My Dock appears to have crashed and doesn't automatically re-launch...

My Dock appears to have crashed and whereas I would normally expect it to re-launch itself and re-appear, it's not doing anything... It's just not there. Moving my mouse to the bottom of the screen does nothing. Attempting to toggle the "automatically hide and show" option does nothing. It's not showing up in Activity Monitor's processes, and trying to kick it back into life by adjusting the System Prefs > Dock settings doesn't work either. I also can't Ctrl-Tab between apps.
Is there some way I can force-launch it with Terminal or something?
Bear in mind though that I know NOTHING about Terminal, and would need to be given precise instructions on how to do this, or else I'm likely to end up erasing my hard drive or something, I just know it...
Any help would be appreciated, thanks - except for a complete system re-start, that is, as I have a whoooooole bunch of movie files being processed and need to leave this running for the next 12 hours or so, but I would like to have access to my Dock in the meantime...

Hold the power + and - buttons at the same time for approx 15 seconds. This is like rebooting a PC.

I am running safari 7.0.6 with IOS 10.9.4. after the mac has been asleep and I log on I cannot open safari as it appears to have crashed. the workaround to this is to reboot the IOS and log back in after which safari will open. Any ideas on how to resolve this?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • How do I fix: DirectoryServices: Job appears to have crashed: Bus error

Can anyone help with this problem? The only solution I have found is to erase and reinstall the OS. A reinstall alone will not fix it.

  • HT1420 How do I deauthorize the use of itunes on computers which have crashed and are no longer accessible??

How do I deauthorize the use of itunes on computers which have crashed and are not accessible??

Individual computers can only be deauthorised directly on them, but if you have 2 or more computers authorised then you can log into your account on your computer's iTunes (Store > View My Account) and 'deauthorise all' (which you can do once every 12 months) and you can then authorise/reauthorise the computers that you still have and need : authorising and deauthorising.
Deauthorising a computer doesn't remove any content from it, it just means that you can't use iTunes content on it until you reauthorise it.

My Ipad2 is always restarting, but only appears the apple symbol and doesn't starts. What can I do?

    Thank you for your reply.
I don't think it's paired with another device, as the Apple TV (3rd Gen) is the only device I have from Apple, that uses this remote (unless my iPhone or iPod can pair with it) ..or maybe the remote pairs with other than Apple products ? (Can it) ?
I have tried to press the menu and right - left - up- down - middle - play/pause simultaneously without anything happening.
All I'm left with now, is a brick with a flash on it.
I never connected it to my laptop before it broke down (as it only was 2-3 days old) can that be a problem for resetting it ?

  • 2 of my authorized computewrs have crashed and burned. Need to deauthorize them before adding the new computer, as well as one of then was my main itunes computer. how do i move everything

2 of my computers have crashed and burned in the last week. One of them was my main computer for itunes. i have 2 issues:
    1) i need to deauthorize the other 2 computers in order to authorize my new one.
2)how do i move all of my music etc to the new computer?
    thank you

Thanks much, that's very helpful for step one (getting old phone onto new phone).  Very clear.
However, I still have the problem of moving to the new computer.  How do I move the sync to the new computer after the new phone is set up?

  • Finder crashed and doesn't reopen

HI, I'm using Yosemite in a macbook pro 8,1 and the Finder crashed and doesn't reopen.

Finder crashes are often caused by "Google Drive." If it's installed, I suggest you first check for an update. If that doesn't solve the problem, remove it according to the developer's instructions. You may need to start the computer in safe mode to do so. Back up all data before making any changes.
If you use Google Drive and don't want to remove it, then try deselecting the option in its preferences to "show status icons." According to reports, that may be enough to stop the crashing.
Similar cloud-data clients such as "Dolly Drive," "iDrive," "Open Drive," and "Transporter Desktop" can cause the same problem. Perhaps there are others.

Upgraded my 4s to 6.0 software and now my game apps have crashed and my wifi is on off without allowing me to turn it on? Help!!!

