My DVD drive has problems.

I've been browsing the forums and noticed that a lot of other people have the same problem I have with the new Intel iMac 20". Everything was working great for the first 2 days. On the evening of the second day, I watched a DVD movie. When I went to use the drive the next day, it won't recognize DVDs at all. Not even the ones it recognized the first two days. CDs seem to show up fine.
I used Apple support chat where they had me create a new user to see if it had the problem as well. Their next suggestion was to shut it down, unplug it for 10 seconds, and start it up with the apple-option-p-r button process. Those didn't fix my problem so they told me to take it to a service center.
Hopefully I'll get a drive that will last longer than two days this time.
Intel iMac 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hi Don, thanks for the reply. I read in another thread here that Apple support told another user not to run an optical cleaner in the drive. I can't remember the reason. There is an apple service center two minutes from my work, so I'm just going to take it in without trying to fix it myself. Thanks for the suggestion though.

  • DVD drive has just stopped reading a DVD ( which it previously played OK ) G550

    Hello All,
I have a G550 bought 10 months ago.  It seemed to work ok but just in the last few days the DVD drive has malfunctioned. A DVD which it previously played now brings up the error message:
Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card##
By the way, this is a commercially purchased DVD   -Cagney and Lacey ! - from Amazon so there cannot be anything wrong with the disk as such ( plus, as I say, it used to play OK ).
How can I get the DVD drive to work properly  ?  Might it need to be exchanged  / repaired ?
    All suggestions gratefully received .......

Sorry  - i don't know what you mean.
I tried  checking in the list of all programs to see if there was any other software to read DVDs apart from Windows Media Player but I couldn't see any.
But anyway, why should this error message start up  now - after the same laptop has played the same DVD several times already w/o problems.    Is that a pointer to a hardware or a software  problem ?
I bought the laptop from ASDA 10 months ago  - anyone know if they will replace / repair ?  [There is no email address on their website to contact them].

  • My dvd drive has stopped working... put disk in...spits it out! Can anyone help?

My DVD drive has stopped working...put a disk in...spits it out. Can anyone help?

If you have a mid 2010 iMac, it is not PPC.  PPC refers to pre-2006.
The 2010 is getting close to the age the PRAM battery might go, so that could be at issue.
The other issue is that the drive itself could only handle up to a certain speed DVD disc:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP588
    Slot-loading 8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Writes DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL discs at up to 4x speed
Writes DVD-R and DVD+R discs at up to 8x speed
Writes DVD-RW discs at up to 6x speed and DVD+RW discs at up to 8x speed
Reads DVDs at up to 8x speed
Writes CD-R discs at up to 24x speed
Writes CD-RW discs at up to 16x speed
Reads CDs at up to 24x speed
If any are near the top end, that could explain it.
Some copy-protected commercial DVDs that were recently released may have difficulty with Apple's drives.
Some non-region discs may have difficulty if you are outside of the country region the disc was made.  Apple gives you several attempts to setup regions.
If you or anyone else stuck an SD card in the CD drive by accident, it would spit out discs regardless of what kind you put in.  Good to try a commercial music CD you know worked before, or a commercial DVD you know worked before under 10.6.8.
I know for instance some Netflix DVDs won't read on my 10.9 installed iMac of the same age but will work on the 10.7 installed MacBook Pro that is newer.   And switching back to 10.6 on the same iMac doesn't make a difference.
http://www.macsales.com/ offers external drives as well as internal replacement drives worldwide.
    Bluray is not compatible.
Discs with sticky label may not work because they make the disc out of balance, and the sticky can get into the drive mechanism.
Barring anything else, it could have gotten dust accumulated.  Bring it to the genius bar of an Apple Store if still baffled.

  • Upgraded itunes now my dvd drive has stopped working

I recently updated itunes and now my dvd driver has stopped working. My computer won't even recognize my dvd drive. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and uninstalled itunes several times. I've tried system restore. I've even looked for an older version of itunes and no luck. I took it into Fry's electronics and they fixed it but when I hooked up my ipod it stopped working again. I don't know what to do. This is really frustrating and I am just tired of itunes messing with stuff and constatly crating new versions. I've read other threads and have tried some of the suggestions with the registration which didn't work.
    Can you please help me.

You might get more help if you post your question in the correct forum.

  • CD/DVD drive has stopped being recognised by Satellite A100-01G

I have a Satellite A100-01G but the CD/DVD drive has stopped being recognised by the machine.
I have Vista ultimate as the O/S.
    Please help
    Thank you

    Hi
Did you check in the device manager if the CD/DVD drive appears correctly?
    Please check this!!!
As further action I would recommend removing the CD/DVD drive from the device manger a reboot the notebook.
The Windows OS should recognize the new device (ODD) and should load the drivers again.
Then access the registry and remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    and reboot.
    Good luck

  • Cd/dvd drive has disappeared

my cd/dvd drive is not detected by windows, but is detected by the device manager
the BIOS detects is as well. I've tried removing the upper & lower filters, uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, and have also checked to see if I can assign the drive a letter. the drive isn't even there
i have had this problem for a while. first i had fixed it, but then after doing a system recovery, it has disappeard once again. I've tried all of the microsoft fix its, and it all does not work.
However, it did work before I did the system recovery, so I do not believe it is a hardware issue. The cd drive also has a blinking light and spins, but windows does nothing.
    please help!!!

  • My DVD drive has stopped reading DVD's. Help?

