My Desktop is missing!

That's the latest. When I boot up, there's nothing on the Desktop. I can open the Desktop folder, though. I just can't see anything on my Desktop except the background. Not even my Hard Drive icon.

Okay, the good news first. I now have all of the sidebars available. Before I just had Hard Drive and Network. For some reason, the others were unchecked (there was actually a horizontal line across a few of them (?)).
I've checked out what was suggested. I couldn't find what Kappy was mentioning about the home thing in Users. What I found with that name was a gif.
Right now, if I'm using Safari, I can't just click outside the window and see the menu for the Finder. I have to physically open a folder to switch to Finder.
Again, there is nothing on my desktop, including the Hard Drive icon. I'm thinking this all may have something to do with the programs I ran to free up space the other day. There were a bunch I downloaded and used from Low End Mac. I now have almost 4 GB free, as opposed to 1.5 a few days ago.
I'll try to find the names of the applications I ran. Maybe it will help.
Thanks,
Allan

  • Windows 7 Desktop is missing.

    Hello.
So I built my computer at the end of last year, and my SSD was shipped FIRST, and by mistake, I installed that first, before my secondary drive, which is a 3Tb drive. Fast forward to today. I am running out of space,
and I come up with an idea, that proves to be a wrong one eventually, I copy pretty much everything from C: to my secondary, and delete the rest from C:. Now, when I try to install something, it's missing. And I further find out that in Windows Explorer, my
desktop is missing from the left side.
The only things left in my C: drive are Program Files, then the x86, Users, and Windows. I made a horrible mistake, what should I do?
BTW, I tried system restore, yet the only time I can restore is today, which isn't any help.

get another hard disk and install windows clean, then slave the old disk with usb and recover your files

  • OEL-5 finally released but with many desktop packages missing

    Hi,
OEL-5 GA has just been released but with many client (desktop) packages missing (as opposed to CENTOS-5 where all RHEL-5 categories are bundled into only one distribution). Namely, three months ago RHEL-5 has been released in three basic categories:
    1. Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop
    2. Red Hat Enterprise Linux
    3. Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Platform
The complete souce code for these distributions resides in two Red Hat ftp directories: "5Client" and "5Server" with different contents. It seems that OEL-5 GA includes only packages from "5Server" directory. So, many important applications are missing:
    - openoffice.org
    - kdepim (kmail, knode etc)
    - thunderbird
    - fribidi
    - gaim
    - k3b
    etc.
I'm little confused, since it would be very stupid to have to download those packages from CENTOS-5 or self-compiling them from Red Hat source rpm download site.
    N.J.

    Thanks a lot Wim.
Yes I know, the problem didn't exist in RHEL-4/OEL-4, since AS was superset of ES, WS and Desktop. Unfortunatelly, It's not the case in version 5 where client version includes many packages that are missing in server version and vice versa. To avoid complications with new subscription channels, I would suggest the simplest and the most logical solution: all three categories BUNDLED in single distribution OEL-5 GA and only one subscription channel, just like CENTOS-5 (six CD ISOs).
    Regards
    N.J.

  • A folder on my desktop is missing, when I search for files in the folder nothing comes up...

a folder  on my desktop is missing, when I search for files that are in the folder nothing comes up!  There are no items in my trash! please help!!!!

Well, now you know why you should have backed your data up. There are two kinds of computer users: those who have accidentally deleted important data in the past, and those who will do so in the future. You've just switched groups. If your data isn't backed up, it will all be lost sooner or later to boneheaded mistakes or hard drive failure. The only question is when. Good backups are cheap insurance against that day.
Now that those files have been deleted, you'll have to use data recovery software to try to salvage them, assuming the space they occupied on your hard drive hasn't yet been overwritten (a pretty good bet if they were still visible yesterday and you STOP using your computer now, to avoid overwriting them before you recover them). To do so you'll need an external hard drive and one of the following recovery utilities:
    Data Rescue 3: http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
    FileSalvage 7: http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id= 1
Both are offered in demo versions that will show you what the full version could recover before you have to pay for anything.

  • Desktop is missing and can't open finder since upgrading to 10.9.5

Since upgrading to OS 10.9.5 my desktop is missing (no drives or files) and I can't open finder or empty trash. I can only access programs in the dock. I tried zapping the PRAM and it fixed it but the next time I restarted same problem.
    iMac computer

    You might have corrupt .plists.
    Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist and com.apple.desktop.plist.  Move the .plists to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by restarting the computer and test. If it works okay, delete the plists from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plists to where you got it  from, overwriting the newer one.

  • Open app in current space/desktop option missing

After upgrading to Yosemite I now no longer have the option from the task bar -> app -> options -> This Desktop or Desktop on Display [#].  It looks like this option is SUPPOSED to still be available on Yosemite: OS X Yosemite: Work in multiple spaces
Every time I restart my spaces are all moved around and some, not all, of my apps open in different spaces.
I'd like to get organized again.  Am I missing something?

