the notebook using compressed air spray. This could blow out the dust from the cooling ventilators. You can buy it from a local computer store and its easy to use because therefore you must not disassemble the notebook.
    Its worth a try! ;)
I doubt that this is a common fault. In the forum I cant find may threads about this.

  • Macbook making loud noises

Hi, I have an old white macbook.
Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 and its suddenly making loud fan noises.
Does anyone know how to fix it?
    Please do help, thanks

Thinking about thus some more......are you talking about the fan running or sounding like it's hitting something? If it's just running loud try resetting the SMC http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
    Remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Macbook Pro 15" right fan making strange noise

I have a mid 2012 15" Retina MacBook Pro, 2.3 Ghz with 8 GB of RAM running 10.9.4.  About 3 days ago it fell on to tile floor from about 10 inches off the ground and hit the floor at a 45 degree angle.  There was no damage except for a small scratch near and under the charging port.  Everything was working perfectly until a day ago when I noticed the right fan was making a strange high pitched humming noise.  It's very quiet, I can only hear it when there's no other noise but it is extremely irritating when I can hear it.  Other than the noise the fan works fine, it speeds up when when the computer gets hot, and in Temperature Monitor nothing gets hotter than it should be.  The computer works completely fine, but I'm wondering what could be making the noise.  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • IMac won't start and making loud noises

When I start my iMac, the fan makes a really loud noise, it goes onto a grey screen showing a folder and a flashing question mark and face. My mac is a few years old and has lines going down the screen. Wondered if there was anything I could do to save it?

Before hauling a heavy computer to an Apple store, make sure you know how old it is, or the exact model. Apple only works on computers made in roughly the last five years, and the iMacs in this forum--G3, G4, and G5 models-- were all made prior to 2006. The description of the vertical lines sounds like a G5.

  • Macbook Pro making loud noise

Hi, I am writing because I recently purchased (not really about two months ago) purchased a Macbook Pro. Now I have had this problem since the week after I bought my computer. I never brought it in because, well it was a present from my father and it seemed kind of like, I felt like scared because since it did cost 2,000$ I was scared to tell him. (I am younger than 16, so I have grounds to be scared.) So the problem is there is a loud noise that sounds like a messed up fan, but its sadly not, it comes from the top left of my computer. Next to the speaker spot, I don't even use my computer. It's like Manufacture settings because since it was broken I never wished to use it. So basically the noise is to the point where I would rather keep the computer off than turn it on. Now I am willing to do anything to get it fixed. I just wish I could use it without having to hear this noise.

If it's a manufacturer defect, it's covered. If it was caused by damage/mistreatment, then no. The fans should be quiet (and the cool the chips, mainly)...during heavy CPU activity you may hear them, but the sound should not be loud, and you'll mostly hear the moving air. I'd recommend taking it in.

  • Any way to stop new MacBook Pro hard disk from making loud noise??

I received a brand new MacBook Pro today, and I thought everything was fine. However, when I went to use it in a very quiet room late at night, I noticed an almost unbearable noise coming from the right side of the trackpad. From reading previous discussions, I realize that it is likely the hard disk which is making the noise, and a design flaw makes the noise seem louder.
For other people who have the same problem, is there anything that can be done to make the noise go away?

You can return it for a replacement within 14 days of purchase.

  • G5 fans running and making loud noise before crashing

I was out of town so this description was second hand but the computer has been running a little weird for a while. When I have too many apps open or on a website that has a lot going on...the computer starts revving up until I quit out of everything and let it slow down. I guess while I was gone, this happened but nobody quit out the apps and it eventually turned the screen black. When I tried restarting it sounds like the computer is working but the screen is black so I can't see if it is booting up or not. I took the monitor into the apple store yesterday and it started up right away for them. It's a cinema 23" I think. Anyway, I will take the computer in today but was wondering if there was any thoughts on what might be the problem or anything else I should try before going in. Just hoping and praying I haven't lost any data. Thanks for your time and help!

Try a Safe Mode boot. Hold Shift while starting.
If you get to your desktop, it may be that the graphics card is bad. Safe mode unloads graphics drivers, so the display can work without stressing the graphics card.
As an added benefit, Safe mode forces repairs to the hard drive directory, should the issue lie there.
If you get to the desktop in Safe mode, but a subsequent normal boot shows a black screen again, you will then want to test the machine using the Apple Hardware Test that is on the original OS software discs. This can help pinpoint hardware issues.

  • IMac G5 DVD/CD making loud noise

My DVD/CD player on my iMac G5 is making a fairly loud rumbling noise from time to time. Some CD`s are fine while others create like a vibrating noise on and off. An appropriate way to describe is that it sound like a loud  shiatsu massaging cushion.  Any ideas as to what might be causing this or better yet any ideas on how I can fix it.
    Thanks.

If the problem is a hardware problem, you'll probably need to replace the drive.
Most discs do not have an adhesive label.  If it does, you or someone probably stuck it on there manually.  If there's an adhesive label on it, I would just remove it and use an appropriate marker pen to label the disc.
You can buy external optical drives from vendors like OWC.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/
Your iMac G5 has USB 2.0 and FireWire, so you should be able to connect it either way, but since it's PowerPC, if you want it to be bootable, you should use FireWire.
