My disc drive suddenly made weird noises while reseting

Hi, thanks in advance for reading this and I apologize for my bad grammer and spelling
I got an iMac 27" 2011  lately its been acting a little strange, i've noticed that at first it was my firefox crashing from time to time asking me some question about stopping a script, then suddenly while play a video game League of Legends one of the fans was making a very loud noise the fan sounded it was coming from the top part of the iMac.. I think where the heatsink is.. and just now while reseting my iMac the cd drive was making sounds as well as if it was tryign to eject or set something and it did it about 3times. and another thing my screen when trying to log back into my mac has a diffrent resolution putting the actul log inscreen at one side of the screen and the other part just being black
I know that macs rarely ever get a virues but that doesn't mean that i couldn't have one and perhaps its not even that maybe i'm having tech problems and system failures i'm not sure, but hopefully someone here can help me and point me in the right direction thank you. =)

Access to an expert will usually be better than using Support Communities, or course.
It's extremely unlikely that you have a virus. However, unexplainable noises are worth investigating. First, keep a written log so you can document when you noticed an issue; describe the problem, and when it happened. Next, make sure you regularly back up your data on an external drive.
The sound hear might be the fan, but it's hard to tell without more information.

  • MacBook Pro Hard drive is making weird noises and slow

its important that you understand what has led to these issues. I first was witing an essay on my MacBook. Whole thing dies, screen freezes and entire thing crashes. i have no choice but to force it off by holding the power button... Then the fun begins. I log in and it gives me a circle with a slash basically telling me no you can't use your computer.. Ok.... Let me just get apple support on chat... after 3 painful hours, they even had no idea what was happening... I erased my hard drive after 4 repairs and verifies.. looked fine sure... Redownload os x 10.10 bam, the issues begin, first you hear a weird high pitched noise that varies from just heard by me to my entire household... Lovely Sure makes doing college work harder in the morning as my roommate can hear it and he's under 40 blankets. Next the slowness, niw when I mean slow I mean every 5 seconds I get the pinwheel because it can't multitask correctly. I mean wow I can't even go to the apple in the top corner without it attempting to "load" the menu. even just on pages (which was a nightmare to download I'll get to that soon) Itll give me the pinwheel after a few words... App Store, broken. I tried to redownload pages iMovie etc. 40 clicks for each because they each showed an error occur.. Some right when I click some when it was downloaded... 1.99 GB and then it tells me it can't install... Then, it's a nightmare to log in because start up take 5 to 30 minutes depending on how ever much this machine wants to infuriate me. It's only 7 months old, there is no excuse for this, and I'm very disappointed, now before I take me and this machine to geek squad located in Best Buy can anyone locate with any knowledge why this thing is behaving so disturbinG. Please excuse the horrible spelling, I had to  do this on my iphone and download google chrome because Safari doesn't support apple community When asking questions.

Your storage device is probably faulty.  It would be helpful if you indicated the EXACT model/year MBP that you have.
    Ciao.

  • Disc drive suddenly spitting everything out

That pretty much sums it up. I inserted a CD to import some songs to iTunes. It read the disc, imported the songs, everything is fine.
In the meantime...planning to load some new software, while the songs are still importing I open Disk Utility and start Repair Permissions. I left this going while I ate dinner. At some point, the Mac went to sleep, so I awakened it and was looking at a Web page when suddenly iTunes ejected the CD...with no prompt on my part. Odd, I think to myself. I tab to iTunes and the name of the disc still shows on the left-hand pane. I click on it and hit the eject button...it goes away.
Next order of business...I insert an install CD for CS2. It spins for a few seconds, then spits out. I'm thinking...OK, it's trying to tell me that I don't have enough RAM to install the software, so I attempt to install an older version of Acrobat thinking I can run it in Classic. It spits that one out, too.
I Repair Permissions again and Restart. Insert the music CD. It spits it out. I switch to my other user account and log in. Insert the music CD. It spits it out.
I just recently had the blinking question mark on this machine and had a techy friend run Disk Warrior on it. He said it found some Permission errors and Directory damage and repaired it. For the last three weeks, it's worked fine. Is it time to retire this one? Any hope? Any suggestions?

    You're Welcome Diane!
If the AHT is on CD, then that is how it must be run.
Some Mac models, do not have a disc for the test though, and it is run from the HD, like THIS.
But, if you haven't tried to start up while holding the C key, to run Repair Disk, it's worth a shot!

  • Super drive makes loud whirring noise while the whole MacBook shakes...

Hi there folks. I've had my MacBook for about six months, and every time I put a (homemade) media CD or DVD into the super drive, it makes a horrendous loud noise continuously that's enough to drive me to drink! Not only that, the whole MacBook 'shakes' because of it, and the only way to stop that is to eject the CD/DVD.
But if I put an audio CD into the super drive, even if one burned by myself (as I'm a musician by trade), or if I put a commercial movie DVD into it, then it makes a [softer] noise (as if an airline about to take off) which then goes away.
Could someone perhaps explain this discrepancy, and tell me if there's a remedy? (I'd really like to watch my god-daughter play the piano in a QT movie - and hear her playing at the same time without shaking in my chair, you know!)