So your telling me that I have to restore as new and loose everything?? I do have it backed up thru iCloud but I'm out of memory so will I regain everything from the last backup date? Because I decided not to backup on my computer. I can do that now just to save my pictures. But why would apple not offer a fix other than restoring? It's their upgrade that has disabled my phone functions. This is bs!!!
Are you an apple cs support person or just a user of their products?

  • I have just downloaded a free app and there is no icon and it will not open from the list even tho it appears to have downloaded and the "open" button is available.  Does not show up when I search for it.  Plenty of memory . . .

I Have an iPad mini running iOS 7.1.2,  I downloaded a new app and it's icon does not appear anywhere ( have ~ 180 apps so not at limit) and it won't open from the purchased apps list.  It does not show up when I search for it so can't open t that way either.  It doesn't require iOS 8.  Can't delete and reinstall, cause not icon.  This is not a normal "app won't open" question.  it doesn't start the. Stop it just doesn't seem to exist.  Any help is appreciated

  • How to make dock appear in all monitors, and keep new windows to same monit

I've got an unusual setup: two screens at my desk, and another one in front of a recliner nearby so that it is not physically adjacent to the other two. This means that when the cursor moves off the side of two of the monitors and goes to the third one, I can't see it. I don't want to mirror all the displays because half the time I use the two adjacent ones from the desk, and sometimes I just want to use the one separate one. Can someone tell me if it's possible to
    1) make the same dock appear in all monitors? I want access to the dock no matter which monitor I'm looking at. Is there a utility or hack that will give me a dock in each screen?
    2) any way to have apps open and create new windows in whatever monitor I'm currently working? it's very annoying that sometimes I run a app and it throws up a window in the monitor I'm not looking at. Any way to keep it to the set of two or to the 3rd one, depending on which I'm using at the time?
    thank you!

Hi Mike, Might have a look at the bottom of this page for Dock-It 2.6.1 for Mac OS X 10.5.x and earlier...

As far as the other problems, I'd try Mirroring #1 & #3.

  • IPod- persistant crashing and doesn't mount on desktop when connected...

I bought my iPod about 4 months ago and it crashes all the time - every time i mount it i have to unplug it hold down the menu + middle button do a manual reset and then try again, when i'm updating my iPod it will also sometimes crash.
+(Not sure if this is releavant, but may help; the second time i connected my iPod to my mac after buying it, i had to do a complete software restore, as i got the message that the iPod was currupt.)+
i also have a click wheel iPod (uses FireWire), and my Dad has a iPod video 60GB (uses USB) and niether of them crash as much or need a manual reset to mount on the desktop. i'm just wondering if my iPod is faulty and i need to get it exchanged? or has anyone else experienced this with their iPod and knows a solution??
it seems to me that a FireWire connection is faster than USB, would it be possible to get my iPod Video to work over a FireWire connection, rather than USB?

Well youre not alone on this got this same problem it was working fine then had problems accesing files as harddisk use now it crashed tried restoring and thsi morning appeared to have been back to normal but NO FILES! I hope i can recover my data its so frustrating

  • Acrobat X crashes and doesn't re-open at all

Acrobat X would crash and when I try to re-open it, the little loading icon whirls for a few seconds then nothing.
This happened once before and the only way to resolve it was to uninstall Adobe CS6 suite and reinstall to fix it.. as this is a lengthy and annoying process..
Anyone know if this issue can be fixed without having to uninstall the program everytime it crashes?

