My db don't accept "g, a, c etc". How to repair?

I have Oracle8iR2 in Linux/Conectiva6.0 and i am having problems with special characters.
Is there some file that i can modify to my db accept the special chars???
How can i repair this problem???

You should create the database using a character set which supports those characters. Have a look at http://technet.oracle.com/docs/products/oracle8i/doc_library/817_doc/server.817/a76966/toc.htm
