My computer sounds like a 747 about to take flight

hello, i have a macosx 10.4, after i give my name and pass word my computer literally sounds like an airplane and gets stuck on the grey screen with the spinning wheel, it feels like forever.might have something to do with; all of the sudden at login in it reads safe boot. (i have no clue why) and i recently up graded to 10.4.9??? PLEASE HELP
  Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Did you hold the Shift key down, accidentally or intentionally, during the boot? That'll cause a "safe boot", will be slow, and may cause the fans to run at 100%.
If you have problems, a good first thing to try is to boot from the Mac OS X Install DVD and run Disk Utility to "repair permissions" and "verify disk".

  • Hard drive sounds like it's about to take flight...won't boot at all.

Got one for ya. I just updated my G4 to 10.4.7 and now when I boot:
    1) Button lights up
    2) Hard drive sounds like a teen driving a Ferrari to prom in first gear.
    - that's it. No screen, mouse, keyboard, start-up noise ( I so miss that wonderful "BONG!" noise, now. ) Nothing.
I am old-school PC newB by MAC so be patient w/me.
PS. how do you open the optical drive with no power to the keyboard?

  • My apple computer sounds like it's about to break, are these warning signs?

this does not happen all the time but it does happen once in a blue. Sometimes when i put my computer in sleep mood the computer fan seems to be getting lounder along with some other random noise. Sounds like a airplane about to take off.
It's like a build up noise or something. What causes this weird noise and should i be worried?

Relax, Ken. Nobody's wishing any ill will toward $tash. Simply having a good chuckle at his use of the word RAMs, that's all. As far as this board being communal, I'd have to disagree that it has taken a downturn. If anything, things are much more unified here lately than I've ever seen them before - and that's a good thing.
As for the World Cup, yeah, America stinks at soccer. What a revelation!! No surprise that one of the worst teams on the planet falls to the #2 ranked team in the world, at least not to me.
LPG, test your RAM(s) using the Apple Hardware Test disc that came with your machine! If you do a search in the support section of the site for Apple Hardware Test, you'll get step by step instructions if needed!

take it back asap.  If it wasn't doing it before they cleaned the fans, they may have accidentally done something that is causing this behavior.

  • After installation it sounds like a 747 taking off.

    Hello,
After I installed Leopard on a dual partitioned hard drive (the other partition has 10.4.9 and FCStudio 1)and Final Cut Studio 2, I then rebooted the computer. It never booted up, but it did sound like a 747 taking off. Only after a few minutes did I have to force a shutdown to end this noise and power. What is going on here and what am I missing? Does it have to do with installing Leopard on a partitioned drive or installing Final Cut Studio 2 on the Leopard side of the partitioned drive? Your help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jordan

I have a dual G5 and that sound you hear always happens when the computer first starts up but quickly stops as soon as an OS is booted, I believe it is all the fans running full tilt. However, in your case, something happened and your system cannot find an OS and therefore that loud roar continues for a long time.
The noise is normal - the fact that it keeps going is not normal but related to a failed install or at least the inability of your system to boot into an OS.
Start it up and hold down the Option key and you should get a screen with all the bootable partitions showing. You should at least see your Tiger OS.
You may have to reinstall or repair the Leopard partition but the Tiger should still be working.

  • My MacBook Pro is stuck on the loading screen and sounds as if its about the take off?!

Hi everyone. About 3 hours ago my laptop suddenly became very unresponsive and began freezing a lot. I cleared the cookies on Firefox, but the problem carried on so I tried rebooting. Now it has been stuck on the loading screen for about half an hour, sounding like a rocket ready to take off.. I brought it second hand and I don't have an installation CD, at least if I do it's not here at uni with me anyway.. Any ideas?! Thanks

Not knowing what your os is very difficult regarding offering troubleshooting solutions.  Most if not all the system discs are machine specific.
Replacement System Discs can be obtained from Apple's Customer Support - US (800) 767-2775 for a nominal fee. You'll need to have the model and serial number of your Mac available.

  • Computer sounds like it is taking off

This may be a simple fix, but for some time my computer makes an incredibly loud background noise .. almost sounds like it is taking off. A very, very loud humming. I have run diagnostics on it and reinstalled applications, but to no avail. This may be a hardware problem, but I am unable to run the Apple Hardware test that came with the start-up software. Any suggestions?

This would get better response and a more accurate answer if posted in the G5 usage forum.

