My distorted FCE QTs, again!!

I have mentioned this problem here before. I cannot get FCE to produce properly formatted QTs. The problem seems definitely to be with FCE and not my burning software (Toast).
My camera is a True widescreen sony HDR-HC96 (current model). Easy Setup is set to DV-PAL Anamorphic as advised by Tom. (I have tried DV-PAL but the Canvas does not display properly). I capture and edit in the usual way, with some transitions and a fade-to-black (by lowering the opacity) - about 5 minutes of video. I then do FCE > Export > and then either:
(1) > Quicktime Movie (there are no relevant options)
Result: QT Player window and the video is 4:3, squashed left/right (people look tall and thin). On TV, full height, cropped left/right, squashed left/right
(2) > Using QT Conversion (format = QuickTime Movie)
I chose:
Format: QuickTime Movie
Options > Movie Settings > Video Settings: Compression: DV PAL, Frame Rate: Current, Compressor: Quality: Best, Scan mode: Interlaced, Aspect Ratio: 16:9
The preview on that options window shows the video's image as true 16:9 (no black bars, no cropping. The movie Settings window now confirms all the settings by listing and adds:
Dimensions: 720x576 (1024)x576); (Compessor: Native); Scale: Letterbox.
Result: QT player window is 16:9 but the video is 4:3, squashed (people look tall and thin). On TV: black bars top, bottom, left & right. Image not cropped, squashed left/right.
(3) > Using QT Coversion (format = DV Stream) (as advised by Apple)
DV Format: DV; Scan mode: Interlaced; Aspect Ratio: 16:9; Preserve Aspect Ratio Using Letterbox, is checked).
Result: Same as (2).
All this does not seem normal behaviour for a commercial software.
I have tried using QT Pro to convert (1) to DV but no luck. I have trashed FCE's three preferences. I have not re-installed QT (7.1.1) because I have recently bought QT Pro and from previous experience when upgrading, re-installing it will destroy the Pro. I was recommended to use myDVDEdit but the settings in its manual were already set in the DVDs. Weirdly, I have a project whose exported QT shrinks to 4:3 momentarily whenever a transition or a fade-to-black appears (another poster has had that problem). I have tried several format settings on my TV and my standalone DVD player. I tried Anamorphicizer once but no result.
I don't see what more I can do. Surely there is someone on this forum who can produce proper QT files from FCE? Apple Care phone line assures me that iDVD can accept QT files from FCE, but FCE won't produce proper files. THAT's the problem. Even if DVD Studio Pro (Tom suggested it some time ago) could accept these distorted files, it is far too expensive now it is available only as part of a big package costing 800 GBP. FCE is useless to me in this state.
There is lots of discussion on the iDVD forum about this problem. It seems to me that Apple are not yet fully aware of Widescreen material. (But can that be true - someone told me that Apple stuff works straight out of the box.)
Is everyone out there in FCE world producing proper 16:9 QTs from FCE effortlessly? Can anyone help?
Or is the solution for me to to abandon widescreen and shoot only in 4:3, until Apple become widescreen literate?
I really need help, IF there's a solution. Thanks.

A.Yes, how does it get letterboxed etc. The project in FCE (which I have used for my experiments): its bin in the browser containing the clips had Anamorphic checked in Item Properties before I exported as a QT movie. It still does. However, the Segments into which it was split by DV Start/Stop Detect did/do not have their Anamorphic column checked.
Should I check them nanually?
You say: "That can either be done in FCE before export or is done by the DVD authoring tool that tells the display how to handle the material." As it was done in FCE (see paragraph above) why did it not result in the video being 16:9 when it was burned? Could it be that FCE did not pass on the flag (or whatever) to the DVD burner?
If so, how can I manually pass it on when I load FCE's QT video into it?
B. I have just looked at the anamorphic column for the reimported QT material and it was not checked. I deleted its clips in the Timeline, checked the anamorphic column in the browser, dragged the reimported QT material back into the Timeline and it now displays in the Canvas as 16:9 So that solves the problem of FCE not displaying the reimported QT material properly.
But, since the reimported QT material did not arrive with its anamorphic column checked, this surely means that the QT material when exported by FCE did not have its anamorphic info checked. I am not surprised that the burner treated it as 4:3.
So, the burning question seems to be: how do I get FCE to export its QT material with anamorphic embedded in itself so that the burner can know that it is anamorphic? Checking the anamorphic column seems ineffective.
I am studying the tutorials for myDVDEdit to see if I can force the burned DVD (as a DMG) to go anamorphic which I think is what myDVDEdit does (although when I tried it last time the settings that it recommended were already in the DVD).
In the meantime, I would be grateful for your answers and comments on the above.
Thanks.

