My Dock is Broken

Hello, all.
I recently upgraded to Leopard 10.5.6 from Tiger 10.4.11 and I think I broke my Leopard dock.
I was trying to customize it and got really annoyed with the Downloads and Documents stacks/folders, so I dragged them out of the Dock.
Now I can't add anything (the Documents or Downloads folders, or ANY folders, for that matter) to my Dock.
Can anyone help me figure out how to fix this without doing a full re-install?
I really prefer the Dock functionality of Tiger over Leopard and may just downgrade if I can't resolve this.
Thanks in advance for any help.

In Tiger, I used to have a folder of frequently-used Apps (filled with aliases) and my Docs folder both in the Dock, and both of those folders were "burrowable" if you clicked on them and held down the mouse button, and I didn't realize just how much I relied on those burrowable folders until I "upgraded" to LeopTard.
You can still have your "burrowable" (hierarchal) files but there's no need to make the aliases, 10.5 will do it for you. Just drag your apps folder to the dock. Or your select whatever apps you choose and put them in that stack. Here's a quick description of how stacks work. Here is a bit more. Here is a bit more.
It is a *single click* on your mouse to display a hierarchal menu. Click and hold will display a choice of prefs for your stack.
One word of warning if you are thinking of reverting to 10.4...
Read about downgrade installs
"You should not reinstall an earlier version of the same software over a later version. These "downgrade" installs may seem to work, but Apple does not test nor recommend downgrade installations in most cases. Some installers prevent downgrade installations. If you need to reinstall an earlier version of Mac OS X, erase your disk first or choose the erase option in the Mac OS X Installer. Be sure to reinstall any software updates after reinstalling the operating system."

  • Dock cable broken after only 1 month of use

I use the dock cable to connect my ipod classic 80gb to the sony stereo in my car with the usb port. After 1 month of use the cable doesn't connect to the stereo anymore and say Usb not device and only if i put the cable in a strange position it works for sometime and than again usb not device , than it works and after a bit it doesn't work anymore.I try to connect to itunes but the problem is the same. The cable cost €19 and i don't want to buy another because surely after a month it will be broken again so i just want to know why this happen.Someone can give me an advice?

Can you try eBay for the docking cables, since you sound like a cable destroyer.
I think on eBay, the cables are less than €9 or if from some Oriental countries less €1 which maybe where your fragile cable comes from.

  • My Dock is broken. Stacks don't work, either. A little help? :(

    Right, here's the problem:
    http://www.birchlabs.co.uk/Dock1.png
The transparent black bezel is... messed up to the extent that it's painful to look at. If that were the only problem, I could put up with it, but it gets worse.
    http://www.birchlabs.co.uk/Dock2.png
That's a stack. All I get is the broken bezels. No file names, no icons... I've got nothing. It's unusable (grid mode works fine, in case you're wondering).
Also, if you look in that picture, you'll notice that my separator has become invisible. What gives?
Note that I've only had this computer for a few hours. I transferred to it from my G5 iMac which ran Tiger. None of those Dock problems occurred immediately, I think they might've happened after I ran various full-screen programs - Joost, Halo, and the Java app Dofus Arena come to mind.
Also (though I don't think this is a bug), the shadows on the Dock icons look really horrible now, and I really struggle to figure out which apps are open (my screenshot should vouch for that; I'm pretty sure it's a lot less visible than it's meant to be).
I've rebooted and I've repaired permissions. I've installed all updates. I've done hours of Googling and checking the support forum, all to no avail. Could somebody please shed some light on this problem?

Huh. A few minutes ago, whilst I was doing nothing out of the ordinary, the screen went black, the computer stopped responding, and kept replaying the last half-second of sound it'd made on a loop. I force-rebooted, and now all of those problems are fixed. :/
What can I say... my computer is self-healing?

  • Ipod dock connector broken, plz help!

my ipod charger port/dock connector is broken, some pins were bent.. ive mde an appointment with apple to get it fixed, but how much would it cost (without warrenty) and how long will it take?

Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for $199 for a 64 GB one and $99 for the others. They do not fix yours.

