My DVD writer's drive on my Pavillion DV6000 stopped functioning. It's listed on My computer. Help?

The dvd writer is listed in My Computer (Vista Home premium) but it does not work. Pushing the eject button only flashes but nothing happens. The eject function from anywhere in vista does not work. I get an I/O error. Any ideas?

I wouldn't waste the speed of firewire on only a DVD/CD Reader (ie a DVD/CD ROM) - if that's what you're talking about. I would say that it would be the Recorder/Burner and recording software that would benefit the most from the speed increase, since it's doing the hardest work.
Unless it was that you wanted to put the DVD/CD ROM (the reader) inside the Mac and you wanted to use the other burner elsewhere (then putting the Pioneer in the now vacant FW case). If not, then you already have two good drives, why waste money on duplicating what you already have. All an external Firewire anything is is an external firewire case with a drive of some sort inside it (whether hard drive or dvd/cd, etc), and I've often found that the quality of the internal drives of many external cases leave a lot to be desired. And you often pay more for a completed setup like that. I prefer to put together my own - I usually save money and as noted before, get much better quality overall. So just get yourself a good Firewire 5.25" case (the LaCie ones for example are beautiful and fast - but there are others). Just make sure that it can handle the DVD aspect though, some of the older FW cases can't. I'd recommend looking thru these discussions for other posts on this topic (chipset speeds too) - there has already been a lot of good input on this subject.
But whatever you decide, I'd definitely recommend having the burner in the firewire case.

HP DVD Writer 740b not recognizing DVDs

My 740b will not recognize DVDs. I have no problems with CDs but any DVD I put in the tray isn't recognized. I initially thought the problem was with the DVD+R I was using but I also have a Slimline s3132w with a DVD writer installed and it burned and read the same discs with no problems. I tried several commercal DVDs (movies) and when I try to play them I get a no disc in drive error. I also have a Lite-On DVD SOHD-16P9S DVD ROM on the same system and have no problems what so ever playing the same discs. I have tried replacing the ATA data cables post attempting the trouble shooting tips given on the support web page. I have upgraded the firmware hoping this might alleviate the problem with no success. As I stated before this problem is only with DVDs, the drive has no problems what so ever with CDs. I have a feeling the problem my be with my updating to Windows XP SP3. I had done so before but removed it because my Linksys Wireless Adapter(PCI) wouldn't function with it installed. That problem has been repaired and now this. The system the drive is installed in is as follows:

            video: ATI 9550 w/256mb video memory
               audio: Sound Blaster Audigy Z2S Platinum
         boot drive: Seagate ST340014A 40GB

OK chalk me up too to the list of users whose HP DVD Writer 740b cannot "see" blank DVD's and CD's.
Full marks to HP in that I am still smoothly running a Pavilion Media Centre PC EG211AA-ABG m7288a. I find the older plug compatablity useful and have beefed up RAM making it still a powerful "retro" media machine after all these years.....
However after a power failure caused a disk error that trashed my Windows XP and while it restored (as in full reset) like a trooper I took the opportunity to do a clean upgrade to Windows 7 (64bit) seeing as XP is no longer supported. And yes my HP DVD Writer 740b cannot detect blank DVD's and CD's although it can read those with content. It seems to be acting more like a CD ROM drive than a Read Write drive.
I have tried ALL the suggested fixes to no avail and yes my "shell detection" service is operational and on automatic.
But here's the rub as it were. My HP Support Assistant assures me that I have a HP DVD Writer 740b installed and running ED24 firmware. So I was hopeful when I found that there was an HP upgrade from the ED24 firmware (sp26595.exe - DVD-RW 16X HP DVD Writer 740b Drive Firmware Update ). HOWEVER even if I run it in XP compatable mode it returns the message that I do NOT have a HP DVD Writer 740b installed and therefore no upgrade is required.
The label on the front of the drive is "LightScribe DVD +/- Writer / CD-Writer".
Is the HP Assistant wrong in identifying it as an HP DVD Writer 740b? Also could the drive be getting confused thinking a blank disc is a lightscribe disc in upsidedown ready for printing? I have to try and find a way to reload the LabelPrint software (have the LSS) that was lost when I upgraded to Windows 7. Probably can't retrieve it from the old XP recovery disk.
Any NEW thoughts (especially as to why firmware upgrade does not see the drive) most wrlcome as apart from this one little thing the Pavilion is performing like a trooper and is an excellent advertisement for the durability of HP products (which is why we brought 3 HP laptops as well.

IBook not recognising DVD writer?

I have a 1 year old LaCie 8x Firewire DVD writer but my iBook seems to have stopped recognising it when I plug it in. I have not used it for a few months but it seems to be working fine (blue light comes on).
Does anyone know what might have gone wrong or how I can diagnose it?

Hmm... It shouldn't show in the Finder. Only a FireWire hard drive with folders and files in it would show in the Finder.
Does Toast see it? The make & model should be listed at the bottom right side of the Toast window...