Please help! I installed iTunes on my new laptop and now any CD played through iTunes as well as ALL my DVDs sound scratchy or choppy. I restored my system to the day before I installed iTunes and the problem is gone. How can I install iTunes to prevent this sound distortion from occuring again? THANK YOU!

  • FCE 3.5 won't open after installing ProKit upgrade

    Hey all
I downloaded and installed using software update what was called ProKit 4.5 (or something like that). Now I can't seem to re-start FCE 3.5. I did try to re-install it but nothing- it'll startup but then not open. Any ideas?

    wow. no help.
I did find a way to get my FCE working again. After trying to re-install ALL of FCE, LiveType and Soundtrack, it still wouldn't open. So I deleted my personal preferences (the folder held in my profile Library preferences folder) and then it would start. Not sure what in that folder caused it not to open, but maybe someone with the same problem will take a look at deleting it.
    My project was still OK.

  • KNOWN PROBLEM BUT NO SOLVING: FCE CRASHES ON QUICKTIME CONVERSION EXPORT

    Hi to all,
i'm an italian new user. I already use FCP on my Mac Pro 2007,and i purchased FCE for my new MacBook 2008 3GB Ram.
I use Snow Leopard for both machines. FCE is installed only on MacBook. The issue is:
When i put ANYTHING on timeline (effect, clips of ALL formatsetc) indipendently from Sequence presets,FINALCUT EXPRESS CRASHES IMMEDIATLY WHEN I TRY TO EXPORT TO "QUICKTIME CONVERSION". No messages,no report, nothing.
I searched and read many pages of this forum,i found a similar thread where the suggestions were the erase of preferences in Libray and reinstalling. I DID THAT but FCE crashes again.
I'd like to resolve the problem on this machine, because i will use FCE on this computer.
Follow, there is a sample video of my problem,i captured it for this thread. I hope will help you to understand exactly i want to repair:

    Tom,
This is an excellent tip. I really learnt something I wasn't aware of. FCE always seemed to render anyway but it takes longer if you did not render first. But you are right. The manual mentions it as well.
Anyway, it does not explain really why, with Quicktime X installed, I and others experience FCE crashes. Before with Leopard , FCE really never crashed.
Contrary to what I mentioned, I still experience crashes, also after full rendering. Strangely enough, it does not happen all the time. It seems difficult to reproduce the circumstances when FCE crashes on export. Any suggestions?