    Jeff Peach wrote:

I worked yesterday, after about 30 minutes of working, crash, out of the blue, no warning just disappeared.  I think I was fastforwarding through some video (command L) with the 4 multiclip angles open.
Here is my main concern.  I have what I feel is the best machine you can get under $3000.  I have a GRaid drive with Thunderbolt which is supposed to be so fast.  I am crashing, ugh.
We have done 30+ jobs this year doing the exact same thing with an earlier 27inch imac, using Firewire 800 and we did not have this problem.  Here is what we did at least 30 times this year.
    1. 4 camera HD shoot
    2. Import into FCPX- full HD - events and projecs on external firewire 800
    3. Set up multiclip in full HD with the 4 angles
    4. Edit the show (a little punchy and slow but it worked fine)
    5. Export, compress, build dvd etc
We did this 30 times, only occasional crash.  With our new fancier imac, 24 gb ram, latest OS, Thunderbolt (woohoo) and GRaid drive we crash way more than the old system.
Either I have an issue with the computer, the drive, or?  So far, not impressed with Thunderbolt.  I relate the issue with the drive (I know this is not fair)
I realize I need to isolate the drive, Apple suggested working directly on the iMac HD, not the Thunderbolt drive. What do you think of that?
Thanks so much for your help.
Definitely something wrong here. You may try to work on the internal HD, but just as a means to test if the Thunderbolt drive is associated with the crashes. Also, you should look at the console and see the crash reports.
There are many things that could go wrong, but I am going to go out on a limb and guess that you may have some bad RAM chip. That is relatively easy to test. Remove one chip and test. Repeat. If you are lucky, you may find that your mac works fine in FCP X with 16GB and that one 8GB chip is faulty.

  • My i phone 3gs seems to have crashed and all that is on the screen is the i tunes logo and the usb cable, will i lose all my data if i restore the phone or is there a way of doing it without losing all data ?

my i phone 3gs has crashed and all that is left on the screen is the i tunes logo and the usb cable picture, when i plug the phone into my laptop its asking me to restore the phone and this will erase all my data. is there any way around this so i dont lose all my pictures ?

Connect your iphone to your computer
Hold down the home button and the power button until the screen goes blank
    Turn back on your phone.
Your phone has seemed to enter recovery mode, but its ok! The steps above should bring it out

  • My Hard drive crashed and doesn't appear on installation DVD

I was working on my Mac and accidently opened Preferences. I then clicked on the mouse/keyboard settings. I got the spinning color wheel for a while. I couldn't force quit or anything. I restarted my computer. I got the flashing folder/question mark. So I put in the 10.4 installation DVD and was going to do a disk utility on it. When it prompted to select a HD to install on, nothing showed up. I have two 150G hard drives. Earlier I was having problems with it and I was able to partition from one to two HDs. Everything was working for 4-5 months just fine until this happened. What do I do to get the Hard Drive to show up or do I need a new HD? Thanks for all your help.
    Greg

When you get sounds like that, it usually means that a HD is failing.
Partitioning means that you divide the HD space into two or more partitions. For example, on a 150GB HD, you divide it into a 100GB partition and a 50GB partition. I don't understand what you mean by "when I got it, they were partitioned together".
Do both HDs have a bootable system (10.4.x) on them? Several things to try if both have a bootable system.
Depress the Option key at startup. This will activate the Startup Manager & a window will appear with bootable HD icons. You can click on an icon & then click on the right arrow.
You can disconnect the ribbon cable from one HD & then try booting. If you get the blinking ?, then power down. Reconnect that HD's ribbon cable, & then disconnect the other HD's cable & then try booting.
     Cheers, Tom

  • Since the latest update of Firefox was installed on my Windows Vista Home Premium system it appears to be crashing and sometimes plays up by not opening requested sites in new windows, tabs etc. Should I uninstall and reload Firefox??

Also when closing tabs and windows the screen appears to momentarily go a blue color. This same blue color can also be seen when Firefox appears to crash or stall. If you try to open a new tab or a new window there appears to be some hesitation before the new window opens and sometimes the new window or tab simply refuses to open-you then have to shut down Firefox and restart to improve this.
    Rgds

Thanks Alan I tried disabling several items so far and the situation has improved but still not as stable as I would like. Systematic approach is the key here so I'll continue with a process of elimination.
