My e-reader isn't recognized after upgrading to Mavericks

I have a Wexler Flex One e-reader -- very basic, but lightweight and very durable (I've broken 3 Kindle screens).  To copy books to it, you connect it to USB where it is mounted as a storage device and then you copy your epubs/pdfs/what have you over to it.  It worked great when I was using 10.8.  Since I've upgraded to Mavericks, I cannot get the Mac to recognize the device -- it doesn't show up in the System report at all.
My mac info:
My System Report (USB section):
I have a friend with an older Macbook that is still on 10.7.  I can mount the device fine on it.
My friend's Mac info:
My friend's System Report:
I have tried reseting the NVRAM/PRAM and resetting the SMC on my Macbook with no luck.  Any ideas?
Thanks.

Well, the manufacturer doesn't supply drivers for the device.  It should just mount in the same way that an arbitrary flash drive is mounted by default kernel drivers.  I did contact them, and there reply was:
"Hello
You just need to connect the book to your PC. Then in the book confirm connection to the PC. In the system should have a disk called Flex One."
But, I rebuilt the PRAM again, and now it recignizes it.  I guess if it doesn't at some point in the future, I just need to rebuild until it works...

Disable Photo Stream in the System/iCloud preference pane
and in iPhoto's Photo Share preference pane.
Reboot and reenable both respectively. That should jump start Photo Stream.

If the "it" refers to a compressed (zipped) spreadsheet that you downloaded, the ".ods" extension is used by LibreOffice and probably OpenOffice (which are free versions of MS Office) for spreadsheets, which would suggest that wherever you're getting that "Excel" file from has switched to one of those programs. I've tried opening an .ods file from LibreOffice using MS Office 2013 for Windows and it does open though with a warning that some things have been changed. I don't know if Office for Mac can normally open .ods files. But if your need is to just open .ods files, take a look at LibreOffice.

  • How can I restore my card reader after upgrading to Mavericks?

I have a MacBookPro that is not identifying the SD card reader since installing Mavericks. I have heard that ScanDisk has a patch but I have not been able to download it from their site. I have read that downloading the SandDisk patch on a PC and then transferring it to a Mac will fix the problem. I would sure appreciate some help restoring my Mac after uploading to Mavericks. My firewire drive does not seem to be working either. I cannot use my M-Audio firewire interface for recording and editing in ProTools. This represents a lot of down time and/or a pretty big loss of money for me. Can anybody tell me whether Apple provides support for these types of problems or is it completely up to the user to solve them? I am a relatively new Apple user. I bought the MacBook Pro shortly after they were released, about 2 1/2 years ago. Up to that time I was strictly a Windows user. I am surprised Apple did not seem to go to much, if any trouble to warn me of the difficulty I would have after upgrading to Mavericks. Apple, where are you?

Launch the Image Capture app in your Applications folder.
    Conenct the card reader.
Then see if Image Capture recognizes the card unde DEVICES top left side of the Image Capture window.
BEFORE upgrading from one OS X to the next, check the websites for your third party software and hardware for compatibility.
Apple is not responsible for third party software and hardware used with your Mac.

  • Why does the migration wizard run every time I start up my mac after upgrading to mavericks ?

After upgrading to Mavericks, I log in as normal but then a migration wizard starts up asking me where I want to import data from and create new accounts. Why and how do I stop it ?

It could be part of OS X's Resume feature. Any app that is open at shutdown will re-open on boot unless the tick in the following image is deselected when shutting down/restarting:
Also check that Migration Assistant isn't listed in System Preferences>Users & Groups>Login Items.

  • Mac Mini lagging after upgrading to Mavericks

Upgraded Mac mini to Mavericks.  System before was running great with no lag time and fast with the internet along with different applications, email, uploading photos, no problem.  After upgrading to Mavericks noticed lag times in logging into different applications, browsers, email and definitely uploading photos.  Did a speed check on four different sites and all were over the 15mps up and 1 down with my internet provider.  Before I had 4 up and 1 down with my internet provider before provider upgraded everyone to the 15 up and 1 down, it was fast so no problems before.  Any suggestions before I drive to Des Moines for a Genius bar appointment?  Thanks much appreciated.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1

    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post any other kind of report — it will be very long and not helpful.

