My e4200 as a local dns server
Hi,
i'm trying to find out whether my e4200 has the possibility to be a local DNS server and if so, how I can configure it. As it is right out of the box, i cant ping any of my local machines on DNS.
Any ideas?
thanks!
If you are using windows pc's
this will for the most part take of the local name resolution issues
there are a few exceptions, which are mostly related to web browsers
in that IE, Firefox, and others all deal with name resolution a little differently
some need http://localclientname to work
while others will will work with just the localclientname
and the chaos of that is different amongst different versions of browsers
but as far as local name resolution goes, the following works well
On the router config page under the Setup tab for basic setup
Internet Setup has a setting for domain name
Domain Name: local
DHCP Server Setting has a setting for static dns servers
Static DNS 1: 192.100.1.1
doing the above will put all of the local dhcp clients in the .local dns zone
that the windows world can deal with for local name resolution
as far as other devices etc, its hit miss, but this does work me very well
I can even get name resolution to my network printer via web browser or via an os explorer ping etc.

Do I need to run local DNS server for NAT/DHCP to work?
Hello,
I'm coming across all kinds of explanations how to set up a server for public access, having a static IP and a pointed domain, but I have a dynamic public IP and don't need the server to be accessible through a domain name. I just want all the computers in my office to connect to the web over 1 cable connection. I've used Gateway Setup Assistant to set up NAT and DHCP and DNS and what not, but it didn't work out of the box. After some bootpd.plist fixes I now have DHCP working, it's handing out IP addresses, but all LAN connected machines cannot get onto the web, only the server can.
What am I doing wrong? Should I configure my DNS server differently? Or should it not be on at all, couldn't the local machines use my ISP's DNS servers?
Currently DNS is configured like this:
Settings are:
accept recursive queries from the following networks: localnets
forwarder IP addresses: (empty)
Zones are:
private. primary zone
134.23.24.in-addr.arpa. reverse zoneThough still a valid question for others I guess, I got my DNS working. The network preferences didn't have external DNS servers configured for the local network interface.

Hi,
I've got a customer who is interested in purchasing GSS's to provide local DNS services. They are a Windows/AD shop. Am I correct in thinking that the GSS can not be a replacement for there current local DNS, as the GSS (& Cisco Network Registrar) cannot support SRV records? Is there anyone that has ever used the GSS & CNR software as there local DNS in a mid-sized Windows/AD environment?
Just curious on others thoughts about this.
Thanks,
BradHi,
According to your description, my understanding is that the Name Server’s IP Address displayed as unknown in zone Properties.
All of your name servers a belong to lab.vnext, then, does this problem occurred in the zone lab.vnext?
Reference the environment you have described, I did a test lab and IP address of name server displayed as unknown. Until now, A work around way is to manually edit the unknown name server, and then click resolve to find the IP address of the corresponding
FQDN.

Eve Wang

Dear all,
with the help of this forum I was abel to set up the Domain, external-IP, DNS-A and PTR-Records at the domainname-server of my IPS.
Now I tried to setup the mac mini server as a DNS server. Here you can see my settings:

I set it up with the instructions read in this forum and a tutorial at lynda.com.
changeip works:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/427417/Screen%20shot%202010-02-09%20at%2009.43.53.jpg
I would be very glad if someone could take a look at the setup.
Do i have to make a A-Record for iCal and adressbook server? Also I only have one macmini-server?
Should the DNS server (192.168.1.133) be the first DNS entry in the Router(for the Clients to find the DNS-Server?) and the DNS-Servers of my IPS the DNS2??:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/427417/Screen%20shot%202010-02-09%20at%2011.03.56.jpg
Finally, If I install the server again I should enter here:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/427417/networkname.jpg
as "Primary DNS Name": internal.example.com or is it advanced.internal.example.com
Any suggestions are very much appreciated.

