My dictionary won't learn!

Transferred Appleworks 6.2.9 to new Intel iMac. Now, when using Spell Check, the "Learn" button is dimmed, all previously 'learned' words are gone, and I am unable to save any new words that the dictionary doesn't recognize. Any advice would be appreciated.
Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Does it work with
both the main dictionary AND the User one? It appears
you must choose one or the other.
A User Dictionary is the only type of dictionary that you can edit (ie. that can 'learn'). Main (spelling) dictionaries, Hyphenation dictionaries and Thesauri are all Read Only.
Actually, you choose one THEN the other. AppleWorks can have ONE active dictionary of EACH type at any time. For checking spelling, AppleWorks uses the ACTIVE Main Dictionary and the ACTIVE User dictionary.
For automatic hyphenation, AppleWorks uses the ACTIVE Hyphenation dictionary.
To search for synonyms (and for meanings), AppleWorks uses the ACTIVE Thesaurus.
You make a dictionary ACTIVE by SELECTing it. When you go to the SELECT Dictionaries dialogue, AppleWorks asks you, using a set of Radio Buttons, which type of dictionary you want to select.
Click the Main Dictionary button, and AppleWorks shows you, in the small window at the bottom of the dialogue window, which Main Dictionary is currently selected (ie. ACTIVE). If that is the Main Dictionary you want, go on to the next Radio Button. If you want to use a different Main Dictionary, click Choose.
Clicking Choose takes you to the Dictionaries folder (in AppleWorks Essentials), and shows a list of all the dictionaries you have Installed in that folder. If Main Dictionaries was the selected Radio Button when you clicked Choose, Main dictionaries will be shown in black type; other types of dictionaries will be greyed (and can't be selected). Click on the one you want to use, then click Select. You'll be returned to the Select Dictionaries dialogue, and your newly selected Main Dictionary will be shown as the Currently Selected Dictionary.
If you also want to change the selected dictionary of another type, click the Radio Button for that type, and follow the steps above. Changing the User Dictionary does NOT affect the Main Dictionary choice.
My iBook said it had no User Dic. so I selected one
and now Learn (which was greyed out - unlike on the
iMac) is working fine. But that didn't work on my
iMac - (same OS & version of AppleWorks)
Does your iMac tell you that you have a User Dictionary selected?
Have you trashed AppleWorks's preferences (see Peggy's User
tip AppleWorks has stopped working correctly)?
Have you checked permissions on the User Dictionary? If you are the Owner of the file, you should have Read and Write permission. If other users also use AppleWorks on this machine, or if you do through another log in account, then Others should also be able to read & write. To check permissions, find the User Dictionary file in AppleWorks Essentials, click it once, and press command-I to Get Info.
If none of the above appear to be the reason for the problem, I'd suggest Exporting the contents of your User dictionary to a Text file, creating a New User dictionary, ande importing the Text file into the new User dictionary. Then choose this new file as your User dictionary.
If that solves the problem, delete the original User Dictionary file.

Barry

  • Iweb won't learn new spellings

this, strangely, is a problem i've had before
    iweb won't learn new spellings
when i have a word it doesn't know, i right click and say learn
everything is fine, the red underlines go away
until i close iweb and open it back up again
it forgets every word its learnt and the red underlines come back
its not a huge problem, but just annoying
    any ideas?

Double check Edit > Spelling to make sure the Dictionary is the same when you learn the word and when you reopen iweb.

  • Spellcheck - won't learn a name - always autocorrects it!

How can I make my iPad "learn" a word that it persistently tries to autocorrect? The word happens to be a person's first name. I don't see any way to tell iPad to add a word to its dictionary. Is there?
Update: this name is in the Contacts, and I have gone into Notepad and typed the name and then the 'x' (over and over) in an attempt to "teach" iPad this word. But it just won't learn. How can I force it to learn?

I have this same problem, for my own name.
I've typed my name hundreds of times on my iPad in emails, on web sites, and in notepad, and I reject the auto correct pretty much every time (I missed a few when I first got the iPad). The iPad just won't accept my spelling.
I even tried the bizarre suggestion above (removing the notepad icon from the multitasking bar after typing my name and rejecting the auto correct 50 times). iPad still won't leave my name alone.
Anybody ever successfully deal with this issue?

