  • Changing desktop pictures locks system preferences

Re MacBook Pro laptop (OS 10.7.5)
Problem: Changing desktop pictures locks System Preferences
If I try to open System Preferences, I get windows for the Change Desktop/Background and the whirling beach ball begins until I go to Activities Monitor to Force Quit System Preferences, which informs me that my "System Preferences is no longer responding."
I have no trouble booting my Mac,
checked my Disk Utility informing me that there are no errors,
    checked Permissions without errors,
went to Users>"my name">Preferences>found the plist for com.apple.systempreferences, moved it to my desktop, tried the Apple System Preferences option with same result. Returned plist .  Hmm, just noticed that I have com.apple.systempreferences with one directly after Library ( i.e., not in any folder), and the other in the Library>Preferences folder. Could that be the foul up?  Perhaps one of these plists is misplaced.
    Any suggestions?

First follow the instructions in this support article.
If an iPhoto or Aperture library is the source of your desktop pictures, it may need to be rebuilt, or you may need to update the application to the latest version.
    Otherwise, continue as below.
    Back up all data.
In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
              Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following item, if it exists:
              Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
and move the following items to the Desktop, if they exist:
              Application Support/Dock/desktoppicture.db
              Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
Launch System Preferences and test. If you still have the issue, put the items you moved to the Desktop back where they came from and post again. Otherwise, delete the items.

  • Problem with remote desktop and lock screen

I know of the easy way to immediately lock a Mac's screen by clicking the menu bar lock icon from KeychainAccess. This works on every system under my control (rMBP running Mavericks, MacMini with 10.5 and Mavericks). However when I control the Macs via Remote Desktop (currently 3.7.2), that lock icon behaviour changes.
Trying to lock a 10.5 system, the screen inside the Remote Desktop window goes black immediately. Moving the mouse activates the password dialog. That is what I want. Doing the same in a remote Mavericks system, the screen goes to a dark blackish semi-transparent state. Moving the mouse immediately restores the normal desktop view, no password asked. Is this a feature or a bug in Remote Desktop? This change in behaviour must have come in around Lion or Mountain Lion.

    Hi
Do you use the Intel Proset Utility to configurate the WLan connection?
Try to configure the WLan using this tool and check if the Wlan would disconnect again.
Im also interesting what Wlan driver did you use?
Did you use one from the Intel page?
If not, check the Intel page for the newest WLan driver version.

  • Desktop Administrator Locked by another user

Lately I have been having a problem making changes to workflow on my primary UCCX 7.0(1)SR3 server. I open desktop administrator and click on "Side A", then login to the desktop administrator site, but each time I get a popup saying that CDA is locked by another user. Am I doing something wrong?

    Hi,
There is a bug opened for this but we are still trying to get a clean set of logs to provide to the development team for root cause.
If the problem is still happening, can you please open a TAC case and complete the following:
    1. Se the WebAdmin debug level to DEBUG and set the files to 10
    2. Set the LRMServer debug level to TRACE and set the files to 10
Try to login to the WebAdmin and get the message that another user is logged in. Wait 15 minutes. Try to navigate to another page like the Enterprise Data Fields page and see if the 'Save' button is activated or if you still get that message.
    Collect the following:
    1. WebAdmin*.dbg from C:\Program Files\Cisco\Desktop\log
    2. LRMServer*.dbg from the same location
    3. WebAdmin*.dbg from C:\Program Files\wfavvid\tomcat_appadmin\logs
Turn the Threshold=OFF for the LRMServer after the test.

  • Desktop is locked.  Denies access to me

I was using my husband's computer and attempted to install some software so my son could use Lego Digital Designer.
The next morning, I turned on the computer and couldn't access anything on the Desktop.
When I click on it, it states that I don't have sufficient access privileges.
My husband is upset and too busy to figure out the problem right now.
What on earth did I do? I can't save anything to the desktop, either.
I would appreciate any suggestions as to what I can do.
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.2)

Open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run the following:
    chmod 700 ~/Desktop/
If this command produces an operation not permitted command, use the following:
    sudo chown shortname ~/Desktop
where shortname is the short name of the account you're logged in as. If running the second command did not allow you to make changes to the desktop, run the first one again.

