My computer tells me that Firefox is still open even when I can not see it. It will not allow me to open it to use.

I received an error message about a "spooler" and Firefox crashed. Ever since then I can not open Firefox but when I close down my computer it says Firefox is open. I have no access to Firefox

There are a few possible causes for that error, for details see [[Firefox is already running but is not responding]].

  • When I close firefox I can't open a window again. It tells me that firefox is still running and I have to restart my system. This is a recurring problem on a brand new system and very irritating.

    I don't know what other details I can give you. I am not very computer wise. Just an every day web browser and emailer. This is a catch 22 problem. For example when I am installing a program; adobe flash player for example, it tells me to close firefox to continue and when I do I get the firefox is still running message even though there is no window. And so the installation isn't completed. I like firefox but this is a bit of a dealbreaker. hope you can help.

    * Try this.
    * Type in the address bar about:config.
    * Accept the warning.
    * In the page that appears, in the Filter box, type network.http.max-connections.
    * Change the value to 32 (which is probably set to 256 in your case).
    * Close the about:config page.
    * Restart the browser.

  • Firefox is not responding after clicking on symbol, Cannot delete firefox because it tells me that it is still open! Windows 7 64 bit

    Firefox is not responding at all. Would like to delete it and reinstall, however when trying to uninstall a message appears that I first have to close firefox! In short: cannot delete firefox, cannot reinstall, cannot use it. Operating system Windows 7, 64 bit, Sony VAIO Laptop PCG 81213M. Firefox has been working fine before. IE is working fine.

    This may help if you have had the same problem as me on occasions.
    Right click on a blank area of the Task-Bar. Select "Start task manager" from the menu that appears. Along the top of the "Task manager window" select the "Processes" tab. You will see a list of running processes. Scroll down the list until you see Firefox. Highlight it and click on the "end process" button at the bottom right. Click "end process" on the warning popup that appears. Firefox should disappear from the list. Now you should be able to start it or uninstall. If Firefox doesnt appear in the list at all then this fix is not for you. Hope this helps.

  • I am told that Firefox is already open and I should turn it off before continuing to update.

    When I open Firefox, I am prompted to update and I say yes. Then it starts to install the update, but a window comes up and tells me that Firefox is already open, when it is not. This also happens when it restarts when I have installed an add-on.

    Do a clean reinstall and download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
    Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.<br />
    Don't remove personal data when uninstalling.
    It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
    You can skip the step to create a new profile, that is not necessary for this issue.

  • I close Firefox and then try to shut down my computer, but Windows says that Firefox is still running. It does not show up as running in Task Manager. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times with same result.

    I have also had problems starting Firefox. I click the icon and nothing happens. That problem is intermittent. The Windows message that Firefox is still running after I have closed the Firefox browser keeps occurring and I do not know how to remedy this.

    The one thing that is locking up fire fox is the plug ins. You have to check to see if a plug in is locking up firefox first of all.
    To see the processes press : CTRL+ALT+DEL. then click the tab marked "Processes" Then look for Fire Fox and click on it. Click the Yes button when the warning box show up.
    Then do the say for "Plug-in Container" I believe that is called.
    this is because all ads are now flash ads or video ads. They lock my computer up all the time.
    When the CTRL+ALT+DEL are pressed. Keep this minimized and you can see if your computer is running at 100% memory near the clock. If the box is totally green, you are running a lot of programs on your system. Check the processes and find out what is not needed. Also watch your virtual memory. Rule of thumb is 1.5x total memory.
    Then now it would be able to shut down the computer the right way.
    Hope this helps you out.

  • What do I do to straighten out this problem... When I try to access Firefox after having logged out of a previous session I get a msg that Firefox is still running and I have to restart the computer in order to access internet.

    All you need to do is wait. While Firefox appears closed, it's not. It doing house cleaning. Cleaning out cookies and cache. How long it takes depends upon how much garbage you have collected.
    If you start the Task Manager and open the Process window, you will be able to see when Firefox has finished up and closed down.
    If you forced Firefox to close using the task manager, then the house keeping process seems to freeze up.
    Also, as you've already found out from the above link, some programs and plugins will prevent Firefox from closing properly. I've found this less common then simply being in a hurry. But you need to also consider it.

    In an effort to restore my iPad with iTunes on a computer that is not synced to my iPad, it tells me that I must have the passcode, which I do not remember. What do I do now?

    You will need to restore the iPad using Recovery Mode. Since you are using a computer that you have never synced with in the past, you will have to erase the device and will lose all content. You will be able to download your purchased content as long as you use the same Apple ID that you bought the content with in the first place - as long as the content is still available and the downloading of past purchases is available in your country.

  • A msg appears that Firefox is still operating and to close it. However it is not operating. What can I do? It does not show up on the Task Mgr window.

    I had a crash of Firefox and since then I can not open it again. The msg appears that Firefox is already in use; however, I deleted Firefox from my system and tried to download a new version to no avail. I can not install the new version because I get a msg that Firefox is still running. I am using E IE for now and this is causing some problems. I would like to use Firefox but am not certain how to rectify this problem. Reboot did not solve the problem.

    You're running an older version of Pages, perhaps in a folder called "iWork '09" in the Applications folder, or else on your Desktop. Quit it and launch the one at the top level of Applications.

    I have the same problem. Firefox won't unload regardless of how long I wait. Literally hours ... I must go in and 'end the process'. This has been a real hassle for a while now. Even considered giving up on firefox. Please look into this! An additional problem; I have to run firefox to get the updates, but I can't get the updates to take because I can't get firefox to unload so I can restart it.
