My computer won't start up from sleep mode - the spinning pin wheel never goes away

When I try to awake my computer from sleep mode, I get the never ending spinning pinwheel.  I have to power down and re-start.  Any ideas why this is happening?
thanks

  • Computer won't wake up from sleep mode

Hello I am having an issue with my computer not waking up from sleep mode.
    Example:
I walk away from my computer for a certain amout of hours and it goes into sleep mode. I come back and move the mouse or hit any keys on the keyboard; nothing, doesnt come back to life.
I have the latest driver updates, I have tried looking this up but came up with nothing, and also I thought that I set it so it wouldn't go to sleep but don't know if I did it right.
    This is my computer:
Laptop Toshiba Qosmio x505-(sorry don't know the exact spec)
    Thank you,
    Dillan

Try resetting the power plans to the default. Enter this at an elevated command prompt.
       powercfg -restoredefaultschemes
If you need to repost, look on the Toshiba label on the bottom of your laptop. Gives us the full model name/number like Qosmio X505-Q830, and give us your model's part number like PQX33U-00K00H. As well, please confrim what OS version you're using like Windows 7 64bit.
Let us know what happens. Good luck.

  • Won't wake up from sleep mode

I have only had my iMac for a couple weeks and four times now it won't wake up from sleep mode. I have to use the on/off button for a response.

Since you have a new machine, I would call Apple immediately and have them deal with the problem.

  • X1C won't wake up from sleep mode using keyboard

Hi...so finally got my X1C today. One thing I am noticing is that the machine won't wake up from sleep mode when I press any key on the keyboard -- it only wake up by pressing the power key. This is a bit unexpected to me. Is it by design, and is there any way to change this?
    Thanks for your help.
    Solved!

Does it awaken from stand-by if you press the Fn key? That's been the ThinkPad standard for as long as I can remember.
    Regards.

Okay, I seem to have solved the problem I posted about earlier.  I noticed that the language preference in the upper right hand corner of the screen (between the date and time and the Spotlight icon) had somehow gotten switched from American English to French.  When I switched it back to American English, my password worked when waking the computer from sleep mode.  I have no idea why changing the language preference would affect the way the password works but that seems to have been the case.  I'll post again if I experience more problems.

  • G5 won't wake up from sleep mode

G5 is a year old ,recently updated to 10.4.8. When placed in sleep mode, I am unable to get it to awaken either by use of mouse (Apple bluetooth) or keyboard (Apple bluetooth). Furthermore, the fan invariably runs wild and I must shut down manually through power button. Any thoughts?

I've been unable to get my G5 dual 2.3 up for over a week. I took it into the Apple store (the mothership in SF) and they said I probably needed a new logic board ($800-$900). I took the computer home to connect it to my Powerbook so I can get all the files off of it (connect using a Firewire cable and restart the bad Mac while holding down the "T" key; this starts it up as a very expensive external hard drive so you can at least access the files).
Not willing to just give in, I decided to check these groups for similar problems. It turns out this problem has hit hundreds of people since at least 2005! Apple hasn't fixed it, either. They don't seem to have a clue what to do. I think we should consider class action to get them to replace any Mac that has this problem. From what I've read, whenever people take it in for repairs, the problem never goes away.
I find it irritating that the computer/software industry is the only industry that can get away with selling faulty parts and then charge you to repair it.

  • Snow Leopard won't always wake from sleep mode

Most of the time the system functions fine, but at least once a week, I cannot wake it from sleep mode using the mouse, space bar, or keys. I have to do a hard reboot, which I don't like doing. Are there settings I can adjust properly (Energy Saver or Computer Sleep time or Display time) to stop this from happening? Should it take a few seconds after I hit the space bar?
Or should I just shut it down at night or for periods of several hours?
Is there anything wrong with never letting it sleep? Thanks!

Interesting how a common thread I see on these failures is 4GB ram upgrades. I too have a 4GB aftermarket RAM kit in my late 07 black MB. No issues with this machine, having this exact hardware / RAM configuration for 1+ years. My problems started about the time I ran the 10.5.6 upgrade, which may or may not have included a firmware update.
I would be inclined to think memory timing issues or undervolting the RAM during sleep which causes it to corrupt. Perhaps the OEM RAM modules are looking for different timings / voltage than Apple provided RAM modules.
All said, I am VERY confident this is not a hardware defect but instead firmware related. It doesn't appear to be OS related as none of these failures are making it into the console logs - the machine is asleep, deeeeep sleep. For all intents when it starts it is as if it lost complete power and starts from hibernation file (or starts from scratch if you didn't have a hibernation file...

