My copy progress bar is jumpy

I just bought a new MacBook Pro 13. When I first got it and I would copy things the progress bar was smooth from start to finish. Now its all jumpy; it goes in 20-50Mb steps, its not smooth anymore.
any thoughts on this matter?

oh, and my hard drive never seems to go to sleep anymore?

  • Finder Copy Progress Bar File Path Reminder/Record?

Can someone please remind me if there is a way to see the actual file paths for what I am moving and where I am moving it to?
I have two copies going on which are going to take an hour or more and I need to remind myself how far into the process of sorting I am.
Basically the /folders/ are named rather generically and I am trying to make sure I can access as much as possible with respect to this.
ALSO, after the copy has completed - is there a record with file paths of what I have just done, in case I don't catch it before the Progress Bar completes...?
    Thanks.

    In Finder->View->show Path Bar.

  • Copying multiple files (1000+) - Progress bar update is slow! Any ideas?

When I copy 1000+ raw files from any drive to another it takes a long time before the copy progress bar shows up, and some times it just takes a long time before the progress is updated. When it is updated, it has already copied alot of the files. Quite annoying, because you don't really get if it has begun copying, if it's hanging or what... Seems to me that the new per-file progress bar takes up too many ressources!
Btw I'm not on a slow system. 2.5 Quad core i7 MBP, 16GB RAM, OCZ Vertex 3 SSD...
Anyone got any ideas on this?

The progress bars have always been wonky. Can't judge a thing by them.

  • Intel iMac - won't start - grey screen & progress bar

I have a 2006 Intel iMac - 20" model, Intel Core Duo, 2GHz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD, etc.  It was one of the very earliest Intel iMacs.  Kept updated, running OS 10.6, etc.
It has worked extremely well for over 5 years - apart from the Superdrive being temperamental sometimes - but has suddenly gone wrong.
Last week the machine completely froze for no apparent reason.  I had to force a reboot.  This failed - grey screen and the grey spinning wheel (if that's what it's called), indefinitely.
Forced reboot again and this time held down the shift key to go into safe boot mode.  This time it was successful, and I was able to get to the logon screen & log myself in.  I opened Disk Utility & attempted to do some diagnostics but the machine froze again.
Looking around various other forum postings...I rebooted the machine in single user mode and was able to get to the command line to type 'fsck -fy' to attempt to fix disk problems.  This failed repeatedly, with an error message 'invalid node structure'.
I tried to boot my machine from the OS X disc but my Superdrive refused to play ball - it would not read the disc (or any other disc for that matter, including a copy of DiskWarrior that I have).
I have now got hold of an external DVD drive in the hope that this would show up as a boot device when I switch the machine on while holding the option key down.  No such luck - the drive powers up ok (power via USB) but I'm not given the option to boot from it - in fact that screen doesn't appear at all.
All that happens now on powering up - regardless of what I do - is the grey apple symbol appears and a progress bar beneath it.  The progress bar gets stuck about 5% of the way along, and then after about 10 minutes it disappears and is replaced with the grey spinning wheel thingy.  And then it just gets stuck - nothing else happens.
    HELP!
All my important data is backed up on an external drive via Time Machine, so that should be safe, but I'm desperate to get the machine running again.
One thing that occurred to me is that I've had a program called ReFit installed on the machine which allowed me to run the machine as dual boot etc. (and I do have a couple of other small partitions on the drive, not currently used) but the ReFit welcome screen stopped appearing a couple of weeks ago for some reason.  I'm wondering if this has somehow messed things up...?
    Grateful for any suggestions...
    Thanks,
    Alan.

For the drive, you should be OK with any SATA 2 at 3 MB/s transfer speed. You could also use a SATA 1, no jumpers needed. (Not SATA 3 - can't be jumpered down.) The early 2006 Intels were 1.5 MB/s -- at least the drives were, so I'm assuming the SATA controller on the logic board was also. Might just be SATA 2 hadn't yet been introduced and can run the faster SATA 3 without jumpers. My guess is not. You should be able to set jumpers on the drive for backwards compatibility. You'll have to contact the drive manufacturer or go to their website for that info.
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac-core-2-duo-2.16-20-inch-sp ecs.html
As for the superdrive, I'd contact the manufacturer to check on compatibility.
Glad I'm able to help. BTW, in case you haven't noticed, maybe you want to have a look here.