  • Why do some icons in applications dock appear 'broken'

From time to time when installing an app on the iMac and then clicking the dock application I find that when the grid of apps is displayed that the icon appears somewhat 'greyed out' with a circle and diagonal bar overlaid.  What causes this.  So far, this has only happened with a few apps that I installed from non-Apple sources.  The app still works ok.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I do not have Rosetta installed on my system yet the apps I refer to all run fine. The only issue is the greyed out icon with the circle and diagonal bar (not an X).  Also, the icons are not on the dock. They are inside the Applications folder. When I click on the Application folder icon on the dock, the grid pops up. It's there that the greyed out icon is visible. If I look in the Applications folder using Finder the tiny icon is just fine.
I tried moving the 'greyed out' icon from the Dock's Application grid and dropping it on the desktop.  That works. It creates a proper icon that is a link to the app in the Applications folder.  The 'greyed out' icon still remains in the pop-up Application grid.  If I click-drag the 'greyed out' icon from the pop-up grid to the actual Dock the icon appears properly.
So to repeat, I do not have Rosetta installed and I am running Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and when I click on a 'greyed out' icon the app starts and runs OK.

  • ICal date in application icon in dock is broken

The iCal date that gets updated in the iCal application icon that sits in the dock is not working properly for me. The date is never aligned correctly. The black number is always positioned too high vertically and overlaps the red month area. I've checked iCal on other friend's machines (same OS, Leopard) and theirs display perfectly. Any idea why mine is out of whack? Please see screenshot below.
The same thing is happening to the calendar widget on my dashboard too, so it appears as though it's some system wide bug/issue.

    evolution75,
How on earth did you figure that out?!
I am a regular visitor to this Forum, and the problem you described is not rare.
How do I now go about removing duplicates?
    Just two simple steps:
    1. In Font Book, select the version of the font family that you want to use.
    2. Choose Edit > Resolve Duplicates.

  • Dock Icons broken

Upgrade install of Yosemite on my retina MBP (10,1) it worked fine for three days, now (nearly) all the dock icons are a generic gray box. Hovering over them gives a "tooltip" like indication of what app is associated, and clicking on them does launch the app. Problem persists despite restart, I will try repairing disk permissions.
Anybody else seen this bug? I searched the web without running into mention of it.

    Update:
restarted in Single User Mode, ran -FSCK, icons restored.

  • Dock "automatic hide and show" broken

    Folks:
This morning I noticed the "automatic hide and show" of the Dock is broken. No matter how long I put the mouse pointer in the area of the Dock, it doesn't pop up.
There are only two ways I can access the dock now. One is to set the Dock size sufficiently big (about 40% or more seems enough) and it simply stays visible all the time. Another, if the Dock size is set lower than 40%, is to keep the Dock preference box open and manually toggle "Automatically hide and show the Dock" checkbox.
Hmmm, I see right now that the Dock is hidden, but the name of an application is displayed just above the bottom edge of the screen. This app is launched, but I've not used it at all this morning. Yep, show the Dock, the name is in the "right" place, but it should not be visible at all.
I tried re-starting the Finder. No difference.
I just updated to 10.4x recently, and applied the latest updates as they became available (Friday, I think), so it is hard to tell what to point a finger at...
OK, I'm going to restart and see if that helps... but shouldn't have to do this. Something got broken recently.
    Henry
P.S. the OS pulldown doesn't show 10.4.8 so I can't use that to tell you I'm running 10.4.8.

Repair Disk Permissions" from Disk Utility may help you.
Also, you can create a new user account and check things there.
Last, you can trash Dock preference file from your home directory:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Dock.plist
    Mihalis.

  • My sons iPod touch stopped working, it won't charge in a docking station and the computer/itunes won't recognize it when connected.  We have tried holding the power and home button at the same time for several seconds, and the screen still stays black

My sons iPod touch stopped working, it won't charge in a docking station and the computer/itunes won't recognize it when connected.  We have tried holding the power and home button at the same time for several seconds, and the screen still stays black.  Thanks!

Hello skdog I possibly think your ipod touch is black because it has not charged. If your dock is broken it might just mean the dock will be broken and so might be the USB port. You should see an Apple shop nearby and hand it over and see what they can do. I hope this information works!

  • Dock icons are corrupted/deformed or missing.

The icons in my dock are broken, they look like static fuzz or random lines/dots.  Sometimes they disappear altogether.  They still work if I click on them, and I can see which is which when I move the cursor over the app's "icon".
I searched, but every thread I found had people's problem being solved with either restarting the machine or using "killall Dock" in the terminal.  Neither of these actions fixes my problem.
I used Time Machine to go back a week and fixed this before, but it has happened again.  I do not want to do a Time Machine restore once a week on this computer.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Ryan

You could try an SMC reset.  If the video driver was somehow getting out of whack from a power issue this may help - but it's a longshot.

    Shut down the computer.

