My DVD drive is faulty, HELP!

My Mac is nearly 2 years old now and just recently when I try to eject an audio CD from the DVD drive it won't let me. It just keeps saying 'this audio cd is in use with another application please try quiting the application and try again' even when all my applications are closed. I have to shut my Mac down and start it up again just to eject the CD. (This can't be good). Plus the DVD drive also at random does not play some DVD's and just makes a klunking noise, even if is a brand new, original DVD. What is happening here and how can I solve this problem?
PLEASE HELP!
I love my Mac and can't bare the thought of it breaking down on me.

Have you tried holding the eject key down for longer? the upgrade to 10.4.9 includes this annoying 'improvement' that reduces the chance of accidentally ejecting disc. Also try fixing permissions using DISC UTILITY and restarting.
good luck.

You cannot install OS X without using an installer DVD, and that requires a DVD drive (internal or external.) Alternatively, if you have access to another Mac and if both have Firewire ports, then you can use Target Disk Mode: Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.
Your profile indicates you have a MacBook, but are using OS X 10.3.x which is not possible. The first MacBook model used a special Intel-only version of Tiger, 10.4.x.

  • ITunes Has Disabled My CD/DVD Drive - can anyone help ?

    Hi,
I recently bought a 5th Generation iPod Video 30gb, and have some issues with the iTunes software.
I am running a fairly new (4/5 months old) Packard Bell PC with Windows XP Home and have Sonic RecordNow CD burning software.
    Here's the problem....
When I tried to load the iTunes software from the CD that came in the box, it allowed me to install it, but then when I double-clicked the icon to launch it, I just got a Windows error message (the type that says windows has encountered an error and needs to close - would you like to send a report to Microsoft Yes/No). iTunes would not load at all.
Also, my CD/DVD drive then disappeared from the system. When I ran a check through System Tools, it said that the drivers had loaded properly, but that a CD/DVD device could not be found.
So, I did a System Restore to a few days before and the drive re-appeared and worked fine.
Next step, I downloaded iTunes from the Apple website. This time everything worked fine. I spent the entire day (much to the annoyance of my wife) transferring CDs to iTunes - no problems - iPod synchronised fine etc.
Then, a day later, I decided to carry on transferring my CD collection, but the CD drive has disappeared again - system tools says that the drivers have loaded correctly, but that a CD device cannot be found (Error 41).
Any ideas - I'd like not to have to do another restore, as I presume I'll lose all the CD data that I've transferred so far. Some other websites have suggested I edit the BIOS to point the system towards the CD drive. Slightly nervous about doing this (if indeed it's the right thing to do anyway) and wouldn't really know how.
Also, I did think about un-installing Sonic RecordNow and re-installing iTunes, but then I look in add/remove programs, it's not there.
I'm at a loss - any help would be greatly appreciated.
I await a response with eager anticipation.
    Thanks,
    Jon (United Kingdom).

  • Hp DVD Drive Locker! Help Please

    hi guys:
will I tried to clean up my notebooks dvd drive. i made a mistake while closing it, idk where, and the issue is it doesn't close (lock) when i close it, help please, and thanks
here is a video i made for a better understanding
    http://youtu.be/j0hMz_SWq8c

Ok, I didn't realise that you never found the DVDPlayback.framework folder, the way you answered my post, I just predumed that you had.
The Mavericks version may or may not be differenect to the Lion version you have. I don't know. However, there is more to the folder than just this one file. How they all work and what outside looks into this folder, again I don't know, but I would expect these to be contributing to your issues.
I don't know why you bothered to download a separate player, especially a blue-ray, but you may as well delete it as it is now help to you.
The initialization error, is the same one I would normally see when the DVDPlayback file was still set to internal. I suspect that you are getting the error, because of other issues with the framework.
No, I will not email my framework files to you, as again I have no idea if they would even be any use to you, plus, I just don't want to.
You have to have the correct DVDPlayback.framework on you computer. I stongly suggest that you go to the Mac App Store, to your Purchases tab and download the full installer of OS X Mavericks. This is a large 5GB file and will fully reinstall the operating system onto you computer. It SHOULD leave all your data intact, but backup first, to be sure. If this framework is missing, you may have others too.
Once you downloaded the OS X installer and installed, make the changes to the DVDPlayback files as before, make sure System Preferences > CDs & DVDs is set to 'When you insert a video DVD: Open DVD Player' is set, and you should be right to watch DVD movies.

