My display won't stay "up"

How can I tighten the tension on the display arm?  The pivot points have caps with three recesses which would seem to require a special tool?

I've read that it does require a special tool.
Perhaps the repair manual would provide more clues.

  • MBP display won't stay off, wakes from sleep

    I have a newish 15" MBP, 1680 display, hooked up to a Dell external monitor when it's at home. When I go to bed I cut power to the display via control-shift-eject, but generally don't put the computer to sleep overnight.
    With this new machine, after it's been running for a while (as little as a day, or as long as a couple weeks), the displays will come on again in the night. Once this happens, the displays won't stay off for longer than about five seconds. If I then put the machine to sleep, it'll wake itself up minutes or hours later (generally not long enough to miss a Time Machine interval). The only cure is rebooting.
    I tried an SMC reset, but that fix only lasted about as long as any other reboot.
    I've since tried systematically removing every peripheral (a USB hub, the external display, any directly-connected iOS devices) and testing display-off after each; no change. I've turned off my Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, then disabled Bluetooth on the computer, turned off wifi, quit every menu extra (jitouch, Viscosity, Dropbox, Pastebot, Fastscripts, Transmit, Teleport), and quit every running application. The problem remains repeatable after every step.
    It's repeatable at the moment — any suggestions for other things to try, preferably short of the reboot which temporarily masks the problem? I'm a little concerned that it's going to manifest at some point while I have the laptop sitting in a bag, which will then cook itself.
    I'm on 10.6.4 now, the problem started on 10.6.3.
    Thanks.

    Try checking the system logs in Applications/Utilities/Console.app for clues. The entries carry time stamps. Usually a wake event will leave some trace. By matching time stamps to the time of occurrence you may find the culprit.

  • PB G4 Display Won't Stay Closed

    The display on my PB G4 won't stay closed. There seems to be something wrong with the latch, as it won't catch (or stay caught) when the display is closed. Any thoughts on how to fix this annoyance?
    Thanks.

    Two inches of duct tape or a large rubber band make a pretty effective low-cost fix, but you can also replace the latch assembly — for a hefty price:
    http://pbfixit.com/Guide/33.17.0.html
    Note that these instructions apply to the Ti DVI models. you don't say which Tibook you have.
    To keep your PB from waking when it opens (it waits until you hit any key), follow these steps:
    To set PB so opening the display doesn't wake the computer:
    Applications > Utilities > Terminal
    Type or paste the following in the Terminal window:
    sudo pmset lidwake 0
    It will ask for your password. Type that in, hit return, and quit the Terminal.
    To change it back so the system wakes when you open the lid, type:
    sudo pmset lidwake 1
    Thanks to Deegan for the tip.

  • Help - my display won't stay up

    I have only had my macbook pro 17" for a couple of months and just recently the display will not stay up. If I move or type or anything it just falls away from the keyboard. Does anyone know if there is a hinge or something that I can tighten to prevent this? It is still under warranty so I'm sure I could have it fixed, I just rely heavily on this machine for my business so if there is a quick fix I would really appreciate if anyone knows it.
    Thanks!

  • IMac display won't stay asleep while encoding with iDVD

    My iMac's display refuses to stay in sleep mode while I am encoding a project in iDVD. (Note that I'm referring to sleeping the display, not the entire computer.) I encode large projects overnight, and I am concerned about possible burn-in, the annoyance of the unwanted light when I'm trying to sleep, and the waste of energy. A search of the archives reveals a long history of the same problem which unfortunately has remained unsolved.
    I have tried the following with no success:
    1. Ruled out accidental mouse/keyboard strokes as the problem
    2. Used Hot Corners to initiate sleep (wakes back up after 5 seconds)
    3. Setting the sleep display timer to 1 minute in the Energy Saving settings
    4. 3rd party app and widget "Sleep Display" (only works for 10.4 Tiger apparently)
    Does anyone have any new ideas about this bug/problem? Does it only affect iMacs?
    Thanks

    How can you be sure? It may be some system operation that's doing it.
    This may also prevent the display from sleeping, but the next time you're doing this you might launch Activity Monitor and order the process list by CPU. Then when the display wakes up, note what processes (besides the DVD encoding software) are using non-trivial amounts of CPU time.

  • IMac G4 Display Won't Stay Lit

    Hello all. Several months ago my iMac G4 FP display began flickering intermittently, and eventually got more frequent over time. Then, eventually, the display would just go black at random times. I found that I could temporarily restore the display by putting the machine to sleep and then waking it back up; however, this annoying condition also became more frequent. Now, the screen is more or less black all the time. Whether I put it to sleep and wake it up, or shut it down and power it back up, the display becomes visible just briefly at the start and then blinks out completely. Shining a flashlight into the display I can see (barely) the desktop and icons and all -- and everything, including the boot-up process, appears to be functioning normally -- but without the flashlight I just can't see anything and the machine is pretty much unusable. I've tried restting the PRAM (no effect) but have not yet tried a PMU reset. Any ideas on what's happening here and what I can do about it? Should I try the PMU rest? I've heard it might be a backlight/inverter issue (or possibly a logic board problem), but I'm still seeking opinions. I appreciate any ideas/insights anyone can provide!