    Hi,
How often do you use your Drive? Do you use it every day all day? And how much have you used it. You might just need to replace it.
    Regards,
    Marc

  • Super Drive Making weird Noise on start Up

My super drive makes a weird noise when the computer starts up, is there anyways to turn off the drive and prevent this issue?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xyo7rPjxRRw
    I have a Macbook pro Mid 2009 15in

Perfectly normal on many MBPs. There was a firmware update a while back that was supposed to eliminate the noise (which is simply the drive checking to see whether a disc is inside it). Some people reported that the update stopped the noise, others that it stopped the noise on waking from sleep but not at startup or vice versa, and others that it had no effect at all. For me, with a late '08 unibody, it stopped the noise on waking but not on startup.
Some other users have reported that inserting a CD most of the way into the drive while the computer is on, but pulling it out just as the machine began trying to ingest it, stopped the noise for them. I haven't tried that, because the noise doesn't bother me and I don't like the idea of fighting with something the drive is trying to do.

  • My disc drive is having a seizure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I inserted a burned dvd (a copy of a show I was in during high school) and began to watch it. Ah nostalgia! Well my disc drive suddenly started making grinding noises and the video froze (in the middle of a song!). I tried to eject the dvd, but after making the "ejecting sound" and peeping into my 90 degree room, went immediately back into the womb. I restarted my computer and tried to eject the disc again. Same thing happened. I tried pressing the emergency button above the F1 key. Same thing once again. Then it started trying to eject itself (NO HANDS!!!). It comes out into the room, barely showing its outer rim, and then quickly retreating back. It does this repeatedly. It's even doing it right now, as I am typing, and as you are reading this. That's where we are now, me and my computer. SOS!!!!!

It randomly spit it out. And I mean RANDOMLY! whew. Nice surprise. This computer has a mind of its own.

Recently I bought a MacBook Pro, the first time I entered a disc into the disc dive it wouldn't load up in Itunes - just kept freezing; and the disc drive made a lot of noise, how can I fix this?
I've had my mac for less than a month and for the first time I put in a disc. I can hear a laser sort of noise as well as the disc flapping about or a motor sort of sound? Sounds really bad to me :/
    Someone please help!

    Sounds like a hardware issue.
Did you buy the system from Apple? If so how recent is recent?  If it is new you have 14 days to return it, not sure what the situation is with refurb systems. If it is over 14 days you should still have warranty support make an appointment at an Apple Store or contact Apple support.
If you bought it from someone other then Apple you will need to contact them.
    good luck

  • Some Kind of huge Noise coming from the Disc Drive while inserting and ejecting the disc.

Some Kind of huge Noise coming from the Disc Drive while inserting and ejecting the disc.
i have just purchased it before a couple of days a go.

I just installed a Mac Pro for a client. After a while I noticed this buzzing everyones talking about. It was especially bad after I installed two more internal drives. It seemed to come and go with HD activity. I pulled up the lever on the back of the machine when it was particularly loud and the buzzing went away. So like some others have noticed it's associated with the HD bays. I took the side off and adjusted the seating of the drives so they were exactly centered Now the buzzing is gone. I'll keep an eye on it. Maybe it will need some kind of silicone bumpers where the bay trays are metal to metal.
    More research to come.

  • I just brought my MacPro in for service and they replaced my hard drive. However, now my disc drive has suddenly stopped working! Is there anything I can do to fix this without having to take it back in for service, again!?

The nearest service center is 2 hours from my house and my computer isn't under warranty anymore, so I need alternative options. I'm just frustrated that my disc drive was totally fine until AFTER I took it in for service. I just paid a lot of money for a new hard drive from the apple store and now my disc drive has suddenly stopped working correctly. I tried with multiple CD's and DVD's...loading a disc, but my computer would just make a weird loading noise and then eject the discs. Now it has started fighting taking the disc, so I have stopped trying. Is there anyway to fix this problem without taking it in for service again and paying another boat load of money?
Thanks in advance for your help!

    ShelbyMackenzieLynne,
when you say that your disc drive is damaged, do you mean your MacBook Pro’s hard disk drive, or do you mean its SuperDrive (the CD/DVD drive)?
When you’d updated your MacBook Pro to Mavericks, did the installation succeed, and subsequently freeze up? Or did it freeze up during the Mavericks installation?
Which version of OS X was installed on your MacBook Pro before you’d installed Mavericks?
Are you currently able to boot into the Mavericks recovery partition? To see if you can do so, hold down a Command key and the R key while starting up your MacBook Pro.

