My display has vertical colored lines then gray. What should I do?

My MacBook doesn't start up correctly. When the power is turned on, several thin rainbow colored vertical lines appear on the screen then the whole screen fades to white/gray. What do I need to do to remedy this?

HellO:
Take it in for diagnosis and service.  The problem appears to be hardware.

my screen has like 20 different-colored vertical lines going down it and they seem to be stemming from a horizontal black line. it looks like a crack in the screen. there is no physical crack on the outside but i am assuming it is on the inside. my macbook is not under warranty anymore. how can i get this fixed, will it be expensive? what can i do?? if i touch it at ALL it gets way worse, im scared if i even close my macbook it will get worse. please help!!!

    Have you tried:
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.

  • 17" Studio Monitor Display with single, vertical color line

My 17" Studio Monitor just recently developed a single, vertical color line in the display. No matter what I am viewing the color line is there. Re-boot doesn't remove it. Neither does un-plugging the computer.
Anyone know the cause and/or remedy?
    Thanks for any help!

There is an adapter called a DVIator that you will need ..or something similar. It will turn turn the ADC connection into a DVI connection ..then you would need something to turn regular DVI into the Mini DVI connection to fit into the iMac.
Personally, I don't think it would be worth the cost ..the DVIator alone is like $100. I'd just buy a new screen for that price. Preferably one that was a little closer to the same brightness of the 24" iMac's screen. I had my old Studio display next to my new 24" iMac and it looked so old and dingy I wouldn't be able to stand the difference using it as a second monitor.

  • IBook G4 14" freezes at start up or just shows vertical color lines

Hello, I am struggling with my 14" iBook G4. It either freeze at the early phase of starting up with gray background/apple icon, or shows vertical colorful lines on the screen. I tried to wipe out the HD and reinstall OS, it froze during installing. Whatever is shows on the screen does not mirror to an exteral display. I don't know if anyone has experience on this, a display issue, HD issue, or a more serious logic board issue. By the way, I was able to install OS TIGER on its HD by starting it in target mode and hooking up to another ibook with firewire cable. Any suggestion will be very appreciated. - I am not very experienced with Mac, trying to learn more at this forum. Thank you.

Hello, Cornelius. I am back. Here is what I did. I inserted the hardware test disk, restarted computer, while holding down "c" key. I could hear disk spinning. The colorful lines showed at begining, then they went away, leaving faint backlight on the screen, and DVD drive went silent. Then I restarted it, while holding down apple+L keys, like what you suggested. Disk spins, colorful lines stay, and then everything goes silent. While I was doing this, I hook the mini DVI port to a CRT monitor which I know works well for my powerbook. But no video signal was transferred to it at all, except a turning-on signal. I have another disk says "applecare protection plan", aslo says"techtool deluxe". I don't know what this is for, should I try this? I will be waiting for your or other pros' further instruction. I feel the frustration, but enjoy the learning process. Thank you very much for your precious suggestions.

  • I have vertical colored lines appearing on the Mini Ipad screen

I have vertical colored lines appearing on the Mini Ipad screen

I had the same problem with my first gen ipad mini. The solution was not  to do a hard reset, but instead to push the sleep/off button until the  red slider appeared, then slide to OFF. Wait a few seconds then push the  sleep/home button until the Apple logo appeared. The lines were gone.  I  called Apple Support and they wanted $19 to troubleshoot over the phone  and $99-$199 to bring to the nearest Apple store. This may not be a  permanent fix, but it resolved the issue. I purchased my ipad mini from a  local electronics store in May of this year. Believing it to be new and  still under warranty I called the AppleCare store and discovered that  it had "previously" been purchased in November a year ago and was no  longer in warranty. As stated, I've had the device since May and it has  worked wonderfully until today when I turned it on and it had colored  vertical lines displayed on the screen. The lines would change color at  times and even became a solid black stripe. The strange thing was that  when taking a screen shot the lines were not noticeable and didn't show  up on the picture. The Customer Care support tech told me to search  other display issues. On one of the support threads it had something to  do with videos/video apps and that is where I saw to do the SLIDER OFF.  It worked even when the hard RESET had not.