  • Problem with Apple Universal Dock and Iphone 3G

Just bought the newest version of the Apple universal dock (revision C), so I can have one dock for my iphone and all my ipods.
It appears that even the newest version isn't 100% compatible with the iphone.
When the iphone is connected via the dock, you get no alert sounds such as for new email, text, etc..when the phone rings you DO get audio then.
Also, when you try and sync the iphone with itunes while connected, it won't sync. It just hangs and says "sync cannot be completed"....
Connecting the iphone directly via the cable to the computer solves all these issues.
They advertise this as compatible with iphone but obviously not so...

    Update:
    I've checked this:
-Aux (Dock-Connector) of the iPod has no damage, no problems playing music in the car!
-Same Problem now with iPhone. It gets charged and so, but if I want to listen to music it is very quiet, music is playing for half a second or so, after that stopped, than goes on playing for a second or so. Cracking sounds often while music is stopped.
So the Dock is broken, I guess.
Any possibility to restart/resert or so by my own or try to get it fixed by apple?
    Greetz!

  • Expose broken again

Once again, Expose is broken, using the killall dock command does not help, rebooting several times does not help. Magnification of the dock is broken, names of dock items is broken, magnification of time machine history is broken. I use no screensaver other than apple, but, have determined, this occurred right after the new safari and itunes update. also noticed the stars in time machine are moving in a jagged pattern instead of smooth. once again, i am going to do an OS reinstall to fix the issue with apples own software. Is anyone else having this annoying problem, and do you have a different fix than reloading the OS, again.

Update: last night I performed and erase and install. I created two partitions, breaking the former partition. Installed Leopard on both partitions. Created two new users on both partitions. restored my old user to one partition, rebooted and updated to 10.5.7. This might be a bit confusing, the bottom line is: I have one partition fully clean and not updated, and one partition with my user crap and updated to 10.5.7.
Okay, so when I boot to either partition or any user, the issue persists. Expose will not work. The magnifier on the dock fails along with the dock icon names not showing. Believe me, I am not use any other screen saver that what is offered by Apple, and then I only use the "computer name" saver.
So, I made an appointment for the apple store today. Because, software wise, the issues should not have been carried forward to the clean partition, nor, the other 4 new accounts I created. I would have thought, that if the ram went bad, I would have far more issues. Could this really be related to a bad location on the drive. Which, in all my expertise, I don't know if the install DVD places these files in the same location every time we re-install, if there is an OS expert out there maybe they can enlighten me. I have heard of this in the Windows world, that the same file is always written to the same location every time, by the OS install.
Also, I notice, that when at the netflix sight, the popups about each movie no longer work, just as the popups on the dock icons don't work.
I did perform a disk check when doing the erase and install, my DVD checked out okay.

  • Dock keeps rearranging items

My dock is broken. I have Safari set in my dock, but it keeps getting moved to the bottom of the dock (it's set to the left side of my monitor). I move it back up to where I want it and 10 seconds later it's back down at the bottom. My MobileMe settings are set to sync dock items, but I'm not syncing, so it shouldn't be moving it like it is. Thoughts?

Safari is a default dock item. It has to be on the left side of the dock separator.
Basically programs/apps on the left, everything else on the right of the separator.
Did you put a new icon in the dock?

I don't think this is a synch issue.

  • Nothing in the dock app's package contents.

When I go to /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app there is nothing in the package contents. I accidentally deleted the folders somehow. Now I can't change my dock preferences at all (the dock option doesn't even show up under system preferences) and the finder and trash icons are invisible. What do I do? I can't system reinstall because I don't have the installation disc anymore. I've tried making new accounts and the dock is broken on them too. I think if someone gave me a zip file of the folders in dock.app it might help?
(btw already tried deleting plist a million times so don't suggest that please)

    Get Pacifist...

then extract/install what you need from your Install Disc.

  • Connecting ipod classic 160Gb to bose sounddock

the ipod 160Gb is so thin so doesn't sit in a bose sounddock securely, have to wedge something behind it to get proper connectivity......the plastic adapter doesn't hold it upright. Any ideas?

I assume that by "plastic adaptor" you mean the one that came with your iPod 160GB Classic. It doesn't hold the iPod upright, it will be leaning back slightly. You have inserted the "Dock Adaptor" the right way round I hope?
If you have the insert (Dock Adaptor) in the correct way and the iPod is leaning backwards slightly, but no sound comes out (unless youy force the iPod upright) it sounds as thought the connector in the dock is broken.
