My computer sleeps, but doesn't

When I close my laptop, the computer seems to go to sleep: the hard drive winds down and the light begins to pulse. But the console log suggests otherwise. Any thoughts? I have unchecked "wake for network access," have Bluetooth turned off, and nothing in the USB ports.

I fixed the problem. When I was trying to clean the connector of the iPhone I must have bent some pins. I have straightened them to the best of my ability and now it syncs. If your iPhone charges, but doesn't sync, most likely you have a similar problem, because the iPhone doesn't need all of its pins to charge, but it does need all of them to sync.

  • My computer sleeps and doesn't wake up

Battery might have run down, but even when plugged into AC, computer won't start up. It appears to be sleeping, but won't wake up even though I'm giving it juice.

I have the same computer, and probably the same problem. I never had any problem with sleeping and waking until one day when I closed and then opened and then closed the computer lid all in about a second. From then on, if I ever did a sleep by either closing the lid or selecting "sleep" from the Apple pull-down menu, the chance that it would wake up was about 1 in 10. The rest of the time, the disk would spin up but the screen was dark. There was nothing I could do except hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then restart. This was exceedingly annoying, as quickly sleeping the computer with all of my applications up is one of the best things about the laptop.
I got on the Apple phone support line and they told me to do an "archive and install" with my original disks, but it didn't help, so the expert I finally got on the line said that it was probably a bad switch in my lid and to take it into my nearest Apple service centre. This I was loathe to do, because the most convenient one is run by the biggest bunch of jerks, so I put up with having to "Shut Down..." from the Apple menu and then restarting for a few months until I had time to take it to another place which is less convenient.
However, recently I bought Leopard and did an install. Presto, my problem disappeared! It looked like a file was corrupted and was not fixed with "archive and install", but was with a new OS. I wish I knew what file that was.
I should say that I also disabled the "safe sleep" option, which was mentioned as a potential problem when I was researching earlier. I greatly prefer having no safe sleep, because sleep now takes 2 seconds instead of almost a minute.

  • Computer goes to Sleep, but doesn't wakeup

    Hello,
I just completed a build per below, and mostly issues have been resolved.   two nagging issue remains:   my computer goes into "sleep" mode overnight and it doesn't wakeup in the morning; I have to cut power and restart.    If I test immediately after placing computer in sleep mode, I can resurrect the computer normally.   But if I wait overnight, computer doesn't respond and my only recourse is to cut power and restart.
I am using a wireless keyboard, but even with a USB keyboard I have the same issue.    Comments appreciated.
    ACPI = Enabled
    ACPI Suspend = S1(POS)
Video off in suspend = yes
    Suspend time = Disabled
    Wakeup Event = Default
A 2nd issue involes the wireless keyboard.    On boot, computer stops and notes "No keyboard attached."   It is correctly cataloging an error since the driver isn't yet loaded, right?   I am dead in water at that point.  The only option is to set the BIOS so that it doesn't "Halt on keyboard error", right?  This way it will continue to boot, load the driver, and I should be OK?    Is this the mechamism that is normally used with a wireless keyboard/mouse?   Thx.
    Scott
PS  I just flashed bios to version 7.5; I presume problem will still exist with this version, but haven't verified.

Try enabling "USB legacy support" in bios for this one.

  • X220 Appears to Sleep But Doesn't

All, first I tried to get it to sleep in this thread.  I had that working for about a month just fine.  Then I noticed that about half the times I pull it out of my bag it is on fire, the fan is running and the battery is dead or just about dead.  Clearly it is not sleeping correctly.
Either closing the lid of selecting sleep from the start menu does turn off the screen the way it should and it appears to sleep.  But most of the time the fan doesn't actually turn off (I have to hold the corner up to ear to hear/feel the hot air) and I guess its not really sleeping.
Im not sure what to try to do to troubleshoot this.  I know I really don't want to have to shut down every time I need to close the lid.
    Anyone have any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance.

Guys, the EPIC FAILURE was on me and boy do I feel like a dope.  Sure enough, my never used wireless mouse was turned on inside the bottom of my bag.  I got my 5 year old to confess to messing around in my bag which must have turned it off.
Seems like Sleep is now working again.
Thanks for the help and sorry for the wasted bandwidth.

  • Display sleeps but doesn't wake on click or tab

    Hi,
I have a Mac Mini(mid 2011) with came with Lion. I just upgraded to 10.7.2 and since then there is an issue with the sleep function.
I have not put the mini to sleeep as i keep downloading large files or converting movies but the DISPLAY is set to sleep in 10 mins.
IT was all fine but ever since the update, the display doesn't wake up once it goes to sleep. Even though i click the mouse or press keys on keyboard.
A black screen prevails on the screen and the viable option left is to cut the power off and restart to access the screen. It is seriously hampering my ongoing tasks as they are closed abruptly.
For the time being i have set the display to never sleep. But i am looking for a solution.  Has anyone else also faced the issue after an the update. Any suggesstions would be highly appreciated.