    You should do the PMU reset.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1712
    If that does not help, the most likely problem is either the CCFL (the lamp or lamps used for backlighting) or the inverter (which provides power to the CCFL). Since the problem occurred gradually, I don't think the problem is related to wiring or connections.

  • Resolution won't stay on "Default for display" setting upon restart

    I have a Macbook Pro 13" 2014 edition with Yosemite.
    I have a problem in that my Macbook won't stay on the "Default for Display" option upon re-starting... Each time I restart the machine, I have to manually select this option (and then it works fine). Upon reboot, it always starts up as "Scaled". What can I do to make it start up as "Default for Display"?
    I noticed this problem started happening a few weeks ago when I had connected my MBP to an external projector. I did have to change around the display settings then. But now that I don't have it connected to any external display, i'd like it to default to "Default for Display" upon re-starting.

    Thanks for that... It led to me solving the issue.
    If you care to know the full story... Once I did those steps, I realized something important I didn't notice before... Upon restart, the machine would indeed to startup in "best for display"... You can tell by the "high resolution" of the background image and dock-icons, etc... The screen would then flicker for a second and would go to "low resolution". That led me to thinking it was one of my startup apps that was causing the problem... And thus not related to my connecting to a projector like I thought, nor to the actual restart of the machine itself. I then discovered the problem app ("iDisplay") and removed it from my "login apps"... and problem solved.
    Thanks!

  • Imac display won't power up or stay on when it does

    imac display won't power up or stay on when it does

    Have you checked the Energy Saver settings? System Preferences / Energy Saver.
    If the settings are what you want, you can try this. Change them to anything at all then change them back to what you want. The restart the computer and reset the PRAM.
    Shut down your Mac.
    Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
    Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
    Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • MBP SR display latch won't stay closed

    The latch on my new MBP won't stay closed, and the screen won't latch at all or continually pops open. This can be a real pan when the computer is on sleep. Anyone else experience this? Is there an easy fix, short of sending the MBP off for service?
    Thanks.

  • Display won't wake up

    It's a brand new notebook.I've done nothing on it, other than installing Windows updates and creating recovery disks.I set the "Turn off display after" option to 1Minute.IMPORTANT: I set display brightness all the way to zero, the lowest setting possible, using either the keyboard keys, or the brightness option in Windows.Leave the notebook idle for a minute, the display sleeps like it should (the notebook is set to sleep after 30 minutes, it's only the display that sleeps, the notebook is still awake).Move the mouse, press keys on the keyboard, the screen does not come back up. The computer is still up and running-i can toggle keyboard backlight On/Off using the keys, but the display won't wake up.Press the "Brightness +" button on the keyboard, the display wakes up. This is the only way to wake it up. The other option is to press and hold the power button, force a shut down, and start the computer again.This happens ONLY when "brightess" is set to the lowest level. If brightness is set to even one level above the lowest, the issue cannot be reproduced. Moving the mouse or pressing any key on the keyboard will wake the display up in this situation.Both Intel HD graphics 5500 and GTX 850M drivers are up to date.BIOS is up to date as well.Battery/ Plugged in does not make a difference. If the display brightness is set to lowest, the screen will ALWAYS fail to wake up, irrespective of which power source is in use. What do I do? Please don't tell me it's a minor problem and I have to live with it.There are so many minor problems with this notebook, and all these are adding up to make it a total piece of cr.. My almost 5 years old probook with a second generation core i3 CPU and no discrete GPU, is better than this brand new 5th generation core i7+GeForce GTX notebook. I'm beginning to regret this purchase. I should have gotten another probook. Thought the Envy offers a better "bang for the buck", and now i think this was a huge mistake. Anyway, any idea how i can get this fixed? Looks like a driver problem right? Or is this a hardware problem? Can someone with an Envy notebook try this out and tell me if the issue can be reproduced on their rig? It can't be reproduced on my Probook.Thanks.

    Thanks for your reply Avenger Well, I called up HP tech support.The lady took remote control of my notebook and tried numerous things in the registry (regedit).But the issue could not be solved. She then arranged for an on-site support engineer to visit my house.The Engineer showed up right on the next day, and tried the following:- Updated ALL drivers, even the ones which were already up to date!Checked with my desktop monitor, the issue cannot be reproduced on the external monitor- the external monitor will wake up on moving the mouse, but the notebook monitor stayed dim (no backlight).Opened the laptop, took out the display cable, cleaned it with some solution he had, put everything back together- issue not resolved, external monitor wakes up but notebook monitor stayes dimmed. This is not the only problem I was having with the notebook, the other problems are:Battery would stop charging when the notebook is switched OFF, and the charger is turned ON and OFF a couple of times.The battery lock doesn't "click" in place, it slides automatically to the "unlock" position, it's loose.There's a dead pixel on the display. He offered me two choices: 1> Replace motherboard (to solve battery not charging issue), replace chassis (to solve the battery lock issue), and replace display panel (to solve the dim display + dead pixel issue). =======OR======= 2> Return the whole notebook back to HP, and get a new notebook (same model) in exchange.  I picked option 2. We shared a cup of coffee, and the tech left (he was very nice and friendly). The next day, I got an email from HP, with a PDF attachment, asking me to take my laptop, along with a hard copy of the email, and payment invoice, to the HP store. HP store took my computer back, but they didn't have a replacement ready, they asked me to come after 7 days to pick up a new notebook (same model). I really loved my Envy. It's a very nice looking laptop. Hope the replacement I get won't have these weird issues. I'll update the thread when I get the replacement. Thanks for your help