  • Desktop background locked - help?

For some reason I cannot change my desktop background, and I also cannot use hot corners with my mouse pad anymore. However, the keyboard option F9 for hot corners still works.
When I go through the usual process of changing my desktop background, select a new picture, or select a standard Mac background and put it into the change desktop to this, it doesn't change automatically like it should. My desktop background remains the same.
Does anyone know if there is something on my computer somewhere that I accidentally disabled to make these functions not work?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Hi all,
    Welcome to the Discussions!!
I had a similar issue a while back, which from memory was caused by me trying out the automatic backgrounds that change every few minutes or so. I managed to cure it by simply repairing permissions and then restarting.
You can repair permissions from Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility, then choose your Hard Drive and click "Repair Permissions."
If you've already tried this without success, I unfortunately can't offer any more suggestions.

  • Windows 7 desktop locks after 10 minutes idle - Policy setting?

Is there a policy setting to lock the desktop after a certain amount of idle time?  I can't seem to find one, and searches on the web only seem to uncover lock up issues with software, rather than security policy settings.
Right now our Win 7 desktops lock after 10 minutes of inactivity (set by old IT staffer who is no longer here).  This is way too short and we need to change it.  However, I can't find where the setting is.  The screensaver is disabled and the power settings are set to maximum.  The only policy setting that looks like it could be what I'm looking for is "Microsoft network server: Amount of idle time required before suspending session", but that wasn't set to 10.  I went and set it to 0 anyway and the desktop still locks after 10 mins.
Can someone point me in the right direction for this setting?
    Thanks!

When you leave your computer, it’s best to start a screensaver that can only be turned off with a password.
On the Start menu, click Control
    Panel.
Click Personalization, and then click Screen
    Saver.
In the Wait box, choose 15 minutes
    (or less)
Click On resume, display logon screen, and then click OK.
just try reverse , it may work !!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

  • C7: screen lock shortcut on desktop

    Hi,
How can I create an shortcut icon on desktop to lock the screen ?
I want to lock the screen using touch capabilities, in the same way I unlock it.

You could report the issue to Apple by sending feedback.
You could try using a faster loading screen saver like Spectrum or "computer name." Another option might be to use sleep screen instead of screen saver. (System Preferences, Energy Saver, Display Sleep) I

  • My Desktop folder is locked. What should I do?

Yesterday I saw something very strange on my Mac. When I tried to capture the screen using Screen Capture feature of OS X ML, the sound of capturing was heared, but no new file was created on the desktop (Desktop is always the defaul folder for saving the captured images.). Or if I tried to move a file from Desktop to the Trash, a messsage appears on the screen: "You must enter your password to compolete this action.". I entered my password, the sound of moving an item to the Trash was heared, but the file remained in place, and Trash was still empty.
I tried this several times, untill I got my desktop is locked. Now what should I do?

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Windows 8.1 Lock Screen drops network connectivity when screen locked using Win+L

    Hi!
I was sent here from Microsoft Community forum. The question is:
Since Windows NT 4.0 I'm using Lock Screen to prevent people from accessing my computer when I'm leaving my room. First I was using CTRL+ALT+DEL / Lock Screen, then switched to Win+L keyboard shortcut when it was first introduced.
Everything was fine until I switched to Windows 8.1 computer (Sony Vaio Duo 13 with Broadcom wireless network controller). This machine is 8.1, not 8.0 upgraded to 8.1.
My problem is that when I hit Win+L combo the Lock Screen (with clock etc.) is displayed. Then, despite I have configured not to turn off display, the screen goes blank (after 30 seconds since lock) and network connectivity is cut off from desktop
apps (I suspect the system goes into Active Standby mode, because Modern UI apps like Tune-In radio keep working fine).
    100% repeatable scenarios:
    ## Scenario 1 ##
    1) Log in
    2) Open desktop app that uses network connectivity. Outlook 2013 from Office365 subscription
    3) Check that it has connected
    4) Lock screen (Win+L)
    5) Wait for 30 seconds (first incorrectly posted as few minutes) as screen goes black
    6) Unlock screen (using password)
    7) In right corner of Outlook app you will see "Unable to connect with Exchange server" and few seconds later it will reconnect sucessfuly
    ## Scenario 2 - the more annoying ##
    1) Log in to Win 8.1 computer
    2) Connect to it using SMB (in my case I wanted to transfer 30 GB of files from local hard drive C: to server) \\COMPUTER-NAME\c$ from Windows Server 2012 R2
    3) Start copying files from computer to server
    4) Lock the screen on computer
    5) As soon as screen goes black server displays message "Lost connection to the resource. Try again?"
    6) Unlock screen on the computer
    7) Click "Try again" and it will continue copying files
My power settings are set to go into stand by after 5 hours and if I not lock the screen it doesn't go to sleep before 5 hours.
When I lock the screen using Win+L it goes into (probably Active) Standby mode.
Is there any way to prevent it from going to Active Standby when locking screen? I need the screen lock for security reasons but I don't want it to drop my network connectivity on remote desktops, file transfers and other desktop activities before 5 hour
    timeout.
This issue is not related to more or less known wireless network connectivity problem that happens to many Intel Haswell computers. Mine doesn't exhibit those problems. I can easly push 100 - 200 GB of wireless data without network drops.