  • White with vertical colored lines on Equium A60

    Hi
I am new to this but really need your help. My laptop is about 18 months old and has always worked fine. Last week I plugged a broadband modem into it through an Ethernet cable and set up broadband. A couple of minutes after doing this when I looked at the screen again, it had gone all white with vertical colored lines down it. I have rebooted the machine etc and that is all I ever get now. As soon as I switch on, it just goes straight to white with these vertical colored lines.
I have tried connecting an external monitor to it and that works fine. The laptop is a Toshiba Equium A60. I am worried that the screen has blown, is it possible for a surge or something like that to come down the Ethernet cable and blow the screen?
    Thanks
    Adrian

Display functionality has nothing to do with Ethernet cable. Test with external monitor is very good and on this way you can see if maybe graphic card is responsible for that.
According to your description I believe that display is the problem. Of course, just intensive display test can give more answers.

  • Vertical Color Lines in Monitor IMAC

Hi: I love macs but i have a problem with my IMAC:
A week ago i saw the first vertical line in monitor (yellow). Two day later i appear one more (purple), and today , when i turn on the mac, have another !!!!
Whats that? Its a problem with IMAC???
I friend told me that IMAC are bad and its not in guarantee!!!!
I want to buy another but if they are damish later that 18 months, i dont want to waste my money!
    Please help!

    Hello guys,
I hope my message can help you all fix your screen problem. I'm a mac lover and felt irritated when I saw all those vertical color lines appeared on my iMac screen, especially if the problem occurred not because of reckless usage but because of some production flaw, in one of Apple's outsource manufacturer, in Shanghai (I read somewhere). At that time my LCD screen had 18 lines in total!!!
Let me tell you my experience...
I called Apple Care support, because I live in Singapore I called local support, and told them about my problem. Then the guy asked me a few questions like what is my iMac serial number, my particulars, when did I buy iMac, what is my problem and so on. I said does Apple has a special warranty for this problem because I read in a forum I can get it fix for free.
Then, the guy told me he will call me back to see whether I am eligible for this warranty. Not long after that, the guy called me and told me a good news that I am eligible for this special warranty and can fix my LCD screen for free. Then the next day, I brought my iMac to a local Apple Repair Center. Three days later they called me and I picked up my iMac with new LCD screen without paying anything. That was so awesome I thought, the apple care support handled the problem nicely, the repair center staffs were very friendly, and above all that I get a BRAND NEW LCD screen for FREE!!!
I hope you guys who have the same problem with me can try to call Apple Care Support, eventhough your Mac's 1-year warranty has expired and you didn't buy an Apple extended warranty. This is a special case for Apple, you remember upthere when I mentioned about manufacturing defect.
Just for your information, I bought my iMac in early Dec 2005 and I called Apple Care in June 2008, so I have used it for almost three years this december. Maybe if your iMac still less then three years after you bought it this special warranty is still eligible for you, but for you who has more-than-3-year-old iMac you can try too. Another information is my iMac is third generation iMac with iSight, 17" screen, 1.9Ghz processor. So anyone who ever said that this warranty only valid for first generation iMac, this is not true.
Ok, lastly I hope you guys can fix this problem soon and be glad with your BRAND NEW LCD screen, free from Apple.
Hope this helps. God bless you all!

  • TS1538 iPad not turning on. Vertical colored lines followed by a black screen. Help!

My iPad is a little less than a year old. While playing a game on my iPad, multicolored vertical lines appeared across left side of iPad followed by a black screen. After a few seconds the screen flicked back on....then a few more vertical colored lines and completely black screen again.  Initially when pushing home button I heard Siri but after attempting several times to restart iPad, soon I no longer heard Siri and screen was just completely black and iPad seems to be dead. Battery was at 60%. I attempted to plug into wall and charge anyway, but that did nothing. I also attempted to plug into iTunes but iPad screen remains black and isn't recognized by computer or iTunes. (No apple logo shows up...nothing) Resetting by holding home button and reset switch for 10 seconds isn't working...I tried over and over holding both buttons for way over 10 seconds. Please help....is it dead? Anything else I can try on my own?

