My cursor keeps disappearing.

It's very frustrating, when I am typing I will get a few letters in and all of the sudden, the selection icon is gone and I have to deselect where I want to type. I have tried to research this and have read to do a safe boot. I have done this and it works for a little while and then goes back to the problem. I can't say for sure but it happened around the time I installed Mavericks. Any suggestions on oh to resolve this issue

Meant to say select we're I want cursor to go, not deselect

  • Why does my cursor keep disappearing in the Google search bar?

When using FF or Google Chrome, I've noticed that my cursor keeps disappearing when using the Google search bar. I've tried using all the about:config tips, I've downgraded to earlier versions, I've pressed F7, I've unchecked the "hide cursor while typing" option in my mouse properties, I've checked for driver updates, I've tried disabling all add-ons and plug-ins, and I've checked another computer in our home as well. Same thing there. This seems to have become a problem in the last few days. IE seems unaffected by it. Just FF and Chrome.

No sir, there are no other tabs open, when it happens. For now, I've found a workaround, and I invite you to test it yourself.
I've been working on this problem all day. I've noticed that the cursor blinks very slowly in the Google search bar. If you press a key while the cursor is blinking "off", it will stay off until you let go of what key you're pressing. Conversely, if you press a key while the cursor is blinking "on", the cursor will remain visible as you type.
In IE, the cursor blinks much more rapidly, and blinks more "on" than "off." As a result the cursor remains on, no matter what you type or when, or what key you press, including the spacebar. This is not the case in FF or Chrome.
It was suggested in the Google forums that disabling "autocomplete" has helped with this problem. I followed the instructions and successfully disabled the "auto-complete" feature on Google. When I did that, I immediately noticed that the cursor blink speed doubled, like what I'm used to seeing. Further, no matter what I did, the cursor did NOT disappear anymore.
The link for google with autocomplete disabled is http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0
Go there and see if you notice a difference in the blink speed of the cursor. On my computer, the difference is drastic. While I do enjoy "auto-complete" and will miss this feature, I generally don't rely on it, and much prefer a consistent cursor.
I greatly look forward to your feedback on this. If you figure out a way to have Google work normally without this workaround, I will be forever in your debt.

  • Cursor keeps disappearing

My cursor keeps disappearing when I'm working with Photoshop on my iMac.  In order to get the cursor back, I have to ALT+TAB out of Photoshop and then come back.  A search on the web shows that many people are experiencing this problem with Photoshop on their Mountain Lion Macs.  How do we correct this problem?

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to come across that way.
I was just trying to suggest turning them ALL off to see if that helped.
If things were way better, the user could put one back at a time, which
    would find the culprit.

ANYway, It's cool that you're making progress.
If your cursor doesn't disappear in other apps, like word processing or email,
it' probably not your mouse, either

  • Why does my cursor keep disappearing on Firefox (and nothing else) when it's not being moved?

If I'm not moving the cursor it disappears entirely, which is highly annoying. It only does this on Firefox, nothing else. It went through a permanently flickering period before this, too.

Thanks for the advice, AmazingBeast - I think that probably would have worked. I isolated the problem eventually to a particular web page I'd been using a lot and had kept open. Once I closed it everything was fine again, although it means whenever I want to look at that page I have to put up with the Disappearing Cursor!

  • Why does my cursor keep disappearing?

I can't type it's so frustrating! Every 10 or so letters I type I have to reclick on the area I'm typing to be able to continue. It stops and then makes some stupid sound.  To type this I had to reset the cursor 12 times.
    HELP!!!!!

Since this is a MacBook Pro, you might ask your question in that forum; this forum is for iMac users.
You might check to see if the problem still happens when you Safe Boot Mac OS X.  If the problem isn't there when you Safe Boot, then it's probably related to a third-party program or startup item.
When something is handling keyboard input, we say it has "focus".  When you're typing into a text field, then that field has focus.  If you click somewhere else, then focus moves to where you clicked.  What you're describing sounds like focus is moving somewhere unexpectedly.  It might help to figure out where.
While it won't solve your problem, VoiceOver can help is figure out where focus is going.  VoiceOver is a program that's part of Mac OS X that is designed to let blind users use the computer, but it also may help shed some light on your situation.
Open System Preferences, and select Universal Access.  Under the "Seeing" tab, click "Open VoiceOver Utility…".  In the "Navigation" section, make sure that "Initial position of VoiceOver cursor" is set to "Keyboard focused item".  Also, make sure that "VoiceOver cursor follows keyboard focus" is checked.  Close VoiceOver Utility and go back to System Preferences.  Still in the "Seeing" tab of Universal Access, turn on VoiceOver.  At this point, the computer will start talking, so use headphones if the baby's asleep!
VoiceOver will show an introductory note, and read it to you.  You can just click "Ok".  Now, VoiceOver will tell you whenever the focus moves.  VoiceOver can be tricky in a web browser if you're not used to it, so ignore Safari for this test.  Instead, start a new Mail message, or open Spotlight, or do anything else that will give you a text cursor.  Wait six blinks, and listen to what VoiceOver says when the cursor disappears.  It should briefly describe where the focus has moved to.  For example, if focus moves to the Finder, then it may say something like "Finder, Desktop" and the name of the currently selected file.  If you want more information, you can press Control-Option-F4 (you probably need to hold down Fn as well, since you're on a laptop).  That will make VoiceOver describe what has keyboard focus.  (Control-Option-F3 will give you a little bit different information too.)
You may want to repeat this test a few times with different programs and different windows to see if there's a pattern.  For instance, if focus always moves to the same program regardless of what's open, then that program may be stealing focus.  Once you've got an idea of where focus is going, you can turn off VoiceOver in System Preferences.
While this won't fix your problem, it may provide more information to make it easier to figure out what's going on.