[Here are my DNS set-up notes|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1436]
I went spelunking in the iCal and Address Book stuff a while back and it didn't seem strictly necessary to have the iCal records. The iCal records are SRV records, and not A records. The AB server is probably going to use an existing A record for your server.
But I only need a record if the iCal or AB server is running on another mac. I only enable iCal and AB in ServerAdmin on my only macminiserver, this doesn't need ANY record, or am I wrong here?
Your DNS server(s) should be the only server registered with the router.
With your instructions on your homepage I understand this point now.
But other parts of the instructions are confusing for me. Mainly as you are using more "general terms" then the exact word written in ServerAdmin. e.g. you are using the terms: DNS nameserver server; nameserver; DNS-Server. And not "Primery zone name" or "Nameserver Hostname" like in ServerAdmin.
So I will try to translate your instructions for me:
_Add a forward primary zone for example.com. (note that trailing dot), and select the DNS nameserver server for that zone as 192.168.1.30 or whatever the IP address of your host (and now your DNS server). You'll want to enable the nameserver IP zone name and the DNS server IP address or host name (via the plus sign), the administrator email address, and will probably want to leave the zone transfer option disabled and the mailserver blank._
1. Add Primery Zone (Master):
_Primary Zone Name: mainoffice.com.
_Nameservers:
"Zone": mainoffice.com.
"Nameserver Hostname": advanced.mainoffice.com.
2. Add Machine Record (A)
_Machine Name advanced.mainoffice.com.
_IP-Adress 192.128.1.133
Next you write:
_Add an A record for IPv4 and an AAA record for IPv6 hostnames; here using the "hostname" selection._
I only need this if I run e.g. a Mail-Server or Workgroup Server on a another mac-server? I think in my case (iCal and AB) I dont need it.
_For testing use dig_
as I am unfamiliarly with this command, I used the application "Network Utility"/ Lookup
with positive results.
_After you have it all working, aim your clients at your new Snow Leopard Server DNS server box via explicit specification for via DHCP setting. Do not reference the ISP settings directly from your clients._
so on the clients under Systempreferences/Network/Ethernet/DNS there should be ONLY 192.168.1.133
The last thing I'm uncertain ist this:
_On your newly-configured DNS server, configure the NIC on the server to reference the host localhost (or the 127.0.0.1 address) as the DNS server; to loop or direct the local DNS host's own DNS queries back to the local DNS server box itself. This will cause the DNS server box use itself for DNS. Use the IP loopback address here, and not the host's own IP address._
so on the macmini server under Systempreferences/Network/Ethernet/DNS there should be ONLY 127.0.0.1 or advanced.mainoffice.com
... and NOT 192.168.1.133
Your instructions are a big help for me, also it may not look like this after all this questions. I would be very happy if you can answer me this open questions to me and the community.

Change of DNS server setting caused Exchange outages!
I am trying to google/bing my way through this, but here are the main points:
All remote Exchange servers had a) static IP addresses and b) were instructed to use DNS servers in Edmonton and Calgary
If WAN links dropped, they lost DNS
SOLUTION! Point remote servers to the domain controller in that location as the primary DNS server. WAN outage means Exchange still resolves names locally.
Well the day came and we add the local DNS server for each remote site as the primary DNS server at the top of "DNS server addresses, in order of use" portion of advanced TCP/IP settings dialogue box.
A reboot is performed
Voila! Exchange shits the bed! Hub transport servers in Edmonton and Calgary cannot resolve remote server names; as in no host(a) record exists for them anymore. And we have a 91 minute outage until the DNS is sorted out (ipconfig /registerdns run on each
server).
Has anyone encountered this or have some deep knowledge of DNS (relative to my own) that could at least throw out a theory as to why this might happen?Hi, please issue Get-ExchangeServer -Identity "ServerName" -status | fl and check:
CurrentDomainControllers
CurrentGlobalCatalogs
CurrentConfigDomainController
The server must been linked to the wrong server. You can change that in powershell too.