MY SOUND SOUNDS LIKE IM DOWN IN A WELL

    Hi,
One thing to check is the following.  Right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select 'Playback Devices'.  Left click the default device once to highlight it ( it's usually 'speakers & headphones' ) then click the Properties button.  Click the Enhancements tab and make sure that none of these are selected apart from 'Loudness Equalization'.  Click Apply to save the change and then click OK in all remaining windows and see if this has helped at all.

Never, never never never never never partition any drive where you will be doing/installing, editing etc. any video production.
If you want use Tiger and Leopard, then either install one or the other on a separate, not partitioned drive.
Any do not ever partition any drive where you will be doing/installing, editing etc. any video production.
    I guess I said that.
Jordan, video production should be installed and should run a cleanest system possible.
partitioning is not part of that system
    in my view

  • New 27'' Imac fan sounds like jet engine

Hi all, i am having some serious issues with my attempt to enjoy apple computers. I am a first time user coming from pc's, just due mainly to the price difference. I just got my first apple computer, a 27'' imac (the standard one, no bells and whistles for this struggling college student). Just want one mainly for recording music and doing research papers. Had to get the first one replaced due to a bad optical drive in the first day. Just brought the replacement home and after 2 days i turn it on and it sounds like a 747 is taking off in my bedroom. I am not the most computer savvy person around, but looked up as much as i could on forums. Tried all the resets and nothing works. Everytime the computer is on there is a turbine that also comes on. I downloaded the istat widget thing and it says my cpu fan is running at over 3000 rpms. I'm no air dispersment specialist, but to me that sounds high. Does anyone know if this is common as of late, and any possible fixes?? I have an telephone appointment with an apple guy tomorrow, but am pretty sure it is going to just turn into a "buy the 3 year $170 applecare plan" speech, like when i called for the disc drive.
Second, are apple computers poorly made?? I know it's wierd asking on the apple website, but i have to get some answers. 2000 dollars is alot of money to me, and the fact that i've had 2 problems in less than a week's time scares me. Should i keep trying to get a good imac that won't crap out, or should i buy something else? Thanks in advance for any replies, i really appreciate it.

Thank you guys for your comments and suggestions. I really appreciate it. I'm thinking of taking it in for repair or replacement. My only concern is that this is 2 times in one week i've had to go and get it replaced. And that's brand new. What is the reliablity for this product going to be in 6 months to a year. For 2000 dollars i don't expect to have to do that. Also apple is not paying my labor to repackage everything, take it down 5 flights of stairs, go to the inconvinently placed apple store at the center of an outdoor mall, pay for my gas, or for my time that i could be using to do something productive. I guess maybe i'm just frustrated, but still. Now if i get a new one i may not be able to enjoy it as much because i will just be waiting for it to break down. Maybe i'll just cut a flap in the new box so i can see the screen and a few holes in the back of the box to run the cables. Then when it breaks down i can just close the flap and push the cables back through, and have it all ready to go back in no time flat. Thank you again for your suggestions, i'm just very ticked off right now.

  • MDD Fan sounds like its struggling

Ok, so my MDD has always sounded like a jet wanting to take off, well lately, i noticed that the fan (the big main one) has been getting higher in the revs, then just sitting there, sounding like is struggling, and the CPU gets pretty darn hot, just touching it, it is hot, and the temperature monitor i have on my menubar reads 137 degrees Farenheit, thats pretty hot. Do i need a new fan? If so where can i get one?

    Japanmac,
Strange as it may seem I think I found the problem with the short-term "rising" temps in my system. You remember that USB wireless adapter I got from that person on ebay? The netgear wg111v2? Yeah, that one.. I think because of the amount of wattage that put out, it must have contributed to the short-term rising temps in my system. Strange as it may seem. This is the 1st time a USB wireless adapter did this to my poor MDD! Temps are now back at 100-105 as of right now, but I do expect them to get back into the low to mid 90's.
Have you ever heard of a wireless USB adapter contributing to heat in an Apple machine? And the guy who I bought this from told me it works for a G4 only. While this is true, it is apparent that this little bugger also is a contributor to heat in a G4 or other Mac.
Also, the drivers for this are, at best, very primitive and not really much tweaking can be done to make it open websites faster.
In addition, I also pulled apart my system this afternoon and gave the processor a fresh dose of arctic silver!

Is this thing a piece of junk?  My MacBook Air is running fine.  I've literally only charged the MacBook Pro battery a handful of times -- it's brand new.

At these prices don't screw around.  Just call applecare to arrange an appointment at the nearest apple store.
