My disk utility says my hd is a disk image and has 1.26 gigs?

it is a brand new 750 gb hd and It has been formatted and has mountain lion installed. I can boot off of it and it shows up as 750gb when I use a little external usb adapter. But not when its plugged in internally. I have tried to repair the disk in disk utilitys but it wont let me click on anything. I tried the old hd in the external usb adapter, booted up fine, its a little slow, but when its internal it shows the same disk image thing and has 1.26 gigs. Im lost. help please.

A drive that can not report its Make&Model and a reasonable size/capacity cannot be repaired by any software.
If it is cabled and powered correctly, it has died.
If you are certain it has not died, that leaves your MacBook or possibly the internal connecting cable, if any.

After a disk image is created and saved, how much storage space does one need to work with it ?
Let's say I create a 10 GB disk image that is saved in an encrypted form. Once I try to open it I have first to provide a password and then the drive corresponding to this image mounts to the desktop. Once the drive is mounted, since I have the disk image and the drive, does it mean that I actually have 20 GB added to my desktop folder or both files combined still take up only 10 GB of storage space ?
One other question:
I have saved a disk image to an external Firewire hard disk. When I click on this disk image the drive mounts on the desktop. Is there a way to open this disk image so that the drive is actually mounted on the same external disk where the image is or does it always mount on the desktop independent of where the image is ?

I thought I addressed this.
You can create a disk image and save it on an external drive. Double-clicking that disk image (saved on an external drive) will mount it, with the mount point being in /Volumes, same as every other mounted volume on your computer, as discussed in my prior post.

Disk Images and External Drives - PLEASE HELP

Hi all,
I've got to a point where i can't afford to keep buying expensive drives to work form with Final Cut Pro X so decided to just work from several high spec drives and then back them up on other cheaper drives, reformat the high spec ones and start again.
Not really understanding how disk imaging works I hoped I could carbon copy mountable and read and writeable drives (in this case a thunderbolt lace SSD) on to a cheaper mass storage, wipe it and start again. I hoped it would then appear on the drives top level just as the drive appears on my desktop, and that I could access it if needed or port it back to a single drive at a later date? Is this possible? Can anyone help? So far everything I've tried has failed.
One thought I did have was to create several partitions on the cheaper mass drive and duplicate it on to there? But I can't find any help or instruction for this online and need to make sure its write before I go deleting old projects.
Attached are a picture of what I have (the disk image file) and what I was hoping to create (a mountable replica of a working drive on an external HD)

You can research the terms disk image and back up for several hours. That might not help.
None of the back up routines I am aware for for video and large media files use any compression or bundling systems like .dmg. I think your best bet is to make one-to-one copies of your files to your cheap drives. If you need the older projects, you copy them back to your working drives. That's pretty much how it's always been unless you are have a nice NAS RAID with mirroring to another rack of drives.
The problem with cheap mass storage is no that it's unreliable. It's just not QUITE as reliable as more expensive systems. Having a copy of your work on a disk that might or is likely to fail is almost the same as not having a backup at all. but there is a point of diminishing returns for all of us in this business. This trend toward 4k and 8k, and FCPX's inability to manage media efficiently, means we all must add TB of storage for every project. A friend of mine includes a couple of TB drives in his fees. The client pays for and gets the drives.

How can I use my Mac G3 (OS 9.2.2) to make Windows disk images and compress them into Windows stuffed archives?

I have a collection of old Windows diskettes, 800 K and 1.4 MB. I want to make disk images (or whatever is the Windows equivalent) and compress them into Windows stuffed archives. I want Windows users to be able to download them, expand the stuffed archives, extract the disk images, and use the softsare on old Windows computers. I need to do the work on a Power Macintosh beige G3 Tower using OS 9.2.2. What software can I get to do it?

I noticed that DropStuff 6.0, which I use on my G3 Tower, has an option to make compressed files that are self-extracting on Windows. Do you know if that works? I suppose that I could make such a file and then find somebody with a Windows computer to test if for me.
Yes, I could (shudder) get an old Windows computer somewhere, learn to use it, and do the project that way. Do you know if the old versions of Windows include disk image programs and file compression programs? Or, would I need to buy some old software?