  • FCE is constantly crashing

When I am editing on the timeline I keep getting the evil multicolored pinwheel. This happens when I am trying to navigate through my video using the playhead and especially when I add effects. Eventually, FCE just crashes. I'm using an iMac, OS X Version 10.5.8. I am also using an external drive as a scratch disk, which is a 1TB Seagate GoFlex. I bought a USB 3 cable with it but I didn't realize that my mac doesn't have a port for that so it is currently connected into thte USB 2 port with 480 mb/s top speed. My RT settings in FCE are set to safe RT, dynamic playback video quality, and dynamic playback frame rate. I used to have it on unlimited RT but FCE would pop up with a message suggesting I change it to safe. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I would normally agree with you as I previously had thought the same thing. However, after I used Preference Manager I immediately went to re-open FCE and it appeared as if I had just installed it on my computer for the first time. No project files anywhere. This is what I did: I opened Preference Manager, clicked on the "Advanced" tab, then selected "Preferences" and "Boris Plugin Preferences", then pressed the "Trash" button on the bottom left. During this I did not have FCE open or any other applications. After that I closed Preference Manager and immediately re-opened FCE. After waiting for five minutes or so it appeared that it was having some trouble opening so I force quitted it and restarted the computer. After I turned my mac back on and opened FCE once again, there were no saved project files anywhere, and trust me I really searched. However, all the render files and capture scratch files were still there. It could be possible that there is some other cause to the loss of my project but if so, I am unaware of it. Is there any way for me to recover my lost project? Thank you so much for your advice so far.
    And to Bengt:
My start up disk only has about 45 GB available. Does both my start up and my external drive need to have plenty of free space in order for the software to run smoothly?

  • FCE or DVD recorder?

This may not exactly be a FCE only question but I get great help from you all in here and I am learning the ropes on FCE and transferring vhs to DVD.
    My question is this.
If I want to make an exact replica of a vhs tape, am I better off just using a vhs/DVD recorder combo and just copying the vhs directly to DVD? Or is there a benefit to using FCE?
I have begun the process of transferring old VHS tapes to DVD and am starting to wonder if the lengthy process of using FCE to capture the video then use TOAST to burn the DVD is worth it. I also wonder if the video quality would be better/same or worse if I just used the DVD recorder?
I don't know enough about capturing and transferring analogue video into DV to know whether or not it loses any image quality in the process, that is why I'm wondering about using the DVD recorder option vs. FCE.
Again, I realize this isn't FCE specific so I hope I don't offend anyone by placing this question in here but I appreciate any help/advice you have to offer.
    Thanks,
    Ehren

OK, the quality going from the tape player to DVD was as good as could be expected. I doubt anyone could tell the difference viewing the DVD vs. the original footage.
    BUT -
If you are thinking that at some time you are going to want to edit this material, *than do not, repeat, do not convert it to DVD first. You are opening up a giant bag of hurt to do so.* Continue on with the method you are currently using to ingest the footage to FCE, and save those ingested files on an external drive to edit later. Make a copy of your external drive so in case something happens to the first external, you have a backup copy.
Going to DVD and then attempting to reconvert the video from the DVD is a time consuming and video degrading process - if you intend to edit, I repeat, do not go to DVD first. When you go to DVD, you are converting the video to an MPEG format, and MPEG is for delivery, not editing. The fundamental structure of the video gets changed, and when you try to back the other way - from DVD to a format you can edit in FCE, you will see the effect of the conversion.
Your other option is to do both methods - dub the tapes to a DVD recorder to make quick DVD copies, then at your leisure ingest your tapes into FCE.
I did not rip the footage to make the duplicate DVDs, I just let Toast make a disc image and then make copies from the disc image to other DVDs. The DVD was never converted, it was just copied.
    Hope this helps -

  • Uninstalling FCE HD 3.5

I have been following the steps for uninstalling fce from the article in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301182. I have emptied everything i sent to the trash except LiveType.component and LiveType.framework. I keep getting a message that says "This operation can not be completed because LiveType is currently in use." I'm not sure what to do now.

It is strange you are having that problem. I un-installed my FCE HD 3.0 recently leaving LifeType. I was able to install FCE HD 3.5 without any problems. Have you tried closing down both LifeType and the computer before re-installing?
I would advise you drag the FCE HD programme to the Trash area, short down the computer, relaunch it and install FCE HD again. This might do the trick

  • ?? FCE v3.5 on a MacBook ??