DVD writer not burning files

the light on the dvd writer that comes on when the driver is in use is constantly on once the pc switched on
and my dvd writer onlyh burns up to 3% and stops,
Please what can the problem be and what do you recommend I do.

Maybe its a media malfunction?
There are many different kinds of dvd and cd medias on market and from my own personal experience I know that sometimes some dvd, cd doesnt work properly.
Did you test different types of dvd?

Windows error msg: "Can not write to drive G: Joe's iPod"

Halfway thru the download process (1780 songs) from itunes to my ipod I get a windows error msg:
"Can not write to file G: Joe's ipod. All the data has been lost. Check for an error on your computer or network."
Getting the error msg: " Can not write to drive G: Joe's ipod. All data has been lost, your computer or network may have failed."
"Windows/ My computer" shows my ipod as drive G: and itunes starts up properly when I plug my ipod into my firewire port. About halfway thru the download (1780 songs) the transfer from itunes to my ipod stops and I get the above error message. (Never worked with USB). I am not on a network.
According to tech supt, I have:
-Installed Service Pack 2,
-Restored ipod to factory settings
-Installed update 5.0.1. Everything worked fine last Feb with the version 4 of itunes when I first loaded everything up.
Have tried to reinstall version 4, but no luck.
My ipod charges fine thru the firewire cable.
Any ideas?? Thanx anyone.

If your computer has a tray-loading drive, eject it normally.
If it has a slot-loading drive, tilt the computer so that the drive faces downward, or try using a business card to grab hold of it.

I have a mac book air, and i bought a LG portable cd drive, which is suppose to burn cds. but they software cd that was included with the lg cd/dvd writer doesnt load. and i want to burn a cd from itunes but it says " burning software is not found"??

You dont need ANY CD/DVD burning software on your Mac

Although I've had the iMac for 5 years this may be the first time I've tried copying a video recording onto the DVD drive (I've made lots of CD copies without a problem). The folder and files all seem to be reproduced in identical order on the disc but my domestic DVD player cannot make sense of the recording, unlike the original source DVD from which the files originated. The drive has always been noisy but I've never assumed it shouldn't be! Does this fit your PRAM battery theory? If so, please explain more. Thanks.

I have an external firewire burner; it never shows on the desktop unless I insert a CD or DVD - that icon will then show (if I have my preferences set to show those on the desktop). Hae you checked in Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities) to see if it is listed under drives?

I bought a LG slim portable dvd writer. I have gotten it connected, and it seems to have downloaded the drivers but then it turns off and I cannot even get the driver CD to eject because it turns off completely.

I bought an LG Slim Portable DVD writer. I connected it to my MacBook Air and the drivers seemed to download. There is an icon that says SuperMulti on my desktop. The portable drive comes on when I double click on the icon, and I hear the drive running. It turns off about 5 seconds later and I cannot even get the driver disc out because the drive is off (no green light).
I am not savvy. What do I do? It says it is compatible with Mac, but then in another place in the directions it states Windows is needed. Please help an old feeble woman!

You need to contact the DVD writer manufacture/vendor customer support and/or read its user manual. LG is not an Apple product.

May I ask you why you need this?
To be honest such driver doesnt exists.
I mean the CD/DVD driver is a part of the Windows Operating System (XP, Vista, etc..) and you dont need to install it.
You internal CD/DVD drive should be recognized automatically after XP installation.

Yes the Mac can read that drive but you would need to Copy the data off of it to the Mac as apposed to Move, which implies Deleting them from the drive as they were transferred from the external to the Mac. Since the Mac can Not Write to NTFS drives it can't Delete anything as that is really a Write operation, IE Making changes to the NTFS formatted drive.
Once you have that Data on Both your New Mac and you Older Windows PC you can format that drive to work on both system.
If you want to and plan on doing that post back and I'll explane how, it is simple but should be done on a Windows PC.
If you only plan on using it on the Mac from now on that is fairly simple also and is done on the Mac, Once you have the files from it stored on the Mac.
Yes you could burn those photos to DVD but that is just a waste of DVDs, you don't need to.

Just installed Windows XP on a siblings older HP Pavilion & everything seems to be working well except that I am unable to copy files to CD. Am able to read CD (loaded the OS from one & also able to play DVD's).
Receiving error msgs during Windows copy: there was an error in the writing process. The disc you have attempted to write may no longer be usable.
Microsoft Fixit says: The selected drive is not capable of writing, if you have several CD/DVD drivers try using another one, otherwise you may need to install a CD/DVD writer.
I downloaded the HP Diagnostics Utility & everything checked out good - no errors. But then it only checked the CD/DVD drive for READ function (not write). Think I have all good free codecs installed - not willing to pay for nVidia codecs on a laptop this old. This PC bounced around my sisters family for a while & so the original discs are lost. I used a Windows reinstallation disc & the COA label to reinstall the OS.
Could something simply be physically wrong with the drive & it is incapable of writing. Would removing & reinstalling the drive help? Cleaning it?