I have owned my Pavilion S5165-uk for merely a few months now, and now my DVD Drive is refusing to read any DVD's. CD's are fine, but when you're a student such as myself, there's no better way of spending time that you're meant to be spending doing private study other than playing The Sims 3. I have tried multiple DVD's yet my drive is refusing to pick up anything other than CD's. I have tried every solution the HP troubleshooter has to offer and am beginning to feel a little stumped. Any Ideas?

Hello George_Clark, Many times when this occurs, the DVD laser has become faulty. These multi-purpose drives have a CD and a DVD laser. This might explain why the CD still works.
If this is the case, the only option would be to replace the CD\DVD drive.
I have been successful in cleaning the laser in a few DVD drives and managed to get them working again, but that is quite involved and not easily done, and after the hard work, may not be successful.
DVD drives can be purchased at inexpensive cost now, so if I suspected the drive to be faulty, I would just purchase a new one.

  • DVD drive has completely disappeared.

My DVD drive seems to have completely disappeared The last thing I did before shutting down was watch a DVD.
The next time I booted up the DVD was gone from my desktop, when selecting the DVD player it says "A valid DVD drive could not be found [-70012], iPhoto says there is no burning device, System Profiler says "No burning device was found. If you are using an external device please make sure that it is connected and powered properly." Hitting the eject button on either the keyboard or in iTunes does nothing...I don't even get the eject icon that flashes in the middle of the screen. There has been no change or update to my OS. I'm clueless people. Can someone please help? Thanks for your time...

This has just happened to me. I was playing, ripping, burning DVDs without a problem and then, over the weekend, the SuperDrive just quit operating accompanied by the same messages the original poster detailed. I find it hard to accept the Superdrive just "died" but I've done everything, I mean EVERYTHING, and I can't get it start responding again. At a certain point, I guess there is nothing else to do other than replace the drive but I can't help but feeling there has to be some way to bring this drive back to life. It wasn't giving out any sign that there was a physical problem and there was no period of time of spotty operation. I keep thinking if I could find some info about flashing the Superdrive's firmware or replacing the drive's driver/kext files, one of these would end up "fixing" the drive but it seems like once the drive goes "bad" everyone ends up replacing the drive rather than trying to track down any fix. A replacement drive is cheap enough and the capabilities of the newer Superdrives are superior so maybe I need to get over it and just realize replacing the drive is actually the more efficient and effective course of action but I still wonder if there isn't a system/system software problem that will end up re-emerging with a new drive.

  • Cd/dvd drive tenacious problem!

    Hi! I'm stuck.
HP Pavilion dv6624ca laptop, with cd/dvd/lightscribe drive from TSST. Some months ago it stopped recognizing any media. It just clicks and gronks and never gets up to speed, eventually just stops with nothing recognized, pretending it's empty.
    I've tried it all:
Windows Update (I have Vista Service Pack 2)
    uninstalled cd driver and reinstalled
deleted upper and lower filters in registry
checked Device Manager, everything seems to be working fine.
    Except it isn't.
After all that, it recognizes music cd's but no others, data or dvd. In Safe Mode command prompt it doesn't recognize them, either.
Sounds like a hardware thing, right? Here's the catch - my wife has the same computer, which developed exactly the same problem at roughly the same time. Like some update somewhere down the road did it. And when I connect an external cd/dvd drive, it acts the same way.
    Help!

    Hi,
It would help if you identified your notebook with its complete product name or  product number.
HP has produced and brought to market perhaps more than 10,000 models of notebooks and desktop PCs over the years. It is difficult to help you if we don't know which one you own and which operating system is installed.
Method #1: If the notebook will boot into Windows you can retrieve your Product Number by pressing Fn + Esc key. You can also read the Service Tag (if present) attached to the bottom of your notebook\netbook.
    Method #2:
Remove the battery and look in the compartment where the battery was installed. You should see a printed part number and a product name. Please post one or both of them (with all alphanumeric characters here). If you live outside of North America, it helps us if you post the country of purchase.
    Desktop PC
Look at the rear or side of your desktop for a service tag for the complete product name and product number.
    Best regards,
    erico

  • DVD Drive has disappeared

Why has my DVD drive disappeared from the list of available drives in Photoshop Elements? How do I get PE to pick it up again?

Please try doing the same after restarting the system. If it still doesn't recognize it, check Folder Tree in left panel of the Organizer. The tree I'm referring to is the complete folder structure which becomes visible on clicking the small icon next to My Folders.

  • Equium - DVD drive has vanished

Installed some new software the other day to 'catch' a video from my vcr- filled up my Vista drive so I uninstalled it after putting the video on my harddrive. Now my DVD drive doesn't show up on my computer.
Tried microsoft's automated trouble shooter - it installs the driver for the device and the ram but it disapears again everytime I switch off my pc - and the dvd player still doesn't work. I don't know what I'm doing here so if anyone has some simple information how to fix this I would be very grateful.
    Thanks

    Hi writerchic,
I dont know which Microsoft trouble shooter you have tried or what it does it exactly but in your case I would remove the upper- and lowerfilteres in registry. Therefore follow these steps:
    1) Run regedit (Start -> Run -> regedit)
    2) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    3) In the right pane, delete the "UpperFilters" key, and delete the "LowerFilters" key.
    4) Reboot your notebook.
    Does it work?

Sorry but after reading this one sentence problem description I can just say bring it to the service.