  • Cursor keeps disappearing while using Safari

While using Safari the cursor/arrow will randomly disappear. I have to move the cursor/arrow beyond the Safari page and click on the desktop somewhere to make it reappear. This was happening on my MBP 15" for the last few months, now it is happening on my Mac Pro. Any suggestions on how to fix this?? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Mouse cursor keeps disappearing under 10.7

Ever since I've installed 10.7 I notice that the mouse cursor has a tendency to keep dissappearing in most apps, particularly Safari. For example, like when I click a text box to type an email in Hotmail. The cursor dissappears and only re-appears when I move the mouse to get the cursor out of the program app. But after it reappears, I got back to Safari it gets hidden again. This is very frustrating indeed as I have no idea where the mouse is on the page.
As a matter of fact, as I enter this question in the text box, the cursor has completely dissappeared and only reappears (but then quickly hides again) when I go inside and outside of the text block. I know normally the cursor would dissappear when I started typing, but this happens even when I'm not and I'm shaking the mouse to try to unhide it
However it seems to happen in other apps as well, but is most frequently happening in Safari probably mostly since that is my most common app.

The cursor dissappears whenever you type on the keyboard. It just always happens globally.

  • Mouse cursor keeps disappearing in 10.9

Several times my mouse cursor has just danced off the screen totally, like it has a mind of it's own. Then the screen is frozen, I can't use shortcuts to save and I'm forced to hit the power button to shut down since the keyboard shortcuts won't work. Then when I restart the computer my external drive doesn't show up, so I have to use the the disk utility to repair permissions on my main drive. This iMac is only 2 months old. What is going on with the gremlin cursor. I have the plug-in keyboard and mouse. Don't have a trackpad.

  • Mouse cursor keeps dissapearing ?

help. Mouse cursor keeps disapearing. Renders whole machine useless. Have to do hard re-boot to recover cursor

I have OS X 10.9 (Mavericks), & my cursor has just recently started disappearing!
    This did´nt happen in Lion.
The cursor just goes invisable at random, but mostly when I switch between Tabs mostly when I´m in Safari.
I then swipe to another App (Like Finder or something), then back to Safari & there it is!
I don´t use a mouse but a Trackpad (Not that that should make a difference).
Also the cursor jumps to another position when typing without me even touching the Trackpad.
    Any suggestions?

In the far left hand column, Devices keeps disappearing. I can get it back by downloading iTunes again but disappears again after I run disk utility.

With a Device plugged in - place your mouse cursor over  DEVICES - you should see 'show' or 'hide'. Click on 'show'.

Memory on my macbook air keeps disappearing.  I have 120 gigs and I am down to 150mb without adding any files.

Thanks...I have tried the various options and the only item of interest is that my only account on this computer says it has 102 gig of memory used up.  However, when I open and look at the individual files, they add up to less than 15 gigs.

  • Final cut wont open and keeps disappearing while loading

Since friday, I am trying to open final cut and wont let me, it disappears as soon as it starts loading. I restarted the mac so many times and I have reinstalled final cut and nothing. keeps disappearing.
    any thoughts?

Before the long winded uninstall / reinstall hoopla, did you just try trashing your preferences? Might be all you need. You can do it manually of course but the free Preference Manager tool from Digital Rebellion handles it easily plus allows you to create preference set backups and more : http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm

  • I have OSX 10.5.8 and I keep installing FireFox, but it keep disappearing. When I try to download the newest version, my software isn't compatible because I DON"T have the intel "chip. What can I do to reinstall an older version of Firefox?

Firefox not only disappears from my dock but also from my Applications folder. I tried to downl0ad it again today (5/19/2011), however, it says my system isn't compatible because I don't have an Intel processor. Any suggestions. I have problems with Safari and like to use Firefox but can't if it keeps disappearing and then Mozilla tells me that I can't install after I have already downloaded the application.

For an unofficial Firefox 4 compatible version that runs on Mac OS X 10.4.11 or Mac OS X 10.5.8 (PowerPC) you can look at:

Firefox 3.6.x (Mac OS X 10.4 and later) can be found here:
