My early 2010 mac mini is running super slow on the internet compared to my late 2008 macbook pro on the same internet

My early 2010 mac mini has been running really slowly on my network.  My late 2008 Macbook Pro runs much faster despite being an older computer.  The Mac Mini really doesn't have much  on it and almost all of its storage space is there.  It downloads at about one third of the speed as my Macbook Pro.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks.

When did this difference begin?  Did you make any recent changes?

  • Can I take the hard drive from a late 2008 MacBook Pro and put it in an Early 2011 MacBook Pro?

I just got a new 15" MBP and I want to give my older one to my son. The "older" one is an Early 2011.  My son has the Late 2008 model. My brother will take the 2008 MBP once I've moved all my son's stuff to the 2011.  Here's the question. My son has a 750GB hard drive on the 2008. He has partitions on it for Boot Camp and for his games. The 2011 only has a 500GB hard drive. Rather than erasing the 2011, restoring it from Time Capsule, then setting up Boot Camp and the other partitions all over again, or even using Winclone or something like that, can I just swap the hard drives? It would certainly faster and easier. I just wonder if there is a technical reason why I shouldn't do that.

You could always give it a shot - the only problem that you might run into is that the the early 2011 might not boot when the hard drive is swapped from the 2008 hard drive. Some versions of OS X are simply not compatible between different models.
    But it's worth a try...

my mac mini is running very slow all of a sudden, how can i restore it's speed?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running a program at the instance of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for your password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator rights.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. There is no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear in the Terminal window. If you don't see that line within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." That's because the forum software falsely identifies something in the post as a violation of the terms of use. If that happens, please post the results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Looks like a problem with dynamic library initialization? Sqlplus works with desktop (intel). Running 10.5.5 on both machines.
    Culprit machine specs:
2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
One difference between desktop machine that works is that it only has 2 Gigs of mem..
My oci app gives the same error when using oracle client apis (running on culprit laptop).

    Things to note:
I have been unable to update firmware on this computer for about a year now. Im not sure why.
I am running a bootleg copy of Windows XP on this computer, I would not like to spend $149 to get Windows 7 if possible.
any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Why don't you take your 'old' MBP into your local Apple Store and have them check out everything that's wrong with it - and I mean everything? Then, when you get an estimate about how much it would cost to get the machine completely repaired, ask about the Apple flat-rate repair pricing?
It's worth a shot - and with what you may save, you can put in the bank for a new MBP.

  • Can i connect thunderbolt duo hard drive to the mini display port of a late 2008 macbook pro which do not have thunderbolt port, but have mini display port.

hi, i have a late 2008 15 inch macbook pro, which have a mini display port.
I noticed that thunderbolt and mini display port looks a like. So, my question is :
can i connect thunderbolt duo hard drive to the mini display port of a late 2008 macbook pro which do not have thunderbolt port, but have mini display port.
    thank you

    ken94538,
no, you’d need a Thunderbolt-to-FireWire adapter or Thunderbolt-to-USB adapter to be able to access your Thunderbolt hard drive from your 2008 MacBook Pro.

  • Reinstal Mac OS X, iWork09, iLife09 on Late 2008 Macbook Pro unibody ques?!

Alright so I've got a quick question for you knowledgeable people, I've got a late 2008 macbook pro unibody and has unfortunately installed some crap on my hard drive since i got it, and i want to be just like i got it out of the box. I want to delete everything off my hard drive, like completely erase, do I do that using the disk utility application or could i erase it completely with the mac OS X install disk that came with my mac? That's the specs of my harddrive(Hitachi Media Total Capacity : 232.9 GB (250,059,350,016 Bytes). When I reinstall my mac OS X, I will be waiting for Snow leopard (because its only $30 bucks if an upgrade), since they say the footprint of that O.S. will be considerably smaller that os x. but before i install snow leopard i want to reinstall my iwork and iLife programs, which are both 09. This leads to the next question that i have, my mac shipped with iLife and iWork 08 and I bought versions 09 after. They are single licenses and I want to know if I will be able to reinstall iWork09 and iLife09 after my reinstall of OS X without buying them again.
Thanks for any help in advance.;)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Here's an article on Installation options:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545?viewlocale=en_US
It should give you clear instructions on how to proceed. You will boot from your install disc to do the Erase and Install. To erase the boot drive, you will use the Disk Utility that is on your install disc.
You have the iLife 09 and the iWork 09 discs? Then you should be able to reinstall them from the discs after installing the OS. The single license means that you are licensed to use them on only one computer at a time.
Be sure to make a good backup of anything you want to keep before erasing your drive and reinstalling the OS.
Incidentally, you can save a few GB's of space if you do a custom installation and eliminate any languages and printer drivers you won't ever use.
    Good luck!