  • MacBook Pro frozen on startup screen with progress bar and then it turns off

    Hello, I have a MacBook Pro 15" of early 2012 with a i5 Intel, 4GB of RAM  and a  500 GB HD.
I was installing the new suit of Adobe, when suddenly my Mac got frozen, vertical coloured lines appeared and the image on screen went distorted. I had to reboot the Mac by holding the power button until the screen turned off and when I turned it on, the lines appeared again and it itself automatically rebooted. Then the screen (now with no vertical lines) got frozen on the startup grey screen with the apple logo and the spinning wheel for hours with no response.
I tried to follow the steps of the official mac forums like verifying the HD with CMD+R and then Disk Utility, it says everything's fine; the same happens with CMD+S, no errors. I reinstalled Mavericks with the same CMD+R. I already reset the PRAM, SMC  and performed a Safe Boot staring up in Single user mode and Verbose Mode and nothing, the same startup screen. I made too thins thing of holding shift until the progress bar appeared.  Three days later (Today) I repeated the steps again and finally the verbose mode. Now, when I turn it on, the startup screen appears again (Apple Log and spinning wheel) with a progress bar. When it completes, the Mac turn itself off.
if you can help me, please. I don't know what else to do. The last thing is technical service.

  • Progress bar on startup

    Hi Guys,
I keep getting a progress bar on startup. Not every time, but at least every few days. I've had this before since installing Mavericks and eventually my drive was not reparable in disk utility and I had to do a clean install and start from scratch.
I'm using a Macbook Pro 2012 with a Sandisk Ultra Plus SSD.
One thing I've noticed is that it seems to happen when I shutdown and close the lid of the macbook overnight and leave it unplugged. I'm not sure if this is a coincidence or not.
I'm not sure exactly what is causing this issue and I can't seem to find what it is from the log files. I've pasted my log file in below, hopefully there's someone out there who can see what it is!

The progress bar usually means your Mac is booting into the Safe Boot startup, Safe Mode.
Do you see "Safe Boot" in the upper right hand corner of the screen.

  • Each morning I get a notice to download a Firefox security update. When I click install, I get a message saying Installing Firefox and Connecting to the update server. It never connects; the progress bar just spins all day.

Since shortly after installing Firefo 5 I get this message every time I start Firefox. A dialog box comes up that says Installing Firefox, followed by a spinning progress bar, followed by "connecting to the update server." It never progresses past this point and will stay this way indefinitely until I close the Window.
Also since installing Firefox 5, the program crashes at least once or twice a day and I have to quit and restart. Don't know if there's any relationship between the two issues.

If you have problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop
    * Firefox 5.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded

  • 10.6.8 update - progress bar not smooth anymore :s

Basically, after updating to 10.6.8 on my Macbook Air when I move a file over my Local Network over Wifi the progress bar jerks in increments now and doesnt smoothly increase.  I hopw Im explaining it well but it moves then stops for a few seconds, moves then stops for a few seconds.  Its not consistently moving.  It is also say 20 secs slower over a 2.5gb file than my Mini is using the 10.6.7 OS.
    Any ideas anyone?

Looking into this a little more, it seems that this is not wifi related as it does the same thing moving files to and from my external drive via usb.
Could this be due to the new TRIM system with SSD's on 10.6.8 and the way it accessing the drive when moving/copying?
Noone else get this on the Macbook Air 13inch 2010 128GB SSD drive?
    Thanks

  • HT1455 iMac shuts down itself in the middle of Safe Boot progress bar loading

Hi, Im using a late 2009 iMac 21.5'' on Mountain Lion. (Originally Snow Leopard I THINK)
I got the dreaded grey screen one day and after I did more reseach i tried using the Safe Boot way.
Now Ive encountered a new problem, everytime I turn on my mac, it shows the Apple logo and the Safe Boot progress bar.
Not even reaching halfway through the bar, it just shuts down itself, every single time.. please help?
Btw, I',m using a wireless keyboard, I had to go around borrowing a windows keyboard from my friends, I dont know if anyone can shade some light if i can use wireless to do the keyboard pressing thing when it starts up?
I've also tried inserting my original OS installation disc and press C..it just shows a grey screen, then the disc got ejected, then the Apple logo with the progress bar and then shuts down itself.
Please help, I just need to go into my system one more time and backup my important datas before i go for the 1TB Seagate Replacement Program.
Thank you so much, appreciate it!

