My Disk Utility Is Gone After a Restore On My Mac.

My Disk Utility Is Gone After a Restore On My Mac.
How can i get it back?

First make sure it's really gone by looking in the Utilities folder. That folder opens when you press the key combination shift-command-U in the Finder. If it is gone, reinstall the OS.

  • Disk utility does not allow to restore Macintosh HD after I deleted a small size (1GB) partition

Hi, when I tried to create a new 1GB partition (on my Mac mini 2011, using Mac OS X 10.7.3) and then to delete it I could not restore (increase) Macintosh HD size using Disk utility (diskutil list shows the same value for Macitosh HD (498,17GB) partition before and after I deleted a new created 1GB partition).
Please help, how I can restore the original size of Macintosh HD when Disk utility does not allow to restore Macintosh HD after I deleted a small size (1GB) partition?
    Thank you.

The bottom right corner dragging does not help in my case, because it shows that Macintosh HD partition size is maximal, but its real size did not change after I removed 1GB partition.
Maybe any other idea can help me, for example some built-in tool like diskutil which allows to view and manage unused partitions in terminal?
    Thank you.

    Guitar21,
your MacBook Pro has booted into its Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities menu, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it get to the login screen now?

Well if there is a EFI block, then running a program in OS X isn't going to do a lick of good.
After all EFI was designed for Trusted Computing and Digital Rights Management, to act between the OS and hardware, can read drives, contact the Internet and everything.
Windows doesn't use EFI, will have UEFI in Windows 8 though.

  • Disk Utility erase fails after computer wakes up

I'm having an annoying problem with Disk Utility on OS X Lion 10.7.5 failing to erase a harddrive thats plugged into a HDD Docking Station via USB after computer wakes up from screen-off. I have an OCZ Agility 4 SATAIII 512.11 Gb SSD. I'm trying to do a complete erase with 7-Pass Erase so I can use this SSD for my Sony VAIO Laptop so I can ready it for fresh install for Ubuntu.
Now the problem with Disk Utility is that when I've selected 7-Pass Erase, I go away and leave the computer to do it's thing while it erases it, however when I come back and wake the computer screen to come back on, Disk Utility then tells me the erase failed. –– In my System Preferences for Power Saving settings I have the computer set to NEVER sleep, but only put the screen off after a while when not in use (ie; after 30 minutes). My other Sys Prefs settings are also set to ask for login after waking, I've not yet tested without this setting turned off to see if it's cause of problem, but I'll probably give it a shot anyway and see what happens. But I don't see how that would cause the problem since anything working in the background should still remain active while the screen is off just like Time Machine does for example when it does backups since it's USB powered.
Anyway… I think is either some kind of bug/error in Disk Utility or OS X itself. I've tried other Hard Drives and SSD's and they've all worked just about the same, and I don't think it's the HDD Docking Station either because it mounts everything perfectly and runs fine for continus use, I just hope there's a workable solution to fix this annoying problem when waking the screen from sleep. I have tested that it is screen-off that's causing it to fail by pressing the following keys Ctrl + ⇧ + ⏏ to put the screen to sleep, then waking again then entering my password to get back in. I have 1 other thing I've yet to try out, I've currently got it plugged in via USB port on my keyboard, I'll have to try it out on my iMac's main USB's ports to see if that may be part of the problem too.

Please boot into Internet Recovery (Command+Opt+R) and ensure you see the spinning globe. If you do, you can use diskutil cs commands to initialize your disk and re-install/restore from a TM backup.

  • External Hard Drive not in finder, but in Disk Utility, info gone? recover?

My external hard drive shows up in disk utility, but not in finder. Usually, in disk utility, there will be visible the model/make of the hard drive (such as 232.8 GB MDT MD25...etc), and then below that, there be the actual name of the hard drive that I gave it (such as Jack's External Hard Drive). In disk utility, it only has the first one (the MDT... name) and not the other.
How do I fix this situation? Is my hard drive dead? I don't think it is dead because I can hear it spinning and it shows up partially in disk utility. Oh and by the way, it doesn't give me the option of repairing the disk.
    Thanks

Alright, so I bought an external hard drive enclosure. The screeching noise is gone. Disk Utility sees the same "232.9 GB MDT MD25..." stuff, but now also "sees" "ROCK" which is the name I named the hard drive. But the lettering in "ROCK" is gray, not black. Also, its not showing up in finder. When I start up the computer with the ROCK hard drive on, finder says something like, "The disk you have connected was not readable by this computer." I try to verify disk in Disk Utility but it says "Disk Utility Stopped Verifying ROCK because the following error was encountered: Filesystem verify or repair failed."
So buying the enclosure, helped, but it seems the hard drive is damaged or the information is corrupt or something.
What is the problem I am having? (Is it not mounting or is the data bad or whats going on?)
Is there something I can do right now that can make this all better?
My last resort will be to try data recovering software (last resort because it costs around $100).
Thanks for all your help so far everyone.

  • Getting out of disk utility when you want to restore your Mac???

I wanted to restore my Macbook Pro early 2011, so I shut down my computer then turned it on and held down option. I got to the disk utility app but now I'm having second thoughts about restoring it. I can't get out of disk utility and get back to my homescreen... Any help? It's been irritating me a lot.

If you've erased everything, then you need to reinstall OS X:
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Finder wont recognize my external hard drives (NTFS), even when disk utility does, just after upgrading to OS X Mavericks!

