  • Mac Computer won't recognize 3G iPod anymore!

So I have two different iPods, both 3rd generation (10GB and 20GB) which my computers won't recognize. When I go to system profiler, it shoes that an iPod is connected via firewire but that's it. Nothing shows up on my desktop or iTunes application. The iPod will say "do not disconnect" and it looks as if it's charging but that's about it.
    FYI: The three different computers I've tried it on 1.) iMac G4 / 1.25 Ghz / 10.5.6 OS X / iTunes 8.0.2, 2.) iMac G4 / 1 Ghz / 10.5.6 OS X / iTunes 8.0.2, and 3.) MacBook Pro / 2.16 Ghz / 10.5.6 OS X / iTunes 8.0.2. NOTHING SEEMS TO WORK
I haven't used these iPods in a long time but they both are responsive to being charged (one of the iPods only seems to charge when in 'disk mode', though). All I'm trying to do basically is restore both of them to their original factory settings and than I hope to start using them again.
If anyone has any suggestions or has dealt with similar problems I'd appreciate any help you can offer me. I currently connect them to my computers through a firewire/dock cable as my usb/dock cable which came with the iPod doesn't seem to work. Sigh.
    Thanks

Since you opened it, try disconnecting the battery and the hard drive connector. It connects at two points, one at the hard drive and one at the logic board. Visually inspect the connection points for any corrosion. Then firmly reconnect at those two points and reconnect the battery. Be care with the delicate ribbon cable and connector that connects the two halves of the case. Without closing the case completely, see if it works any better.
NOTE: When you are about to close the case, be sure to align the HOLD switch on the case with the mechanism on the logic board. You'll see what I mean. It is easy to forget and then you have to open the iPod again to get the HOLD switch to work.
It is very possible that the hard drive is faulty. It's the most common failure for any iPod with a hard drive inside.
Both the 10GB and 20GB 3G iPods are the thinner type, with the single-platter hard drive. Those drives go up to 30GB (used in the 4G iPod photo). However, the earlier 30GB drive was the thicker two-platter type, so that type will not fit inside your thin iPod (they were used in the thick body 3G iPod). I've never tried a 30GB thin drive in a 3G iPod, but I see no reason why it would not work.
The larger capacity drives used in later iPods (starting with the 5G "video" iPod) use a different type of connector, so they will not work in any 4G and earlier iPod.
Since you seem to have one of the two working, and those hard drives are a bit expensive (and probably sold as used on eBay), I would put the new battery in the one that works and use the other one for spare parts. The 3G parts, such as the logic board and screen, are interchangeable. The cost of buying a replacement hard drive will get to a good way toward a new iPod that does a lot more stuff.

Well, now I feel like an idiot. I was using TWO CORDS. Ya, don't make my mistake. The one I had a problem with was made by a company that was not apple, and it was for CHARGING. I bought it with charger, and that's all it can do. It doesn't send data like the real cable. So, check your usb cables. :S

  • My computer no longer recognizes my iPod Touch. And the iPod Touch does not recognize that it is connected to a computer.

My computer no longer recognizes my iPod Touch. And the iPod Touch does not recognize that it is connected to a computer.  It has worked great for many days until today.
I’ve tried two different Apple cables.
I’ve tried different USB ports on the computer.
I have rebooted both the Mac and the iPod.
I’ve wiggled the cables and checked for dust in the connectors.
The iPod charges using this same cable connected to wall wart.  That’s a good sign.
Both the Mac and iPod seem to work fine separate from each other.  They just won’t talk anymore.

    iTunes 9.2.1
    iPod Touch 32GB, version 3.1.3 (7E18), model PB533LL

I found this possible solution on another support thread, so I tried it.
    turn off iPod
hold Sleep and Home buttons to start it.
When Apple appears, let go of Sleep button, but keep holding Home button.
When screen goes blank, let go of Home button.
Connect cable and check iTunes to see if it has conencted.
This did not work for me.
I then turned off the iPod, restarted the Mac, and restarted the iPod normally.
I connected them with the cable, and it works like normal.  :-)

    Hi msclaude,
Welcome to the Support Communities!  I'm not sure from your post what steps you have tried, but it sounds like you may need to use recovery mode to address the issue with your unresponsive iPod touch.

If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
You can put your iOS device into recovery mode, then restore it using iTunes.
    Use recovery mode
You might need to use recovery mode to restore your device in these cases:
iTunes doesn't recognize your device or says it's in recovery mode.
You see the Apple logo onscreen for several minutes with no progress bar.
You see the Connect to iTunes screen.
Learn what to do if you see the progress bar onscreen for several minutes.
To put your device into recovery mode, follow these steps:
Turn off your device and leave it off.
Plug in your device's USB cable to a computer with iTunes.
Hold down the Home button on your device as you connect the USB cable. Keep holding down the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
When you see this screen, release the Home button. If you don't see this screen, try steps 1 through 3 again.
When your device is connected, iTunes will open. You'll see a message saying that iTunes has detected an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch in recovery mode.
Use iTunes to restore your device. Restoring in recovery mode will erase your device. If you previously synced with iTunes or iCloud, you might be able to restore from your backup.Get more help
Learn what to do if you don't see your device in iTunes for OS X, or in iTunes for Windows.
If you put your device into recovery mode by mistake, restart it. Or you can wait 15 minutes and your device will exit recovery mode by itself.
I hope this information helps ....

  • Old iPod mini can't be recognized after formatting, and iTunes 'Apple Mobile Device Driver not found.'

My roommate gave me an old iPod Mini a few days ago. It was working fine 'til I plugged it into my computer and it asked me to format it. I did, and now it cannot be recognized by iTunes or my computer. My computer views it as a "removable disk" which cannot be accessed. In devices, it is listed as an Apple iPod though, so I'm hoping not all is lost. I have tried many quick fixes I've read on internet (including changing disk letter) but to no avail. I have reinstalled the new iTunes and now that is telling me it has not installed properly, and when I ran diagnostics, it reads that the Apple Mobile Device Driver not found. I will copy & paste all the info from the diagnostic run below, and if anybody can help me with my new (old) iPod, I'd be everly greatful!

If AMDS is running, you are using a USB port directly on the computer and not a hub, you have disconnected other USB devices except keyboard and mouse, you have completely uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes as described in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925, You have tried cleaning the connector on the bottom of the phone, you have tried a different cable, you have installed the latest USB drivers for your computer, you have disabled your antivirus and firewall, you are running as an Administrator account and you have tried creating a new user on your computer and connected when logged in as that user then you have exhausted my knowledge. The only other thing to try is a different computer. If it isn't recognized on a different computer you have a hardware problem. Good luck!

  • Itunes/computer won't recognize my ipod - my solution

I offer this only because I had a problem, it got solved and it might help others ...
And the answer was obvious, but only after I solved it ...
My computer wouldn't recognize my ipod. Connected it, nothing happened usually. iTunes wouldn't open. Sometimes it would recognize it for a second. It would toggle between recognition and nothing.
    The answer, was simple.
My computer was old. I only had 256 ram.
    iTunes is a memory hog.
When I realized this, I had better results when I closed out every other program and eliminated some processes.
But it still didn't work the way it should.
A new computer and a gig of ram ... all good.
    Just wanted to share ...