I have the same issue on my iMac 27" i7 late 2009 with ATI Radeon HD 4850.
Booting in safe mode is the only way to use it but the system can't do much and it's really slow.
From my findings it's for sure a GPU or VRAM issue so I've just bought a spare GPU board to replace the fault one.
Reballing could also solve this issue but usually you need also a new ATI GPU as well.
I'm not sure about nVidia GPU but it seems that you can replace it with a more powerful ATI Radeon HD 6970M card (if you use games to take advantage of it).
Your post is one year old and probably you already solved the issue so would be nice if you could share your solution for it.
    best regards,
    Franco

  • What causes vertical color lines on ipad2 and how do you remove them ?

What causes vertical color lines on an IPad. And how do you remove them ?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
If still present: Take it to an Apple Store for evaluation.

Don't believe it's a factor, but you should update your iOS.
If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).
Tip 2 - If you're updating via wifi, place your iPad close to your router to preclude getting a corrupted download.

  • My macbookpro 15" screen has vertical blue lines

    Hello,
    I have a Macbook Pro 15" (mid 2010) 2.53GHz Interl Core i5 running OSX Lion 10.7.4.
Generally the computer and screen are in good condition and have had no damage.
The screen has Vertical blue lines and there is a tint of blue generally. The startup apple grey screen however is perfect, it is only when it enters the login screen that the lines appear. All the colours are off. Other than these lines the computer works perfectly
The computer was used yesterday (09 June 2012) without a problem for approx 1hour. It was then left for the day indoors on a desk out of direct sunlight. The computer was switched on later that evening and the problem started to appear
I have already tried to reset the PRAM and SMC with no affect.
I also read that it may be a cable problem, however as the startup screen works perfectly i question this.
    Please can you help!
    Thanks in advance,
    Alex.

I suggest you take it to an Apple store genius bar or a repair facility for evaluation.  This is most likely a hardware problem.
    Ciao.

  • Sync with iMac,  Thin vertical colored lines = Catastrophe

    Hey guys,
An interesting and tragic event occurred when i tried to sync my iPhone with my iMac last night. It started to sync then itunes froze, then my iMac's entire screen switched to thin vertical colored lines. The only way to fix it was to restart the computer.
I tried restoring both the phone and the mac. it appears to only happen when I'm actually adding stuff to the phone (podcasts, apps, etc.) Also, mt nano syncs perfectly.
    any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Nick

I just started having this with my iPod Touch and my Macbook. I posted a message as well. Someone suggested I try de-authorizing and authorizing my computer. So far I am syncing and got further then before. Try that. Try to open itunes and then de-authorize, then re-authorize and play a song or something bought from Itunes, then dock your iPhohne and sync.

My blackberry Z30 is displaying a vertical pink line frn top to bottom of screen, what should I do to clear it, secondly the head phone need to be supported by hand before it can funtion.

That sounds like a display hardware problem. You should get the device replaced under warranty through your carrier.

  • Vertical Color Lines on my imported file how can i remove and edit

Vertical Color Lines on my imported file how can i remove and edit

If you haven't used After Effects before, you should understand that posession of a template is NO guarantee of success without prior AE knowledge.  It appears you haven't used AE before.
The color bars indicate a missing file, and your screen shot reveals no text layers. Looking at the precomp names, opening the one called, "edit text" might be useful.
I will guess that the following would be even more useful:

Without knowledge of the AE basics, templates are pretty much useless.

  • My ipad has multi-colored lines on it how do i fix it?

My iPad Mini has mutli-colored lines across it how do i fix it? i tried turning it on n off i restored it but nothing will work

You can't fix it.  You need to make a reservation at the Genius Bar at the nearest Apple Store.   Use the link below to find one near you.  Before attending the reservation you should create a backup of the device.  You can use iTunes but ICloud should prove more convenient.
