My drive went dead!!

Im ******! My Macbook 13 in super drive just went dead! Anyways, I dont think I want to buy and install a another "superdrive," so I was thinking of taking my super sweet SATA DVDRW/CDRW drive out of my Windows machine, sticking it into an external FW case. Will this work? Or will the Macbook not accept it? Also, lets say I want to reinstall OS X, can I do it using the external drive, or does it have to be an onboard CD/DVD drive?? Thanks!
GC

I don't know for sure if USB would work or not, but if it does, it will take a long time to load Leopard onto the HDD that way. FireWire is so much faster and it is self-powered through the FW connection, whereas USB is not.
I do know that you can not boot from a USB external HDD while running Tiger. Leopard now allows that, but the previous paragraph still has merit. Very slow.
Anyone out there know differently, please set me straight.
I for one, love FW.
Good Luck.

  • My external drive went dead after installing Leopard

    Hey guys
I'm very bummed out, my external HD went dead after installing Leopard on my Dual 2.3 GHz PowerPC G5. It was working perfectly fine before, had not a single problem with it but now, I've just lost all my work. I tried Disk Utility from the disc with no luck, it gave tons of errors and it say it couldn't be repaired. Now, it doesn't show up at all. Every single time I connect it I get a message saying the disk I inserted is not readable by the computer. This is a 200GB Maxtor external drive. Is there anything I can do to fix it? Any hardcore Software to retrieve my files? I'd appreciate if anyone can help me with this.
    Thank you in advance

Movies are currently a one time download. Because of this, it is your responsibility to back them up so when something like this happens, you can simply copy them over the new drive.
You can't download them again with purchasing once again.

  • IMAC 24" screen went dead. Can I buy a mac compatible monitor and still use the IMAC hard drive?

IMAC 24" screen went dead. Can I buy a mac compatible monitor and still use the IMAC hard drive - which is still working? I took it to the Apple store and they quoted $500+to replace the monitor. No help as usual. Can I buy a MAC compatible monitor ($189) and use it as a primary monitor? Can I set it up if the screen on the IMAC is dead? Any other solutions?

The only negative to not having the original drive will be the work needed to reinstall all the apps and reconfigure to your liking. You will also have to decide whether to stay on Lion (which you should update to 10.7.4, BTW) or bite the bullet and take a leap of faith on Mountain Lion.
In either case, to simplify matters you would do well to concoct a Lion or ML bootable installer on a USB stick. In either case, you need to get the corresponding installer downloaded onto the hard drive and, instead of running it to execute the install, extract the coveted InstallESD.dmg image from which you construct the bootable installer. See here for details: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17782820#17782820  The procedure applies the same to both of the latest cat flavors.

  • Hard Drive is dead - deciding what to do next

    Hi all,
My computer is a 12 inch Powerbook G4. My hard drive is dead.
Here's what happened. Night before last my powerbook was freezing randomly. In retrospect the HDD was making some clicking noises but not consistently. Following morning it freezes one last time. On reboot, it won't finish starting up.
I run Tech Tool and all the HDD scans fail. I use Disk Utility on the Tiger OS CD and it also comes back saying that the HDD has failed. All the repair attempts by these tools fail. I read some articles here in the forum that led me to pay the $5 and download Data Rescue II boot cd file to try and see if I can recover anything. I'm burn the disk image to a cd, but am unable to boot off the disc.
I make an appointment at the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store to basically confirm what I think has happened. They hookup their firewire drive and see that basically there is nothing viewable on the HDD and that it is dead. Since I'm out of warranty, Apple's repair option is to pay around $300 to send it to their repair facility. I'm thinking I may do the replacement myself.
So, my understanding is that the drive that's in there is a 60GB 4200-rpm Ultra ATA/100 hard drive. My question is can I upgrade to faster, larger capacity drive? How do I know what drive will work?
Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

If you want size, definitely get the 250GB drive. It is the largest-to-date drive. I remember just "weeks" ago when I recommended this option to some folks, people thought I was fibbing since the previous option for largest drive was 160GB.
They also thought I might have been confusing it with the SATA drive for MacBook and MacBook Pro computers.
If you're looking at speed, then it's the 100GB drive at 7200RPMs. I'm sure eventually, they will come out with a higher capacity for the 7200RPMs, much like the 250GB story.
I debated over that myself, when I decided to tackle upgrading the drive on my other PowerBook, the 15-inch one. Those are easier. I don't think I will ever pop open the 12-inch PowerBook to do any work on it.
250GB gets space. I wanted it, but at the time, didn't have the money. I got a great deal on a Seagate 160GB 5400.3 RPM drive (the ".3" stand for the version drive you get). It was less than retail because of a price match, plus a store credit coupon I had.
So I went for it. Plus, this drive had Seagate's "perpendicular recording" technology that makes it just as fast--so reviews said--as the 100GB 7200RPM drives.
And 5400RPM vs. 7200RPM drives are really nominal in speed difference. It's not noticeable, according to my research. Where it is noticeable is video editing, and intense tasks. Then there's the factor of higher capacity drives with slower speeds, beating out lower capacity drives with higher speeds.
But I don't want to go in to that. I'll be talking all day!