Updated to 4 a while ago, but the last versin of 3 is lingering and reappears, want to get rid of it, as well as disk images and other clutter that usually goes away after an update. Any ideas?

really two things: one: the last version of FF 3 keeps reappearing when, for example, links in emails require opening the browser. Example: an email from netflix with a link to the site which I clicked on to update some info. Instead of going to/thru the current browser FF4, the previous version appears---more accurately the "firefox updated" page for 3.16 or whatever it was. Why is this still there? Why is there more than one copy there in the first place, after updating?
also, related perhaps, why does the FF4 disk image and application folder always appear when I open FF4. Usually they go away after the update and first restart, but now they appear every time I open the browser? I have snow leopard 10.6.7 if that tell u anything

Slave drive, CDs, USB drives, Disk Images and FW drives fail to mount

Hi. I have two Maxtor internal hard drives (6Y160P0 and 6Y120P0), the second of which (6Y120P0) all of a sudden will not mount on the desktop. When I reboot my Mac, I get two identical error windows that state, “The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer”, with options to initialize, ignore, or eject. (There are no other drives of any type connected to the computer).
Within Disk Utility (when run from the primary hard drive), the slave drive shows up, but its icon is dimmed. Clicking the “Mount” button does nothing. Disk First Aid does not allow one to “Repair Permissions” nor “Repair Disk”, presumably since it won’t mount (eg, these options are dimmed). One odd aspect about Disk Utility is that the master and slave drive are listed as “disk0s10” and “disk1s10”, respectively, rather than the way they usually show up with the names I’ve given them. Yet on the desktop the working master drive shows up with its given name.
When I run Disk Itility from a CD, both internal drives look fine, accept repairs, and the drives are listed by their proper names.
As another interesting clue, all of the Disk Images (stored on the working master internal hard drive) that I have attempted to mount fail to open as well. When I doubleclick them, I get an error that reads, “The following disk images failed to mount: Reason: No mountable file systems”.
Two different USB keychains fail to mount; my FW drive fails to mount.
I’ve run Applejack Auto Restart without any difficulty several times.
Apple's Hardware check CD says all is AOK.
I’ve rebuilt this problematic disk (and the master) several times with Disk Warrior 3.03 and all is supposedly AOK.
SmartReporter says both disks are fine.
TechTool Pro 4.1.2 has run the following checks on the problem disk and these are AOK: Disk Controller, SMART, Read/Write.
All of this makes me wonder if the issue is with my system software, rather than the slave disk??? Interestingly, CDs refuse to mount as well when I've booted from the primary hard drive (but I don't think it is the CD drive itself since I can boot from the CD drive). This, coupled with the fact that disk images won't mount, makes me now think it is an OS issue rather than hardware.
Any suggestions about what I can do to salvage and fix this problem would be greatly appreciated!

His suggestion to run the 10.4.8 combined PPC update worked like a charm and solved the problem perfectly!
PS If you are having the same issue, there is the problem that one can't use a USB/FW drive to get the combo updater onto the problematic hard drive, and even if you can, the faulty software won't allow one to mount a .dmg image. This can be solved by using "Target" mode, eg connect the problematic CPU to a working CPU (in this case, my PowerBook) via a FW cable, then boot up the problem CPU while holding down the letter "t". One can then drag the combined updater unstuffed file (eg, not the .dmg) directly to the problematic disk from the working CPU. Then, when I booted in the problematic disk/CPU, all it took was a doubleclick on the unstuffed updater and all was fine.

Errors when trying to open up a disk image that has been comp. & encrypted.