  • Upgrading my Late 2008 MacBook Pro running 10.5.8 to Yosemite

I just received a Late 2008 Macbook from a friend that he factory reset. I'm currently running 10.5.8 (very sluggishly) and would like to upgrade to Yosemite. I know I need to buy 10.6.8 before I can make the upgrade, but will my current hardware even be able to support the new software? I don't want to buy anything if I'm going to be running software too powerful for my mac.
    Product name: Late 2008 Macbook
Processor Speed: 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

    It should.
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
    Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.
    Application Compatibility
    Applications Compatibility (2)
    Do a backup before installing.
The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB and noticed an improvement (2008 iMac).
    Crucial
    Other World Computing
One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won’t have to go though the revert process.

  • I have a late 2008 macbook pro with a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memmory. Its starting to lag and is generally getting a little slow. It's running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5. How can i "update" it or just improve it's efficiency?

    help

    zibiva,
depending upon what you use your Late 2008 Aluminum MacBook for, you could increase your RAM from 2 GB to 4 GB or 8 GB; you could replace its hard disk drive with a SSD; and/or you could examine what software is currently in regular use, to see if any of those apps is contributing to the slowdown. If you haven’t done so already, you could download and install EtreCheck, and include the output from running EtreCheck in your reply, to see if anything there stands out as being particularly CPU- or RAM-intensive.

  • My late 2008 MacBook Pro (2.53/4GB Ram) running Lion 10.7.3 seems to be running slower.  What should I do to improve performance?

My Mac feels as if it is running slower these last couple of months.  I have thought of pursuing a commercially available "clean up" product, but thought I would try the community first and also for pointers using the Mac's own internal diagnostics or system improvement capabilities.  Any and all advice is most welcome.  I have a 250GB hard drive that is half full, I always update to latest revisions and have an extra high-speed internet connection.  Computer is not heavily loaded with apps and typically using Firefox for browsing.  (MS Office for Mac as well, but usually limited to one program such as MS Word or Excel at a time.)  No heavy graphics utilization.  Videos from the internet load slowly and some are choppy.  Even scrolling just doesn't seem "brisk".
    Thank you,
    Tom

Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the slowdown.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab. Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Now select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
    Step 2
Launch the Console application in the same way as above, and select “kernel.log” from the file list. Post the dozen or so most recent messages in the log – the text, please, not a screenshot. If there are repeats, please post only one example of each repeated message.

  • Late 2008 Macbook Pro shutting down at 94% while running on the battery

So I called Apple about this issue last week, since I tried calibrating my battery to improve it's health. And when my battery life got down to 94% or lower... my laptop just shut down. For no reason. When I called Apple, the guy I talked to before said it sounded like my battery was defective. He hooked me up to a tech guy, and when I told him what was up, he said that all the numbers on my battery sounded normal, and that he thinks that my logic board is failing. I'm not entirely sure what is up. These are the numbers I am getting now, one from iStat Pro, and the other from System Profiler:
    http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb376/setsuna108/Real%20Me/Screenshot2012-03 -05at95132PM.png
    http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb376/setsuna108/Real%20Me/Screenshot2012-03 -05at100154PM.png
I had my laptop plugged in all day, but I unplugged it for like, 2 seconds because the LED light on my 85w Magsafe Adaptor was out again... just from bumping it. It was at 82% battery health yesterday, and was fully charged. The battery, as well as the adaptor and laptop are a little over 2 years old. My battery health has been declining since January... it was at 86% health at the end of January, near the beginning of February... then a few weeks into February, it went down to 84%, then 81%... up to 82%, and now down to 79% health. What on earth is going on? Do I need to get a new battery along with a logic board replacement?

    Software update to 10.6.8 fully?
Reinstall 10.6 only then Software update fully?
You can do that by backing up data off the machine and disconnecting, then c boot off the 10.6 disk, just reinstall OS X over the more recent copy, then reboot holding shift key down (precaution) then Software update fully to 10.6.8.
then you'll have to check all third party software to make sure it's running, some install kext (kernel extension) files into OS X which get booted out by the overwrite install method, so install those again from fresh sources.
If that doesnt' fix your issue then it's a firmware or hardware issue..
    run a  hardware test

For the "D" you need a internet connection previously (don't move if on wifi) and hold that D down for quite some time.