  • MacBook just went dead! Please help.

OK I've been using Macs since 1986 and have done techie stuff for many Mac users but this issue has me stumped. I have a MacBook black, 2.0GHz C2D, 120GB drive, 1GB ram, 10.4.11. I bought it new from Amazon this past April. This Mac has been running flawlessly since its purchase accept for a few random not waking from sleep issues. Closing the lid and opening it after a few seconds would wake it up. It has a 10GB Boot Camp partition running XP which I seldom use. I just recently updated to 10.4.11.
The Problem: While in use the machine just went dead, sort of. The screen went black and no sound is heard. I tried to wake it using a number of keyboard moves. When all failed I tried to hold the power key down to shut it off and restart, but nothing happened. The only sign of life is when I mess with the power button there is a flashing green light coming from the small pin hole just to the right of the video camera. There are actually 2 of the pin holes to the left and right of the camera but the flashing only comes from the right one. This happens while plugged in or running from the battery. We usually run it with the power cord plugged in and this was the case when it went dead on us. I know it's not completely dead because of this light activity. There is also some random light activity coming from the small row of lights on the face of the battery. I haven't really noticed what triggers those lights I just noticed they came on randomly when I would look at the bottom of the machine now and then.
Any ideas on what's going on and how to get me running again?

the same thing happened to me and after the multiple tech steps to revive a dead beast....i went to the genius bar at my nearest apple store....the tech agreed it was a faulty motherboard as i was getting NO power to even the keyboard. we also tried a firewire target disk mode to see if i can even access the HD. we took out the HD to verify that the data was still in fact intact. but oddly enough nothing happened. to give some insight i was importing video from my mini DV cam and it didi a semi kernel panic greey screen shut down and never came back up
the funny thing was, i ended up helping other people who were coming in for service while they were working on mine...6 people in all...and when i left, some of the people still waiting were saying where's the genius going? LOL!
i pray they will upgrade my logicboard to the SR chipset one.....i want i want i want an early xmas present!

  • Just went dead .

My ibook G4(details below)went dead without any obvious reason.
I was downloading some update around 15MB .I left it for a while made sure that the battery does not go down, I put the power adopter to charge it. Every thing was going fine. I came back to screen frozen. I had to switch it off by disconnecting the battery.
Put the battery on switched it on but nothing. I tried control command,P and R all pressed simultaniously and power button to start , it started but haf way through the initialising it stopped. with cursor arrow in the top left hand corner but nothing happening.
I tried control, command and Esc pressedalong with power button but the same result.
Is there some thing I can do to start it?
Please tell me :How to start it in the safe mode?
Is there any possibility of getting it to start this side of reinstallation?
I had loaded the new printer's software the same day. But it worked fine.
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    shafiq,
it's possible, due to the Archive and Install you've performed, that your hard drive is now overly filled with files. Open a Finder window. At the bottom of the window, it shows how much space is available. If it's less than 10% of your total capacity, you'll need to get some files removed.
If I was in your position, I'd back up my important files, then do an Erase and Install--which would take everything off the computer and just put a fresh copy of OS X on it.
You may also be able to just delete the entire "Previous System" folder once you've backed up your files.
It seems your iBook still isn't feeling tip-top, but we'll do our best to get things working properly again

  • HP pavilion laptop Dv6000's internal drive is dead

My HP pavilion laptop Dv6000's internal drive is dead, I need to replace it.
    It is a WD Scorpio WD 1200B EVS - 60UST0 120GB.
This disk is not manufactured anymore. Do you know which disk I should buy?
    Thank you.

    Hi:
You can probably get by with any 2.5" notebook hard drive 250 - 500 GB on your model series.
Keep your old drive as you will need to transfer the caddy, connector and screws to the new one you get.
    Some suggested replacements...
7,200 for best performance (slightly less battery time between charges over a 5,400 RPM drive).