I have an old 15” PowerBook G4 that I purchased back in 2004 that I wanted to backup the data on in preparation to sell it. The PowerBook has Leopard (Mac OS 10.5) installed on it. I used my Leopard installation DVD to boot the computer up and then launched disk utility (v. 11.0 (252)). I wanted to make a disk image (.dmg) of my entire “Macintosh HD” partition, so after unmounting the partition (otherwise you get a “resource busy” error message), I selected File -> New -> “Disk Image From...(<hard drive partition>)”. The next screen presented me with a name to type in for the saved disk image file and options to compress and encrypt (128 or 256 bit AES) the image. I could not get the image to begin creation when I had both compression and encryption set. I kept getting the error message “Unable to create (error -60007)”. So, I opted to create the disk image with just compression selected. This worked fine and I was able to select the image (let’s call it disk_image1) and perform an Image -> “Scan Image for Restore...” successfully as well as mount the image and open up files (the verification process took a long time before the image mounted, but it was successful).
Next, I moved the Firewire 800 external HD containing “disk_image1” to my new MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard installed) and opened up disk utility (v. 11.5.1 (298.1)). I was able to successfully mount the image and browse and open up files with this updated version of disk utility. I then attempted to convert the disk image I just created to a new disk image (let’s call it disk_image2) via Images -> “Convert...”. I selected “disk_image1” and then named the new image (disk_image2). I then selected compression and 128bit AES encryption, entered in a passphrase and started the process. Everything worked great in creating “disk_image2”, but when I tried to open up the image either in Finder or within disk utility, I got error messages. In disk utility, I got the message “Unable to attach “disk_image2.” (Authentication error).” and within Finder, I got “The following disk image couldn’t be opened” disk_image 2 (Authentication error). Note, I was never asked to provide the password I used to encrypt the image nor did I ever select to save it in my keychain. Just as a precautionary measure, I check my keychain and did not see the password for the encrypted image saved in there.
Is there a bug within disk utility with the way a compressed & encrypted image is created or a problem with the authentication process for an encrypted image?

I have not had this happen to me, but have read similar stories from people on these boards for years. I think saving an entire OS X boot disk to a disk image is asking for trouble. If anything goes wrong, one byte of data is copied incorrectly. it can render the entire image unmountable and all of the data in it inaccessible.
I'd use Disk Utility's Restore button (or a program like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner) to make a complete copy of the hard drive onto its own hard drive, skipping the disk image. If any bit of data gets dropped then only one file is affected, instead of the whole works. Do you have any other stuff on that external drive? If not, just erase it and try again, copying everything directly to the drive instead of to a disk image.

Unable to delete a disk image and reclaim hard drive space.

I created a disk image on which to store some stuff, and I now want to get rid of the disk image (which is 115 gigs of storage) and reclaim the hard drive space. I'm running Mac OS X 10.8.3. I have been unable to delete it through disk utility. I can only unmount it or mount it, but the storage space remains with it. I can't get rid of it through the downloads folder either, but if I find it in "volumes" via spotlight, and try to put it in the trash, it tells me "ENN.dmg cannot be thrown away because it can't be deleted." I tried using root user to delete the item and it told me I could not because it belongs to another person. My permissions are "read and write." I've searched all sorts of forums. Can anyone help? What error are you getting? Are you dragging and dropping on the trash can or right clicking and selecting "Move to Trash"?
Right click on the image file and select get info. What are the permissions set to.
Can you move or copy it to another folder or a external drive and if you can copy it can you delete the copy?

OSX G5 Disk Image and HDD manipulation... Help

On the PC a program called Partition Magic, among others, that allows partition copy, resize, create, delete, etc.
I have used Mac disk utility, but I haven't found it to do what I'm trying to do.
I am looking for the same type of program on the Mac that will work on IMAGE FILES. If I image my HDD and it's 60Gb, but only 20Gb is used, then I have a lot of wasted space in my image file. I would like software to adjust the size UP or DOWN for a given image file. And no, I do not want to recreate the whole image everytime I resize it.
Would also like a program that works on the physical HDD to change the size of an existing partition without destroying it.

When you select either of the two options for your camera on the left, you care going to create a disk image of your entire hard drive. If you have a 60GB camera, you will have a 60GB disk image. If your camera is totally full, this may be OK. But if your camera only has 20GB and you want to back it up to a disk image, you could be wasting 40GB.
THe solution is to create a blank disk image with a custom size (that is just large enough for what you need. Make it Read / write (R/W) format. You can mount this disk image later and drag the complete contents of your camera to it.

Encrypted Disk Image and Backup

If one uses Apple’s Disk Utility to create an encrypted disk image, what happens when SuperDuper, Time Machine, or any other backup utility is running while the (unencrypted) image is mounted on the desktop?
Are both the encrypted image and the unencrypted data transferred to the backup device? Or is just the secure encrypted data copied to the destination?