I would like to buy a Macbook (not a macbook pro, i know the graphics card would definitely be compatible but i don't want to pay that much) so i have FCP6 (which im told wont work) but i also own Final Cut Express HD v3.5 (unsure if it will work).
The most up-to-date version of FCE (v4) is compatible with the intel GMA integrated graphics processor (although some fxplugs are not) but does this mean the same for the later version?
I'm being very cheap because (well i have a desktop FCS2 system) and im saving for a mac pro & z1u, so please don't try to sell me a macbook pro. I like the cheap price of the macbook and plan to use it to work on scripts, show projects on the road, and (hopefully) make simple edits with FCE.
Again, will *Final Cut Express HD* v3.5 work on a Macbook ????
    Thanx for reading and responding!
    Aaron

When the FCE3.5 page was still available on the Apple web page it said it worked with the MacBook.

  • Bringing LT into FCE.

Coming back to a project after a time away, FCE lost a LT import. Reconnect and I found it (right where it belonged) but the Connect button was grayed out. I trashed the LT file and its inputs (pix, video). Started from scratch and built it again. Try to import into FCE and get
"File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown"
I did it three times and get the same result. The LiveType files, its input files, and FCE captures are all stored on an external HD. Sniffing about, I found I had a bunch of permissions that needed repairing. Repaired them and rebooted. Deleted the LT of interest and its inputs. Built another using only text. Tried to import to FCE and again it failed.
Here is what I am doing: With FCE open and my flic accessed, launch LT. Create a two-word, two-line title, transparent background. Save it on the ext HD with the name "next game.ipr." Go back to FCE, click File, Import, navigate to next game.ipr and click. Get File Error: etc.
    What to do? Thank you

It sounds like you're working in the proper order. When you trashed preferences did you quit Live Type first, then drag the file named "com.apple.LiveType.plist" to the Trash?
If so, then go ahead and repair your permissions. Go to Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility and select your system drive click on repair permission and when it's done re-boot your your system drive.

  • Preview pdf shows different borders/ top and bottom

in iphoto, made a book, the preview pdf is not matching the book created, in a way that some top and bottom borders are NOT bleeding off the page, however in the iphoto book layout the entire photo is bleeding off the page. any ideas on pdf? I'm wondering if the pdf is showing the trim and bleed crops.

    Hi,
Thanks for the advice. Here's the latest with my 'black borders top and bottom in iMovies' problem:
I found out that if I converted the .VOB files into .DV files (using MPEG Streamclip) instead of converting them to Quicktime files, then when I import these .DV files into iMovies the black borders are no longer there. So it seems like the problem was something to do with Quicktime files in iMovies.
But then there was another problem:
After waiting quite a while for MPEG Streamclip to finish it's work of converting the .VOB files into .DV files, and then waiting a bit longer to import the .DV files into iMovies, I was ready to work on editing the clips. But whenever I added either a fade in or fade out to a clip, I saw that during the time of the fade in or out, the picture was all distorted with thin vertical lines running through the entire picture.
So I had to do more trouble shooting:
I went back to MPEG Streamclip to have a little play around in there. When I made the .DV files before I used the compressor setting DVC Pro 50, so I changed this to the DVC Pro 25. I made a short .DV clip using this compressor and tried it out in iMovies and there was no problem with the vertical line distortion. Just to make sure I made another small .DV clip using DVC Pro 50 as before, imported that into iMovies and again, during the fade in/out effects this distortion came back again. So it seems like I sorted that problem out too.
    Ian.

  • Final Cut Express Render Files

    Hello all.
Just wondering what files are okay to delete in User > Documents > Final Cut Express Documents
I already have deleted most of the files inside of the folders, such as the render files, because I've already exported them as quicktime movies. But just before, after deleting various things, (such as audio renders, auto-saves, renders,) when I next opened up final cut express, it asked for my licensing details.
Did I do something wrong, and delete something I wasn't supposed to????
    Thanks in advanced.