  • After start-up from sleep mode, Mail 6.2 shuts down and needs to be rebooted

After starting my iMac (Mountian Lion OS) from sleep mode and then staring Mail, Mail will crash (shut down) and needs to be restarted. This does not happen every time but enough to be annoying.  Does anyone else also experience this and is there a fix?  I have sent problem reports to Apple but they just seem to go into a black hole with no response.  I would appreciate any help or advice.  Thanks in advance.

I am also seeing the symptoms of this on my large (3500+) network of macs. We have seen it happen on MacBooks and MacBook Pros. I am curious to know do you have multiple airports in your environment or a single airport?
Also have you found any way to mitigate these effects (i.e does it still happen if you go to the apple menu and choose the sleep command)
Just curious, I want to find a solution to this because it seems to be very similar to what our users are seeing.

  • Macbook Pro (2012) won't wake up from sleep mode

    Hi,
When I purchased the Macbook it came with Mountain Lion. It worked fine. Then I updated to Maverick and lots of problems happened. The most annoying one is the wake up thing. I was glad to update to Yosemite thinking that it would resolve my problems. Nope. It still wake up very slowly from sleep mode, sometimes not at all -- I have to shut it down.
I don't know what to do.
(BTW, I tried every trick suggested on the Apple support page: SMC, PRAM...)
    Help !

  • Mac Book Pro won't wake up from "sleep mode"

After putting laptop to sleep last night, I wake up to a computer in "sleep mode"
The screen is black and not responding, the sleep indicator is lit steadily (not slowly blinking as it normally does in sleep mode) but the computer does not seem to respond to anything. Screen stays black. Does anyone have same issue? I was told that the video chip is shot but I am not sure. Any advise would be appreciated. Thank you.

An accumulation of old wireless networks you have joined can cause similar symptoms. If you can get the computer running, do System Preferences > Network and select the Airport connection, then click the "Advanced..." button. You should see a window listing all networks you've joined. Delete all except those you use on a weekly basis. Restart and try letting it sleep.
When my Late 2007 MBP had the same symptoms as you describe, the system log showed it was try to connect to a lodge network miles away where I stayed a few weeks before. Deleting about 30 unused networks accumulated during months or travel fixed the issue, and it's not recurred, because I kno keep the list tidy.

  • When trying to log back from sleep mode, the screen behaves as a rotating cube, with the mouse pointer in the top left corner. Hangs.

    iMac OS X Ver 10.7.3
    21.5 Inch, Mid 2011
    2.5 FHz intel Core 5
    12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
When the computer in woken from sleep mode we see two login options (bineg used by two users).
But when we try to login, the screen just behaves as a sluggish rotating cube.
Nothing works, we just have to hard boot at this time.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • When my IMac awakes from sleep mode, the password login screen freezes and no cursor appears.

Hello!  When my IMac awakens from sleep mode, my log in screen is frozen (I can't type anything) and there is no cursor.
I can turn the computer off and on again and then I have an active log in screen, but if I walk away from the computer and it goes into sleep mode and i have the same problem trying to bring it back from sleep mode.
    Thoughts?

    Hey Kristogirl,
I understand that when waking from sleep mode, your iMac freezes. Try executing these two troubleshooting steps:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
OS X Mountain Lion: Reset your computer’s PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11243
If neither of those help the issue, I would follow the steps in the next article, specifically the "If the issue occurs in various applications, or in Mac OS X" section:
Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue

  • MacBook won't "wake up" from sleep mode since downloading Mavericks.

I have a 2008 MacBook and since downloading Mavericks, I've had a lot of issues when the computer is in "sleep mode." There are many times where it won't wake up and just remains a black screen. I'm forced to shut it down and turn it back on. When I do this, I have to login and it reloads everything I had had opened when it was put into sleep mode. Help! Thanks.

I have the same issue with my Macbook Pro 2.4
Have you by any chance installed a new RAM?. I've just added new 8 GB RAMs & I noticed the issue afterwards, but I'm still not sure if it's the cause.