I've played around with this a little. As best I can tell, when cloning an entire HD volume both CCC and SuperDuper will always copy an image file (.dmg, .sparsebundle, etc) that resides that on that HD, whether or not that file's disk image is mounted at the time. However the contents of the mounted disk image volume will not be copied separately, and so If the disk image is encrypted, no unencrypted content will get transferred this way. However as mentioned in the SuperDuper link above, it's better to unmount the image in any event, in order to ensure that the underlying .dmg or .sparsebundle file gets copied faithfully.
If you want to copy the contents of a mounted disk image with CCC or SuperDuper, you can do so as a completely separate procedure from copying the HD. If you first mount the image (giving a password if it was encrypted), that mounted image will appear as an independent volume in the "source list" of CCC or SuperDuper, and you can choose that volume as a source for the copy procedure. You would need to designate a different target volume as well, so as not to overwrite your HD clone. If the disk image was encrypted and you deliberately copy its mounted image separately in this fashion, the resulting files on the target will not be encrypted.

Disk Image and Backups

I need an expert response here... I need it to be objective as possible to the goal that I am trying to accomplish and that is the following. I want to be able to create a system backup wherever I am in the world in as short a period of time without the install DVD's. What is the best way?
For example can I create a disk image of my hard drive using Disk Utility? If so, and I encounter a catastrophic failure, and I have that disk image on DVD or a external FireWire drive could I just reload that image and then be back up and running? If that is true, what would be the process using Disk Utility to create that image and the process to restore it as well? Please provide as detailed info as possible about the process?
Now I do regular backups using Time Machine. But does Time Machine afford me the same opportunity as a disk image? For example if I encounter a failure, can the external drive that I am using for Time Machine create a complete system restore without the install DVD? Or is the disk image the only way?
I do understand that with the disk image I would always have to be updating it to make sure I have the latest files. However, as it stands right now, I have all essential files that I would need already on my hard drive ready for the disk image if that is the way to go. All my other files would be on my iDisk or external Hard Drive. I appreciate anyone who can shed some light here.

What you will always need to run Disk Utility is:
1. A functioning OS
2. A copy of Disk Utility on accessible media
Put another way, Disk Utility is an application. No application can stand alone -- they all depend on an operating system being up & running to supply the essential services they need.
This means you can't just "reload" an image without first booting into a working OS from some source. This could be the installer DVD, a flash drive with the OS installed on it, or an external drive. It can't be the internal drive if it has problems.
Since you have to have a separate source for both the OS & Disk Utility, you might as well consider the clone option already mentioned. The downside is that this requires a large enough external drive to hold everything, so a cheap flash drive probably won't suffice. The upside is you don't have to image or restore anything -- just boot from the clone & keep working, repairing/restoring the internal drive whenever it is convenient.

IDVD Hanging On Disk Image AND Burning

I've been having this problem since upgrading to 10.4.7 (I have iDVD 6.02). I can't burn a DVD and I can't save a disk image. iDVD just hangs up and quits or it just hangs and becomes non-responding.
I restarted and repaired permissions over six times and even tried it running no other applications but iDVD and still have the same issue.
Help!

I set it up Wednesday Night to burn and at 9 am it was still hanging. I force quit iDVD and restarted my Mini and set it up to burn again and when I got home from work it was hung at the Audio encoding again. I repaired permissions and attempted the process again over night and this time the DVD had been ejected but was still blank when I went to play it. I then read the this forum post and trashed the plist, repaired permissions and attempted again and still no luck! I am about to try it again and see what I get when I get home from work!

Disk Images and Folder Dimensions

Hey all,
I've been looking around, and I can't seem to find an answer to this. How can I create a disk image based on a folder or volume and preserve the folder's original dimensions?
For example, I have a background image for a folder, and I've been able to create a disk image with that background image; however, after archiving that image, posting it, and re-downloading it, the dimensions are completely lost.
When I've tried to just recompress my disk image, but, doing anything shy of just copying over the contents of the folder onto a R/W disk image, the dimensions keep getting lost. (And, as stated above, after archive and download, the posted image still loses its dimensions).
Any ideas?

I can't answer your query WRT Mail accounts, since you didn't reveal how you're making the images. Most recommend using something like NetRestore (part of OS X Server), Deploy Studio, or System Imaging software from Apple. Best source on imaging is the system-imaging list.