  • Quicksilver Powermac G4 DVD drive question, please help!!

Hi Guys I really hope someone can help me.
I have got a Quicksilver powermac G4 (2001) it has only an internal CD drive. I have purchased the lastest tiger series a s cds to be up to date. However, I've the got the computer mainly for recording music. I have Cubase system which requires a dvd drive. Can anyone recommend a external dvd drive I can use that is good enough for my mac and recording. I am frightened to buy an internal drive as I've no idea how to install one.
    Will be so grateful guys,

    Hi
The Pioneer DVR-110D (or newer DVR-111D) is a popular choice, works with Tiger and burns both CDs and DVDs. Here in the UK they cost around £30 and in the States around $40 I think.
The following tips may also help with installation, although most are fairly obvious:
    1. Try and use the right sized screwdriver, one that fits snugly into the screws, so you don't risk chewing up the screw heads.
    2. When you're removing the old drive from the computer, get someone to hold it as you undo the screws and disconnect the cables, so you don't risk it dropping onto the logic board.
    3. The power cable can be a tight fit, so you may need to pry it off the old drive with your finger nails or gently rock it from side to side. Don't pull directly on the cables though.
    4. The power cable and ribbon cable connectors are keyed (or shaped) so they'll only fit one way. If you're having trouble connecting them to the new drive, make sure they're the right way up.
You'll also just need to check the new drive is configured correctly. On the back there should be two rows of pins with a small jumper block. By moving the jumper block between different pairs of pins, you can configure the drive as master, slave or CS (cable select). It needs to be set to master. The drive should come with instructions or have a sticker on it indicating which pair of pins is master.
    I hope this helps.

  • CD/Dvd drive not working - help please

    Hello,
Whenever I put a disc into my cd/dvd drive it ejects immediately and when I look at the system profiler it does not show the drive as even existing. The problem originated when I did a software update 2 months ago and the computer crashed everytime I put a disc in.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated,
    Denver

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Often, when a software update doesn't completely install, odd things can happen. If the software update was for 10.5.5, go to http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/ and download the combo 10.5.5 release. Before installing it, bring up disk utility (in applications/utilities) and repair permissions, install it, then repair permissions again.

  • CD/DVD drive not working --- HELP

i'm wondering if this is something i can fix myself or that i'll have to bring in....
for no apparent reason, ie no trauma or anything, my CD drive is not working. when i put in a CD (haven't used a DVD in it yet) the computer doesn't read it. it makes a odd noise and then nothing.....i push eject and the computer kinda freezes and i can only get the CD out if i Force Quit iTunes and restart my iBook. any thoughts, greatly appreciated.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Are your System Preferences set to do what you are expecting when you put a CD into the drive tray?
    From Mac Help:
You can determine how you want your computer to respond when you insert a music or picture CD in the optical drive. You can:
Open iTunes or iPhoto to play or view your CD
Open another application of your choice
Run a script to perform a sequence of actions
Ignore the disc if you don't want to do anything right away
Open System Preferences and click CDs & DVDs.
Choose an action from the two pop-up menus for music CDs and picture CDs.
Close the window to save your settings.
To play a music CD automatically when you insert it, you also need to set iTunes to begin playing when you insert a CD. In the General pane of iTunes Preferences, choose Begin Playing from the On CD Insert pop-up menu.
If your System Preferences are set correctly, you can try to do a little hard drive maintenance to see if that will help. This may or may not help (depending upon what the problem is), but it won't hurt to try. Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up, try to restart normally, and go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and repair permissions on the hard drive.
See if a little hard drive maintenance helps things out.
Also, how big is your hard drive and how much space remains available on it? Strange things start to happen when you have less than 5 GB of available hard drive space.

  • Can't find a cd or dvd drive?! help please!