    1) Padding is only placed on the top and/or bottom of the div. The elements within this div have padding on their sides. This saves you from any "box model math". Keep in mind, if you add any side padding or border to the div itself, it will be added to the width you define to create the *total* width. You may also choose to remove the padding on the element in the div and place a second div within it with no width and the padding necessary for your design.
    .content {
        padding-top: 50px;
        padding-right: 0;
        padding-bottom: 10px;

    .fltlft { /* this class can be used to float an element left in your page. The floated element must precede the element it should be next to on the page. */
        float: left;
        margin-right: 8px;
    .clearfloat { /* this class can be placed on a <br /> or empty div as the final element following the last floated div (within the #container) if the #footer is removed or taken out of the #container */
        clear:both;
        height:0;
        font-size: 1px;
        line-height: 0px;
    .header img {
        display: block;

    It's caused by this CSS rule:
    ul, ol, dl { /* Due to variations between browsers, it's best practices to zero padding and margin on lists. For consistency, you can either specify the amounts you want here, or on the list items (LI, DT, DD) they contain. Remember that what you do here will cascade to the .nav list unless you write a more specific selector. */
        padding: 0;
        margin: 0;
    Try adding this to your CSS, adjust values to suit:
    .content li {
    margin-left: 45px;
    padding-left: 25px;
    line-height: 1.5;

  • New monitor profile won't stay selected

    I've been using Snow Leopard for 2 years (Mac Mini) and had two different monitors in that time. I just got an Asus VE228 monitor and it was really bright and washed out. So I made a setting that looks good but it won't stay selected after a reboot.
    When opening the System Preferences and going to the Display section, it switches to the right profile the moment I click on the Color tab. I have to do this every time I reboot.
    Repairing permissions did not fix it. I tried making a new user and it does the same thing with that user. I tried a system reinstall and it didn't help.
    I tried a different mac mini with mountain lion and it works fine with this monitor.
    Can anybody help me get my monitor setting to stick?
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Ok I have a new plan to do this.
    It would work if Spry didn't keep overwriting my colours.
    I have spry:odd and spry:even set on this table. I have also now removed spry:select
    When someone clicks on something I make a note of the rowID and store that globally. I also set the clicked row to have the correct color and have added an id to all the rows which includes their rowID so I can easily do a document.getElementByID to find the row that should be selected.
    Now I have added an onPostLoad to the notification which finds the correct row by the id I have set and then sets the color. If I put in an alert directly after I can see that this has worked.
    The problem is that spry then overwrites the background colour with the spry:odd and spry:even colours.
    So... what I need to know now, is how I can do something to the row directly after spry has finished setting colours.

  • Air 3.7 issue, radio won't stay on anymore, random time shut down???

    Hi,
           I installed Air 3.7 earlier, now my internet radio won't stay on,sometimes it'll work for 20 seconds, and then  it'll work for 20 mins.  Usually I can listen all night, but so far in the last 2 hours I've had to restart Radio 27 times so far.  I just wondered if any one had any ideas.  I have tried uninstall/re install etc, but it does'nt seem to make a difference.   My radio updates automatically, so I don't think it will let me run the previous version. Can anyone help?

    Thank you for the response. I bought the card on ebay from an outfit called Powerbox Technology in Grand Forks, ND. Here is what they said the in the auction description:
    The item being sold is a BRAND NEW ATI Radeon 9200 128MB DDR AGP dual monitor video card with VGA, DVI-I, and S-Video ports. The auction includes a DVI-I to VGA adapter so that two VGA monitors can be used at the same time and a s-video to rca adapter cable. The card can operate in independent "extended desktop" dual monitor, "mirror desktop" dual monitor, or single monitor mode. The card is Quartz Extreme compatible in OS X and is VersaVision compatible with the newest version of ATI Displays installed.
    We guarantee that this video card will work in any G4 Cube or G4/G5 Tower with an available AGP slot that is running any version of OS 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, or OS 10.4. We have personally tested one of this model in a G4 Sawtooth 2X AGP, G4 Quicksilver 4X AGP, G4 Cube, and G5 8X AGP Tower. Please note that if you install this card into a G4 Cube you will need to remove the metal bracket.
    The item being sold is a PC video card that has been professionally converted by a Mac technician and tested in the systems stated below. Apple never made an AGP version of the 9200. We have tested one of these cards extensively and have found no problems in OS 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, or 10.4.