  • Spelling won't learn

I have Pages '09 (Version 4.0.5). The Spelling function of Edit won't "learn" words I use purposely, such as surnames. This is tremendous irritation, as I am a writer and my character names keep appearing as misspellings. Unlike MS Word, Pages has no "Ignore Always" function, so I must keep pressing Ignore over and over again. I've looked in the "en" list (Library-->Spelling) and the words I specify to learn are there. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have English set as the language for the document?

  • IPhone dictionary won't recognize a word I've used a million times...

so from one day to the next my iPhone decided not to make the auto correction on the word "I'm" anymore...I used to simply type "im" and it would change it to "I'm". Now it won't anymore! I've tried resetting the dictionary Settings>General>>Reset>Reset Keyboard Dictionary (twice) and it still won't work.
Does anybody have any suggestions on what I can do to get this issue resolved?

Haven't heard back from them. Took it the adapter to the Apple Store with one of the mics and the Blue Shirts said it was the proper adapter.

  • Appleworks often quits with spellchecker, won't learn new words

My Appleworks program is acting up. It often quits when I use the spell checker for the first time on a document, but is stable after I reopen the program and choose the spell checker again. However, the spell checker no longer learns words it doesn't recognize. The <LEARN> button is grayed out. I installed version 6.2.4 on my new MacBook in February from an old eMac applications disk, then upgraded to 6.2.9 some months later. I didn't have these problems at first, but they have cropped up in recent months, perhaps after installing the upgrade, although I'm not sure. I uninstalled and reinstalled Appleworks today from the eMac Apps disk and upgraded to 6.2.9 again, but still have these issues. The <LEARN> button was also grayed out on the 6.2.4 version today before I upgraded. I'd appreciate help in solving this matter. Thanx in advance.

Whenever you do an update, it's a good idea to do two maintenance tasks, one for the system (Repair Permissions) and one for AppleWorks (delete preferences). (Thanks to Barry for this way to format this very common answer.)
To Repair permissions, launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, click on First Aid, then on Repair Permissions.
To delete AppleWorks’ preference files, go to HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Find and open the folder AppleWorks in this Preferences folder, then delete all of the enclosed files (with the exception of the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars). AppleWorks will recreate the preference files as it needs them. This is also the best first-step in troubleshooting.
As for the dictionary "problem," you probably haven't "told" AppleWorks where the dictionary is. With a word processing document open, go to Edit > Writing Tools -> Select Dictionaries... > click "Main Dictionary" (if it isn't already clicked) > Choose > & navigate to the dictionary which should be in HD > Applications > AppleWorks 6 > AppleWorks Essentials > Dictionaries. The same process is used to create a user dictionary. Click "User Dictionary" then click "New" -> Save.

  • Spell Check won't "learn."

Appleworks 6.2.9. When I run a spelling check the "learn" option is gray, so I can't add new words or names, etc. to the dictionary. I've look at AW preferences and there is no place to change the setting. How do I change that setting? Thanks in advance for your help.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
It's not a preference setting. You probably don't have a User Dictionary selected. Before AppleWorks can "learn" new words you need to create a User Dictionary. With a WP document open, go to Edit/Writing Tools -> Select Dictionaries... Click "User Dictionary" then click "New" -> Save.

  • Dictionary won't work

Whenever i try to open Dictionary, a question mark appears over the icon in the dock, and nothing happens. I had to delete my preferences, would that have made it not work? I think i may have accidentally deleted the application. Can someone tell me where I can redownload it, or tell me how to make it open. Thanks a lot.

Did you accidently erase the Dictionary Application?
If not, try opening it in the application folder. It worked for me when Safari wouldn't open.