I recently went to update my itunes and after i did i keep getting this error
"The registry settings used by iTunes drivers for importing music and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as the result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall Itunes.
my only issue is that I don't want lose my entire itunes library..if someone can please help me with this issue i would greatly appreciate it

You won't lose any music by uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes. Try and use Microsoft's Cleanup Utility and then reinstall Quicktime/iTunes:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
Make sure it's a new and fresh download from:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
If that doesn't help, you could try updating your cd burner's drivers:

  • DV5 1223TX DVD DRIVE FAULTY

I've had my DV5 for about 8 months and its never correctly read dvd's or any cd. Once in perhaps 20 attemps does it find a dvd and actually play it. I was on Vista and upgraded to 7 recently which made no difference the drivers are apparently up to date. Its so frustrating its the lightscribe dvd drive.
Any help would be fantastic, both vista and 7 report the drive to be working correctly, It just makes endless noise and locks up any dvd play back software.

This is a warranty issue. It sounds like the drive needs to be replaced and at 8 months it should still be covered.

  • Is it possible to install a HD-DVD drive on a Satellite P20

    Hi Everyone
Is it possible to install a HD-DVD drive on my P20?
My screen has died, so I'm going to use this machine as a dedicated Media Centre attached to my TV.
If I can install a HD-DVD drive it would help a lot.
    Regards
    Richard

Well, I dont believe that you will be able to use a new HD drive or blue ray drive on this notebook but who knows everything depends on the master / slave and c-sel settings.
Its possible to change such settings on external desktop drives by switching the jumper but something like that is not possible on slim line internal drivesusually the firmware controls this settings on notebooks drives.
It seems nobody tried upgrade the P20 with such drive that because this is a new technology and at this time you will not find many internal HD or Blue Ray drives on the market.
However, please come back and report if you have more info about the upgrade.

  • HT1444 Upgrading from 10.5.8 to 10.6+ without an operating CD/DVD Drive?

Hi there, I own an iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz 4GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, Early 2009 model, on OS X 10.5.8 and I definitely need to upgrade it to at least 10.6, since many things such as Flash Player, YouTube and several Apps are not running on my system. My CD/DVD drive has stuck a long time ago. It is neither a software issue, nor I am sure whether it is a hardware issue exactly as the CD has stuck in and it wont eject because the case has been harmed outside and it will not let the machine pop it out as it does not go out through the "hole", it bumps on the metal. I guess this requires a more specific repair which I cannot afford at the moment for such an old machine. Is it possible to upgrade using an other way? I do have the Snow Leopard setup disc but I cannot insert it! Maybe via an external CD/DVD drive? Please help! It will be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Use an external drive which is capable of starting up your Mac model.

  • How do I reinstall jaguar if my dvd drive doesn't work?

My powerbook g4 will not go past the grey startup screen. I have tried everything to repair it, except for a reinstall due to the fact that my dvd drive is broken. I have run data rescue II from my girlfriends macbook pro and was able to recover the data that I hadn't backed up. I then ran diskwarrior from an iBook G4 (diskwarrior won't work on the macbooks) but diskwarrior could not find any data. The only thing left I can think of to do is do a clean reinstall 10.2. Is it possible to do that if the install cd is running from another computer? If yes, can it be done from a macbook pro? I don't have access to an external dvd drive. Any help would be much appreciated!!!
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

"Is it possible to do that if the install cd is running from another computer?"
    Yes: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
"If yes, can it be done from a macbook pro?"
No, as the MBP is an intel based Mac and will not run the 10.2 CD. Use the iBook.

  • Ibook g3 M2453 boot from external DVD drive

    Hi, I'm Simon from Germany.
I have an iBook M2453 Mac OS X and a lot of dvds.
But the iBook has no DVD drive. So I bought an external DVD drive. But no matter what I do during boot (press the C key or alt)
I can not boot from external DVD drive.
    Please help me
    Thank you.
    Simon.
PS: I have translated the text using Google translate

    Hi Simon,
the iBook is able to boot from USB, but this is not expected behaviour and not supported by Apple.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA20554
There are some external enclosures that do the trick.
But only when you press ALT after Power on. (Select a startup volume via the Startup Manager)
External enclosures with Prolific PL-3507 chipset (Firewire/USB Combo)
You will find them on Ebay Germany
    I have a Delock IDE>USB 2.0 enclosure for 2,5" HDs
    http://www.delock.com/produkte/gruppen/Geh%C3%A4use/Delock_25_external_enclosure _USB20_42365.html?setLanguage=EN
    that works also.
    Hallo Simon,