I have configured active directory on windows server 2012, as a example.in. I have another server configured for my website www.example.in. Now i have problem here that whenever i type this url it says that the webpage not found. after troubleshooting i
found that my DNS is resolving this id as a domain controller server, not to my web server
Can any one help me to add this entry in DNS server to reslove this.
Thanks in advanceYou can address this two ways.
1) in your dns zone on your local DNS server /domain controller add an "a record" for www or whatever is directing wrong and put in the ip address of the external web server, you can get this by going to a external site and ping the name or doing a dns look
up.
2) you may be able to use conditional forwarder create one with the full url of your website <a href="http://www..com">www.<site>.com and tell it which dns server you want to use to resolve in your case it would be the external dns host for your domain.
Option 1 is normally how we address, I threw in option 2 as an after thought. Option 1 is simpler too. -
How to dynamically find DNS server
Is there any way to dynamically find out the address of the local DNS server strictly using java?? i.e. with out looking in etc/resolv.conf or using Runtime.exec and running some machine dependent command??
Some quick thoughts (I have a meeting in five minutes):
Send out dhcp requests and see if you get the answer back. This requires that your applet can send broadcast ip packets, which is beyond what can be done with a normal unsigned applet, but maybe permission can be granted for signed applets. You will have to find a dhcp client library or implement a partiel one yourself.
Open /etc/resolf.conf or whatever the equivalent resource is on other operating systems, then use that name server.
Put a list of known good dns servers in a file on the webserver the applet is loaded from. Keep the list updated, as servers disappers. If you stick to DNS servers of more stable looking companies, and have say five on the list, then at least one is likely to be available at all times. -
I have a local LAN DNS server. My preferences point to that server. Why does dig give me 8.8.8.8 as my DNS server?
Something is/was modifying my DNS preferences to 8.8.8.8 It seems to be pointed correctly now (at my local LAN DNS server), but why was it pointed at 8.8.8.8 before? I never want it pointed to 8.8.8.8You've hit the nail on the head Ben. For point to point communications, the IP addresses should be fixed, therefore there is no need for DNS. If a DNS is configured, the NIC (Network Interface Card) drivers will try to contact it.
In my test system, I need DNS for the test computer, but I am communicating with a dedicated Spectrum Analyzer over TCP/IP. So I added a second NIC. The main NIC is configured for DNS and all that jazz. The second NIC (plugged into PCI slot) is configured with a hard coded address, no DNS, no Gateway, nothing else. I connect that NIC to the spectrum analyzer using a crossover cable. The analyzer is configured with a hard coded address also. Now my computer can get on our company network, and the spectrum analyzer is isolated from the network, so it can't catch any viruses, etc., and it still talks to the computer. When using a configuration such as this, it is best to use a dedicated address for the 2nd NIC and spectrum analyzer in the range of 192.168.100.0 to 254

When trying to create or update Azure RemoteApp collections that use a template image for some non-EN-US locales, it might fail with error "DNS server could not be reached". You might also see error code "DnsNotReachable".
Cause: There was a issue in Azure in which decimal punctuation was not treated properly if the locale of the template image used a comma (,) instead of a period (.).
Workaround: Before a fix was applied, the workaround was to use template images based on a locale that uses a period to delimit decimals, such as EN-US.
Resolution: As of March 19, 2015, a fix for this issue has been applied to Azure. You should once again be able to create collections from template images that use non-EN-US locales. If you continue to have this problem, please
try the workaround. If that works and the only difference in the template images is the locale, please email remoteappforum (at Microsoft). If the workaround does not work, the issue is likely caused by a DNS configuration issue such as:
No valid forwarders to public DNS servers configured on your internal DNS server(s).
A valid internal DNS server is not specified on your Azure RemoteApp VNet.
A VNet or internal network configuration issue is preventing the internal DNS servers from be reached by the VMs in the RemoteApp collection. -
How do I setup 'local' dns lookups for hostnames using DHCP server on WRT610N?
Said router with latest firmware has DHCP reservation setup with reserved clients names mapped to specific MAC addresses/IP addresses. I'd like my clients (a mixture of Mac and W7) to access mapped devices via hostnames and not IP addresses. I have static IP address provided by my ISP configured on the router with it's corresponding ISP DNS server addresses. FYI, the DHCP server DNS settings on the router are masked out (can't be changed) on the router and looks to be inherited from the Internet setup (in which I've entered the DNS IP addresses of my ISP's DNS).
On my clients, nslookup (or equivalent) clearly specify that the DHCP is pumping out the DNS servers from the ISP. Why would it not look for the reserved client hostnames first?
I know I can setup local /etc/hosts (or equivalents) or override the DNS and point to the router's IP address on the clients but I'd rather not - that's a lot of maintenance. I can also setup an internal DNS server, but again, overkill.
Is this feature available on this router or am I doing something wrong? An aging integrated Westell 327W DSL model/router used to be able to provide internal network DNS - but this more modern capable WRT610N router does not? Thoughts? Thanks.Well its not possible to access the storage driver using the host name.. You can access the storage driver using only the IP address. As the Linksys Router doesn't work on a Host Name.

