So. The long expected update to 10.5.2 has finally come ... but ... the problem with the disappearing HD on the Desktop and in the Finder is still remaining.
Meanwhile I've tried (almost) everything to make that da.... icon to reappear. Nothing helped so far. I even tried the "chflags nohidden ~/" command suggested by apple. This is really getting annoying. A 400 MB update but no solution to such a minor thing. (Well, or it's a real big thing, because it's still not fixed.)
I helped myself with an Alias of my HD on the Desktop to be able to access it directly. (I can make it visible with TinkerTool, but that doesn't look nice, because you see all hidden files.)
Any other (new) experiences out there?

I have followed all your postings and I am truly amazed at all your Mac “under-the-hood” knowledge and even more impressed by your kindness and patience with novice users as myself.
Your summary about problem with invisible hard disk icons (http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/invisible.html) is the best I found after spending many days looking for a solution.
I also suffer the missing Mac HD icon problem. I temporarily solved it by using your solution #1 (A simple Apple script). However, as noted by other users, the problem returns as soon as I click on the icon. The ls -al@ command in terminal revealed that I do have com.apple.metadata:kMDItemFinderComment 42
Although I have been a Mac User since 1987 I have never used terminal and therefore I am truly intimidated and fearful of doing your suggested next step (deleting the metadata comment). I would much appreciate if you could answer the following before I take the jump:
1. My default “shell” when I open terminal is tcsh and the prompt is % instead of $, does it make any difference if I use tcsh instead of bash? (Sorry if this a silly question, but I just want to make sure.
2. Since the name of my Hard Disk (boot disk) is Mac HD, is the following command to eliminate the metadata correct?
[Macintosh-2:~] myusername% xattr –d com.apple.metadata:kMDItemFinderComment /Volumes/”Mac HD”

Macintosh HD icon missing / not showing up on desktop

Suddenly my boot drive HD (Macintosh HD) icon is missing. In Volumes I can find an alias of my HD but not on my desktop.
I switched the option for "show HD icons on desktop" off and on in Finder options but boot drive not visible while other volumes visibility is switching fine off and on.
I repaired disk permissions but no change.

It can be the bridge. It could need firmware update. or the FW ports may be an issue. LaCie seemed to invent the phrase/tip 'resetting firewire ports' due to the issues with their drive cases.
You can try an SMC Reset.
So far I have avoided name-brand and tend to see them mentioned. Often with a new OS (though you are on 10.6.8, but when 10.6 came out there was a common complaint and thread of users: FW or USB worked but not the other interface).

Why is my image processing time additive when I have it spread to seperate timed structures on a quad-core realtime desktop computer?

I am developing a vision application on a quad-core realtime desktop computer and 2 NI-1430 boards. There are 3 cameras. Each has its own timed structure loop with its own cpu core. We generated the image processing vi's with Vision Assistant. I expected the image processing for each camera to happen in parallel, but the total elapsed time is the same as if the image processing was serial.
Are the Vision Assistant generated vi's not designed for this? Do I have to set some properties to facilitate multi-core processing? For example, do the shared lower-level vi's have to declared re-entrant?

It would be interesting to see your code in 'parallel mode' as opposed to 'serial mode.' In 'serial mode' are you processing the image from one camera and then the other? So, do you actually wire error wires (or other form of execution order control) connecting the processing code from one camera to the processing code of another? How does the processing time of your code compare to processing images from a single camera?

Is there a way to help my desktop computer?

Hi everyone,
My issue is concerning my desktop computer at work. I'm not very technical, so please bare with me.
It's an Apple, Mac desktop computer from anywhere between 2009 to 2011 (I'm not sure how to tell). It's running the Mac OS X version 10.6.8 with a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 of memory.
I thought maybe it was getting slow because it was running out of space, so I purchased a large external hard drive to backup all of my files on. Now I only have current things I need on the computer while everything else remains on the external hard drive. It has up 500 GB of storage with currently 223 GB available.
I've been noticing that the computer has been having trouble over the last few weeks running some programs. I don't use very many programs on here, I tend to stick with the following:
     - Adobe CS6 Master Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and Dream Weaver)
     - Adobe Acrobat Professional
     - iMovie
     - FileZilla
     - Microsoft Word
     - FireFox
     - Safari
I do have many more programs on the computer, but I barely use them (if ever).
It rarely crashes, but I get the "colour/pin wheel of death" a lot, things take forever to open, and/or they just freeze for minutes at a time.
Is there anything I can do to help my poor computer? I love this thing. I would be the best thing in the world if I could help it live a healthy life (lol) . I'm hoping there is something I can do for it.
You guys have really helped me out the last couple of times I had issues. I decided to come here instead of Google because who would know better than the Apple community!

Based on everything you have told us, Without a doubt, you need a lot more RAM installed in your iMac.
OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard can, at times, use up the full 4 GBs of RAM, for. itself, alone.
Your model iMac can take, a total of 16 GBs of RAM.
My advice is to install the max. 16 GBs of RAM.
Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
RAM is user installable and very easy to do for beginning or novice computer users or novice computer upgraders.

New desktop computer for gaming as well as normal stuff

I am looking for a new desktop computer that I could use for gaming--such as League of Legends and anything else I might find in the coming months/years, as well as eventually being able to hook up ps3 games eventually, but probably not right away. I am looking for suggestions on what specific systems to get and/or what specifications for a desktop i should be looking at. I am entirely new at this and could use help from every direction. Any help is appreciated

The biggest things you need to look for are CPU(for gaming and your budget look for Core i7's or AMD x6's), RAM - most gaming computers come with 6-8GB now, and a discrete video card. I am partial to nVidia chips, but an ATI card will work just the same.
As for brand, I prefer ASUS for gaming machines as they do have a gaming line.
Are you going to be looking for a package, monitor, tower, etc? Or do you already have a monitor?