Is that similar with this article http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1553 on 'Instruction for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk utility' ?
No, that copies the entire drive IF it's entirely readable which you don't need, you only REALLY need is your files as everything else (OSX and programs) can be replaced)
Ds store: I read your article on creating a data recovery.
This is designed to install OS X onto a external drive, boot from it and then:
1: Attempt data recovery via normal drag and drop methods on your Users folders.
2: If the above fails, to see if the internal drive is working via Disk Utility, and/or use Data Rescue software ($100) to attempt recovery of the files themselves, bypassing the file structure and whatever is causing the problem.
3: Build your extenral boot drive of everything the way you need it, then Carbon Copy Cloner the external onto the internal drive (new or erased whatever the case may be)
May I ask you why not port powered?
Mac's have been shutting off ports that are drawing too much current, like what port powered hard drives do.
Am planning to get myself a 3TB external HDD 3,5" for all my backups in time for my AASP journey
Too large for a boot drive, you basically want a external boot drive equal too or slightly larger than the boot drive your recovering from, because later you can use it as a bootable clone backup of the entire boot drive and store it for emergencies.
These large drives like 1TB and 3TB are sometimes problematic (especially with 10.6) when formatting. Also I advise all boot drives be Zero erased before OS X is installed or cloned onto it to reduce bad sectors,  a zero erase on a 3TB drive could take 6-10 hours.
If you want to use the 3TB, use it for file backup, not for your bootable clone your creating with the instructions I gave.
You see later on, once you got all your data off the internal boot drive, you build the external boot drive just like you would do a brand new erased internal drive. You add programs and whatnot, tweak it how you like. Because later on your use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the external onto the erased or new internal drive. Get it?
So 3TB is excessive if your internal boot drive is only 500GB, you will have 2.5TB left over.
Sure you can partition, but I don't advise having so many backups on one piece of physical media, you drop it, lose it or fry it, you lost everything.
So more and seperate pieces of backup are safer in that regard, hardware and software redundancy.

  • [SOLVED] Almost there just need a global progress bar

    Heya,
There's no man page for bar so I have looked at the code a bit. I am trying to have a progress bar to copy a folder with many files including symbolic links (unfortunately pycp does not support them yet). With the -s parameter, I can specify the approximate size of what I am copying but it works only if it is a single file.
I have also tried pv, pipemeter, orphan advcp, ecp, scp and I am now desperate.
Would someone be kind enough to help me ?

    This might help http://www.dwcourse.com/dreamweaver/ten-commandments-spry-menubars.php#one
Also, if you use DW CS5 click on Live Code and Live View. Then when clicking on the menu items in Live View, watch the changes in classes that occur. This mifgt give you a clue of what to do.

  • Progress Bars

    Hello All
I've been trying to get a progress bar to appear in a cell in a JTable. The Progress bar is to monitor the progress of a file copier i have written.
At the moment i have a class that does the copying with a ProgressMonitorInputStream <- pretty sure this is wrong...
and a JProgressBar <- the first parameter of the ProgressMonitorInputStream is my JProgressBar....
I don't like giving in to the fact that i can't do it so if anybody could point me in the right direction... even a clue? I'd be very grateful.
    Frustratedly
    Fuzzy

JTable has a cell editor which by default has a text field as the editor component and a default cell renderer which inherits from JLabel.
One could extend this two inorder to change the cell appearance.

  • Send/Receive progress bar is not shown in Outlook 2010

    Hi friends,
when ever i press send and receive option or F9, am not getting the send and receive progress bar in the bottom of the corner side. kindly help me

    Hi,
If you click the "Update Folder" button, will the Send/receive status bar appear?
Please browse to: %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook, rename the .srs file to ".old", then start Outlook again to check if the problem persists. The .srs file stores the send/receive
settings and a new copy of it resets the send/receive settings, check if then the problem is gone.