I originally posted this question to the community section and was advised to post it here. Please bear with me as this will be a long post. I'm including the scenarios involving this reoccurring issue, the trouble shooting steps I've already
taken and the results of several diagnostic tools and logs.
I have a Sony VAIOS VPCEBB33FM lap top since 2011. I have had this issue on an off for a long time. I'm at my wit's end. Any new insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Scenario Details
1) Some times it's on and off through out the day, sometimes it won't work all day, and once in a while it will work fine for the entire day.
2) I've had this issue across several wireless services, Clear Network accessed with WiMax, Library Wi-fi, Comcast cable internet using wireless router and Wi-fi, and Comcast Xfinity Wi-Fi, to name a few examples.
3) Other devices in the household or library will work with no problems such as my smart phone or my roommates' laptops or desktop computers.
4) Once in a while, the built-in wireless adapter is not found and I have to reinstall the driver. Also the diagnostic tool has had to reset my adapter on an increasing basis.
5) I had my hard drive replaced in December 2014 and my system restored from the System Restore disks that came with it when I bought the laptop. Even though I've been online on an infrequent basis it worked just fine for a while. Now that
I've been online a bit more I'm having the same issues again.
Below are my attempts at trouble shooting so far but I still have not been able to consistently resolve my DNS issues
1) Restarting my adapter
2) Turning off my laptop and removing the power supply for 5-10 minutes before turning it back on.
3) Using the IP Config in Command Prompt
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
4) Using the NetSh reset in Command Prompt and restarting my laptop
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
netsh winsock reset
ipconfig /flushdns
[restart laptop]
5) Configuring the TCP/IP in several settings
Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click Properties.
I have used the following settings:
a) Obtain an DNS server address automatically
b) OpenDNS
208 67 222 222
208 67 220 220
c) Google DNS
8 8 8 8
8 8 4 4
6) Updating the driver for my Intel Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6250 AGN and Intel Centrino(R) WIMAX 6250 from the Intel website previous having my laptop wiped clean in 2014. It still did not resolve the issue. My laptop
manufacturer as not come up with an driver update for my adapter since 2010. I haven't tried to update the adapter driver from Intel's website since having my laptop repaired due to the fact that Intel strongly recommending using the manufacturer's updates
instead and frankly it didn't make much of a difference when I did it the first time.
7) The last one I've tried as of today is going into Services and changing the start up type to automatic for the following:
Computer Browser [changed from manual to automatic]
DHCP Client [already set to automatic]
DNS Client [already set to automatic]
Network Connections [already set to automatic]
Network Location Awareness [changed from manual to automatic]
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) [already set to automatic]
Server [already set to automatic]
TCP/IP Netbios helper [already set to automatic]
Workstation [already set to automatic]
...and I'm still having DNS issues.
My only guessing are that my laptop came with a lemon adapter that needs to be replaced, some advanced setting(s) that I'm not aware off, or my firewall/anti-virus is interfering. I've used Symmantic Anti-virus and Firewall in the past and currently
Avast Anti-Virus with Microsoft Network Firewall. I've had DNS issues with both anti-virus/firewall set ups.
Below are the results from the diagnostics and tests that I've ran.

