my download was an unknown file type and cannot be opened
Sounds like the file extension was dropped when you saved your converted document. Make sure that the .docx (Word) or .xlsx (Excel) extension appears after your file name when saving your document.
You should be able to rename the document you already converted by adding the appropriate extension. The file should then open as expected.
Let us know how it goes!

The Adobe Muse file damaged and cannot be opened. Please Help!!!
My Muse crushed on me while generating "preview site in browser" command.
After I re-started Adobe Muse, I get this message:
There are several back-up files I tested and they all had this error. Does anyone know what to do?
I have saved the site before I clicked "preview site in browser" command too.
I have about 20-30 hours of work in that Muse file that has not been published anywhere.
Muse Version:Was the final successful save a Save or a Save As over top the original file?
Where are the files stored? I would not trust the hard drive / device where the files are being stored until we've had a chance to take a closer look at the files.
Please send all the files that bring up this error.
If the files are larger than 20Mb you can use a service like Adobe SendNow, Dropbox, WeTransfer, etc. Thanks. -
XML file considered "Unknown File Type"
Hi,
I have XML files that lack an XML declaration. Part of the import process, though, is an XSLT stylesheet that adds one through standard XSLT output (ie, omit-xml-declaration="no"). However, Frame still decides that it is an unknown file type and forces me to select "XML" in that dialog box.
When I run an XML file through the stylesheet manually (with another processor), I see the declaration added. Furthermore, the externally-transformed file imports without a hitch.
Any ideas why the declaration is not recognized when added by XSLT during the import process? More importantly, any ideas how to get around this?
Thanks,
RussSylvia, I used the following function, which shows the parameters for F_ApiOpen(). Note that this worked for the one problem I was having with the "unknown file type" dialog box. There are a myriad of other XML errors that can occur which you may not be able to get around.

Appset Parameters ALLOW_EXTENTIONS and DEFAULT_EXTENTIONS have PDF as a part of their respective settings. Any ideasas how to fix?
Thanks,
GregLooks like no one has the idea how pdf is showing pdf%20 instead. Maybe you need to convert the file to pdf using a pdf editing software. Unknown File Type for Adobe Classroom in a Book Fireworks
I am trying to open sand_river1.jpg cited on p. 74 of Adobe Fireworks Classroom in a Book and am getting a "Could not open file" and "unknown file type" despite the fact that the image is displaying as a thumbnail in the file browser. I get the message on both Windows and Mac Fireworks CS6. Is it possible these publication assets were not part of Adobe's QA regression? Anyway:
- I'd rather not try to fix this myself since it's an Adobe product and I can wait.
- has this problem been corrected?
- is there an errata site for the book? When I search on Google I am just sent to Amazon and bittorrent.
thanksA quick Google search for that file name confirmed the issue here, and a fixed version for chapter 4 can be downloaded at http://www.jimbabbage.ca/_files/ch4files.zip

FW MX, Mac OSX: "unknown file type" error
Hi everyone,
I'm having troubles opening a file created in FW MX.
When I first tried saving it, I got a message that the "file
could not
be found". I figured that was due to the enclosing folders
containing
accented characters and I saved it to the HD's root instead.
That seemed to work fine, however when trying to open the
file, it now
tells me "Could not complete your request. Unknown file
type."
Any ideas?
Cheers MartinHello Issebek1 and welcome to the Palm forums.
The Voice Memo application on the Treo 755p is not compatible with the Voice Memo conduit that is available for Palm Dektop on the Mac and the PC. If you need to sync voice memos, you may need to purchase a third-party application for voice memos that can sync them back to your Mac. I would check with MotionApps' mVoice.
As for the duplicate calendar records, the log indicates that you are making changes to the record on the Mac and on the Palm without first performing a HotSync after changing the appointment on either side. I would clean up the records on the Mac, and then set the Calendar conduit to Desktop overwrites Handheld and then perform a sync. Then switch the Calendar contact back to Synchronize.

