My cooling fan won't stop kicking in on Mac Pro
Suddenly in the last week or so my cooling fan started kicking in while over the past 2+ years it has only run once or twice - now it won't stop!
I thought that it may have been due to an increase in RAM from 7G to 24G (3, 8G matched sticks) but after un-installing the 24G it was still running frequently, though not as much.
I have performed (in order) both a PRAM and SMC reset. I have also repaired all discs, reset permissions and dumped render files (I primarily use my Mac for video editing in FCP X).
I am fearing now that this may in fact be due to recent updates to Lion (10.7.3) or FCP X (10.0.3)
In an attempt to get FCP X to run better (there are many bugs in the latest update as evidenced by numerous posts in that discussion area) I also contacted NVIDIA for updates to my graphics card and was told by them that it is not compatible with Lion. I now have a Radeon card on order from the Apple store.
Any other advice?? This fan is not only an annoyance for me but as I also record voice-overs for my clients I simply cannot have it running all the time.
> I am fearing now that this may in fact be due to recent updates to Lion (10.7.3) or FCP X (10.0.3)
Only if the RAM is "defective" or "boarderline" would a new OS trigger an issue. But then someone else jumped to same conclusion when they upgraded to Lion recently and had been running Snow Leopard for awhile.
Every new OS brings some changes and some RAM will fail and fall to the wayside but the only way to know is trial and error; to get the vendor to replace and test.
Sometimes the RAM has been loosely seated. Sometimes the OS seems to be potential culprit (doesn't happen with clean install).
A USB or Firewire cable can be enough, too, even if just plugged and not attached to a powered on device.
You can even try two 8GB DIMMs and leave one out and see if process of elimination is of any value, or even boot wtih just a single DIMM. You don't need to have two or more.
But I would not mix 8GB with others, sounds like you had 3 x 2GB + 1GB, or 3 x 1GB + 4GB which would look and sound to be more iffy than your new set.
Btw, where did you get new set?

I have a 2011 iMac (21.5") and the fan won't stop running at full blast. I've spoken with Applecare support, and done all the steps... Which were:
1) SMC reset - performed three times
2) PRAM reset
3) Left the computer off overnight
4) Checked activity monitor - Nothing is open, and the actual activity monitor was the process taking up the most CPU, which was only 2%.
5) My hard drive is nowhere NEAR full - I still have 400GB/500GB available.
The computer functions properly, but the fan is just going non-stop. What could the issue be? I will definitely have to bring this in to the genius bar, but this is my father's computer and he isn't available during business hours to take this in. Does anyone know what this could be? Thanks for the help.Try running the Extended Apple Hardware Test to see if it has a hardware (thermal sensor or SMC) problem. It won't fix the problem, but it may help you understand and guide the service tech to the problem.

Early 2008 27 inch iMac running latest version of Lion.
I had a hard drive that kept corrupting files (not the original HD, been replaced once by apple) so I replaced it with a new (ish) 1 Tb WD green. But after I did this my fan won't stop running. I thought I had disturbed the HD temp sensor so I opened it back up again and made sure it was properly on the HD closed it but still constant fan.
from istat pro I'm getting readings
HD 37
CPU 29
CPU heatsink 28
Airport Card 30
GPU heatsink 33
HD Bay 38
Mem Controller 29
Optical Drive 30
All my temp values are there, so I assume my sensors are fine. I don't have AHT as I don't have my original install disks (I lost them somewhere in the last 7 moves between houses) I already tried resetting the SMC.
Can anyone tell me if these readings are normal? Are any high that would be causing my fan to stay on?Um, OK. I've just realized that the fan isn't running any more, and I've been using it for a couple of hours. I'm not sure if I should do anything else or just not look a gift horse in the mouth. Anyone have an opinion?

has anyone else had problems with their mail not loading properly and the multi gestures stopped working on their mac pro after new updates?
Have you tried calling Apple tech support?
http://www.apple.com/contact/ -
Im running 10.7.5 on a 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo 13" MacBook. Sometimes, the fan will not stop spinning. It'll increase and decrease speed, but when it gets going, it usually runs full tilt. The only things running are Safari, iTunes and mail. What could be causing this?
Hi Jorge A. Narvaez!
I have two articles for you that may help enlighten you a little about the fans on your MacBook:
Learn about the fans in your Mac

Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity

Take care, and thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities.