You can delete anything you want from the FCE Documents folder, but if you delete Capture Scratch files then any projects with those in them will be useless. Nothing in the FCE Documents folder would make it reset your licensing details.
However, if you accidentally deleted this file, FCE would again prompt you for your serial number and such:

  • Installing Final Cut Express

Here's the deal, a friend installed Final Cut Express onto my iMac for a short time for me to test the application. I liked it a lot on decided to buy it. Here's the problem, after I deleted the old Final Cut Express (registered under my friends name) from my applications folder and the icon on my dock, and then reinstalled Final Cut with the my new version it doesn't ask me for my new password.
As it boots up, I see that this latest version is still registered with my friends name. I can play around and make a few movies but every time I close the program or put my computer to sleep, and then try to open Final Cut Express at a later date, it asks me for all my info and password. I enter all the information that came with the application but it says, "Invalid password" not allowing me to use the program.
Am I uninstalling the old program wrong? Is there a process I have to do to wipe the memory of the old application off my computer before I install the new program? Do you think its a bug?
    Thanks. Newman

Hello, thanks for your guidance but it didn't work.
I followed the instructions from the link you provided and reinstalled FCE but it still started up with my friends name as "licensed to", without asking me for the serial number.
So, I tried again, only this time I deleted all the packages and files from both the HD library and my User library. (I found that there was still FCE files in my "User" library as well) I emptied the trash of all the old files and installed the FCE disk, reinstalled it and started up FCE once again. And again, it was licensed to my friend's version instead of recognizing my new version.
Im kinda loosing it, because every few days, when FCE is updated I go to launch the application (still licensed under my friends name) but it asks for the serial number and all my info - which is says is invalid.
Any idea what is happening here? Should I delete all FCE files and then archive and install? AHHHHH!

  • Timeline Clip Encoding

This queery is pertinent to CS4 in particular.
In previous versions of premiere pro2 and cs3 if I wanted to export a series of small eg. 10 second clips from the timeline to use in another app I would use the export movie option or adobe media encoder. This would be pretty much quick and efficient.
I'm wanting to use CS4 to do exactly the same thing. The problem is the clip is placed in the render queue and I start the app but it seems to take around 10 minutes to export for example an 8 second clip.
In this case its a HDTV project and I'm exporting MPEG2 1440X1080 25fps (same as the project video)
Why the long, long time to wait to export such small sections. The system is running a Q6600 Quad 2.4mhz, 4gb ram on WinXP32bit.

    What a coincidence!
I can't guarantee trashing the prefs will help you but it certainly helped me 5 minutes ago!
Having replied to you I clicked on the FCE icon in the dock to make FCE visible again (I had hidden it earlier).
It did not re-appear and I could do absolutely nothing with it.
Eventually I made it Force Quit, restarted it, hid it and once again it did not re-appear.
I went through the whole process again with no luck so I trashed the preferences.
Result ...... I can now hide it and make it come back normally!

  • Final Cut Express render fault in Snow Leopard

I am only able to perform a Full Render in FCE4. If I wish to "Render Selection" or "Render Only" the render window briefly flashes before disappearing without rendering anything. Full rendering is obviously not a god thing as it takes ages each time, and creates massive files which are not necessary.
Any ideas... (I've tried binning all the pref files and all the usual stuff).
I have rebooted in 10.5.8 and all is working fine, so this is definitely a Snow fault.

You can delete anything you want from the FCE Documents folder, but if you delete Capture Scratch files then any projects with those in them will be useless. Nothing in the FCE Documents folder would make it reset your licensing details.

  • IPhoto Slideshow to Final Cut

I've been trying various custom options but so far have failed to get a satisfactory quality when I import an iPhoto Slideshow (QuickTime Mov) into FCP 7.  I'm using iPhoto 8.1.2
The project I'm working on is DV Pal 4.3.  The default 'Export>Display' option doesn't produce good results and also dosn't have the correct fps for Pal.
I tried matching my sequence exactly - DV Pal, 4.3, 25 fps - this didn't need a render but again very poor results.
I tried a higher quality setting (1440 x 1080, 4.3, 25fps, H.264) which looks great as a self contained QT Mov but is stretched to 16.9 for some reason when imported into FCP.  I resized the frame using the distort tool but again poor quality
Wondered if anybody had success in this area?

I tried this, as I say, but didn't have much luck.  Now looking at a 3rd party plug in
