I can't get my computer to show icons

I need more information.
If this is an imac, then unplug everything from the back of the imac, and place the imac, face down on a towel so you can read the data from the foot pedestal of the machine.
I have mine oriented screen side up for repairs. But, you need to orient your screen down so that you can observe and write down for us, the string of information found at or near the bottom where you see barcode information. In my instance, I see the following data:
iMac 20/2.16/256VRAM/2x1GB/250/SD/KM

Key in the serial number and the lookup will tell you exactly how your imac/ macbook, where it was made, when it was made, the exact model number and how it was configured when it shipped out from the factory. This will give me and others a clue as to what imac hardware that is experiencing a problem. The 2nd piece of information that is needed is what version of the Mac OSX that you are running. are you running 10.5 (leopard) ? OSX 10.6 (snow leopard)? OSX 10.7 (lion)?
Otherwise, we are just guessing in the dark.

Which app icon is missing?
Are you sure it wasn't moved?
Have you checked on another page or in folders?
Does it show in spotlight search? (Swipe down from the center if the screen)
Check your restrictions:
Settings > General > Restrictions
You can also try resetting your Home Screen Layout:
Settings > General > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout
Delete it:
Settings > General > Usage > select the app > Delete
and redownload:
Open the App Store > Updates > Purchased

Computer turns on but nothing appears on the screen

Hi,
I have had this desktop computer for about 2 years. I usually use it almost daily and turn it off at the end of the day. Every few months or so the computer would turn on but nothing would appear on the screen. I would have to hold the power button to turn it off then turn in on a couple times or wait until the next day and the computer would turn on and everything would appear on the screen and work perfectly. Last week, the computer once again turned on but nothing appeared on the screen, except this time, after a week, the computer will now turn on except there is still nothing appearing on the screen. I no longer hear the fans running, however, I hear everything else running as normal. I have unplugged and re-plugged in all the cords multiple times and still, nothing.
Please help! Thank you.

I can't get the computer to recognize a DVD, it just keeps spinning but no icon appears on the desktop

What do I do when the CD/DVD drive won't acknowledge my disk?
It spins and whirrs but no icon appears showing it is recognized. I'm trying to install software to use an external recording device
the Zoom H4n stereo recorder.
All I want is to get the computer to accept the disk and show it is in there.
I've had this occur more than once with disks.

Sometimes cleaning the disc with a microfiber cloth will help.

iPod not recognized in 'My Computer' and in iTunes for Windows

My ipad was in the process of updating (ios7) while at the same time syncing with my laptop. suddenly the screen turned black and after few seconds the new itune icon appeared on the screen. the same icon appears even after i reset it.

My computer died the other day and when I got home to plug it in, it would turn out but would stay on the gray screen with the apple logo in the midle with the loading symbol at the botton. I've left it on his screen for a half an hour hoping it would load but it hasn't. What do I ned to do?

The power source to keep it on is the power adapter and that it's "Not charging" on the battery settings. And my charger seems to charge other computers fine.
The part of my mac where the adapter (L-shaped, magnetic) attaches is a bit damaged - a small piece of the white case/body around the part where the adapter attaches is broken off, but that's just an outer damage.
I don't know what's wrong with my computer, and if anyone has had a similar experience or knows what's going on, it'd be tremendously helpful!

Doubtful an upgrade would fix a hardware issue. If you are thinking of upgarding to Lion, best to do all necessary maintenance first.

You could try restoring the iPod, but quite honestly it sounds like a bad hard drive and it needs service.

I'm sorry to learn that your phone is having problems starting up, marinema08. I'm sorry if this is incorrect, but are you using the original HTC Droid Incredible or a later Droid Incredible model? Please try placing your phone in Safe Mode to see if you are able to move past the Droid eye. http://vz.to/1kdQWVI If you are able to enable Safe Mode, please try deleting any recent applications you have added.

My computer turns on but then immediately shuts down.

It seems my computer turned itself off in the middle of the night. This morning, when I tried turning it on, it wouldn't leave the white initial screen with the apple logo and the waiting sign so I manually shut it down. I waited a couple of minutes before doing so. Then I turned it back on again and the same thing happened. The third time I turned it on, the white screen appeared and then it shut down on its own! Next time I did the same thing and it took less time before shutting down on its own.
My computer is connected to the energy source. It's not connected directly to the wall, there is a no-break with a very weak battery and that's connected to the power source.
My concern is that there was very little memory left on my computer and I was downloading more movies.
It the problem coming from my computer or is it the energy source?

Try connecting the plug directly to an outlet. That should determine whether it is the energy source or not.
If the same, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Want to display MacBook Pro on TV but no icons appear

I bought a DVI to HDMI lead to view the MacBook pro's screen on a 32" Sony Bravia, but all that appears is the wallpaper of the laptop!??... No icons, or windows of software opened, just the wallpaper.
I went into system settings/displays and noted that the tv displayed a window showing the Sony tv listed, yet it wasn't on the laptop! As I changed the resolution on the laptop to see if anything changed, the tv would show a split second of some of the icons as it tried to change but reverts back to just wallpaper.
I initially mentioned that the lead doesn't work to the supplier and that one of the pins was slightly inset on the laptop end, so they sent out another, which is identical and performs the same.

If you can see the desktop wallpaper on the TV everything is working normally. You have an extended desktop. If you move the mouse cursor off the edge of the MBP's screen you will see it appear on the TV. Similarly you can drag windows from the MBP's screen to the TV. At present the MBP's screen is the primary display and shows the menu bar and dock, and the TV is the secondary display. To change this go into System Preferences -> Displays -> Arrangement. You will see an image of two screens, a smaller one representing the MBP's display and a larger one representing the external display. At the top of the smaller screen in the image is a bar, this represents the menu bar at the top of the screen. Drag it from the smaller screen to the larger screen. The external display will become the primary display and the menu bar and dock will appear there and any new windows or applications that you open subsequently will appear there too.