I recently changed the hard drive in my iMac. All went fine but now the fans will not stop blowing. They start about 10mins after restarting even though I am barely using the machine.
I checked the forums and have done the Resetting the SMC thing but it did not stop the fans blowing. wondering if anyone has any other suggestions?
thanksUnfortunately, those of us with 2011 iMacs are stuck with the hard drive replacement issue. Instead of insulting you with a warranty comment, see this article for some options: http://www.macworld.com/article/159956/2011/05/imacharddriveupgrade.html

Fans won't stop with new processor
I just had one of my dual processors changed out. I brought it home and turned it on. The fans will not stop running. I called the tech and was told that this is normal for about an hour? That was yesterday and the fans still run. Any ideas?
The techs should have run a thermal recalibration on the fans when they changed the processor. Sounds like they didn't do that. Take it back to them and have them perform that step.
The fans shouldn't run any more after the service than they did before. -
Hey,
while I created a new document, I started to zoom in/out particular areas of the images using the key shortkuts <space>+<cmd> for zooming in and <space>+<cmd>+<alt> for zooming out of an area.
While this works fine in my Photoshop CS5, it troubbles in CS6:
Once I want to zoom out (via <space>+<cmd>+<alt> and a left-mouseclick), the zooming won't stop until it reached the smallest zoom level, instead of zooming out just a step. It however works, while I zoom in (via <space>+<cmd> and a left-mouseclick).
I'm so used to this shortcut since a cupple of versions now (it also works in other programms as well) and it is realy annoying.
It also happens that when I press <space> and another key (e.g. to zoom in/out) that Photoshop CS6 does sometimes not release the hand-tool, that I use to move the canvas via holing <space> and left-mouse down. Pressing <space> again solve this. However, I would exspect the hand-/move-tool only to work while <space> is pressed.
Thanks.

> Do you run into the issue in Photoshop it the case when you use <CMD>+< - > ?
No, works fine. Although its not the best alternative, because my method allows to "specify" the zooming region (due to the mouse position)
> Did you try to reset the zoom tool (Right-click on the magnifier icon on the option bar?)
I did do a reset, but it didn't influence the "bad" behavior.
> Do you have a key repeater function activated in the OS (accessibility?)?
None that I know of. Couldn't find any. But if so, shouldn't it affect the zooming in as well (which isn't the case)?
> If you never use the animated zoom, you can disable it in Photoshop>preferences>general>animated zoom.
I tried both: enabled it causes the mentioned "error" behavior. Disabled the zoom out stops but its remarkably unresponsive: Once I use the key combination and click the left-mouse-btn it takes seconds before the zoom out happes; the process _feels_ quite long.
Best,

HT1338 Why has gmail stopped loading on my Mac Pro?
How do I get my mail back? It has stopped loading on my MacBook Pro.
Hopefully one of these steps should solve the problem.
1. Reset PRAM. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
2. Reset SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
3. Applications/Utilities/ Audio MIDI Setup.app
Audio Devices window
Side Bar
Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so uncheck it.

W530: GPU Fan Won't Stop After Starting
Hello all,
I'm the proud owner of a brand of the W530, which I'm absolutely loving.
One of the greatest things is how absolutely cool the laptop stays. And after much tinkering with TPFanControl, I've decided just to let the BIOS do it's thing and keep my laptop at a constant 40C temperature, even if it means having the fan on 2700RPM all the time.
One annoying little problem, though, is the apparent inability to control the GPU fan.
Once the GPU fan starts (say for example, I play a game for a short while), it will NEVER stop.
As I never turn off my laptop, and simply sleep it when not in use, this becomes incredibly annoying, as I'm having the loud GPU fan always running, even though there is no need for it to be.
Is this a problem with my computer or is this just the way these things are designed? Also, is there a way to manually tweak the GPU fan? (Although this is really stupid, I think we should be past the era where it becomes my job to manually set the fan everytime I want to use it for something, technology should be more advanced in this era)
Thanks in advanceSounds like what this solution was intended to address:

New Power Supply, Now Fans Won't Stop Running
Good evening.
About a week ago, my G5 went dead - no power at all. An Apple certified tech that I know came to my house yesterday to replace the power supply with one (600W version) that I ordered.
That got me up and running, but ever since then, ALL my fans have been running at high speeds nonstop. I looked to see if there is a firmware update and tried resetting the CUDA again - same results. Tried setting processor speed to reduced, even tried it on highest - same result. Only way I can get them to stop is to to the computer to sleep or shut it off. The fans were never like this before. Any ideas? This is quite bothersome. Thanks for your time.Hi eightfifteen-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple Discussion boards
I would agree with samsara that the thermal calibration should be performed. It is also quite possible that a thermal sensor was somehow left disconnected and is causing one or two particular fans to spin out of control.
The tech that you know should have performed the calibration while checking to ensure that your system was operating correctly. Have the tech come back with the proper software tools and do not let this person leave until it is demonstrated to you that your system is working correctly.

IMac fan won't stop running after Mavericks install
My fan seems be running all the time, in sleep mode and shut down (when power cord is plugged in).
This started after installing Mavericks??????????????????????????????? HELP.I have the same issue with my 2012 iMac 2.7 Intel Core i5 21.5"
The iMac fan runs constantly immediately when it is shut down and after a minute or so when it is put in standby.
This iMac just started doing this.
I have done the SMC reset numerous times and also the PRAM and DVRAM reset by hitting the Command, Option, P, and R after restarting.
This issue is beyond frustrating as the only way to shut off the fan ever is to pull the power cord.
Any additonal help would be appreciated. -
Loud fan, won't stop running at 6000 rpm.
So I'm a first year law student and had my 2010 macbook pro stolen from me 2 weeks ago at school and with exams + finals coming up I desperately needed a new computer fast. I only had $600 and wouldn't settle for a PC so I chose to buy a used macbook from a random guy on craigslist. I bought a late 2007 15" macbook pro that has snow leopard running on it and for some reason the fans are quite noisy. Normally I would take this issue to the apple store but I obviously don't have applecare on this. The previous owner had installed smcFanControl on it, which I hear usually does more bad than good... now I have no idea how to make the fans quieter, adjusting the speed only works temporarily. This is the 3rd mac I've owned and I recall my first mac being somewhat noisy too after a few years but not this bad. It's become impossible to use my computer in lectures or the library without getting death stares from people trying to concentrate, any help/advice is much appreciated! Thanks.
I'd try uninstalling smcFanControl and then doing a SMC reset to set things back to normal.

Installed Firware Update on my iMac, now the fan won't stop running.
I successfully installed the firmware update on my 20" Intel Core Duo 2 iMac. Everything was fine, it restarted all was working until I put it to sleep. This is when the fans came on and never turned off. I tried to reset the SMC by following the instructions to unplug everything and the power. I even left it overngiht unplugged. But now the fan is on high all of the time. It never even changes pitch like its stuck at one speed. I'm waiting for the applecare line to open at 9AM EST.
I have to say that I have been an apple customer for many years like many of you and I'm a bit bothered by my experiences so far with the new Intel line of computers. I also bought a new MacBook Pro that they had to replace after 4 days of use due to a fan noise that was abnormally high and pitched. The Mac Genius at the 5th Ave store didn't even try to take a look at it. He heard the words loud fan noise 4 days old and they replaced it on the spot. This experience of course reinforced my love of Apple. Lets see HP do that as quickly as Apple did. But to now have another problem with the iMac leaves me disheartened. I have more important things to do than run down to the Apple store again.
I'll let you know how it goes.Yes, I checked to make sure that the Firmware and EFI were the correct versions. We did an SMC reset, a PRAM reset etc. They replaced the iMac I just brought home a new machine. They couldn't figure out what was wrong with it either. The fan was running even after you put it to sleep. So they just replaced it. It will go into the refurbished line now.
As an FYI the Mac Genius told me, so take it with a grain of salt, that they have so many swaps on the new Intel Core 2 Duo machines that they have been shipping out almost as many as coming in. They have become so good at doing swaps in the 5th avenue store that they had us turned around in 5 mins.
This is the 2nd Intel Core 2 Duo in as many weeks that I have had swapped.
