My disc drive is making a terrible whiring sound.  Is there anything I can do about it?

My opticle drive is making a terrible noise.  It has just started and sounds as if it is trying to spin but grating.  When I switch on it is ok for about 10 minutes and then starts up without stopping until I shut down.  The Imac is just over 12 months old.

If the drive scratches discs or it simply stops working, it can be replaced. Replacement drives are not terribly expensive.

  • I tried to update my macbook pro, the screen is now frozen. My track pad hasn't been working for awhile and my disc drive is broken. IS there anything that can be done without buying a new laptop. It was bought in 2009

My track pad has not been working properly for awhile and my disc drive it damaged. I went to update my macbook pro to maveric and it is now frozen and not allowing me to click anything. Is there anything that can be done to fix this without buying a new one? Its from early 2009

    ShelbyMackenzieLynne,
when you say that your disc drive is damaged, do you mean your MacBook Pro’s hard disk drive, or do you mean its SuperDrive (the CD/DVD drive)?
When you’d updated your MacBook Pro to Mavericks, did the installation succeed, and subsequently freeze up? Or did it freeze up during the Mavericks installation?
Which version of OS X was installed on your MacBook Pro before you’d installed Mavericks?
Are you currently able to boot into the Mavericks recovery partition? To see if you can do so, hold down a Command key and the R key while starting up your MacBook Pro.

  • I tried to instal lion but my iMac says "install fail because hard drive is damaged and can't be repaired" and my only option is to restart and it immediately tries to download it again, won't let me back to any other screen.  Is there anything I can do?

I am trying to install Lion and I keep getting a fail message that says "Mac OS X could not be installed because the disk Hard Drive is damaged and can't be repaired". It only gives me the option to restart to try again but fails every time, an no other option.   Is there anything I can do?

I'll guess that you're upgrading from Snow Leopard? You should be able to start using your original install dvd by inserting the disc and restarting while holding the C key. Run Disk Utility from your install disc  and try to repair the drive. Then try the upgrade again.

My MacBook Pro died suddenly when I was removing a flash drive (LG up3 neon ps4) and is now both unresponsive and cannot be charged. Troubleshooting.... Is there anything I can do to fix it on my own? (There aren't any apple stores in my current country)

    Hello antol1n1,
Sorry to hear your MacBook Pro is not charging or powering on.  Sometimes a System Management Controller reset can help with the following charging and power issues:
    Power
The computer doesn't respond to the power button when pressed.
A portable Mac doesn't appear to respond properly when you close or open the lid.
The computer sleeps or shuts down unexpectedly.
The battery does not appear to be charging properly.
The MagSafe power adaptor LED doesn't appear to indicate the correct activity.
To reset the System Management Controller on your MacBook Pro (with a built-in battery) , you can follow these steps:
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
You can find more information in the full article here:

It is not showing on the Desktop or the left colomn of Finder (Set to do both in Finder Prefernces) and is not showing up under the Disk application under Utilities (Sorry can't remember the name off the top of my head!)

You should be able to read NTFS formatted drives, just not write to them. For that matter, USB Flash drives generally come formatted NTFS for use with PC's and they have to be able to mount on a Mac in order to reformat them for Mac use. The Windows utilities supplied on those Flash drives will be deleted when the drive is reformatted for Mac use so I routinely copy them to the Mac desktop first before reformatting.
You might look into something like this http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/U3NVSPATA/ if the enclosure is an issue. It looks weird but it works.

  • I just brought my MacPro in for service and they replaced my hard drive. However, now my disc drive has suddenly stopped working! Is there anything I can do to fix this without having to take it back in for service, again!?