  • Mac Os x 10.5.5 will sleep but doesn't like to wake up. Help please.

Whenever my macbook goes to sleep I need to do a hard shutdown after because an error message comes up telling me I need to restart it in about six languages. After I do so I get another message saying Mac Os x quit unexpectadly. I have the option to ignore or report. I have read on other threads about how you have to wait to close the screen and all that. I've tried.
Mine gets into this situation if i click the apple and then click sleep and then leave it sitting just as it was when i was using it. When I come back I need to do a hard shutdown. How do i resolve this? It is also still under warranty.

Thank you for the responses. I have tried to get the update multiple times, but when it finishes downloading and begins the install the progress bar gets stuck about a quarter of an inch into it and my macbook will sit like that for days. I gave up hope for it.
I will try running the install discs to clear the errors.
I just bought my macbook in august of 2008 and I've already run into this problem and I have totally given up hope for my firewire port.
Do either of you happen to know anyone or had problems with your/their mac's this soon?
And how do i get in touch with Apple by phone without paying for the call? I'm not one for paying alot of money and getting screwed on it so I would like to talk to them.

  • Computer starts but doesn'tt go past progress bar

As the title says. Heres the story: the day before it broke, i was watching the simspons for several days. No internet activity whatsoever. After shutting down simpsons, computer died. Then couple days after it died, i replugged it and worked just fine. I thought i would shut it completely down to kind of refresh everything and on reboot was that creepy white screen with progress bar. Once progress bar is done it shuts off. Doesnt go past.
When i start+option key, I was able to get the disk utility. Scan says all files are ok. Then i went to re-install mavericks.
Cant re-install is says my hard drive is locked.
The guy on the phone mentioned a hard drive failure.
Im a noob with macs i dont know sh-t.
I want to know alternatives to getting a costly diagnostic+semi costly new hard drive.

I believe it is enabled. Now it says rhis when i try to repair the 500gb Toshiba thing:
"The partition map needs to he repaired because there's a problem with the EFI system partition's file system"
What is efi or a partition map?

Okay, I seem to have solved the problem I posted about earlier.  I noticed that the language preference in the upper right hand corner of the screen (between the date and time and the Spotlight icon) had somehow gotten switched from American English to French.  When I switched it back to American English, my password worked when waking the computer from sleep mode.  I have no idea why changing the language preference would affect the way the password works but that seems to have been the case.  I'll post again if I experience more problems.

  • When I connect my iPad to my windows 7 computer it syncs alright but doesn't charge. Has anybody have any answers. Thanks.

Hi can someone please let me know why my ipad2 syncs but doesn't charge. I'm using windows 7.

The quickest way to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter. When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge, but only when it's in sleep mode. Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes.

  • My iPhone 3G charges with a charger, but not when connected via USB to my computer and iTunes doesn't recognize it.

Hello, my iPhone charges when I charge it with the wall plug but not when connected to a computer via USB and my iTunes doesn't recognize my iPhone either. iTunes recognizes my iPod and iPad just fine. I have been to Apple iPhone support page and I have restarted my iPhone, the computer, tried different USB ports, etc. I have also tried my iPhone on different macs even with different versions of iTunes and no luck. This all started when I was cleaning out some lint from the usb connector, could I have damaged some part of the docking connection? But why does it charge with a wall plug then?

I fixed the problem. When I was trying to clean the connector of the iPhone I must have bent some pins. I have straightened them to the best of my ability and now it syncs. I removed from my computer macbook, mac app store, and now I want to reinstall with "software update" but doesn´t appareance

Hola, buen dia, Ignacio. Saludos desde México.
    To get the Mac App Store back you will need to manually download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.7 Update Combo;
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1361
It is safe to install this over your current installation of 10.6.7. It will reinstall the Mac App Store, as well as fill in any gaps that your installation my have. It is a common troubleshooting step.

Since I upgraded to Maverick when computer sleeps it will not wake up but must be restarted?  Also password to icloud is never saved?

I read someone said you can tap on "other" when selecting which wifi you connect to and then entering the exact wifi name of the network you wish to join and the password and then joining that network allowed the password to be saved.  Also with iOS 6 the minimum length of the password needs to be 8 characters.  Maybe you password on your router is less than 8 characters long