  • Macintosh HD desktop logo missing

    Hi
I visited the genius bar this morning re a problem file on my new Mac Pro running 10.9.3
I was was told to create a new user with admin privileges and then use migration assistant to bring in all the files from Time Machine apart from the system files
I created a new user with admin privileges ok but when I logged onto this I found the Macintosh HD logo is missing from the desktop and when I try using Finder it can't locate migration assistant
Anyone have any suggestions as to what is wrong?
The old accounts have the logo in place (there were migrated from Time Machine a few days ago)
    Thanks

    1. Choose Preferences from the Finder menu, click on the General tab, and check the box for hard disks.
    2. Choose Utilities from the Finder's Go menu and open the Migration Assistant.

  • Mavericks desktop unresponsive, missing icons

My Mavericks desktop has all of a sudden become unresponsive and all the icons are missing though I can see them in Finder. I can't drag any files to the desktop. Can't copy/paste. I can't even right click to bring up the context menu or even drag out a selection box. It's completely blank other than my wallpaper and won't do anything.
    I'm on 10.9.5.
I don't know if this is related but I recently made an Automator script I found online to show/hide invisible files because I needed it. This is the shell script that runs:
    is_shown=$(defaults read com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles)
    if [ $is_shown != "TRUE" ]
    then
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
    else
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
    fi
I did it once to show and once to hide. I did this yesterday but only noticed this issue today. I'm pretty sure it was working fine yesterday after this and this morning.
I have restarted my computer several times and it still doesn't work. I also found this other solution to run this in Terminal but it didn't work:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
    What can i do??

    Do a backup.

  • Desktop files missing after Mountain Lion update.

    Hi All,
I work in a research lab at a University, and we ran an update on one of our lab computers [previously on 10.7.4]. Upon updating the OS to Mountain Lion, all of my files were fine, with the exception of the files on the desktop.
On the HD, there was the newly selected user name [BlankenshipLab], and the old username, which said [JB(deleted)]. I could look into the (deleted) folder, and see subfolders for Desktop, Documents, Movies, etc., etc. But, I couldn't access them, as it said I didn't have permissions. As such, I rooted the new user, and I used the sudo chown -R blankshiplab:staff /Users/JB/Desktop. I used this command on all other subvolumes. When I gained access, the desktop folder, was empty, however. There were old files in the documents and downloads folder that weren't there before, either.
If anyone could help us recover the missing files, it would be greatly appreciated!
    Best,

Hi no real idea on this, but many Network connectivity issues have been solved by this...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
    Also, turn off IPv6:
    System Preferences » Network » AirPort » TCP/IP tab » Configure IPv6
    Or whatever Interface you use.

  • All desktop items missing, even with 2 monitors!

When I turn my Power Mac G3 on, all my desktop items are missing.. everything. I thought that the monitor setting got changed to "2 monitors" and the desktop items were set to be on the other monitor, so I hooked up a second one, but I'm still missing everithing. You can see the end of some of the desktop items on the edge of the monitor, but I can't grab them or move them. I tried to restart from the OS install CD but I can't see anything to be able to access any of the windows or the top bar. Is there a way of reseting this so I can see again? BTW, when I click on the monitor, I get a beep sound... I guess there is a window open waiting for a command or something. Also, the monitors are working because I'm able to see my wallpaper!

ok! so here is the recap! (and forgive me I don't know the proper names of things!): The main monitor input (motherboard) failed, so I had put in two monitor cards in the 2 out of 3 slots available in the G3. After trying all of you suggestions (zapping the PRAM several times, switching cards, and switching monitors), last night I took both cards out and placed one of them in the slot that was empty before.... that worked! I can see all of my desktop items and menu bar, software, tested everithing, all great...
Now there is one more thing; the computer still thinks there are 2 monitors hooked up. My mouse gets lost (because it goes to the "second" monitor, apparently), and when I go to my Monitor Settings, it shows that I have two monitors connected. The only other thing I can think of is that its still counting the "main" monitor input as one of the active ones, even though there isn't a monitor plugged in there. Now it makes me think that the original problem was that, and when I had 2 monitors conected the computer thought I had 3!
The question now is, is there a way of disabling the "main" monitor input so that the computer wont read it as an active one?
Sorry, I hope this makes a little sense...
and thanks again for your suggestions!

  • Muse desktop content missing

I started to create a phone layout for my website and now my desktop content is missing. The only thing showing up now is my master page. When I open my muse site, I can see the content for a moment in Plan mode, but then it disappears.

    Good morning, Vikas,
I tried what I think you are suggesting
    and got this
even though it is a text box using Times New Roman font and even tried a new text box with only the words I want to hyperlink with Arial font, but get the same message, and still does not make the “hyperlink” field option available; have to use this
This is frustrating.  I’ve used Dreamweaver and know how to do intermediate html coding, is there any way to get to the source code for these pages to make this change backstage?
Thanks in advance for your assistance to resolve this.