The nearest service center is 2 hours from my house and my computer isn't under warranty anymore, so I need alternative options. I'm just frustrated that my disc drive was totally fine until AFTER I took it in for service. I just paid a lot of money for a new hard drive from the apple store and now my disc drive has suddenly stopped working correctly. I tried with multiple CD's and DVD's...loading a disc, but my computer would just make a weird loading noise and then eject the discs. Now it has started fighting taking the disc, so I have stopped trying. Is there anyway to fix this problem without taking it in for service again and paying another boat load of money?
Thanks in advance for your help!

  • My computer is making a terrible whirring sound.  I don't know why....?

Hello! My computer is making a terrbile whirring sound, and I don't know why....?  I checked the CPU%, and there was nothing over 10%!  I am in confused on why the noise randomly starts up, and then stops.....  Can anybody help?
    Thank you!

Good, open Time Machine and make sure that it is up to date (it should be) and then go to the Apple Store and have them diagnose what is making the noise.
(I assume here that Time Machine is backing up to an external drive)

  • TS1600 I received a 2008 Imac with erased hard drive.  I have the two discs to install OS X but when it tries to boot just  comes up Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer. Is there anything I can do to get this running

I rceived a 2008 Imac with erased hard drive.  They gave me the two install discs but it keeps coming up cannot install OS X on this computer.
Is there anything to do. Thanks hopefully

Well, Apple would probably point out that what you are trying to do violates the EULA.
Technically speaking, however, the issue is that the install/restore DVDs that ship with Macs do not carry all the drivers, or even all of the various versions of libraries that support all of the various models of Macs. The come-with-your-Mac disks are different than the retail versions of the OS (also, the come-with-your-Mac ones bundle iLife, which the retail ones don't).
Because the come-with-your-Mac disk contains only the drivers specific to that generation and model line of Mac, it contains a stub of code that verifies that your hardware matches the driver set on the install/restore DVD.
Your friend has a different model of Mac, with different hardware, so her install/restore disk won't work in yours. Solution: go get the retail boxed version of Leopard.

  • Is there anything I can do short of reformatting the external hard drive?

After 5 years of good service my external hard drive isn't working right with Time Machine.  Here's the note I sent to a an AppleCare person I talked to this afternoon:
Disk Utility couldn't repair the disk.
    I got red messages:
Incorrect number of file hard links
    Invalid catalog record type
The volume OWC Mercury Elite AL Pro couldn't be verified completely.
After I rebooted using my hard drive it didn't even appear as a disk under the 1.5 TB OEM firewire line and I had to reset it again like we did before by pulling the plug for 30 seconds.
Okay, is there anything else I can do to short of reformatting the disk?
If not, how do I reformat it?
During the phone conversation he seemed certain that reformatting and losing 5 years of Time Machine backups would be the only solution if Disk Utility wouldn't repair the external drive, but is there anything else I might try?
    I'm using OS 10.6.8 a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac.
    Thanks!

    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
If you are preparing an external or a non-startup drive, then open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • Hi, I previously used a PC with the purchased Adobe Creative Suite 6, but it is a disk drive, and I need it for my Macbook Pro. Is there anything I can do?

Hi, I purchased the Adobe Creative Suite 6 on my student pricing for $399. I only had a PC at the time so i've purchased a disk drive PC version. As a student in the Graphic Design industry I've been urged to become a Mac user, thus I now own a Macbook, but cannot use my Adobe programs. Is there someway I can change the license for the PC suite to Mac? It's quite expensive, and a waste of $400 to keep in on a PC I don't use.

    Hello genehusky,
Please review the following to see if we can resolve this clicking noise:
    1.  Turn the printer off.
    2.  Unplug the power from the printer for at least 5-10 minutes.
    3.  While unplugged, remove any paper from the unit.
    4.  Double check for any obstructions found in the unit or paper paths.
    5.  If no obstructions are found, plug the power back in and turn the unit on and see if noise remains.
I hope this helps.  if the grinding noise still remains, please feel free to contact a technical support representative at 1-800-652-2666 between the hours of 10 AM. and 10 PM, EST, Monday - Friday and someone will be happy to assist you.