  • Iphoto progress bar

I opened iPhoto and marked all photos. I drag them all to my USB flash drive (fat32).
But I can't see any progress bar, where is it? I can see that the usb flash drive is beeing filled up.

I have made a copy of a week-ago version from time machine.  She has added no phtots since then.
To add to léonie's response the library must be restored as follows from within the Time Machine application:

  • Missing status bar or progress bar

I just installed Yosemite and I am experiencing a strange problem. Whenever I perform a function that is not quick, like compressing a large folder or copying a large folder to another hard drive, I do NOT see any status or progress bar. Do I need to change something in my preferences or is this a glitch on older iMacs?
    Thanks!

Neither of those normally do anything more than post a progress dialog. Are you sure it's not hidden behind an existing open window? Otherwise, the installation is defective. You should reinstall:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, or Yosemite
OS X Yosemite- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Customizing OI to add step progress bar

Hello custom RTOI experts!  I am attempting to make a customization to the full-featured LabVIEW RTOI (for TestStand 3.0) in order to provide the seemingly simple feature of a step completion progress bar on the execution page of the tab control.  Let me explain a little behind the concept I'm going for.  There are some steps in my sequences that take a relatively long time (15 minutes or so).  During this period, a requirement of mine is to have a progress bar that gets updates every so often such that by the time the step would ordinary complete, the progress bar is at 100%.  Initial attempts involved a separate VI that managed the progress bars, but having yet another window is not the ideal UI design...  Instead, I was hoping to integrate this functionality into the RTOI so that each time a new step begins executing, additional custom data (the expected step duration) is (optionally) sent to the RTOI providing the progress update portion of the RTOI code the necessary data.
Is there any sample code out there that performs some similar task so that I can get a better feel for how the pieces fit together?  In particular, there are a few things that are befuddling me:
    1) What is a good way to store this custom information (step duration) in the sequence file?  Should I modify the basic step types to add a new duration field which can be optionally set to something greater than the default, 0?
    2) How should the step duration get passed to the RTOI?  My current thought is to override the PreStep engine callback to send the custom duration field in a custom UIMessage, but that may be partly because I'm not familiar enough with the structure of the data is that is that is accessible via the sequence context...
    3) How do I link the progress bar data to the actual execution page that is currently being viewed.  Up to 4 executions can be running using the parallel model or the batch model in my sequences, so something would clearly need to be done so that when execution 1 is visible, the associated progress bar is shown, etc...  I'm assuming I can trap on some event when the user clicks on an execution in the list bar, but there is no similar code in the out-of-box RTOI - all that appears to be managed automatically by linking the controls to the execution manager.
Thanks for any pointers or code samples (or even suggested reading) that anyone can give.

    Thanks for the response.
I may indeed want to use the ProgressPercent message, but I'm not so sure just yet.  I did not want to leave the responsibility of sending UIMessages up to the VIs and other code modules called by the sequence - I was hoping for a simple solution to provide a new field (ExpectedDuration) that can be set for any given step.  In this way, the RTOI can manage updating the progress simply by counting seconds.  Perhaps there is some timer callback that can be leveraged to perform this function?
What I have so far is as follows: I have a new step type called PassFailTestWithDuration.  It is a copy of the PassFailTest step type with the addition of a ExpectedDuration property and a new PreStep which calls the PostUIMessageEx with a custom event (10001).  The expected duration and the RunState.TestSockets.MyIndex both get passed as parameters.  Inside the RTOI, I have added a UserMessage callback VI which stores the data in the appropriate slot of a global (indexed by socket index).  (The global array is implemented as what I've heard called an action engine - there are init, read, and write actions that it can perform on data stored in the VI, and it is set as non-reentrant so that race conditions cannot occur).  Each entry in the global array has 2 fields - the expected duration, and the current elapsed time.  My idea was to continually update the current elapsed time for all active executions and simply show a progress bar for the "active" execution by displaying its elapsed time/expected duration in each necessary event...
I think my main question now is - how do you determine the RunState.TestSocket.MyIndex of the active execution in the execution manager (or application manager)?  It seems like such an obvious thing to want to know, but I don't see it anywhere.
Thanks again for any hints you can provide!