Hi,
I'm trying to run one of our standard reports on IE7 on one our company PCs using the standard URL produce PDF output....
http://your_web_server:port_num/rwservlet?server=server_name&report=myreport.rdf etc etc....
Now, bearing in mind that this runs fine on every other PC in the building fine and runs perfectly ok on Firefox on the same pc, can someone pls tell me why I am getting the following pop up..
rwservlet "unknown file type"
It then tries to get me to download rwservlet onto the PC and thats it! No report run after that.
What is going on? Can someone enlighten me or even point me to an answer. I've tried searching but no joy.
ThanksAt a guess you are trying to generate an excel spreadsheet, and thats not opening in ie7, but is in firefox?
Thats when I encountered this problem.
Try this on a machine, then run again after.
Solution
To implement the solution, please execute the following steps:
In the Windows environment:
1) Start -> Run -> Regedit (to open the registry)
2) Locate the following key path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\
FEATURE_ZONE_ELEVATION\iexplore.exe
3) Change the value from '1' to '0'
4) Ensure that the following settings for the .xls & .html file types are unchecked:
a) Open Windows Explorer
b) Goto Tools/Folder Options/File Types tab
c) Select the Extension 'XLS' (or HTML) and Click on the Advanced button
d) Un-check the option 'Confirm Open after Download' & 'Browse in same window'
5) Select 'OK', then 'Apply' -
Ld: fatal: unknown file type
I am trying to link against a shared object which is created earlier in the build, and am getting the following error:
ld: fatal: file /export/home/torpey/MXLib.sunws/lib/libWkr.so: unknown file type
The error is not documented anywhere that I can find. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
(P.S. Similar code & makefiles work OK w/gcc3.2)
Build step looks like this (condensed):
CC -template=no%wholeclass -mt -i -L. -L/export/home/torpey/MXLib.sunws/lib
WorkerUDSocketClient.o RegisteredConnection.o WorkerHelper.o txnw.o

ld: fatal: file /export/home/torpey/MXLib.sunws/lib/libWkr.so: unknown file type
ld: fatal: File processing errors. No output written to /export/home/torpey/MXLib.sunws/bin/tpsworker
Running elfdump gives this:
elfdump -e /export/home/torpey/MXLib.sunws/lib/libWkr.so

an executable. For dynamic library, it should be ET_DYN.
How did you build the libWkr.so? Did you use
CC -G ? Was there any error ( either linker error or system-related
error ) while building libWkr.so? If linker thinks it is an executable,
the final linking will not work. -
Ld: fatal: file *.a unknown file type
Hello
I am using the Sun Forte 7 C compiler and have a strange linking error:
Towards the end of the build script, the following compiler directive attempts to execute:
-L/somepath -Bstatic -lnetsnmpmibs -lnetsnmpagent -lnetsnmphelpers
I get the following error message:
ld: fatal: file /emc/saffas/local/lib/libnetsnmpmibs.a: unknown file type
ld: fatal: file /emc/saffas/local/lib/libnetsnmpagent.a: unknown file type
ld: fatal: file /emc/saffas/local/lib/libnetsnmphelpers.a: unknown file type
ld: fatal: file /emc/saffas/local/lib/libnetsnmp.a: unknown file type
I looked at all of the compiler options as well as the READMEs for this compiler and have not been able to solve this problem. I thought this was the standard way to link static libraries. I added the -Bstatic option just in case and that didn't work.
Any ideas on what I'm missing?
Thank you,
dedham_ma_manThe option -lnetsnmpmibs (for example) tells cc to look for a library called netsnmpmibs. It finds netsnmpmibs.a, which it expects to be an archive library for the same computer architecture.
The file is evidently something else. Run the "file" command to find out what the file is:
% file /emc/saffas/local/lib/libnetsnmpmibs.a
It should say that the file is an "ar archive". If not, that is your problem. Somehow the expected archives were overwritten or replaced by something else.
You don't say what architecture you are using: 32-bit sparc, 64-bit sparc, or x86. Whatever you are compiling for, the components of the library must be compatible.
Run the command
% ar -t <archive>
to get a list of the components of the archive. Let's suppose one of them is foo.o.
Extract foo.o using the command
% ar -x <archive> foo.o
Run the command
% file foo.o
to find out whether the file is of the correct architecture. If not, you are looking in the wrong place for the library, or no library of the correct architecture is available. -
Trouble Opening PNGs - Unknown file type
I found this topic already on this board (a post from 2002)
but there was no usable answer.
I am using Fireworks 8 (8.0.0.777) on Windows. I have
troubles opening old pngs I created. When opening some files I get
the error message "unknown file type".
The file can be opened via photoshop or irfanview, but all
data is flat on only one layer - so this is not a solution.
It seems that the file is damaged - rebuilding the whole file
would be a lot of work. This problems occurs from time to time with
different pngs.
All files are saved on a server via our network. But this
problem occurs only with pngs and no other file-types, so I don't
think that this is a network problem.
Thanks in advance, MalteThe AD wrote:

Could not open file. Unknown file type.
The file would not open in Fireworks due to incorrect image paths. The image paths are corrected in dreamweaver and saved. The file now returns "Could not open file. Unknown file type."
So, then I made the same corrections with a text editor and saved the file. Same error when fireworks tries to open it.
in way over my head!I've had that happen too. What worked for me was shutting FW down and rebooting my machine.

Unable to open .eps file "unknown format and cannot be opened" ?
A client sent me an .eps file (logo). I tried opening it in Illustrator AND photoshop (just to see if it was saved in one vs the other program) - however to no avail.
Illustrator gives me a message "unknown format and cannot be opened"
Photoshop gives me a message "photoshop was unable to parse the postscript".
I'm using Adobe CS4, and I've never seen this message before—would love to know what this means and how to resolve?
File attached if anyone is able to open / fix it?
Thanks kindly,
ChemolThanks for the advice Scott - does compression improve the .eps? Is it
silly for me to ask them to compress it since the file is only 766 KB
(that's how big the attachment is in my email - though I am unable to open
it)?
My friend is able to open it on his end - however the 3rd person (client) is
the one who sent it, and I have already requested a different version - no
response from them yet. Unfortunately what the company "has" is what he
will likely give to me again (ie: same file / unable to open). So ... I am
curious about how I can resolve this issue on my end - if possible?
Do you know what the AI and Photoshop error messages mean? Could the issue
be a mac vs PC concern? Or is it a corrupt file? Could it be a software
version issue (old vs new) ... or Quark incompatibility?
.... just guessing at this point....Any insight as to what different
scenarios may apply in this situation would be greatly appreciated ..thank
you. -
Dreamweaver setting wrong file type and creator codes
First of all, I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.2 on an Intel-based
Mac, with Dreamweaver CS3 9.0 build 3481.
I have a site defined where I connect to my web server via
FTP. On my server, I just upgraded my forum software to PHPBB 3.0,
which created a new /forums/ directory. My plan is to use
Dreamweaver to download that new /forums/ directory to my local
site where I can edit the files. Inside the forums folder are
several types of files, like ".php" files, ".htm" files, ".gif"
files, etc.
So, upon downloading the /forums/ folder to my local machine
by dragging and dropping it (in Dreamweaver) from the remote site
to the local site, I noticed that Dreamweaver insists on setting
HFS file type and creator codes for files it recognizes, based on
the filename extension.
I've connected to the same server using the Finder and
Transmit, and copied the remote /forums/ folder over to my local
machine. Neither of those copies have files with file types and
creator codes set, meaning they aren't actually set on the remote
files and that this is indeed something Dreamweaver is doing on the
fly as it downloads the files.
I'm wondering if there's any way possible to disable this
behavior, and just download the files like they are on the server?
(File extension only). To make matters worse, on my Intel-based
Mac, it's not even setting the proper codes, as you can see in the
following image:
http://homepage.mac.com/mdouma46/images/dreamweaver.png
Notice for the ".php" document, it's attempting to set a file
type of 'TEXT' and a creator code of 'DmWr' (DreamWeaver's creator
code), but because the Dreamweaver developers didn't bother to take
into account the byte-ordering differences between PowerPC Macs and
Intel Macs, the codes are written in reverse: 'TEXT' becomes
'TXET', and 'DmWr' becomes 'rWmD'. (If you're going to use
low-level routines such as FSSetCatalogInfo() to set the file types
and creator codes, you need to call CFSwapInt32HostToBig() on the
OSType values before doing so, to make sure they're in Big-endian
format).
Anyone know where the conversion information is stored?
Thanks in advance.....Creator codes are totally deprecated in snow leopard. as for a workaround you can use something like this.
<pre style="
font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
font-size: 10px;
margin: 0px;
padding: 5px;