  • Proximity Dictionary won't install - CS4

    Hi,
I recently moved my Adobe Design Premium CS4 installation from an XP machine to my new Win7 machine. The Proximity dictionary seems to have failed to install because files that referenced it that worked fine on my old machine are giving me
Here is what happens on my new installation that I need to repair:
    1. When I start InDesign, I get this message:
    The procedure entry point
?CreateUserDictionary@LinguisticManager@devtech@@QAEPAVIDictionary@2@ABVLM_FileSpec@2@ABVL M_UniString@2@G@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library AdobeLinguistic.dll.
    2. Upon opening one of my files that worked fine on my other computer's installation of CS4, I get these messages:
    Missing Plug-ins
    LILO.APLN
The document "filename" uses one or more plug-ins which are not currently available on your system. Do you want to open anyway?
    ...and...
Hyphenation breaks may change if you edit the text in this document.
The following hyphenation services are not installed on this system - Proximity (English: USA)
Considering that CS4 works fine on my old machine, I tried reinstalling a couple times to no avail. For whatever reason the dictionaries that were on my old machine do not install on my new machine, and I can't seem to get any dictionary to install on my new machine from the files I have, making the spell-check function worthless. Did Adobe quit supplying spelling dictionaries with their product at some point? Is it a Windows 7 thing? What the heck is LILO.APLN...I didn't even realize I was using this plug-in.
I am in the middle of a huge project and do not want to upgrade to CS5 in the middle of it, so assume that is not an option.
I can get around the LILO thing... But I need my spelling dictionaries. Anyone? Thanks. -Cal

After posting, I tried exporting one of my files to .INX and reopening the .INX file in InDesign. That was successful in getting rid of the LILO error for that file. Also, the hyphenation error did not recur (and the non-existent Proximity dictionary was removed from the list of dictionary options), however, there is no dictionary in my InDesign installation, so I am still unable to spell check.
Considering that this experiment made the Lilo error go away, do you still think I should follow the directions from your post?
Some additional notes about my installation...
On the XP machine, the initial installation was CS2, which was upgraded to CS3 and then CS4. On the Win7 machine, I installed straight from the CS4 files I downloaded when I purchased the upgrade. My files could have been referencing a plugin and dictionary from CS2 or CS3 on my old machine, but I still don't know why a dictionary wouldn't install on my fresh CS4 install in Win7.
    Thanks,
    Cal

You ran a defective third-party "utility" such as "CleanMyMac" that purports to "clean up" "junk" files. What it really does is to corrupt the operating system.
The first thing you need to do is remove that software according to the developer's instructions. Never install it, or anything like it, again. Then see below.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

  • I created a new Apple ID and now my iphone won't learn it /update itself.

    Hello everyone.
I recently created a new Apple ID (new passwort, new mail adress etc) and now my iphone does not want to update itself and "learn" the new one.
When I want to download apps etc a popup appears, asking me for verification in terms of typing in the password, but still with my old ID.
    Can anybody help me?
    Thanks

Settings>iTunes/App Store...tap the ID shown...sign out...now sign back in with your new ID. You'll have to delete your old iCloud account...Settings>iCloud...scroll down...delete account. Then setup again with your new ID.

  • Spelling - won't learn spelling of new words

I can't seem to get Pages to let me tell the spelling process to learn new words. If I select a word that is marked as misspelled, and then select "learn spelling" (which is active, not grayed out), the word is not learned.
I have also tested to see if I can have spelling learn the same word by using a different app (in this case VoodooPad). It works. Then if I go back to Pages and refresh the window, the word is no longer marked as misspelled.
If anyone has any hints as to how to fix this, I'd be happy to find out!

It sounds like a similar problem I experienced before where TREX would not search through the content on any of my News or FAQ items.  But like you said I could search on the title and it would pick that up.
The solution for my issue was the following:
Reduce the Max Transfer Size to 0
System Configuration > KM > Configuration > Global Services > Index Management Service

  • Dictionary won't open in 10.5.2

I just updated to 10.5.2, and went to look up a word from Safari only to notice it keeps crashing and never opening. Anyone else getting this?

Chase, I can say I don't have this problem. The usual suggestions are to:
    1) run Software Update again and instal any additional updates
    2) run Disk Utility (in Utilities folder within Applications folder) and do a permissions repair
    3) download the 10.5.2 combo update and run this and again repair permissions. The combo update includes earlier updates and often solves problems with updates. It seems to be 'more reliable' than Software Update for some people.
and check after each step to see whether the problem is resolved in which case you can smile again and not worry about the remaining steps too much!
There are further steps if these don't work:
    4) restart while holding the Option, Command(Apple), P & R keys until you hear at least 2 chimes before releasing them (to reset PRAM). After this you may need to reset time & date and other personal settings you have.
Report back about how you go and if a particular step produces the solution mention this for the benefit of others, then mark your query as 'answered'.