EAP-FAST on Local Radius Server : Can't Get It Working
Hi all
I'm using an 877w router (flash:c870-advsecurityk9-mz.124-24.T4.bin) as local radius server and have followed various config guides on CCO. LEAP works fine but I just can't get EAP-FAST to work.
I'm testing with win7 client using anyconnect secure mobility client, and also a mac book pro but without luck.
the router sees unknown auth type, and when I run some debugs it talks of unknown eap type 3

External DNS server not replicating records to secondary after migration from 2003 to 2012
Hi
I have a query relating to 2012 Server and DNS.
Last week we de-commissioned our primary external DNS server (Windows 2003 Server) and moved the role over to a new Windows 2012 server.
Since this point replication to our secondary server (3rd party hosted) does not seem to occur and our DNS records seem to have expired on the secondary server as we cannot look these up via nslookup.
I cannot see any failures in the event log of the server; I have checked our external firewall logs and nothing is being blocked inbound/ outbound as far as I can see. And the server’s local firewall has been disabled.
The server is a standalone server in a workgroup with a standard filebased primary zone, with no AD integration and recursion disabled.
When I created the zone I copied the .dns file from the old server and selected this in the interface during the creation of the zone on the new server. The new server has the same internal and external IP as the old server and the old server is off-line.
I have also manually increased the serial number of the zone and still no joy.
One thing that I have noticed is when I open the zones properties/Name Servers and click edit on the external nameserver I get the infamous "The server with this IP address is not authoritative for the required zone" error.
Any help Would be appreciated, thanks in advanceNice to hear that you are close in finding the problem. So in short:
You have enabled Zone transfers in DNS management console for the applicable zone
You have verified that your DNS is listening to the correct interfaces
You have enabled firewall rules to accept TCP and UDP traffic to port 53
You have checked if "BIND secondaries" option is applicable to your case
You have initiated a zone transfer from the secondary server

Making use of local DNS for home network
I have an Apple Base Station and I wish to set up better local services on my home network, starting with local DNS. I see that the ABS will attempt to apply the <name>.local handle for devices but this seems inconsistent. What defines whether a host/file-server/printer/etc... will get a name and how is is defined? For windows machines, do I need Bonjour installed for this to work or will it take info from WINS or NETBIOS? For machines with DHCP addresses is there a way to set up some sort of dynamic DNS or bind a name to the devices MAC address?
Hi and welcome to the forum.
The actual Home highway box (with the telephone sockets and blue cat 5 sockets on the front) I would suggest you just throw in the bin.
You would also have had a special front plate installed that plugs into the BT owned NTE5.
Not sure what you had in mind, do you want to have a new line provided or shift your existing line over to the old socket?

I have a domain name(domain.com) DNS hosted at my ISP. I also have 3 sub domains DNS hosted at the same ISP pointing to various external ip addresses (mail.domain.com, vpn.domain.com and ts.domain.com). We want to set up sales.domain.com to point to an
internal 10. IP address. We have AD integrated DNS servers for our 2003 AD domain. The AD domain name is totally different than the hosted domain name in question. I currently edit the host file for a couple of PC's but this isnt practical company wide so
I want to add entries on our internal AD DNS servers to resolve the locally hosted site. If i recall, someone once told me that you cannot just put an A record for one sub domain, I would have to have entries on my 2003 DNS server to resolve anything related
to the domain.com name. Is this accurate? If so, what is the proper way to configure my 2003 AD DNS server to resolve anything domain.com related for my internal users while still allowing my ISP to do the DNS lookup for the internet. On my 2003 AD integrated DNS server...i rightclick forward lookup zone and choose...new zone..primary zone (store zone in AD checkbox checked)..i chose to all DNS servers in the AD domain for replication...zone name sales.domain.com....allow secure updates
option....then i added an A record in that zone...sales.domain.com..pointed that towards my internal 10. IP address...is this correct? It seems to be working correctly for the sales.domain.com DNS record...and i tested the other sub domains...and those look
like they are going to my ISP for DNS resolution...
Is this the correct procedure? I did this on a test AD domain and not my production...i want to make sure i dont break everything under the domain.com by incorrectly adding 1 sub domain..