After installing OS X Mavericks, my 2 USB HD don't show up in Finder, but do appear in Disk Utility. With the previous OS X had no troubles!
    HD1 Hitachi 1TB / HD2 SAMSUNG 1TB

If they show up on the Desktop baltwo is correct since the finder does see them but the default preference hides them from the sidebar on the left.
Click the word finder by the Apple and choose preferences.
Choose the tab along the top that says sidebar.
    Check away at those boxes.

  • Disk utility to clone a drive (restore)

I'm having issues with my external passport (WD) drive where snow leopard is installed. It is only working intermittently, but if I wiggle the USB connection at the macbook's USB port, sometimes it comes back on. With that said, I'm not sure if it's the drive, the cable or the mac's ports going bad. So, I did a really good Time Machine backup, and am now cloning that drive to another drive. It's taking forever, though. I'm going on 4 hours at this point, and disk utility says there are 56 minutes remaining. However, the lights on the passport drive are no longer scrolling from side to side; there is just a single light indicating standby mode. However, I can open the drive and it's contents easily from desktop or finder. Should I be concerned that in disk utility, the "source" window is now blank and the "destination" window is now greyed out? The destination drive appears to be working, but no longer appears on desktop. Is this normal? I don't remember noticing this when I have cloned drives in the past. Thoughts, anyone?
    Thanks!

yes, this is normal when DU does a block level copy. it will unmount both the source and the target drive so you won't be able to do anything with them while cloning is going on. has the time remaining gone down since you posted?

  • Disk Utility shows faults after factory reset

    Hi there,
I have made a factory reset on my Mac mini (Late 2012). For that I have the hard drive erased and reinstalled Mac OS X 10.8 using the backup partition. Right after the installation, I checked the permissions with Disk Utility. The following problems of access rights were found:
Is this normal for a clean installation?
    Best regards,

Yes.  Those are permissions that may never get repaired, but aren't a problem if you run repair permissions and get those errors.

  • Disk utility is gone!

So I went to use disk utility recently and realized that it was no longer there. I started looking through the web for ways to get it back and found all the threads about the disk utility problems for people with mac osx 10.3.9, which i do, when upgrading to the latest itunes. The only problem is, the only problem people seemed to mention was that disk utility wouldn't work properly, I couldn't find any accounts of people losing disk utility completely, nor what one should do in such a case. I searched my hard drive, its just not there to be found. I tried running the powerbook software dvd to no effect, and I tried downloading and installing the upgrade for 10.3.9 again from this site, which seems to have only replaced an incomplete, non-functional portion of the program. There were no downloads for disk utility by itself that I could find on this site. What I need to know is, does anyone know of a way to get back disk utility without reformatting?

There has to be. I checked my 10.3.2 Install disk and it is there. Did anyone follow the "Close the Welcome to Mac OS X window part? You see, when you insert the CD, a Finder Window, titled "Welcome to Mac OS X" appears. You may think so, but this folder is not the root directory of the CD. To get to the root directory, close the Welcome to Mac OS X Finder window that comes up when you insert the CD and doucle-click on the CD icon. It then takes you to the root directory. Now the window will be titled "Mac OS X Install Disk 1" In there, there will be these folders and files:
    - Welcome to Mac OS X (See, this screen that comes up is a folder)
    - --->Applications<----
    - bin
    - dev
    - etc
    - Library
    - mach
    - mach_kernel
    - private
    - sbin
    - System
    - tmp
    - usr
    - var
    - Volumes
In there go to the Applications folder. In the Applications folder, go to the Utilities folder. In there, there will be a Disk Utility application. If all this is too hard, simply search the Install Disk for a folder called Utilities (Go to the "Find" window, Select Specific places for the Search In Property, Check the box next to Mac OS X Install Disk 1---Name is: Utilities). Search for that and it will return with 2 results, then one you are looking for is the 2nd one (The parent directory is Applications).
If this is too hard to follow, you are hopeless.

I Used an app called app cleaner and it deleted my disk utility is there a way i can get it back

Delete App Cleaner and never use it again.  Reinstall your OS.

  • When I go to install OS X on the disk utility I got a prompt telling me that Mac 10.7 is not available. I am connected to the internet. What do I do in order to install OS?

My laptop was running slow while in the regular mode, but in safe mode it would work fine. I deleted all of the content through the disk utility. Once I would go back to the recovery mode prompt and click on install os I go to the next page and get a prompt that says mac os x 10.7 is not available. There also is no picture to the left of the OS system like most people have on their recovery mode screen on the install option. Please help!
    Thanks!

That might do.  There is the 'poor man's' alternative.  Take a fine microfiber cloth (eyeglasses cleaning cloth) and wrap it around a business card.  Insert it gently into the slot.  Some times it works.  Do not dismiss the possibility that the DVD drive is kaput.
I did purchase this laptop from my brother a couple years ago. He told me the first operating system that was on the laptop was OS X 10.6. He gave me the disc to install,
According to the information that I have, a Mid 2009 MBP came with Leopard (10.5).  You will have to install Leopard (if you have the original disk) or purchase from the online store a Snow Leopard (10.6.3) retail disk.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
This disk is a requisite in order to install and run Lion (10.7) or any other newer OSX.  You have to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 before downloading and installing Lion.
    Ciao.