  • Making weird noise and won't go into disc mode and all kinds of icons

after having many problems, i managed to get my ipod into disc mode and format it. However, i'm still having similar problems. When i turn it on, it goes on normally but when i connect it to my computer it freezes it. When i try to restart the ipod while connected to the computer, i get the battery is discharged icon, or sometimes the sick icon first and then the discharged icon, and i'm not able to put it into disc mode. After i get the icons, the only way i can get it to start again is to toggle the hold switch many times (took me awhile to figure this out..). Also, the ipod makes a weird repeated disc noise sometimes when its connected or if i'm starting it. If i try to restart the ipod without it being connected to the computer, i get the sick icon until i toggle the hold switch. can anybody help? thanks!
actually, i've managed to get it into disc mode, but it just makes the repeated weird noise nonstop and it doesn't let me open any programs on my computer so i can't format it.

    Hello,
If a sad iPod icon or an exclamation point and folder icon appears on your iPod’s screen, or with sounds of clicking or HD whirring, it is usually the sign of a hard drive problem and you have the power to do something about it now. Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
If you're having trouble, try these steps at different levels one at a time until the issue is resolved. These steps will often whip your iPod back into shape.
Make sure you do all the following “TRYs”
    A. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
    B. Try another FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
    C. Try another FireWire or USB port on your computer .
    D. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
    E. Try to download and install the latest version of iPod software and iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    F. Try these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
    G. Try to put the iPod into Disk Mode if it fails to appear on the desktop
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If none of these steps address the issue, you may need to go to Intermediate level listed below in logical order. Check from the top of the lists to see if that is what keeping iPod from appearing on your computer in order for doing the Restore.
    Intermediate Level
    A. Try to connect your iPod with another computer with the iPod updater pre-installed.
    B. Still can’t see your iPod, put it in Disk Mode and connect with a computer, instead of doing a Restore on iPod Updater. Go and format the iPod instead.
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
    For Window computer
    Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
    Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“Partition Magic”.
    C. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iPod updater.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

    Advance Level
    A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
    B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.
Consider setting up a mail-in repair for your iPod http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Or visit your local Apple Retail Store http://www.apple.com/retail/
In case your iPod is no longer covered by the warranty and you want to find a second repairing company, you can try iPodResQ at your own risk
    http://www.ipodresq.com/index.php
Just in case that you are at the following situation
    Your iPod warranty is expired
You don’t want to pay any service charges
You are prepared to buy a new one
You can’t accept the re-sell value of your broken iPod
Rather than leave your iPod as paper-weight or throw it away.
You can try the following, but again, only do it as your last resort and at your own risk.
Warning ! – It may or may not manage to solve your problem, and with a risk that you may further damage your iPod, which end up as an expensive paper weight or you need to pay more higher repairing cost. Therefore, please re-consider again whether you want to try the next level
    Last Resort Level
    1. . Disconnecting the Hard Drive and battery inside the iPod – Warning !! Your iPod warranty will be waived once you open the iPod.
In Hong Kong there are some electronic shops offering an iPod service for Sad iPod, the first thing they do is to open up the iPod’s case and disconnecting the battery and the Hard Drive from the main board of the iPod. Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. In case you want do it itself and you believe that you are good on fixing the electronics devices and have experience to deal with small bits of electronic parts, then you can read the following of how to open the iPod case for battery and HDD replacement (with Quicktimes)

2.Press the reset button on the Hard Drive inside the iPod – Suggestion from Kill8joy
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2438774#2438774
Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. Therefore, I agree with suggestion to have it fixed by a Pro.

    Yes. Try Amazon.
Before you do upgrade to Snow Leopard, make sure your Mac meets the requirements.
Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard - Technical Specifications
Make sure the disc you tried using doesn't have any fingerprints or smudges on it. The optical drive can't read the disk otherwise.
If your Mac won't read the disc, might be a good idea to rule out any problems with the startup disk BEFORE trying to upgrade the system.

I went to charge my MacBook Air today and I noticed a weird sound coming from the computer when I plugged it in. It sounded just like the noise a hard drive makes (obviously the MBA has flash storage, not a HD). I don't know if maybe there's something wrong with the fan, or if it has something to do with the charging port, or even worse, the battery. I'll just copy/paste my battery info here:

It seems like the noise is occuring whenever I click the trackpad or while I'm scrolling (and it sounds exactly like a hard drive for some weird reason) and it only seems to happen when the adapter is plugged in. I'm guessing it has to do with either the charging port or the battery because when I remove the charger my laptop goes silent like it normally should. Any ideas on what might be going wrong??

things could overlap, different methods of trying to resolve them may be taken.
And this could be viewed as troubleshooting, even if there is no change after.

Hopefully this helps, but a visit to a qualified trained Apple service for diagnostic
may be revealing; should there be a hardware issue behind the symptom.
PS: edit to add: Does the Activity Monitor show any increase or change in
activity and if you have a temperature monitor on the system, does it show
an increase in temperature or fan activity when the device is plugged to AC?
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Disc drive makes strange noises

I just got my macbook and from the very start whenever I insert a disc it makes a noise like its popping and breaking internally. the disc will play fine, but the sound is SO wrong that its worrying me. Has anyone else had this problem? Was it just something wrong with the disc drive?

I think what your hearing is the drive sorting itself out, mine makes quite a racket when you first put a disc in but its fine, i think it is standard across the range. To make sure it would be worth comparing to a friends or listen to one in a shop.
    Cheers.