  • Internet browsing ludicrously slow after upgrading to Mavericks

    Hi All,
I wonder if someone could possibly offer some suggestions please.
Everything was fine and running sweetly on ML.
After upgrading to Mavericks, Internet browsing has become ridiculously slow.
Safari, Chrome and Firefox all exhibit the same problems.
Spotlight isn't indexing, and nothing else is 'hogging' any resources.
There are no issues with my routher or modem ad my WindozePC works just fine.
I have seen posts by people recommending clearing the Cache and Preferences files.
Within these folders though, are settings I don't want to lose. (reg info for software etc.)
Due to geographical restrictions, a trip to the Genuis Bar isn't an option.
Could someone please offer some advice?
    Many thanks in advance.

Hold down the Option key while emptying the Trash.
As for your Mac running slower... make sure there's enough free disk space.
Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.

  • Cant open doc files from the server on MacBook Air after upgrading to Maverick

Cant open doc files from the server on MacBook Air after upgrading to Maverick, I can only open up docx file. Thank you!

Thanks for the suggestion! I don't use Phantasm or VectorScribe (or any Astute Graphics plugins for that matter). I do, however, have a Wacom tablet and have a few plugins that concern using Blurb Book Creator as well as LiveSurface Context.
I did the very unfortunate and foolish act of upgrading to Maverick without a backup, so postponing isn't an option for me.
I geuss my question at this point would be, would it be worthwhile to wipe all the adobe products from my harddrive and re-install them? Or would that be a useless endeavor.
I don't have an external hard-drive so backing up and re-installing the entire OS would be a bit much. Any suggestions?

  • Macbook 2012 Mid: Can't mount USB mass storage after upgrading to Mavericks

    Hi guys,
I'm having big problems with USB mass storages. After upgrading to Mavericks my Mac doesn't see some USB storage devices (mostly USB sticks and Android phone's memory cards via USB. My external USB 3.0 hard disks work fine) at all even though the devices themselves (for example my Android phone) are clearly recognized according to the System Report. When I plug them in, they don't show up on my Finder or on Disk Utility.
I've searched everywhere and it seems like some other people are having the same problem, none seems to offer a definite solution. I've even formatted my HD and reinstalled Mavericks from the recovery partition. Now it mounts a USB stick that was in one of the USB ports at the time of installation but still doesn't read anything else! The funny thing is when I boot into Windows 8 on my Boot Camp partition, I can mount any USB devices including the USB stick and the Android phone I'm having problems on Mavericks without any problems. I can even see then when I boot into the recovery so there's clearly something wrong with Mavericks.
Any chance someone has figured out a solution for this? Apple should've address this long time ago.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem? Note: If the devices are not in Mac OS X format, they normally won't mount in safe mode, but they should appear in Disk Utility.
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • CUDA broken after upgrade to Mavericks

    MacBook Pro 7,1 (Mid 2010) 2.66GHz Core2Duo, 16GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 320M
    CUDA Driver 5.5.28
When I start After Effects, I get the following error: "Ray-tracing on the GPU requres an approved NVIDIA graphics card and CUDA 5.0 or later. For now, ray-tracing will use the CPU."
CUDA worked fine on this 'graphics card' in Mountain Lion, but after upgrading to Mavericks, it is no longer recognized. Anyone have any thoughts?

Yes - as of now nVidia is not supporting tesla based cards in Mavericks.  Make sure to write them and let them know you'd like your card to work in mavericks.

  • Messages crashes repeatedly after upgrade to Mavericks

After upgrading to Mavericks, Messages crashes repeatedly.
    Macbook Pro 17", circa 2011 I think, OS X 10.9.2.
Immediately after upgrading to Mavericks it would just crash when I scrolled down through my conversation history, but if I just searched for conversations it was generally functional.
Following some Apple Support Communities advice I renamed several directories, hoping that if I clear out the message history and start from "scratch" I would have better luck. I mv'd all the directories in:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.ichat/Data/Library/Messages
    ~/Library/Messages
After rebooting my laptop the conversation history cleared out like I had hoped, and as messages started coming in the chat.db, Archive, etc. folders were generated in the above directories like I expected. It was generally functional for a couple hours.
Now it crashes immediately on open. Here is first bit of the "Problem Details and System Configuration"