Just at a quick glance, this is a decent system to kinda base what you're looking for off of. The CPU is decent, good amount of RAM. The graphics could be a bit stronger, though you could always upgrade that.

SpyHunter 4 is not working as usual on my desktop computer; Kaspersky Antivirus is not working properly on my laptop. Both changes occured after downloading Firefox 4. What should I do

SpyHunter is set up to run everyday when I turn on my desktop computer. My Desktop runs Windows 5.1. We usually get around 80-100 low level "spy things" that show up and Spy Hunter removes them. Yesterday, after downloading Firefox 4 we got no malware spy hits. Today, we got one, but we got a message that said we had to restart our computer to remove the malware. We restarted and Spy Hunter just wanted to scan again. We stopped the scan.
Kaspersky Antivirus is set up on my laptop (running Windows 7). After I downloaded Firefox 4, I get a message that states that Kaspersky Antivirus is not turned on. When I open the Action Center of Kaspersky, I shows that the Anti-virus protection is turned off. The rest (firewall, updates, spyware protection, internet security settings, account control are all still "on").
I find it really strange and somehow connected to the downloading of Firefox 4 since both my desktop and my laptop now have problems with my SpyHunter and Kaspersky.
Can I, or should I go back to the earlier version? If so, how do I do that?

Some third-party vendors do not update their products until after the release of a new browser. That is a shame in that they could have tested for compatibility during the alpha and beta testing period (about one year in the case of Firefox 4). The third-party vendor/developer is responsible for keeping their product(s) compatible with new browsers.
You will need to contact your third-party vendor and complain as a paying customer who is not getting what they paid for.
Other newly release browsers, not just Firefox 4, are affected:

Of course it always works, what are you talking about.
I appreciate that re-downloading is only available in the US and then only with certain content. However content that cannot be re-downloaded is not offered for purchase on the Apple TV.

Here is the list of AirPrint printers, and you particular printer is not on it. So that means you will need to use the Lexmark app, and print through your computer.
There is a Lexmark guy that hangs around these forums who may chime in with a response as well.

On the Iphone and Apple TV I can connect to Netflix . . . it recognizes me and my account settings . . . and I can veiw all my recent programs and show titles, descriptions, etc.. But when I select one to watch I get a message saying:
"ERROR A PROBLEM OCCURED WHILE PLAYING THIS ITEM. TRY AGAIN LATER, OR SELECT A DIFFERENT ITEM. GO TO WWW.NETFLIX.COM/SUPPORT FOR MORE INFORMATION. (139)
Netflix support say there is nothing wrong on their end . . . that it is an Apple issue. They see the request for the show, the devices are registered . . . but it shows 0 bandwidth to the device.
My Apple TV did this when I first hooked it up a couple of weeks ago. Then after a few days started working with Netflix, for no apparent change . . . now doesn't again for the past couple of days (I think that it auto restarted the other night after a virus scan).
Very frustrating, and driving me nuts! Has anyone else had and been able to resolve this problem?

Troubleshooting
Apple TV2 update one day and netflix is browsing but not launching the actual content (error 139)
Ipad2 (another ios device) forces me to update netflix if I want to use it and I get the same error 139 on it.
**** now I have two not ways not working where prior to some update it was fine.
Nintendo Wii is still working ( mind you running an ancient version of netflix ) Dusted the Wii off and gave it to the kids use. Now they are happy again...
PC is also still working ( using some other flash client ) but that's just of interest, we're not going to be watching tv with that.
My wife's iphone 4s is still working. Odd.. still ios but for somereason I am not forced to update the version. So basically she could mirror stream up to the apple tv with it. Nice feature of Ios5. Later found out it is using 1.4 version of netflix. The most useful thing out of that is that all 3 of the devices are Ios and it was actually the iphone with the 1.4 version of netflix that still worked!
I heard from a friend who was on a different ISP he was still working so I took my appletv2 and ipad2 over to my brothers house who is on that same ISP as my friend and both started working. So the ISP is involved too!
Brought the appletv2 and ipad2 back to my house hoping it would maybe still work. No dice Broken again.
Searched the appstore for a decent packet analyzer and there isn't really anything. I was able to sniff the traffic with my PC and also on my juniper ssg5 confirmed that. Turns out port 80 traffic is actually failing and authorization is not happening. The other clients do not do this...
Asked a buddy from work who used to work at the ISP if he could make a call to some one who might actually know what is going on. He came back pretty quick and said yea they are trying really hard to get the beta patch in from Bluecoat asap.
So knowing that it was actually Netflix that changed when it hit 2.0 and in my case the ISP made the adjustment it's pretty safe to say this issue is going to be ongoing unless netflix changes again the way they authorize for licenses.
So that's the summary of what went right down the troubleshooting path but I'll tell what what didn't
2 calls to Netflix (useless... waste of time... they are too quick to blame anyone but themselves)
1 call to apple support (support call was going to cost more than it cost for me to change ISPs)
2 calls to ISP (through the normal means - regular support number)
So why is this intermittantly working sometimes? If you are lucky enough to authorize to an IP address that is not cached they voila you are going to get an authorization / a license to watch the show. Some people report after defribulating their appletv (reseting, rebooting, dns changes, you name it) they get it working. Over the past month we all seem to have got it working for some period of time only to lose it a day to two later.
It's now been several days since the beta patch to the bluecoat and 4 of us who have been communicating on the issue appear to be online all at the same time for those several days and that is a good sign that we might be out of the woods on the issue.
Hope this turns into something helpful for someone else out there.
