My computer stopped recognizing my 6th gen nano.  i have unstalled and reinstalled itunes.  any other suggestions.

My computer stopped recognizing my 6th gen nano.  I have un then reinstalled itunes as I was prompted.  Still nothing.  My account is up to date and my last purchase was a few weeks ago.  Apple wants me to purchase @ 29.99 an opportunity to speak to a tech.  Hoping someone out there can offer some assistance.  Thanks.