You will also need a set of recovery disks which you may be able to order by reading the info at the link below:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph07143&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en
If your PC came with windows vista and you can still read the whole product key on the bottom of the PC, you can make your own Vista installation disk as follows:
If you're up to a slight but rewarding challenge you can make your own if you can read your 25 character Vista product key on the PC.
Just download the 3 files you need at the link below, and read all of the instructions to create a bootable DVD installation disk using imageburn.
Disregard the part of the text under the first screen shot about "extract the files to the Vista folder."
The files were already extracted to that folder when you ran the X14.exe file by reading the text on top of the first screen shot.
The other thing I noticed is on the 4th screen shot, where it shows Developer ID Microsoft Corporation. I had to type Microsoft Corporation in myself, and then the other codes automatically populated.
When I went to compile the ISO file, ImageBurn gave a message that about a WIM file and ISO, and if I wanted to burn it in a different format.
I selected No, make the ISO file.
It was not that hard to do. I burned both the 64 bit disk and the 32 bit disk in case I ever need them.
I tested both of them an my hp dc7100 CMT desktop PC, they worked perfectly.
When you enter the product key, it knows what version of Vista you have.
    http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/w/microsoft_os/3317.2-3-microsoft-windows-v....
After you successfully install Vista, you can then install the drivers from your PC's support and driver page.

  • T42 Just went Dead

My T42 has been working just fine for about 3 years. It just went dead and when I try to reboot it gets as far as painting my desktop wallpaper page and then just sits and spins. It never starts any apps and the HDD light stays lit constantly ... not even winking at me. Any help out there?

    Welcome to the forum!
I suspect that your hard drive is going bad. Try to remove it and boot to BIOS without it.
Good luck and keep us posted.

  • Batt went dead, recharge. Now ipod skips over only itunes songs

Hello and thanks for taking the time to read my problem. My laptop has now had multiple hard drive crashes. 4 to be exact. This last time around I have not downloaded itunes again. My ipod had all my previously purchased music on it as well as copied from CD's. Well the ipod sat for a while and the battery went dead. I recharged the battery and the ipod skips over the itunes songs but not those copied from CD's. Can this be fixed?
I don't want to download itunes and reconnect the ipod because the ipod is already on 4 different hard drives(that no longer exist). I would prefer a different media player than itunes. Any compatible with ipod?
    Thanks.

ipod skips over the itunes songs but not those copied from CD's. Can this be fixed?
Authorize your iTunes then sync the iPod.

    Would you explain?
iPods are not on or linked to hard drives in anyway.

If you have DRM protected songs, no.

    Update to iTunes 10.3.1
After you have finished, you can re download your iTunes purchases without having to re purchase.
    iTunes 10.3.1
" Download Previous Purchases. Download your past music purchases again at no additional cost. Your purchases are available in the iTunes Store on your Mac or in the iTunes app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Previous purchases may be unavailable if they are no longer on the iTunes Store."
"Available on iTunes in the U.S. and Canada only. Title availability is subject to change."

Is this is the quality & service we boost? On visiting the store we get only one reply you may write to Apple directely. we have the similar kind of problem with iPad which is being used by my wife Mr.Neelam Vij and paid Rs.16000/- to get it replaced within a year & 6months use. so in totality we have paid Rs.28500/- + Rs. 3000/- diagnostic charges.

Moreover, we have no information to contact whom. even the replace set has a warranty of only three month which further confirm that Apple itself is not confident wheather product will last after replacement for more then three month. Such kind of happening do not encourage anyone to recomend this product to anyone. Would appriciate a faster response to our problem if someone from Apple is going to read this email.

my battery went dead- I plugged in it.  several hours later I went back to it and it wasn't on. instead the only thing on the screen was a picture of the plug in and the icon itunes on top of it.  I have no idea what that means.  My phone will not turn on even after I hold both buttons. i was told a while back that the i7 program can mess this up and to hold both buttons down to reboot the phone.  I tried this but even this isn't working.  Any ideas?

Make sure you don't have another copy of Lightroom actively running on your computer. If not, find your catalog file in Finder/Explorer. Look for a file with the same name, but with a .lock extension. delete that file. Now Lightroom should open the catalog again.

  • If My external hard drive went bad can I use iCloud to still have or access all my ripped music and movies from iTunes without starting over?

Can I have access to all my imported music and movies in iTunes even though my external hard drive went bad with the acutal files, if i purchase iCloud through iTunes.

You say "ripped" music.  That is not stored on iCloud unless you subscribe to Match.  As for iTunes Store purchases:
Downloading (using iOS or computer) past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not all media formats are available in all countries (see: iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match Availability by Country - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5085); apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this).  Downloading previously purchased movies and TV shows requires iTunes 10.6 or later.  Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list (e.g., ringtones, audiobooks), or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.  Apple notes it is your responsibility to back up your purchases.
Select the iTunes Store on the left side of iTunes.
Click on Purchased on the right side under Quick Links.
You can re-download your available previous purchases.
Of course if you had a backup of your files you would have been back up adn running iTunes by the time you read all this.