    Best regards,
    Sergiusz

Same issue here using Surface 3 Pro with either internal WLAN or MS USB LAN Adapter. I'm frequently used to keep open connections over SSH to some servers. On switching to lock screen explicitly by pressing Win+L or implicitly due to idle timeout all
connections to servers are lost. In addition, I don't get any notifications on incoming Skype messages (using Skype for desktop) when lock screen is active.
Neither NIC is showing "Power Management Tab" according to step 5 of instructions above.
Additionally observing USB LAN NIC seems to be kept active after activating lock screen, but traffic stops (according to its flashing light) when lock screen is switching off display. Blanking display doesn't seem to be adjustable in System Settings (Energy
    Options accessed through Win+X).
Find attached log file of powercfg -energy -duration 300 ...
Log file is in German. It basically claims unset timeouts for deactivating display while running attached to power supply though lock screen is turning off displays within 1-2 minutes.

  • XFCE/Xscreensaver not locking on hibernate

I have XFCE and installed xscreensaver. My screen locks like it is supposed to when suspend, so I need to enter my password on resume. However when I resume from hibernate it goes straight back to my desktop, no locked screen. Anyway to make this work? I want my screen to be locked when I hibernate.
In XFCE power manager I already have "Lock screen when going for suspend/hibernate" checked.

    Hi scorpyn,
Yes xscreensaver locks the screen and pm-utils works very well.
I believe that the problem is that the Logout dialog when I select Suspend or Hibernate, not locking the screen before doing the actions.
Or it not honours the setting in the Xfce Power Manager Preferences: Lock the screen when going for suspend/hibernate.
    Thanks,

  • Windows PC Desktop will not close or exit.

Have finaly got backup and connect problems ironed out (minor) however now when I try to exit desktop it locks up and I have to exit via task manager.
I have timed it and waited 34 minutes today.
Have cleaned out any traces after an uninstall ,then reinstalled and still no joy.
Will post another for the following but it also locks machine at 100% cpu and 90% memory on a six core,12gb memory machine when in use.
    Any sugesttions?

Try to start Firefox in [[Safe mode|Safe mode]]. This mode disables all extensions, user customizations, hardware acceleration, etc. temporarily for diagnostic and troubleshooting. If Firefox works fine in Safe Mode, then this is likely an add-on issue. Restart Firefox in normal mode, then type "About:addons" (without the quotes) in the address bar. Disable your extensions one by one, restarting Firefox between each one, until you find the trouble maker. Once you do, you can disable that add-on and report the issue to that add-on's developer.
A few other basic trouble shooting things you can try is this:
Run all Windows Updates, install all needed service packs, etc.
Update your graphics driver (Firefox uses your graphics card for some rendering, and an out of date graphics card driver can cause problems. [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-upgrade-my-graphics-drivers https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-upgrade-my-graphics-drivers].
Download and Install MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, run a full Scan. [http://www.malwarebytes.org/ http://www.malwarebytes.org/]. This helps check that there are no viruses on your computer causing issues. You can uninstall this program after you clean off any infections.
